‘Rudhran’ movie review: This Raghava Lawrence, Sarathkumar reunion is an assault on our senses

‘rudhran’ is just another ‘kanchana’ film barring the ghosts — there’s the bubbly hero, a happy family, a greedy villain, a final showdown at a temple, and a message about those exploited by society.

Rudhran is a solid revenge actioner with some nice stunt sequences and heart-touching hardcore sentiments... which would’ve worked had it come a couple of decades ago. In today’s Tamil cinema, where taking revenge for the death of every possible relative out there has been done and dusted, and at a time when John Wick is slaying down a town’s worth of people avenging the murder of his dog, it’s actually unbelievable that we have a film that does exactly what hundreds of films have done for aeons now. Of course, the reason for the deaths that our hero has to avenge is new, but whether that paltry novelty is worth a film is a different question that the film fights to answer affirmatively and fails.

The number of films Rudhran will remind you of is countless. Taking a page out of Rajinikanth’s two recent duds, Darbar and Annaatthe , one of Rudhran’s first scenes is an action sequence in which our titular hero, played by Raghava Lawrence, decimates a gang of goons who, keeping in tradition with what they’ve always done, are chasing after a woman. Within a microsecond, by the time the henchmen have batted their eyelids once, the main goon is sent flying, and a couple of hundred meters away, a figure appears out of the shadows. “Yaaru da avan?” screams a goon and before you can even imagine the sort of punchline that is going to be the answer, another guy goes “Rudhran da” . This flatness is probably the only consistent part of the film and you know a movie is bad when you start caring about the representation of a bunch of bad guys.

But who is Rudhran? Why is he targeting the men of Bhoomi (Sarathkumar)? Why is he on the run? Why does he almost kill a guy who comes home to just deliver water cans? When we desperately await the answers, the film gives us the ‘Jorthaale’ dance number. The answers do come, well into the second half of the film, by when the film tires you as if you had a duel with Rudhran. Travelling in a non-linear fashion, the first half hits us with equal doses of unnecessary sentiment in the form of flashes of flashback sequences and physics-defying action from the present timeline. We learn that Rudhran is the dotting child of a happy couple (played by Poornima Bhagyaraj and Nassar), and together, they’re the living embodiment of a family straight out of a Vikraman film. Fate and a conveniently written screenplay make Rudhran fall in love with Ananya (Priya Bhavani Shankar) and they eventually get married. Of course, it’s too good to be true and how can a family be happy when it’s not the last shot of a film? A small conflict starts a series of unfortunate events for Rudhran who, and I’m not exaggerating when I say this, loses everything.

My biggest grouse with Rudhran is how underwhelmingly the antagonist character is written despite it being played by a seasoned actor like Sarathkumar. The last time he teamed up with Lawrence, we got Muni 2: Kanchana and though it wasn’t critically a revelation of any sort, it was a huge success and respawned the Muni franchise as the Kanchana series. Here though, Sarath is restricted to a one-dimensional character who seems to have walked in directly from the sets from Varisu with his dapper suits and Rolls-Royce car. Throughout the first half, all he does is visit the places turned into crime scenes by Rudhran to react to the carnage our hero has created. In fact, Rudhran is just another Kanchana film barring the ghosts — there’s the bubbly hero, a happy family, a greedy villain, a final showdown at a temple, and a message about those exploited by society.

The silver lining in Rudran has to be Raghava Lawrence; even while the family scenes are a cringefest, he aces it during the emotional sequences. The man, since the days of Parthale Paravasam , has been proving that he can do a phenomenal job with serious scenes and we’ve rarely seen films tapping into that side of him. It’s also a given that his dance moves are impressive as always and the film’s romance portions, though anything but unique, feel better than the rest of the film. But Rudhran bites more than it can chew as it tries to explore a lot of subplots in the very last few minutes of the film.

For some reason, the film relies a lot on CGI, and not only does it show but also distracts the visual experience. The dialogues too are, for the lack of a better word, antique in nature. Further , the action sequences are unintentionally hilarious; at one juncture, Bhoomi stabs Rudhran with a long digging bar... and our hero survives it as if he’s the T-800 from Terminator 2: Judgement Day . The final face-off between Rudhran and Bhoomi is a not-so-bad sequence featuring the animating ‘Pagai Mudi’ track, but by then, the erratic and loud score would have drained you off any energy to enjoy that or be ecstatic about the lead they give us for a sequel.

To sum it up, Rudhran is an excruciating watch that brings nothing new to the table and tries to capitalise on the tropes that had worked for ages, only to fail because of the same reason. How hard could it be to give the audience an enjoyable commercial entertainer? From the looks of it, it’s very difficult.

ஒரு கமர்ஷியல் படத்திற்கான அனைத்து அம்சங்களும் படத்தில் இருக்கின்றன. ஆக்ஷனை தவிர அனைத்தும் நன்றாகவே ஒர்க் அவுட் ஆகியிருக்கிறது. தயாரிப்பாளராக பல படங்களை தயாரித்த கதிரேசன் படத்தின் காட்சிகளை நன்றாகவே எதிர்கொண்டு இருக்கிறார். ஜிவி இசை ஓகே ரகம். ஆனால் படத்தில் வேறு எந்த புதுமையும் இல்லை. ஆக்ஷன் என்ற பெயரிலும், மாஸ் வசனம் என்ற பெயரிலும் அமைந்திருக்கும் காட்சிகள் கிரிஞ்ச் வகையறாவை சேர்ந்தவை.எதையும் எதிர்பார்க்காமல் வந்தால், ஒரு ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை ஃபேமிலியோடு பார்க்கலாம்.

பொல்லாதவன், ஆடுகளம், நய்யாண்டி, ஜிகர்தண்டா, டைரி உள்ளிட்ட சூப்பர் ஹிட் படங்களை தயாரித்த தயாரிப்பாளர் பைவ் ஸ்டார் கதிரேசன் இயக்குநராக அறிமுகமாகியுள்ள படம் “ருத்ரன்”. இந்த படத்தில் ஹீரோவாக ராகவா லாரன்ஸூம், ஹீரோயினாக பிரியா பவானி ஷங்கரும் நடித்துள்ளனர். மேலும் சரத்குமார், பூர்ணிமா ஆகியோர் முக்கிய கேரக்டரில் நடித்துள்ளனர். ஜி.வி.பிரகாஷ் இசை அமைத்துள்ள ருத்ரன் படம் தமிழ் புத்தாண்டு வெளியீடாக இன்று தியேட்டரில் வெளியாகியுள்ளது. இப்படம் ராகவா லாரன்ஸூக்கு கைக்கொடுத்ததா? இல்லையா? என்பது பற்றி காணலாம். 

கதையின் கரு

நாசர் - பூர்ணிமா பாக்யராஜ் தம்பதியினரின் ஒரே மகனான ராகவா லாரன்ஸ். அவர் வேலை தேடி சென்ற இடத்தில் பார்த்தவுடன் பிரியா பவானி ஷங்கர் மீது காதல் ஏற்படுகிறது. இதற்கிடையில் உடன் இருப்பவர் கடனாக வாங்கிய பணத்தை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு தலைமறைவாக சோகத்தில் நாசர் இறக்கிறார். இதனால் வாங்கிய கடனைக் கட்ட பிரியா பவானி சங்கர் திருமணம் செய்த கையோடு லாரன்ஸ் அமெரிக்கா செல்கிறார். பின் சில ஆண்டுகளில் மகளுடன் பிரியாவும் அங்கு செல்கிறார். பின்னர் வெளிநாட்டில் இருந்து முதலில் தனியாக சென்னை திரும்பும் பிரியா காணாமல் போகிறார். தொடர்ந்து பூர்ணிமா மறைவுக்கு ஊர் திரும்பும் லாரன்ஸ் பிரியாவை காணாமல் தேடுகிறார். இதற்கு பின்னால் சரத்குமார் இருப்பது தெரிய வருகிறது.  துறைமுகத்தை தன் கட்டுப்பாட்டின் கீழ் வைத்திருக்கும் டான் சரத்குமாரின் தம்பிகள் ராகவா லாரன்ஸால் அடுத்தடுத்து கொலை செய்கிறார். இதற்கு சரத்குமார் பழி வாங்க நினைக்க.. இருவருக்குமிடையே என்ன பிரச்சினை, காணாமல் போன பிரியா பவானி ஷங்கர் கிடைத்தாரா என்பதை சென்டிமென்ட், காதல், காமெடி கலந்து பிளாஷ்பேக் காட்சிகளுடன் சொல்ல முயற்சி செய்து இருக்கிறார்கள். 

நடிப்பு எப்படி?

காஞ்சனா 3 படத்திற்கு பிறகு கிட்டத்தட்ட 4 ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பின்  ராகவா லாரன்ஸ் படம் வெளியாகியுள்ளது.  ஸ்க்ரீனில் பார்ப்பதற்கு அவ்வளவு அழகாக தெரிகிறார்.   ஆனால் அவரின் வசன உச்சரிப்பு காஞ்சனா படத்தை நியாபகப் படுத்துகிறது. நடனத்தில் அவரை மிஞ்ச முடியாது என்பதை மீண்டும் ஒருமுறை நிரூபித்திருக்கிறார். இயல்பாகவே லாரன்ஸ் காமெடி சென்டிமென்ட் ஆப்ஷன் ஆகிய களத்தில் புகுந்து விளையாடுவார் என்பதால் ஏற்படும் அவருக்கு எளிதாக கை கொடுக்கிறது. 

ஹீரோயின் ஆக வரும் பிரியா பவானி சங்கருக்கு பெரிய அளவில் வேலை இல்லை என்றாலும், இரண்டாம் பாதியில் கதை நகர்வதற்கு முக்கியமாக காரணமாக  இருக்கிறார்.  ராகவா லாரன்ஸுக்கு பொருத்தமான ஜோடியாகவும் திகழ்கிறார்.  

மேலும் டானாக வரும் சரத்குமாருக்கு முதல் பாதியில் அவ்வளவு தான் காட்சிகள் இல்லை என்றாலும் இரண்டாம் பாதியில் தனக்கு கொடுக்கப்பட்ட வெளிநாட்டில் வேலைக்கு செல்பவர்களின் குடும்பத்தினரை கொன்று அவர்களின் சொத்துக்களை அபகரிக்கும் கொடூர எண்ணம் கொண்ட வில்லன் கதாபாத்திரத்தை கச்சிதமாக செய்திருக்கிறார். 

தியேட்டரில் படம் பார்க்கலாமா?

 புதுமையான களம், இரண்டாம் பாதி விறுவிறு திரைக்கதையால் ரசிகர்களை கவர முயற்சித்து இருக்கிறார் அறிமுக இயக்குனர் கதிரேசன். ஆனால் அடுத்து நடக்கக்கூடிய காட்சி இதுதான் என எளிதாக யோசிக்கும் அளவுக்கு   பலவீனமான காட்சி அமைப்புகள்  இருந்தாலும் அதனை ஆக்ஷ்ன் காட்சிகள் மூலமாகவும், எடிட்டிங் மூலமாகவும் சரி செய்துள்ளார்கள்.

வில்லன்கள் கொடூரமாக கொல்லப்படுவது கதைப்படி நியாயப்படுத்தப்பட்டிருந்தாலும் அதன் வீரியத்தை சற்று குறைத்து இருந்தால் நன்றாக இருந்திருக்கும். மொத்தத்தில் ராகவா லாரன்ஸ் படம் என்றாலே 100% என்டெர்டைன்மென்ட் கேரண்டி என்பதால் இப்படத்தை குடும்பத்துடன் தியேட்டருக்கு சென்று ஒரு முறை பார்க்கலாம்.

Rudhran review: A tried-and-tested formulaic film from Kathiresan

Priya Bhavani Shankar shines in her role, while Lawrence and Sarathkumar deliver what they are expected of.

Kathiresan, who is known more as a producer than as a director, has directed the commercial mass entertainer Rudhran featuring Raghava Lawrence and Priya Bhavani Shankar in the lead.

The film, like most other commercial entertainers that worked a couple of decades ago, has all the elements that the makers of those times considered essential for a movie to appeal to the masses.

It has comedy, mother sentiment, punchlines by the hero, extremely violent blood-curdling action sequences, and fast-paced songs that are aimed at pleasing the fans of the actor and a loud message that cannot be disputed.

Despite all this, Rudhran fails to impress and only works in parts. Here’s why:

Rudhran (Raghava Lawrence) is on a killing spree, brutally butchering the members of the gang of well-known real estate tycoon-cum-don Bhoomi (Sarathkumar).

Bhoomi himself is unsure as to who is targeting his men for he has incurred the wrath of several people over the years.

So, while Rudhran continues to kill Bhoomi’s men one by one, the latter tries to find out who is terrorising his men to take him out.

Why is Rudhran after Bhoomi? Does Bhoomi find out that it is Rudhran who is after him? What happens when the two take on each other? Rudhran offers answers to all these questions and more.

Predictable and exaggerated

The film has a decent story as its plot. It also has a significant and valid message to convey. However, the problem lies in the manner in which it is narrated.

Granted, we all know that the climax of a commercial entertainer will feature a fight between the hero and the villain and that the hero will invariably win it. However, there is something called suspense that makes a revenge thriller work.

Sadly, in Rudhran , that element takes a backseat as preceding scenes drop adequate hints as to what is to happen next. You can predict proceedings so much so that you know who is going to get killed next.

The movie also has Raghava Lawrence up to his usual tricks, portraying himself as someone with a soul that is as innocent as a child. This might appeal to his fans. But, for others, this might come across as annoying.

Rudhran has the hero delivering too many punchlines which makes you sigh. Then, there are highly exaggerated action sequences that show a lot of bloodshed.

As if the gory visuals weren’t enough, it has a loud background score which turns even louder during fight sequences.

The aim is to intensify the mood of the action sequences. However, all that the background music — which appears for painfully long periods — does is give you a headache.

Performances

In terms of performances, Priya Bhavani Shankar takes the spotlight. As the calm, composed, self-assured life partner of Rudhran, she delivers an impressive performance.

Other than the sequences where he behaves like a mischievous child, Raghava Lawrence does a neat job. His dancing, in particular, is extraordinary.

Thanks to his exceptional dancing skills, even songs that are out of tune appear enjoyable.

Sarathkumar as villain Bhoomi delivers what is expected of him.

Actors Redin Kingsley, Kaali and Poornima Baghyaraj come up with commendable performances that add value to the film.

In all, Rudhran is a commercial entertainer that works in parts.

‘பெற்றோரை பிள்ளைகள் கைவிடக் கூடாது’ என்ற மெசேஜை பழிதீர்க்கும் திரைக்கதையுடன் இணைத்து சொன்னால் அது ‘ருத்ரன்’. ஐடி கம்பெனியில் வேலை செய்பவர் ருத்ரன் (ராகவா லாரன்ஸ்). டிராவல்ஸ் நடத்தி வரும் அவரது அப்பா தேவராஜ் (நாசர்) தன் நெருங்கி நண்பருக்காக 6 கோடி ரூபாய் கடன் வாங்கித்தருகிறார். நண்பர் பணத்தை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு தலைமறைவாக, அந்தk கடன் தேவராஜ் குடும்பத்தின் மேல் விழுகிறது. கடனை அடைக்க வேறு வழியில்லாமல் லண்டன் சென்று வேலை பார்க்கும் ருத்ரன் திரும்பி வரும்போது அவரது குடும்பம் பூமி (சரத்குமார்) என்பவரால் அழிக்கப்படுகிறது. யார் இந்த பூமி? எதற்காக ருத்ரன் குடும்பத்தினரை அவர் கொன்றார்? அவரை ருத்ரன் எப்படி பழிவாங்கினார்? - இதுதான் திரைக்கதை.

90களின் இறுதியிலேயே இனி இது வேலைக்காகாது என நிராகரிக்கப்பட்ட திரைக்கதை ஃபார்மெட் எப்படியோ இயக்குநர் கதிரேசன் கையில் சிக்கியிருக்கிறது. கரோனாவுக்கு பிறகு ஓடிடியின் வளர்ச்சியால் பார்வையாளர்களின் ரசனையில் வியத்தகு மாற்றங்கள் நிகழ்த்திருக்கின்றன. இப்படியான 2023-ல் வில்லன் கொடூரன் என்பதைக் காட்ட ஒரு இன்ட்ரோ, பெண்ணை காப்பாற்றும் வகையில் நாயகனுக்கு ஒரு இன்ட்ரோ, அடுத்த சற்று நேரத்தில் நாயகிக்கு ஒரு இன்ட்ரோ. அடுத்து இன்ஸ்டன்ட் காதல், டூயட் பாடல், தேவையான அளவு காட்சிகளுக்கு இடையில் சிரிக்காமல் பார்த்துக்கொள்ளும் காமெடி!

‘எனக்கு அப்பா, அம்மா இல்ல. நான் ஹோம்ல தான் வளர்ந்தேன்’ என நாயகி சொல்லும்போதே தமிழ் சினிமாவின் பெரும்பாலான நாயகன், நாயகிகளும் அப்படித்தானே என தோன்றுகிறது. ‘நீ ஏன் என்னை லவ் பண்றே’ என நாயகி ப்ரியா பவானி சங்கர் கேட்கும்போது, ‘ஏன்னா நீ ஏழைக் குழந்தைகளுக்கு ஹெல்ப் பண்ணத நான் பாத்தேன்’ என்கிறார் லாரன்ஸ். இப்படியான வழக்கொழிந்த கதாபாத்திர வடிவமைப்பு பார்த்து பார்த்து சலித்தவை.

குறிப்பாக இரண்டு பேரை அடித்து ட்ராலி பேக் போல தள்ளிகொண்டு வருவது, சூலத்தில் மாட்டி எந்த சப்போர்டும் இல்லாமல் நிற்க வைப்பது, அடித்த வேகத்தில் பூமியில் விழுந்து பவுன்சாவது போன்ற சண்டைக்காட்சிகள் தெலுங்கில் பாலையாவுக்கு மட்டுமே சாத்தியப்பட்ட நிலையில், தற்போது அந்த வித்தையை லாரன்ஸ் எட்டிப்பிடித்திருக்கிறார். எல்லாவற்றையும் விட லாரன்ஸிடம் இருக்கும் கத்தி எதிரியின் தலைக்கு பின்புறமாக இடது டூ வலது பான் ஆவது கந்தர்வ கோட்டை சமஸ்தானத்தை அதிரவைத்த காட்சி! இப்படியான சண்டைக் காட்சிகளும், காதல், டூயட், காமெடி இன்ட்ரோகள் சுவாரயமற்று பழைய ஃபார்மெட்டில் இருப்பதை ரசிக்க முடியவில்லை.

படத்தின் இரண்டாம் பாதியின் தொடக்கம் ஆறுதலைத் தந்தது. ஆனால், அதிலும் ஃப்ளாஷ்பேக்குக்குள் வைக்கப்பட்ட ஃப்ளாஷ்பேக் காட்சிகள், திணிக்கப்பட்ட பாடல்கள், ‘முனி’ பட சீரிஸ்களில் இறுதியில் சாமி சிலை முன்பு பாடல் ஒலிக்க எதிரிகளை அடித்து துவம்சம் செய்யும் அதே காட்சியை அப்படியே ரீமேக் செய்திருப்பது அயற்சி. ‘அய்யனார நேர்ல பாத்துருக்கீயா.. அய்யா தான்டா அய்யனார்’, ‘நான் பூமிடா’ என சரத்குமார் சொல்லும்போது, ‘நான் அந்த பூமிய படச்ச சாமிடா’ என ராகவா லாரன்ஸ் சொல்வதும்.. வேற லெவல் வசனங்கள்!

முதல் பாதியில் வரும் காமெடி போர்வைக் காட்சியிலும், சண்டைக் காட்சியிலும், சில சென்டிமென்ட் சீனஸ்களிலும் ராகவா லாரன்ஸின் மிகை நடிப்பு எட்டிப்பார்க்காமலில்லை. தவிர, அவரின் ஆஸ்தான களமான நடனம் பாடல்களை ரசிக்க உதவுகிறது. காதல், காதல் பாடல், அம்மாவை பார்த்துகொள்வது, குழந்தையை பெற்றுத் தருவதைத் தவிர, ப்ரியா பவானி சங்கருக்கு படத்தில் பெரிய வேலையில்லை. இருந்தாலும் கொடுத்த வேலையை சரிவர செய்கிறார். நீண்ட நாட்களுக்குப் பிறகு சண்டைக்காட்சிகளில் சரத்குமார் கவனிக்க வைக்கிறார். க்ளைமாக்ஸில் அவரின் சின்ன குத்தாட்டம் ரசிக்கும்படியாக இருந்தது. ரெடின் கிங்ஸ்லீ தொடக்கத்தில் சிரிக்க வைத்ததோடு சரி .பூர்ணிமா பாக்யராஜ், நாசர், காளி வெங்கட் தங்களுக்கான பணியை செவ்வனே செய்துள்ளனர்.

ஜி.வி.பிரகாஷ்குமார் இசையில் ‘ஜோர்தாலே’, ‘பாடாத பாட்டெல்லாம்’ ரீமிக்ஸ் பாடல்கள் கேட்க வைக்கின்றன. சாம்.சி.எஸ்ஸின் பின்னணி இசை அவ்வளவாக ஈர்க்கவில்லை. ஆர்.டி.ராஜேசகர் ஒளிப்பதிவும், ஆண்டனி படத்தொகுப்பும் காட்சிகளுக்கு பலம்.

மொத்தத்தில் தாய். தந்தையை அனாதையாக்கவிடக் கூடாது என்ற மெசேஜை சொல்ல முனைந்திருக்கும் படத்தின் எமோஷனல் காட்சிகள் கூட ஒட்டாதததும், அப்பா - மகளுக்கான சென்டிமென்ட் காட்சிகளும் நிறைவின்றி கடப்பதும், வழக்கொழிந்த திரைக்கதை ஃபார்மெட்டாலும் ருத்ரன் ஆடிய தாண்டவம் வில்லன் பூமியின் மீது மட்டுமல்ல... அத்துடன் படம் முடிந்த பின்பு ருத்ரன் பார்ட் 2-க்கான படத்திற்கு லீடும் கொடுக்கப்படுவதை கவனித்தில் எடுத்துக்கொள்வது சால்ச்சிறந்தது.

Rudhran Review - Routine yet Relatable!

Rudhran is an emotional actioner starring Raghava Lawrence, Sarathkumar and Priya Bhavani Shankar in the lead roles. It is directed and produced by Fivestar Kathiresan.

Premise : Raghava Lawrence loses his dear ones to the greediness of Sarathkumar. The innocent who was happily living with his family now seeks revenge for their deaths.

Writing/ Direction:

It is a commercial film of a particular tone and naturally comes by the rule of not to expect logic in it, but surprisingly the basic logic is maintained neatly. It is definitely not a lethargically made movie, despite the treatment and the narrative style being usual. The base story offers something appreciably new, the crime happening around it might not be common but it is presented believably by a newspaper cutting, and the sentiment behind it is heart-touching. There is a knack for these commercial movies, the trick for success is to catch hold of the emotions, in that way it is a winner. The flow is true to the subject, there is enough substance that sets up the story and establishes the characters, presented as multiple flashbacks. The present portions are thankfully minimal as they are mostly just boring and vengeful action stretches, but the climax is impressive as we are injected with the whole past life of the characters and with the ‘Rudhrathandavam’ factor adding value. Sarathkumar who seemed like a weak villain for a long time suddenly takes the limelight after his strong backstory is revealed, mainly because of the connection we get over the crime he is committing. While the first half is passable, the second half is very decent, the film basically gets better as it progresses. There was an integral subplot that was left out till the director’s card at the end, glad it got a closure after that, but the final frame being ‘Rudhran 2’ was quite a bit to digest. The punch dialogues are badly written and don't fit in for the order of the day. Also, there are some cringe moments and forceful melodramatic moments at times.

Performances :

Raghava Lawrence shines bright in the lighthearted scenes, dance moves and swag slow motion shots . But his hairstyle, makeup are issues and performance-wise he struggles when he has to shout out loud. Sarathkumar's present timeline look set is also badly done, but a cakewalk act from him, especially in the flashback. A better outing for Priya Bhavani Shankar, she does a decent job and importantly gets a character that has an involvement in the story. Kaali Venkat is impressive as always in the helpful human role. Nassar and mainly Poornima Bhagyaraj get very important roles to play as the hero’s parents, solid work by both.

Technicalities :

Such a feeble flick on the technical front. Poor production quality and cost cutting is evident. The only savior is the songs, two of them reprise/ remix, the other songs composed by GV Prakash are decent too. Background music by Sam.C.S is a big blunder, fails to boost the weightage in the situations. The efforts by cameraman R.D.Rajasekhar and team are pulled by other visual aspects like costumes, hairdo, makeup, etc. Mainly the VFX is poor, the green mat shots exist in almost every scene and it is never lively. Edit pattern is convincing for a revenge saga, but there are plenty of jump cuts to make it look racy which lack finesse. Stunt team has used the location props well for all the fights, but they are overly heroic and there are countless number of cinematic rope shots.

Verdict - Despite being a template commercial film that follows all the tried and tested formulas, it is definitely not a bad choice for a one time watch as the story idea is worthy and the emotions behind it work big time. The screenplay isn’t boring too.

Rudhran review: Raghava Lawrence-starrer is an agonising, formulaic bore

Close to three hours of every formulaic Kollywood trope later, Rudhran is an agonising watch. Raghava Lawrence as the hero Rudhran, has a tragic backstory that sets him on the path of vengeance. Bodies drop to a headache-inducing soundtrack. Villainous henchmen are constantly airborne in defiance of the laws of gravity and good cinema. There’s always an accommodating breeze to dramatically ruffle Rudhran’s hair each time he slaughters someone. There is a smattering of bad jokes that leave you feeling secondhand embarrassment for the actors. And if all this wasn’t enough, the hero comes up with punchlines entirely in alliteration. Here’s a sample: “Ayyanara paarthirkiya da? Ayyadhaanda ayyanaaru!”

Please imagine the above dialogue shrieked at you from a towering screen while the music works itself up into a delirious frenzy. Rudhran ultimately delivers his notion of justice as an incarnate of Siva, at a Bhairava temple, with devotees dancing in the throes of religious fervour. Also, Rudhran is high throughout this sequence, hallucinating his dead family egging him into battle. What people want to smoke should be up to them, but I’m confused about what the messaging here is. 

In this exceedingly convoluted, messy film, the message is either–since Tamil movies however bad will still give you a sermon from the hero–don’t go abroad for work without your family because tragedy will strike if you do. Or, it is that men must take on the avatharam of whatever god they’re named after to bring down criminal empires by solely violent means. It’s hard to tell which it is, the plot is quite muddled. 

Sarathkumar seems to be settling comfortably into playing the bad guy. After his toxic rich father character in Vijay’s Varisu, he’s the main antagonist in Rudhran. To be precise, he’s an antagonist whose crime network is explained away vaguely with even foggier reasons for how Rudhran and his family became entrapped in it. 

We’re introduced to Rudhran’s family only in flashbacks. The real tragedy in the backstory is the wasted talent of Nassar and Kaali Venkat. Nassar plays Rudhran’s two-dimensional father and Kaali is a friend and side-kick to a hero who is not even half as capable an actor as he is. Ragavan Lawrence glowers at villains, and murders without consequence, and offers poorly executed comic scenes when not delivering punch dialogues in alliteration. This might describe most Kollywood heroes, but the distinction is that he does none of it well. Raghavan Lawrence manages neither to amuse nor intimidate anyone as Rudhran. His scenes and line deliveries are so unremarkable that the film would have done better marketed as a parody. 

Even Sarath Kumar has only as much menace as an evil monster from a children’s fairytale, despite being one of the most seasoned actors in the cast. Priya Bhavani Shankar as Rudhran’s wife Ananya is present for as long as she can contribute to the tragedy in her husband’s past. Until then she’s the ideal wife, completely absorbed in the needs of her mother-in-law and spouse. 

What is it with Kollywood heroes, murdered wives, and righteous male rage? When will the industry let women characters be more than doting wives and daughters-in-law before being violently killed off all so that the hero can have a sad story to tell? 

We’ll probably never get an answer to that, but to the question of whether you should watch Rudhran over this long weekend, I would say absolutely not.

Raghava Lawrence is a genre by himself. By now, we know his films invariably carry references to his real-life philanthropy, his love for North Chennai, his dance moves, a 'cute' mother-son bond, and of course, a final hero-villain face-off amidst stoned aghoris. Rudhran has it all. If only they had added a dash of the supernatural and made the protagonist a phasmophobic, Rudhran would fit right into the Kanchana universe. However, even the semblance of investment and integrity present in the horror comedy franchise is nowhere to be found in Rudhran . Director: S Kathiresan Cast: Raghava Lawrence, Sarathkumar, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Kaali Venkat

While it isn't a surprise that this 'masala' entertainer has the same old ingredients, the unimaginative and repetitive packaging leaves us wanting for more. Nassar plays the generic hero appa, who forgets his anniversary and Poornima's hero amma is introduced with a pooja room shot. Priya Bhavanishankar's Ananya is the hero's love interest, who wins his heart by taking a selfie with homeless kids. In fact, these are the better-written characters in the film as they at least get a name. For instance, Redin Kingsley, who makes a brief appearance, is named Sketch. One might argue that it is a common name among gangsters. But wait till you meet Sketch's sidekick named after another stationary... Pencil! If you're someone who is intrigued by well-flavoured masala entertainers or revenge dramas, Rudhran has very less to offer. But what it offers the audience instead is the joy of predicting the upcoming scene, dialogue, and even the BGM right.

Whenever the film takes a break from being generic, it resorts to being confusingly regressive. During one scene, Rudhran's mother looks at Ananya and says, " Ne ivana love pandriyo illaiyo, epdiyavadhu enaku marumagala vandhudu. " In another exchange, Rudhran casually announces, " Nee enna kalyanam pannitta, ennaala mattum dhaan sirippa, ennala mattum dhaan aluva. " Though these convoluted ideas don't instantly come across as objectionable, we soon realise they are twisted on multiple levels.

Be it a Ghajini or a Naan Sigappu Manidhan , all the revenge sagas have had identical plot points when looked at macroscopically. The protagonist who is looking forward to the happiest phase of his life gets shattered into pieces by one night that changes his life forever and he goes after the man who caused it all. What makes these stories unique is the details that go into his pursuit of revenge. Here Rudhran is Kanchana on drugs from frame one, making human centipedes out of the baddies. The primary antagonist Sarathkumar tries his best to sell Bhoominathan as a dreaded gangster with his incredibly loud performance, but there is hardly any effect as Rudhran is hulk-smashing ferris wheels on the other end.

All the creative juices saved by the makers seem to have been channelised into the weirdly entertaining, gravity-defying, gory stunts. If you are someone who enjoys the guilty pleasures that comes with the Boyapati Srinu brand of fight scenes, you won't be disappointed on that front. The Pagai Mudi song, which has a major hangover of Kodiyavanin Kadhaya  from Kanchana , where Rudhran and Bhoominathan literally bounce off the ground, syncing with the beats, is such an escapists' delight! How I wish the rest of the film too didn't take itself so seriously.

எல்லா வகையிலும் பார்த்துப் பழகிய பழங்கால சினிமா என்ற வகையில் 'ருத்ரன்' டைம்பாஸ் படமாகக் கூட இல்லாமல் நம்மை டயர்டு மட்டுமே ஆக்குகிறது.

குடும்பம், காதல், வேலை என மகிழ்ச்சியாக வாழும் ருத்ரனின் குடும்பத்தின் மேல் ஒரு பெரிய கடன் வந்து விழ, அதிலிருந்து மீள வெளிநாட்டில் ஐடி வேலைக்குச் செல்கிறார் ருத்ரன். அதனாலேயே, ருத்ரனின் மொத்த குடும்பமும் வில்லன் 'பூமி'யால் கொல்லப்படுகிறது. வில்லன் பூமி யார், அவர் ஏன் ருத்ரனின் குடும்பத்தைக் கொன்றார், பூமியை ருத்ரன் பழிவாங்கினாரா என்பதை எளிதில் யூகிக்கும்படியான மசாலா சினிமா டெம்ப்ளேட் காட்சிகளை வரிசையாக அடுக்கி, திரைக்கதை அமைத்திருக்கிறார் கே.பி.திருமாறன், அதற்குத் திரையில் உயிர் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார் அறிமுக இயக்குநர் கதிரேசன்.

துள்ளலும் எள்ளலும் மிக்க ருத்ரனாகராகவா லாரன்ஸ், டான்ஸிலும் சென்டிமென்ட்டிலும் அடித்து ஆடினாலும், ரொமான்ஸிலும் சண்டைக்காட்சிகளிலும் ஓவர் டோஸாகவே பெர்ஃபாமென்ஸ் செய்திருக்கிறார். சண்டைக்காட்சிகளில் எல்லாம் பழங்கால தெலுங்கு சினிமாக்களுக்கே டஃப் கொடுக்கிறார். ரொமான்ஸ் காட்சிகளில் அவரின் மேனரிஸம் இதுவரையிலான ராகவா லாரன்ஸ் படங்களின் பார்த்துப் பழகிய ரியாக்‌ஷன்களையே நினைவுபடுத்துகிறது. கதாநாயகி பிரியா பவானிஷங்கருக்கு முதற்பாதியில் எந்த வேலையும் இல்லை என்றாலும், இரண்டாம் பாதியில் திரைக்கதை நகர்விற்குக் கைகொடுக்கும் கதாபாத்திரம். அதைச் சிறப்பாகவே செய்திருக்கிறார். ருத்ரனின் அம்மா, அப்பாவாக வரும் பூர்ணிமா பாக்யராஜ் - நாசர், நண்பராக வரும் காளி வெங்கட், கதாநாயகனுக்கு உதவும் காவலராக வரும் இளவரசு என அனைவருமே அவரவர்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட கதாபாத்திரத்தை நிறைவாய் செய்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

துறைமுக தாதாவாகவும், கொலைகார கும்பலின் தலைவனாகவும் வருகிறார் சரத்குமார். தோற்றம், உடல்மொழி போன்றவற்றில் மிரட்டினாலும், வழக்கமான வில்லன் கதாபாத்திரம் செய்யும் அதே பன்ச் டையலாக், அதே மிரட்டல், அதே கோபம் எனப் படம் முழுவதும் மாற்றங்களின்றி வருகிறார். ரெடின் கிங்ஸ்லி தன் அறிமுக காட்சியில் மட்டும் சிரிக்க வைக்கிறார்.

ஜி.வி.பிரகாஷ், தரண் குமார் கூட்டணியின் பாடல்களில் எந்தப் புதுமையும் இல்லை. காதல், அப்பா சென்டிமென்ட், அம்மா சென்டிமென்ட் என எந்தப் பாடலும் மனதில் நிற்கவில்லை. அஃப்ரோ இசையில் முதல் பாடலாக வரும் 'ஜொர்தாலயா' பாடல் மட்டும் ஆட்டம் போட வைக்கிறது. பின்னணி இசையில் சாம் சி.எஸ் இரண்டாம் பாதிக்கு வலுசேர்த்திருக்கிறார். கலர் ஃபுல்லான முதல் பாதிக்கும், விறுவிறுப்பான இரண்டாம் பாதிக்கும் தேவையான ஒளிப்பதிவை வழங்கியிருக்கிறார் ஆர்.டி.ராஜசேகர். ஆனால், அவரின் முத்திரைக் காட்சிகள் ஒன்றுகூட இல்லை. அப்பட்டமாகத் தெரியும் சி.ஜி. உருவாக்கத்திலான 'வெளிநாட்டு' காட்சிகளில் கொஞ்சம் கவனம் செலுத்தியிருக்கலாம். முதற்பாதியில் தவறவிட்ட பணியை இரண்டாம் பாதியில் ஓரளவிற்குச் செய்திருக்கிறார் படத்தொகுப்பாளர் ஆண்டனி. பலவீனமான திரைக்கதை கைவிட்ட இடங்களை தன் படத்தொகுப்பால் சரி செய்ய முயன்றிருக்கிறார்.

வீட்டிற்குச் செல்லப் பிள்ளையான துடிப்பான கதாநாயகன், கருணை வடிவான கதாநாயகி, கதாநாயகனின் கண்டதும் காதல், ஓப்பனிங் சாங், கதாநாயகியைப் பார்த்த மூன்றாவது காட்சியில் டூயட், அதிரடி ஆக்‌ஷன், வில்லனின் அடியாட்களை ஸ்கெட்ச் போட்டுக் கொல்லும் கதாநாயகனின் ஹீரோயிஸம், கதாநாயகனைத் தேடும் வில்லன் என எந்தப் புதுமையும் இல்லாமல், முழுக்க முழுக்க பழங்கால சினிமாவாகவே செல்கிறது முதற்பாதி. அயர்ச்சியான முதற்பாதியை முடிந்தளவிற்கு தன் வழக்கமான மேனரிசத்தால் காப்பாற்ற படாதப்பாடுபடுகிறார் ராகவா லாரன்ஸ். ஆனால், அந்த முயற்சி தோல்வியிலேயே முடிகிறது. கதாநாயகனின் குடும்பத்தைப் பற்றிய காட்சிகளும் பார்த்துப் பழகியதாகவே இருப்பதால், பார்வையாளர்கள் மனதில் பதியாமல், வெறும் காட்சிகளாகவே கடந்து செல்கிறது.

கதாநாயகனின் பின்கதை, வில்லனின் பின்கதை, இருவருக்கும் இடையிலான தொடர்பின் பின்கதை, கதாநாயகன் வில்லனை நெருங்கும் படலம் என இரண்டாம் பாதி சற்றே வேகமாகப் பயணிக்கிறது. ஆனால், எல்லாம் எளிதில் யூகிக்கும்படியான காட்சிகள்! வில்லன் பூமி எப்படி இவ்வளவு சொத்து சேர்த்தார் என்ற காரணத்தில் கொஞ்சம் புதுமை இருக்கிறதே தவிர, கிஞ்சித்தும் லாஜிக் இல்லை.

படத்தில் உள்ள மொத்த கதாபாத்திரங்களின் வடிவமைப்பு மட்டுமல்ல, அக்கதாபாத்திரங்களின் முடிவுகளுமே பார்த்துப் பழகிய திருப்பங்களாகவே உள்ளன. அப்பா - மகள் சென்டிமென்ட்டிற்கு நிதானமான, அழுத்தமான காட்சிகள் இல்லாததால், அதுவும் ஒர்க் அவுட் ஆகவில்லை.

எளிதில் யூகிக்கும்படியான திருப்பங்கள், லாஜிக் மீறல்கள் எனப் போய்க்கொண்டிருக்கும் திரைக்கதையில், ராகவா லாரன்ஸின் துக்கத்தையும், பதற்றத்தையும் கடத்தும் காட்சிகள் மட்டும் கொஞ்சம் ஆறுதல் தருகின்றன. அதிரடி சண்டைக்காட்சிகளுக்குப் பின் வலுக்கட்டாயமாக இறுதியில் சேர்க்கப்பட்ட உருக்கமான காட்சிகள், பலவீனமான திரைக்கதைக்கு கைகொடுக்கும் என இயக்குநர் நம்பியிருக்கிறார். ஆனால், அது மொத்த படத்திலிருந்தும் விலகி, துருத்தலாகவே நிற்கிறது. சண்டைக் காட்சிகளில் இயற்பியல் விதிகள் மட்டுமல்ல, பல விதிகள் மீறப்பட்டு ஃபேன்டஸி படங்களுக்கே டஃப் கொடுக்கிறது.

Rudhran Movie Review

Actor Raghava Lawrence has finally broken free from the overbeat horror genre to try his hand at another overworked genre. Rudhran is about an IT professional who embarks on a revenge mission to take down gangsters that are responsible for the death of his family. Actor Raghava Lawrence who was last seen in the action-comedy horror movie Muni 3: Kanchana 2 is back on screens with his action thriller film Rudhran. Actress Priya Bhavani Shankar has portrayed the female lead in the flick. Director S Kathiresan has directed the entertainer. Writer K P Thirumaaran has written the script. So, how has the action thriller flick Rudhran come out? Is it solid enough to put actor Raghava Lawrence back on the winning horse, and extend the winning streak of actress Priya Bhavani Shankar ? To know that let us get into the movie review.

The film follows the life of Rudhran (Raghava Lawrence), a corporate employee who leads a happy life with his father Devaraj (Nassar), and mother Indhrani (Poornima Bhagyaraj). When heroes who are loafers have a romantic track, how can an employed man not have one? Rudhran meets Ananya (Priya Bhavani Shankar), who works as a lab technician and gets smitten by her. After she accepts his proposal, they get married, give birth to a daughter, and name her Anya. Well, that escalated quickly! Isn’t it? This is not a hero singing duets and romancing the heroine while taking on evil corporate criminals, kind of plot. But sort of a lone wolf that goes on a hunt to hunt the hunters that hunted his family. Devaraj helps a person get a loan to run a business. But he elopes with the money which leads to Devaraj’s death. To sort out the financial issues Rudhran takes up a job abroad. Ananya and Anya visit him, and spend some time there. For predictable reasons Ananya leaves Anya with Rudhran, and returns to Chennai. 

One day out of the blue Rudhran is informed of his mother’s sudden demise, and the disappearance of his wife. He returns to Chennai to give a proper send off to his mother. After which he takes it upon himself to find out what transpired while he was gone. He does some digging on his own. Evidence points him to a biker gang leader Varadha (Sharath Lohithaswa). He beats the information out of him which takes him to Bhoominathan aka Bhoomi (R Sarathkumar). Bhoomi and Varadha run an organized network that targets the parents of those who work in foreign nations, and usurp their assets. Bhoomi learns about Rudhran, and ties him up in a factory and sets it ablaze. Will Rudhran survive it, and avenge the death of his family by killing Bhoomi, is what makes the rest of the movie. 

To start with, Rudhran has a hackneyed plot to lure the attention of the audience in the first place. On top of it, it has an even more cliched treatment to hold the attention of the audience if at all it manages to get it. Those who have followed actor Raghava Lawrence’s work, would be accustomed to the horror comedy, reference to orphan or physically challenged kids in some form, mother-son sentiment angle, and of course his dance moves. Pretty much this sums up the plot of his filmography. Rudhran is not any different from it. Only missing element is the horror factor. Unfortunately, unlike any of his masala films, Rudhran is a disaster on all fronts. From the manner in which the characters are introduced, to how the hero falls for the heroine, to its dialogues, to its use of BGM, to how it concludes, nothing has even an emblem of freshness to it. Guessing or rather confidently saying what is the next scene is a nice pass time while we wait for the film to reach the end. But even that gets banal after a point. 

Actor Raghava Lawrence is known for playing cocky swaggering characters. He seems to have had great fun playing his stereotypical part yet again. Despite being the female lead, actress Priya Bhavani Shankar’s character does not have much say in the proceedings. The actress, on her part does her role well. Actor R Sarathkumar demands our attention with his towering presence. Actor Sharath Lohithaswa lives up to the purpose for why he was brought on board. Veteran actor Nassar is effective as usual. Veteran actress Poornima Bhagyaraj does justice to her part. Actor Kaali Venkat offers us the occasional much necessary humor. Actor Ilavarasu makes an impact even in a limited screen time. Actor Redin Kingsley’s celebrated antics are getting tad dreary after their protracted run. Actress Thangadurai is operational. Actor Jayaprakash is functional. Actor Hareesh Peradi is adequate. Actors A Venkatesh, Thennal Abhilash, Sambhavi Gurumoorthy, Jayakumar, Rajesh, Stun Siva, Abhishek Vinod, Shivajith, Neelima Rani, George Maryan, Sai Dheena, and Deepa Shankar have all chipped in and have played their roles well. The rest of the cast has delivered what was asked of them. 

On the technical front, musicians G V Prakash Kumar, Dharan Kumar, and OfRo’s songs are uninspiring and do not last long in our memory. Even music director Sam C S’s background score is just jarring and deafening. Cinematographer R D Rajasekhar has covered the entertainer from all best angles. His work standout especially in capturing the action blocks. Editor Anthony has complimented the work of his colleague by having his scissor placed at right spots. 

On the whole, absence of novelty and generic writing makes actor Raghava Lawrence’s Rudhran not only a tedious affair but a horrific cinematic experience.

Rudhran Twitter Review: Raghava Lawrence's Re-Entry Film Attracts Family Audience

While the Madras High Court has banned the dubbing license of the film 'Rudhran', starring Raghava Lawrence in the lead role, the court has given a verdict on the appeal after the hearing.

Raghava Lawrence - Priya Bhavani Shankar starrer 'Rudhran' is releasing worldwide today (April 14, 2023) for Tamil New Year. This film is directed and produced by Kathiresan on behalf of Five Star Creations. Rudhran has great hype among fans as Raghava Lawrence is giving a re-entry in acting after four years of Kanchana 3 release.

The release date of this film has already been announced once and then it was postponed due to some reasons, and finally the film is releasing today.

It is said that Revanza Global Ventures has signed an agreement with Five Star Creations, the production company of Rudhran, to acquire the dubbing rights of the film in Hindi and other North Indian languages.

For this, Revanza Global Company, which had agreed to pay 12 crore 25 lakh rupees, had paid 10 crore rupees in the first phase. In this case, the production company has suddenly canceled this contract, saying that they have to pay an additional 4 crore 50 lakh rupees.

In this regard, the Revanza Global company filed a case in the Madras High Court stating that the film team has decided to release the film on April 14, and that they will incur a loss of 10 crore rupees. While this case came up for hearing yesterday, Judge Krishnan Ramasamy, who heard the case, imposed an interim ban on the release of the film till April 24 and ordered the production company to respond to this petition.

So when there was doubt about the release of Raghava Lawrence's movie Rudhran, the production company filed a petition to cancel the ban and it was reported that if the film is not released on time, it will face huge losses. And while the film crew has taken their side's argument about the dubbing license, the Madras High Court has announced that the ban has been lifted. So Rudhran movie is releasing today without any problem. This information has made the crew and fans of Raghava Lawrence extremely happy.

'Raayan' is a special milestone in Dhanush's career. It marks his 50th film as an actor and his second film as a director (after 'Pa Paandi'). For his 50th film, he donned the hat of a director, actor and writer. Has he exceeded the second time as a filmmaker with 'Raayan'? Let's find out!

Kathavarayan aka Raayan is forced to take care of his two brothers and toddler sister after their parents vanish for two days. This marks the beginning of Raayan’s struggle. His motto is to survive in this cruel world. He fears no one, not even death. Raayan, along with his siblings, escape grave danger from their village and land in North Madras, where they find a home.

Years later, Muthu (Sundeep Kishan) is an alcoholic, hot-headed wastrel in the locality, while Manickam (Kalidas Jayaram) is a college-going younger brother. Durga (a feisty Dushara Vijayan) is the darling of the house, with unconditional love for her elder brother, Raayan. He is a father figure and is wary of his limitations and the repercussions of his anger. He cautions Muthu not to fall into the suzhal (vortex in English). But, Muthu's alcoholic nature lands the Raayan family in trouble and claims life after life.

Dhanush is an above-par performer is a known fact to everyone. With his directorial debut, 'Pa Paandi', he proved himself with a family drama. In 'Raayan', this family drama turns into a gripping revenge thriller that exposes the gangster culture. Much like Vetri Maaran's 'Asuran', we know that Raayan is a menacing man, but he doesn't let his anger consume him or unleash the beast in him. For him, leading a peaceful life is paramount, and and he is willing to go to great lengths to achieve it.

'Raayan' is yet another case of two different halves. While the first half is all about establishing Raayan and his siblings, the second half is about revenge and only revenge. The first half also introduces gangsters Sethu (SJ Suryah), Durai (Saravanan) and a police officer (Prakash Raj) and how their interpersonal relationships influence the story.

Dhanush's 50th film is a simple revenge story. The interval block shows streaks of brilliance of his directorial skills. However, as a writer, 'Raayan' lacks emotional depth. For the revenge angle to work, emotions matter. Despite having multiple twists and turns, the pay-off moments do not affect them as were intended. The second half has many unsolved questions, which are dealt with on the surface. For example, you never get a convincing explanation of why Manickam takes the drastic decision in the second half. It is where the film falls short of being a perfect revenge thriller.

That said, Dhanush makes up for his acting. Similarly, Kalidas and Sundeep Kishan have meaty roles and have lived up to them. Dushara Vijayan gets an exciting role and she excels. Prakash Raj, Selvaraghavan and SJ Suryah's performances make things interesting.

'Raayan' is the latest addition to the list of movies that normalises police encounter killings and them taking illegal routes defying the system to end gangster culture.

Dhanush's 50th film is visually spectacular. The silhouette shots, interval block and the climax fight look brilliant, thanks to the cinematography by Om Prakash. If Dhanush is one of the pillars of 'Raayan', AR Rahman is another pillar, who shoulders the film. His background score and songs are perfect for it.
