For students this means shopping for school supplies, getting familiar with a new classroom, and mentally preparing for the year of assignments and class projects. For teachers, it means a carefully curated curriculum, getting acquainted with new students and their needs, and planning for back to school night and other parent-teacher conferences. The flurry of events leading up to the first week of school can be overwhelming for everyone involved.

Luckily, presentations are your friend here (consider them your unofficial teacher’s aid). 

Back to school night is a chance to create a sense of community between students, their parents, and teachers. It opens up communication, sets expectations, and provides everyone with the resources they need to be successful. Presentations can act as the vessel to deliver that information so that nothing falls between the cracks.

Introduction

It’s likely you’re getting an entirely new class with students you’ve never met before (plus their parents). Your back to school presentation is a chance to introduce yourself and your staff, your background in teaching, your interest in the subject, and your teaching style. In this section you might also include a high level overview of the class.

To keep the introduction portion of your back to school presentation engaging, you can include fun icebreakers like group questions, two truths and a lie quizzes, polls, etc. This not only gamifies the presentation, but it includes your audience in the conversation.

What to expect from this class

Now that the class has a better understanding of who you are, it’s time to tell them what they can expect from you. This section should include the classroom schedule, classroom policies (like no-tolerance policies for harassment, bullying, cheating, etc.), the curriculum, class syllabus, and any big projects in the pipeline. Each student and their guardians should leave the back to school presentation with a strong understanding of what the next school year will entail, and how to stay on track for a successful year.

What we expect from you

Of course, as teachers, there’s a lot you expect from your class. You want them to show up eager and willing to learn. Here’s your chance to tell them. Depending on the age of your students, you may have to rely on the parents to help meet your expectations. This part of your back to school presentation should tell them— both the students and their families— exactly what you’re expecting from them. It can include attendance and behavior expectations, participation, volunteer hours from their folks, as well as quality of work and level of effort. Don’t leave anything up for misinterpretation here (you’ll kick yourself later if you do). 

This section is self explanatory. What resources are available, and required, for the students and their families? This is where you can share a welcome packet, any classroom supplies, reading materials or book lists, a print out of formal processes and policies for parents to have on hand, or a class syllabus. Where applicable, you can link to the pdf file or webpage right within the slide so that your audience can access the materials on their own time and refer back to them as needed. 

This section might be the most important part of the whole back to school presentation. How can your students contact you if they have questions about a project or grade? What about their parents should they have any concerns about their children? The contact slide should share your classroom phone number, the school’s office number in case of emergency, and your email address. Make sure that your new class feels comfortable reaching out to you for support, help, or clarification at any point during the course of the year. 

After this slide, it's an appropriate time to open up the room for final questions. Everyone should leave back to school night feeling good about the upcoming school year, and on the same page.

Mark twain dual language academy welcomes new students from shuttered san antonio isd campuses, the academy staff will welcome about 70 more students this school year.

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Independent School District closed 15 schools at the end of the school year as part of its “rightsizing” plan. Mark Twain Dual Language Academy is one of the campuses that will add more students to its roster because of those closures .

The academy staff will welcome about 70 more students this school year.

“I’m anticipating a lot of excitement,” said David Garcia, principal at Mark Twain Dual Language Academy. “And so, yes, there are going to be some changes here at my campus.”

Garcia said he’s looking forward to the first day of school and meeting dozens of new students.

“Kids coming to us, you know, with the ‘ rightsizing ’ and also with the growth,” said Garcia. “Twain continues to grow.”

With more students coming in, Mark Twain Dual Language Academy will now have two campuses.

The academy has expanded to the old Gonzales campus in addition to the existing campus on San Pedro, which initially housed Pre-K through 8th grade.

“We have now expanded, so we now have Twain Pre-K Dual Language Academy, just five minutes away. We are really excited about that,” Garcia said.

In addition to this move, the academy will add more teachers, such as a Spanish teacher for its middle school program, an additional art teacher, a PE assistant, and technology courses.

“We first have to move people,” Garcia said. “So, what was traditionally the Pre-K classrooms, the kinder class moves over there.”

Garcia said even with all the changes in the district, they are ready for the new school year and the students.

“With the ‘rightsizing,’ with the closings, I’m sure there are challenges,” said Garcia. “But they still have in mind, these are our schools, these are our students, and we’re still going to provide them the best support we can.”

Principal Cara Cronk looked like the most enthusiastic cheerleader of all as she stood on the sidelines welcoming students back Monday to Buddy Taylor Middle Schoo l for the first day of school in Flagler County.

Cronk, other administrators and teachers all wore matching T-shirts, waved and held up handmade signs as parents and students made their way through the drop-off line encircling the campus on Belle Terre Parkway in Palm Coast.

The marching band from Flagler-Palm Coast High School brought the energy even at 7 a.m. with its driving beat and pulsating rhythms.

Cronk clapped along with the music.

"It definitely helps get the jitters out," she said of the accompanying music.

'Every year is a little different'

Cronk is entering her fourth year as principal for Buddy Taylor.

"Every year is a little different from the last," said Cronk. "The students are different every year. We have our new ones trying to find their way around, and then we have our seventh-graders transitioning this year from Building 9 (another part of the campus). Then there's our eighth-graders, many of who have grown up here (in Flagler) over the years."

New and younger middle-schoolers were picked up by teachers from the cafeteria and directed to their classrooms.

Some students arrived by bike to campus for the first day, others by bus and the majority by jumping out of the car of a parent or guardian.

"I like to always tell the parents, 'Go have fun now,'" said Buddy Taylor chorus teacher Ann Paris, who could be seen making her way back and forth down the entrance line wearing a Viking helmet. "They are almost at the four-month point of having kids at home by this point."

Buddy Taylor Middle School is one of 10 schools, including two middle schools, serving the communities of Flagler County. The school district encompasses nearly 14,000 students and over 2,200 employees, making it the largest employer in the county.

Also on hand to welcome students for the first day was Flagler Superintendent of Schools LaShakia Moore who was appointed to fill the vacancy left by the departure of former Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt in June 2023.

Scheduling, busing and parent transportation issues

Cronk said in addition to meeting and greeting students Monday, she would be visiting classrooms and talking to students about the upcoming school year and dealing with any scheduling problems students may have on the first day. Of course, working out any kinks in the school's bus routes as well as helping parents with any issues dropping off or picking up students is always expected in the first days and weeks of a new school year, Cronk said.

Cindy DeSio, a seventh-grade math teacher, said she looked forward to rolling up her sleeves and beginning a new academic year.

"I get as excited as some of the kids," DeSio said with a laugh. "I think it's just always nice to get back to the structure of the program."

Welcome back, instructors! As you prepare for the coming semester, we invite you to join our informational series on the innovative teaching tools available at IC! Hosted by the Center for Instructional Design and Educational Technology, this session will provide a very brief overview of the supported instructional technologies available to faculty at Ithaca College. Whether it's our new student-response system iClicker, the new GetMarked grading tool, or long-established IC tools like VoiceThread, Kaltura, Perusall, and more, you'll find a wide array of resources to enhance your teaching and support your students' learning experience.

Our session, "An Instructor's Technology Toolbox," will feature brief presentations to introduce you to the following tools and their functionalities:

• iClicker (New!)
• GetMarked (New!)
• VoiceThread
• LinkedIn Learning  

These tools have been vetted by the College, do not pass costs to students, use IC authentication, and include many Canvas integrations. CIE members will provide a very brief summary of all the tools and open for questions by participants. Follow-up 1:1 support will be offered to anyone who wants to explore a tool in greater detail.

Aggieland Welcoming New And Returning Students Back To Campus With Howdy Week

Texas A&M University will welcome more than 72,000 Aggies back to campus this fall during Howdy Week.

Howdy Week , Aggieland’s Official Welcome, brings together campus and community partners to help Aggies, both new and returning, connect with organizations and important resources on campus.

“We are maximizing the time between the start of move-in, through the first two days of classes with a variety of featured and general events on our schedule,” said Olivia Elliot, associate coordinator of Student Life’s New Student and Family Programs in the Division of Student Affairs. “Students have the opportunity to build their own Howdy Week experience and really find community in what interests them.”

The six-day schedule will include 11 featured events:

“The overall goal of Howdy Week is to welcome students to Aggieland and foster connections through community,” said Libby Daggers, assistant director of Student Life. “The Howdy Week schedule is built with the intention of providing students with these connection opportunities.”

“I would focus on two key elements of your Aggie experience: academics and extracurriculars. So, maybe go to your college’s open house and then try Rec-A-Palooza or a club event. This way, you can hit all the bases without overtaxing yourself.” – Jillian Skaggs ‘24

Safely Navigate Howdy Week

Aggieland is often hot and humid in August. We highly encourage participants to properly hydrate before, during, and after taking part in outdoor activities. It is also important to take breaks inside during the day.
