Title: finite-time processes in quantum thermodynamics: the limits of irreversibility.
Abstract: The emergence of irreversibility in physical processes, despite the fundamentally reversible nature of quantum mechanics, remains an open question in physics. This thesis explores the intricate relationship between quantum mechanics and thermodynamics, with a particular focus on minimizing entropy production in finite-time processes. By employing tools from quantum information theory and geometric thermodynamics, we tackle the challenge of deriving irreversible thermodynamic behavior from the reversible microscopic framework of quantum mechanics. We begin with a comprehensive review of the laws of thermodynamics, setting the stage for the subsequent analyses. We introduce novel developments in quantum thermodynamics through a generalized framework for geometric thermodynamics, which enables the derivation of finite-time corrections beyond the Markovian regime. Building on this foundation, we extend Landauer's principle by incorporating a finite-time correction that highlights the necessity of strong coupling for optimal information erasure processes. This result underscores the emergence of Planckian time as a fundamental speed limit to thermalization. Additionally, we explore how collective effects can be harnessed to reduce energy dissipation in thermodynamic operations, revealing that classical correlations between systems can significantly mitigate dissipation, though this may pose new questions regarding the third law of thermodynamics. Finally, we optimize thermodynamic processes in mesoscopic systems, including quantum dot engines and information engines. These findings not only enhance our understanding of the fundamental limits of irreversibility but also open new avenues for research. Future works will focus on fully exploiting collective effects, aligning these with the third law of thermodynamics, and understanding the thermodynamic consistency of master equations.

Many-body dynamics and quantum metrology in long-range interacting arrays public deposited, downloadable content.
The field of quantum technologies presents us with highly controllable experimental platforms in which to explore quantum many-body physics. In particular, systems exhibiting long-range (or even infinite-range) interactions have, in the past, shown a great potential for quantum-enhanced metrology, and provide some of the simplest circumstances in which to study interacting quantum dynamics. In this thesis we present theoretical work precisely on the subjects of quantum dynamics and metrology, in two iconic long-range interacting systems: neutral atoms inside an optical cavity and two dimensional trapped ion arrays.
We first focus on the atom-cavity system, analyze its time development in the presence of an external driving laser, and encounter "dynamical phase transitions", which are sharp changes in long-time dynamical behaviour of easy-to-measure observables. We diagnose this using mean field theory methods and comparing them with exact numerics, when feasible. We then center our attention on the steady state behaviour of this same system and the driven-dissipative phase transition it displays. We use analytical techniques to assess accurately the metrological potential (in the form of spin squeezing) of these steady states near the phase transition point. We then pivot to quantum metrology and investigate the fundamental limits with which the driving light can be frequency locked to the transition frequency of the intracavity atoms.
We investigate a few more metrological protocols. First we focus on performing precise measurements of electric fields and spatial displacements. We present theory work indicating how to implement this protocol in the atom-cavity system, and then show its realization in the trapped ion setup. We also analyze protocols, designed to measure spin rotations, that rely on creating entanglement as fast as possible to mitigate the effects of unwanted decoherence. These protocols are applicable to both trapped ions and atoms in a cavity.

Entangled states are a key resource in fundamental quantum physics, quantum cryptography, and quantum computation. In this thesis, we focus on the demonstrations of two novel methods to generate entanglement. First, we implement dissipative production of a maximally entangled steady state on two trapped ions.

This thesis is an attempt to reconstruct the conceptual foundations of quantum mechanics. First, we argue that the wave function in quantum mechanics is a description of random discontinuous motion of particles, and the modulus square of the wave function gives the probability density of the particles being in certain locations in space.

In this work I focus on a subset of many-body models, called quantum doubles, which, in addition to storing the information, could be used to perform the steps of the quantum computation, i.e., work as a "quantum processor".
