Format Templates and Reference Management

Format templates.

You can write your thesis at our department e.g. using Word or LaTeX. In this section you will find corresponding templates for download. The LaTeX template is optimized for the use with Overleaf . Alternatively, you can duplicate the LaTeX template directly in Overleaf.

The scope of the paper should basically be in accordance with the specifications of the respective valid course description. Currently, we expect about 40 pages in the Bachelor and about 80 pages in the Master , depending on the content of the thesis. Significant deviations should be discussed with the respective supervisor before submission. The requirement refers to the text pages of the thesis including figures and tables but excluding the bibliography and the appendix.

  • Word template
  • LaTeX template

Text appendices should be added at the end of the thesis document in one PDF. Additional digital attachments are possible and may even be reasonable. Please submit these as one ZIP file.

Reference management.

Good theses are based not only on good ideas on your part, but also on good references. You should always try to critically examine each statement and, if in doubt, support it with multiple references. In addition to textbooks from the library and Internet sources, which often provide good overviews, you should familiarize yourself with the following resources for journal and conference papers, which can often give you further and highly topical impulses.

  • AIS Electronic Library: Full-text access to some top journals and the largest international information systems conferences http://aisel.aisnet.org/
  • IEEE Computer Society Digital Library: Full-text access to IEEE Computer Society journals and conference proceedings https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/Xplore/home.jsp
  • ACM Digital Library: Literature and partly full-text database for journals and congress reports of the ACM https://dl.acm.org/
  • Springer Link: Access to textbooks and computer science related conference proceedings from Springer http://link.springer.com/
  • ScienceDirect: Access to computer science-related journals from Elsevier https://www.sciencedirect.com/ (currently no access via TU)
  • Other publisher sites for online access with TU VPN if necessary: Wiley, T&F, Sage, INFORMS https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/ https://www.tandfonline.com/ https://journals.sagepub.com/ https://pubsonline.informs.org/
  • Google Scholar: Research system that sometimes also helps you with a link to the PDF https://scholar.google.de/
  • ResearchGate: Scientific community with many fulltexts https://researchgate.net/
  • arXiv: Preprint server with full access to many peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed papers https://arxiv.org/
  • Social Science Research Network (SSRN): Preprint server with full access to many peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed papers https://www.ssrn.com/
  • dblp - Digital Bibliography & Library Project: Good for bibliography research. No full-text access http://dblp.uni-trier.de/
  • LitSonar: Comparative literature search across several databases http://www.litsonar.com/
  • Dortmund University Library: Overview of the physical and digital holdings of the TU Dortmund https://www.ub.tu-dortmund.de/literatursuche/

If you are unable to access articles (even via "Institutional Access with VPN") there are several ways you can proceed:

  • See if a preprint is available on arXiv, SSRN or ResearchGate or find a linked document via Google Scholar.
  • Write to the authors.
  • Don't search shadow libraries like sci-hub.
  • Write to us.

Points to take into account while writing your master's thesis

The topics you can choose for a master's thesis should be highly relevant for practice and policy and the thesis should to be empirically grounded.

Process of a master's thesis

  • Discuss a possible topic with Prof. Liudvika Leišytė.
  • Write a 2-page proposal (incl. title, table of contents and timeline of the thesis).
  • Get approval for this by Prof. Leišytė.
  • Prof. Leišytė will write a letter to the Central Examinations Office to declare that she will be your supervisor.
  • Write the thesis: in the process, make sure to send the questionnaire for surveys or interview schedules to Prof. Leišytė to get approval before you start your empirical work.
  • Submit your thesis to the Section Central Examinations Office, Dez. 4.3.

Type and time frame of the master’s thesis

  • Generally, all theses at the Professorship are empirical (i.e. the self-organized collection and analysis of data is part of every thesis). This type of thesis has a time frame of 26 weeks (for details see the Prüfungsordnung ).
  • In exceptional cases, theoretical theses are accepted. The specific topic must then be discussed and agreed on with Prof. Liudvika Leišytė. The time frame for this type of thesis is only 17 weeks.

The time frame (count of weeks) starts with the registration of your topic (letter from Prof. Leišytė to the Central Examinations Office).

Topic of the thesis

The topic you choose should relate to the main research fields of the Professorship of Higher Education. Possible Topics:

  • Innovation through organizational learning
  • Stakeholder representation and characteristics in the boards of universities
  • Promotion of collaboration at German universities: policies and practices
  • Changing governance of universities and implications of this for their performance
  • The implementation of gender policies in German universities
  • Characteristics and challenges of an inclusive professional organization

Academic entrepreneurship

  • Policies of German universities to promote spin off creation in Germany
  • The characteristics of founders of new high tech ventures in Germany
  • Motivations of academic entrepreneurs to patent
  • Gender and entrepreneurship: evidence from patenting activities

Academic profession and managerialism

  • The role of new public management on publication behaviour of academics
  • The role of performance based systems on grant acquisition of academics
  • Gender in academia: what are the gender differences in academic productivity?
  • Challenges of integration of foreign knowledge workers in Germany

Preconditions

Master's theses at the Professorship of Higher Education are accepted according to certain preconditions and according to capacities of scientific staff:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Successful completion of two seminars of the Professorship of Higher Education
  • Parallel to master’s thesis: Participation in the Research Colloquium of the Professorship

FAQ & Tutorials

back to list

File format for theses

In what file format should the electronic copy of the thesis be submitted.

Theses must be submitted to the ULB via the TUbama Portal in the file format PDF/A (archivable PDF).

In general, the required file format for the thesis is defined by the examiners (§ 22 APB).

The archivable PDF/A format can generally be created from all standard text editing programs. However, it is necessary to select the correct settings when saving the thesis. In this context, please follow the instructions available for your text editing program.

In any case, it is advisable to carry out a test upload in advance using a file created in PDF/A format to check whether this format is accepted. The following PDF/A file format standards will be accepted: PDFA-1a, PDFA-1b, PDFA-2a, PDFA-2b, PDFA-2u .

The file format will be automatically checked during the upload process. After clicking on “Next >”, you will receive a notification to indicate whether the format of the uploaded file was correct or if it is not in a PDF/A compatible format. You can delete the faulty file again at any time and upload a new file. If the file format is incorrect, this automatically prevents you submitting the thesis.

The file name must not contain any blank spaces or special characters!

In particular, please check whether your graphics with transparent backgrounds are correctly displayed. If you experience any problems, it may be necessary to change the background for your graphics to “white”.

Microsoft Office 2016

In Microsoft Office 2016, you will find the setting for saving the file in PDF/A format under the PDF options.

If you are using a different version of Microsoft Office, please find out the required information in good time.

tu thesis format 2022

Open Office

In Open Office, you will find the setting for saving the file in PDF/A format under “File” -> “Export as PDF…”

In the “PDF options” menu, select “General” ->“PDF/A”

If you are using a different version of Open Office, please find out the required information in good time.

It is also possible to create files in PDF/A format with LaTeX. Please find out how to do this and ensure that you test whether the file for your thesis has the correct file format in advance by completing a test upload.

If you are using the official LaTeX templates of TU Darmstadt, the standard settings of the TUDa-Thesis-Templates will comply with PDF/A-2b-standard (pdfa=true).

Extensions of the title data are possible via the macro \Metata, you will find this documented in the example file.

Please note that the conformity can only be ensured for in LaTeX created contents. Contained images or additional PDF files have to be checked independently on their conformity.

You can use the support service for the TUDa-CI-Templates for further information and help.

Saving in PDF/A format independently of the editing program

There are various programs that install a virtual PDF printer and enable you to print to a PDF file irrespective of the software used to write the thesis.

Examples of these software programs are: PDF24, FreePDF or Adobe Acrobat (not Adobe Reader!!). The PDF/A format can also be selected in these programs.
