Best Sketchbooks: The Ultimate Buyer’s Guide For Artists

Every artist needs a sketchbook to draw on the go and to quickly capture ideas. But picking the right sketchbook can be dizzying with so many options, not to mention different sketchbooks excel at different things(charcoal, toned paper, markers).

If you just need a solid reliable sketchbook for drawing then your best choice is the Pentalic Sketch Book with a spiral bound spine. All pages measure close to A4 size and they’re all perforated so you can tear out any sketches that you wanna keep.

Also the hardbound covers can offer working surfaces to draw anywhere! You can take this sketchbook to the park, on the train, or anywhere you want to draw.

Pentalic Wirebound Sketchbook

This Pentalic sketchbook is sturdy and super easy to carry around. The strong front & back covers are easy to lean against when sketching and the wire binding stays out of the way whether you’re drawing, painting, or just doodling.

Best Features:

  • Measures 8.5″ x 11″
  • Solid cover prevents damage to pages
  • Works great with pencil, ink, and paint(including watercolor)

But you should know that not all sketchbooks are made equal.

Pentalic is a solid choice for someone just looking to sketch—but what about doing finished drawings? Or rendering with chalk or ink?

In this guide I’ll explain the different types of sketchbooks and how to select the best one for your needs.

What To Look For

The first thing you need to consider is why you’re getting a sketchbook and how it’ll be used.

Do you want to draw illustrations and color with marker? Or do you want to use watercolors? Or maybe you want toned paper to work on a fixed background.

There are so many different styles to choose with different sizes, brands, and paper types. Most beginner artists just need a simple sketchbook with white paper that works.

In this case the Pentalic mentioned above is excellent.

But let’s take a look at the different options you might consider:

  • Size(A4/A3/A2)
  • Spiralbound or hardbound
  • Softcover or hardcover
  • Default orientation(landscape or portrait)
  • Type of paper
  • Total number of pages

If you just want a simple sketchbook then the A4 size should be enough. But if you plan to use it for full drawings then you might want something a larger to show off your skills.

I always prefer spiral-bound over hardbound because it feels better for sketching on the go. However when drawing at a desk or on a board the spirals can elevate the book, tilting unevenly to one side.

Sketchbook orientations can always be changed by flipping to page. But you also have to consider where the binding is and if that’ll get in the way of sketching.

All these features can drive you batty if you’re brand new to sketching.

However as you progress and improve you’ll learn a lot about paper types and artistic mediums. You’ll learn which sketchbooks work best for you and which don’t.

My goal with this post is to save you time by helping you pick the right sketchbook for any situation. I’ve organized my top 10 picks here, but if you have other suggestions feel free to share and maybe we can add them to the list.

Pentalic Sketch Spiral Bound

sketchbook review

First up is my top pick for beginners and advanced artists alike. The Pentalic spiral-bound sketchbook has a sturdy construction, 160 pages, and thick paper quality so you can draw heavy & dark without bleeding through.

If you plan to use markers then you’ll want another book. However these pages can hold up with ink, colored pencils, or even very light markers(probably not markers like Prisma).

It measures the standard A4 size of 8.5″ by 11″ so this should feel like drawing on copy paper. Each page is actually pretty smooth too, so it does replicate the feel of copy paper if you’re used to that texture.

The hard covers are strong and will not bend or risk damage your drawings. It also makes the perfect surface to lean against if you don’t have a desk or board handy.

For the price it’s a great buy and you get plenty of pages to work through.

I recommend this Pentalic sketchbook if you need a durable choice to dive in and start sketching. It’s not great for finished work, although you can bring some drawings to a complete render if you wish.

Moleskine Art Plus

sketchbook review

The classic Moleskine Art Plus is a favorite among artists, designers, and writers alike. It’s a universally-loved sketchbook because the brand is trustworthy and the quality is noticeable.

The Art Plus sketchbook is small yet versatile. It measures 5″ x 8.25″ so you can take this pretty much anywhere. It’s a fantastic portable sketchbook that really feels like a quality design.

All of the 104 pages are thread bound meaning they use thread to keep them together. This is a staple of Moleskine notebooks and it’s one reason why people love them so much.

This model is a hardback sketchbook which I find ideal for artists. But they do have paperback sketchbooks if you prefer that style.

I think the hardback is better for resting your palm and for keeping the inner pages free of crinkles. It’s not super hard but it’s definitely strong enough to stand on its own.

You’ll get plain white paper that can hold well through ink and pencil. Plus the book comes with a wrapper elastic to mark your place wherever you leave off. This is a neat little feature so you don’t have to flip around to find the next blank page.

Overall a brilliant sketchbook or notebook for any purpose. Moleskine is top quality and if you’re OK with a classic spine then you can’t go wrong with the Art Plus.

Leda Art Supply Sketchbook

sketchbook review

Leda is another big brand that makes their own sketchbooks for artists of all types. This particular model comes in three sizes: small(3.5″ x 5.5″), medium(5.5″ x 8.2″), and large(7″ x 10″).

The smallest size is really damn small but perfect for on the go. It’s really just a doodling book because the size limits how much you can draw.

Both the medium and large sketchbooks are made for fairly adept artists who want a sizable surface for drawing. They all have the same cover design, paper quality, and number of pages(160 total).

These pages are dense and they can easily support graphite, ink, or charcoal. This is a softcover sketchbook so it is flexible and easy to bend. Great for storage, not so great for keeping your pages straight.

And the Leda sketchbooks use a sewn binding which is much stronger than any glue or adhesive. It’s truly an au naturale sketchbook for artists, writers, draftsmen, animators… pretty much anyone!

Leda’s quality is just as great as Moleskine. The biggest benefit here is the softcover binding and the higher number of pages.

Canson Artist Series

sketchbook review

If we’re talking quality brands then Canson has to come up. They make some of the best art supplies and paper products around.

They have an entire line of Artist Series Sketchbooks all with perforated pages, a spiral binding, and a softcover design.

With this series of sketchbooks you have four different sizes to pick from:

  • 5.5″ x 8.5″
  • 9″ x 12″
  • 11″ x 14″
  • 18″ x 24″

The largest size is really huge and measures two feet wide!

The 18″ sketchbook is the only one with a landscape orientation so if you’re looking for a super long sketchbook it’s gonna be your best bet.

All other sizes use portrait orientation and they all share the same spiral binding.

One thing you might not like is the cover design. It uses ugly Canson branding with splash artwork as a marketing ploy. Most artists(myself included) prefer the solid black color.

But this is only a beauty mark and it does not affect the quality of the pages.

Each sketchbook comes with 100 full pages and supports dry mediums like graphite along with charcoal.

Canson is a reputable brand so their Artist Series is a great choice, especially if you’re looking for a long landscape-oriented sketch pad.

Strathmore Field Sketch

sketchbook review

I’ve been using the Strathmore Field Sketcbook for years and it’s one of my favorites. Not super thick but also not super small.

It only comes with 70 pages which is on the lighter side. But every sheet is made from recycled paper which is eco friendly and often a selling point for artists.

There is some grit to the pages and they have their own “tooth” and texture. These pages are definitely not flat so they can be nice for rendering(although it is sketchbook paper).

The front & back are completely hardcover which is great for artists who like to draw everywhere. And the spiral binding doesn’t interfere when laying flat on the table. This is one of the few spiral-bound sketchbooks that actually lays flat(or close to flat).

Strathmore’s field sketchbook has my seal of approval for beginners and experienced artists alike.

It does not have many pages but every sheet comes from recycled paper and they some nice texture to avoid that flat feeling.

Pro Art Spiral Bound

sketchbook review

The Pro Art spiral-bound sketchbook is yet another A4 8.5″ by 11″ option for artists. This is much cheaper than others because the brand isn’t as well known.

But the paper quality is similar and it works just like every other bound sketchbook.

However one big downside is the quantity. You only get 80 sheets of paper which is still pretty low considering others come with 160.

But every sheet is perforated and comes with a bit of texture too. This is high-quality thick paper made for ink or pencil and charcoal. Probably won’t support watercolors though.

All-in-all a decent buy for the price. It’s nothing special but it does provide a sturdy sketching experience from start to finish.

Strathmore Spiral Toned Sketch

sketchbook review

There are dozens of toned sketchbooks to try with different shades of tan or grey. And the Strathmore Toned Tan sketchbook is an excellent choice for breaking into the world of toned sketchbooks.

This one is dirt cheap since it only comes with 50 pages and it’s fairly small measuring 5.5″ x 8.5″.

But the page quality is superb and it’s my favorite shade amongst all the tanned sketchbooks.

You can hit this paper with anything from graphite to charcoal, chalk to China markers or colored pencils. It’ll hold up with so many different mediums that it’s basically a universal sketchbook.

Seriously this paper quality is incredible. You can absolutely use this to create finished drawings with any medium you like.

And Strathmore has many other toned sketchbooks if you’re looking for a different size or color.

Either way I highly recommend Strathmore for toned work(specifically for beginners). As you get better working on toned paper you can certainly branch out and try others too.

Rendr Hardbound Sketchbook

sketchbook review

If you’re looking for a thick sketchbook that’ll handle any materials then take a peek at the Rendr Hardbound Sketchbook .

It’s surprisingly cheap for such durable paper, although you only get 48 total pages. But you can use everything from ink to copic markers. Nothing will bleed through to the other side.

When you draw with marker it does tend to bleed into the surrounding creases on that side of the paper, but nothing that’s noticeable. It certainly won’t ruin your drawing and you’ll learn to control it with time.

With this hardback book you’ll have no trouble finding a surface to draw on. However it does slant a bit when laying flat on the table so you’ll need to consider that before buying.

Finding a quality sketchbook that also supports markers is a huge task. But Render’s hardbound sketchbook is a brilliant choice for this exact task.

I won’t go so far as to say Render makes the best sketchbook for markers. But I will say it’s in the top five and it’s a brilliant beginner’s book for getting into copic/prisma coloring.

GAM Landscape Sketchbook

sketchbook review

One thing I like about the Global Art Materials sketchbooks is the diversity of styles. Take for example their large landscape sketchbook measuring 5.5″ x 8.25″ with a total of 128 acid-free pages.

From this basic setup you can choose between four different colors for the cover(red, blue, black, and green). And you can pick from five different sizes that also support these differently colored covers.

  • Large Landscape(5.5″ x 8.25″)
  • Large Portrait(8.25″ x 5.5″)
  • Square(5.5″ x 5.5″)
  • Pocket Landscape(3.5″ x 5.5″)
  • Pocket Portrait(5.5″ x 3.5″)

Even the “large” sketchbooks are still pretty small. Surprisingly these are resilient sketchbooks that can take pretty much anything.

You can go to town with markers, graphite, charcoal, any type of ink… pretty much any mediums can work well in this sketchbook. However watch out for watercolors because they may not bleed through, but they can crinkle the pages.

The sheer variety and style of this sketchbook makes it perfect as a travel companion. If you’re looking for a sturdy binding with smaller dimensions then this is your book.

Stillman & Birn Hardbound Landscape

sketchbook review

The Stillman & Birn Alpha Series has a number of great sketchbooks. I’m specifically focusing on their hardbound landscape sketchbook measuring a lofty 9″ x 6″.

It’s surprising how few artists know about this brand. They certainly aren’t popular worldwide but their quality is superb. It’s also tough to find such great paper mixed into a hardcover landscape-oriented sketchbook.

The paper is thick and textured. It comes with a Bristol vellum surface which is tailor made for grabbing any type of pencil, charcoal, crayon, or any similar dry medium.

You only get 62 pages which can be a letdown since the price is higher than most sketchbooks. But if you’re willing to give this a shot then you might be pleasantly surprised with the paper quality—surprised enough to stick with it even with a 62-page sketchbook.

If you’re a complete beginner I’d recommend the Stillman & Birn Gamma sketchbook which uses the portrait orientation while keeping the vellum paper.

Strathmore 400 Field Watercolor

sketchbook review

If you were waiting for a watercolor-focused sketchbook then you’ve finally found it! The Strathmore 400 series comes in landscape orientation with a spiral binding which is perfect for resting on an easel or a drawing board, indoors or outdoors.

I’m not usually a huge fan of the fixed binding but you could also look into the Strathmore STR-483-5 . However that one only comes with 24 pages while the Strathmore 400 has a total of 30 pages(mixing cold press watercolor and sketch).

Strathmore’s field books are some of the best and the spiral binding makes them super easy to leave open anywhere while you work.

I cannot recommend this enough for watercolorists. The paper quality is superb and yes it can be a bit pricey. But it’s also one of the strongest bindings you’ll find.

If you’re looking for a portrait orientation then check out the Pentalic Watercolor Dream Catcher . It has a similar design with stronger pages, yet no spiral binding(unfortunately).

Hardcover Art Alternatives Sketchbook

sketchbook review

Looking for the strongest sketchbook known to man? Want something so huge and bulky that it’ll take you months, if not years, to complete?

Then you’ll adore the Very Big Sketchbook made by Art Alternatives.

This thing is absolutely massive totaling 300 pages(front and back) for a total of 600 sides of paper to sketch your heart away.

I’m not a huge fan of the binding style but it is very high quality. This paper can support gel pens, fountain pens, all forms of graphite/carbon and even some watercolors. But I don’t recommend this as a watercolor sketchbook.

Instead this works better for artists who want to watch their progression over time. In the span of 300 pages you can make a lot of progress, do a lot of studies, and learn so many techniques.

I’d recommend this more for beginner-to-intermediate artists who want to keep it as a journal of their artwork. This thing is massive but it also offers a great drawing experience with thick pages and a hard cover design.

Best Toned Sketchbook

So what is the best toned sketchbook? Depending on what color, size, and orientation you want, this is a tough question to answer well.

But overall I do recommend the Strathmore spiral toned pads for the paper quality and binding.

Spiral bound sketchbooks are just easier to work with(in my opinion) and they offer more flexibility whether you’re drawing on a drawing board or drawing outside in the grass. The only thing I don’t like is the size. The tanned tone sketch pad measures 5.5″ x 8.5″ which feels a bit small to me.

Some artists like to use the gray toned sketchpad which is just as great. It’s a lot bigger(9″ x 12″) and somewhat easier for beginners to pick up.

If you’re new to shading and lighting then a toned sketchbook won’t help you master shadows, lights, or rendering. But a toned sketchbook can help you understand how rendering works and how you can choose to leave out(or add) certain details.

But overall my #1 recommendation here is the Strathmore toned sketchbook.

Best Sketchbook For Markers

There are so many different types of markers that you can use for coloring. How do you even begin looking for sketchbooks?

As a general recommendation I like the Global Art Materials large landscape sketchbook which holds up well with all markers. It comes in many colors and has an elastic wrap to keep your pages bookmarked.

But this isn’t always the best choice since even their largest sketchbook is still kinda small(5″ x 8″).

If you want a large sketch pad for markers then the Canson XL Series is perfect. The smallest Canson size is equal to GAM’s largest sketchbook. And the Canson XL can be purchased as large as 18″ x 24″ which is a huge area for drawing/coloring.

Again this all boils down to your needs. Both are great, yet both work best for different scenarios.

Go with the GAM sketchbook if you’ll be coloring for fun or if you want a portable sketchbook. The Canson XL series is better for larger studies.

Finding Your Sketchbook

Ultimately the best sketchbook is the one that works for you. They all come in different sizes, shapes, bindings, and with a large variety of paper styles.

Picking the best sketchbook is a tough call, especially as a beginner. But it gets easier if you know exactly what you want. I recommend the Pentalic Sketch Book specifically for newer artists who just need a sketchbook to practice more often.

But there is no “wrong” answer so take a look around and see what you can find.

My Criteria for the ‘Best’ Sketchbooks

As a mixed media artist I have two main criteria in choosing a sketchbook:

  • 100% cotton paper
  • Thick paper (150gsm or more)

The sketchbook doesn’t have to be both, but at least one of those things. I prefer 100% cotton so that I can use watercolor. Cellulose paper limits how much water I can use, but it’s not the end of the world as long as the paper is thick.

The rest is all about feeling .

Etchr Sketchbook Review – Super high quality

Etchr sketchbooks review

I have three Etchr sketchbooks, each is slightly different, but all of them are wonderful to work in.

The Signature series uses off-white 300 gsm 100% cotton Fabriano Artistico paper, which is a dream to paint on. Unfortunately it’s limited addition and they still haven’t released a new version of this.

The Perfect Sketchbook uses white 300 gsm but rumours say it’s no longer Fabriano. Some thing it’s Baohong, but I haven’t confirmed. I enjoy it, so I don’t really care what kind of paper it is.

The Everyday Sketchbook is slightly thinner at 230 gsm but it’s still a joy to paint on. I use both sketchbooks interchangeably and never notice the difference.

I find that they both accept several layers of watercolor just fine. They also withstand a fair bit of scrubbing and lifting. The cold pressed finish has a deep texture, but the pattern isn’t annoying like some other brands (Saunders Waterford Rough – yuck!). If you like texture, you will love their cold pressed sketchbooks.

Of course being 100% cotton paper means they come with a higher price tag. Paying over £40 per sketchbook hurts a little at first, but after a few pages I forget that and just enjoy the experience.

Painting on super high quality paper makes the experience so much more enjoyable. It means I’m never fighting my materials. I’m able to do anything I can imagine, within my skill set. Have you ever painted on cheap paper that buckles or won’t let you layer (Moleskine) ? If so you know the pain! Painting is hard enough as it is – don’t torture yourself with bad paper.

On a side note, I’m not a huge fan of the hard covers. I find them a bit too bulky for my taste, then again I am a softcover fan in general.

Etchr sketchbooks are an investment in yourself and pleasure to paint in.

Strathmore Watercolor Journal Review – My Favorites, but Discontinued

Strathmore travel journal sketchbook review

Edit: I heard back from Strathmore and they confirmed these have been discontinued.

These are probably my favorite sketchbook all around. I know it’s just a few sheets of paper sewn together but dayum that’s some nice paper.

The paper quality is superb, the whole thing weighs almost nothing, and I really like the sizes – a unique 7×10 inch portrait. The texture is not quite as intense as the Etchr, but still offers tons of character. I think it is just right.

I use these almost exclusively outside because of their portability and quality. Being able to capture my surroundings on the trail is one of my favorite hobbies, and using really nice paper makes it that much more enjoyable. Since they are so light, I barely feel it in my bag.

I was truly devastated when I went to restock these sketchbooks and couldn’t find a single one for sale, outside of an overpriced Etsy shop in the USA. I have emailed Strathmore twice with no response, wondering when they will re-enter the supply chain. I’ve had friends from across the world send me one when they randomly find it online. It’s a bummer. If you find them for a decent price, just buy it!

This dilemma has made me consider learning how to bind my own…maybe someday!

A Surprising Sketchbook from Hahnemühle

sketchbook review

This is the 100% cotton sketchbook by Hahnemühle. I bought this on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. For the price, it performs well. It’s not as good as the higher quality brands, but I have really enjoyed it for my outdoor painting adventures. The paper holds up to almost everything I throw at it, except I haven’t tried markers in it.

I really enjoy how lightweight this sketchbook is, even though it’s hardcover. The paper is slightly thinner than the Strathmore but it still holds a fair bit of water. Overall I consider it to be a good “lower tier” 100% cotton sketchbook. Not GREAT but gets the job done.

Stillman & Birn Sketchbook Review – Great for every day use

Stillman & Birn sketchbooks review

Affordable and sturdy as heck! I take these outside a lot and they withstand a fair bit of abuse (sorry, sketchbooks). These sketchbooks are not 100% cotton, but the paper is thick so they handle whatever I throw at them. I use pencil, ink, watercolor, gouache and markers in these. I kind of consider them my ‘catch all’ sketchbooks. I keep on in the car, by the door, on the couch and in my studio.

When using paint, I do have to use less water than usual. It takes a little longer for watercolor to ‘sink in’ to the paper. Once it does, I can work with it a little easier. It took some getting used to, so this may not be ideal for total beginners, who might already struggle with technique.

But gouache is great on this paper. I don’t use a ton of water with gouache so that paper matters less. The smoothness of the paper allows for easy application, especially great if you need a large flat color because the paper texture won’t interfere. Even the cold pressed version (Beta) isn’t that textured.

The Stillman & Birn website has a breakdown of all the options. From what I can tell, they name them based on color/thickness of paper.

So just choose which paper weight you prefer, then the color. that will help you decide which series you need.

  • 270 gsm slightly textured paper: Beta (white), Delta (ivory)
  • 270 gsm smooth paper: Zeta (white)
  • 150 gsm slightly textured paper: Alpha (white), Gamma (ivory)
  • 150 gsm smooth paper: Epsilon (white)
  • 150 gsm Toned (grey, beige, or black): Nova

In addition, you can choose from hardcover, softcover, and spiral bound. I love the softcover. It feels so good in the hand, it’s lighter overall, and sometimes being able to fold the paper back is helpful (like when I’m sketching outside in the wind). They are sewn really well and hold up to a lot of folding!

My Favorites are the Beta and Nova Beige.

I first discovered Stillman & Birn by watching Brenda Swenson ’s review on YouTube. I was blown away by her gorgeous paintings and the ‘freshness’ of her sketches. It inspired me to try them, and I’m so glad for that.

Try indigo 100% cotton rag watercolour sketch books from artway in A5 £8.50 also A6 I have two A 5 &two A6 they are excellent sketch books and can recommend for there quality and value for money they are available in hard bound and they may be available

Wonderful information Sarah! BTW, the page count on the Paul Rubens is 40 (20 sheets). One of my faves to paint on for plein air (plus I love the pink cover). I miss the Strathmore cotton journal!

Ah oops! I’ll update it.

Possibly BitterMelonBindery can help you get a custom sketchbook with paper you love…Her name is Chanel. Has a great YouTube channel as well…Good Luck!!

Hey, if you looking for sketchbook with Fabriano paper, maybe try https://kovalshop.com/ he is making handmade sketchbooks using Fabriano and Saunders Waterford papers and they are awesome quality. I’m using now one with Fabriano CP, but you can buy there also HP and Fabriano 5 sketchbooks. I love them and if you looking for good sketchbook with famed quality paper I think you like it. Also I love your videos they highly encourage me to paint everyday.

Am I right in thinking you used a Seawhite watercolour sketchbook in one of your videos? What do you think of them? They are of course cellulose, at the cheaper end of the market, but easily affordable.

Yes a long time ago I had one. It’s a bit frustrating for watercolor but it was OK for gouache or drawing. Maybe very loose ink & watercolor washes that don’t require layering would be ok.

Hey Sarah, Wet Paint is an art store in Minnesota that sells online and stocks the Strathmore sketchbooks and paper. Wetpaintart.com 🙂

A few people mentioned that to me. They are super overpriced plus they require a minimum order of $190 to ship to UK 😂 Thanks anyway!

Thanks for reviewing your sketchbook choices, Sarah. I’ve used almost all of these with all of the same mediums as you, and with similar sentiments about each. Another you might try is Koval sketchbooks (I think they come from Poland). I have the hotpress portrait one, I think it’s a B5 (like my Perfect Sketchbook CP). Hardcover with Fabriano 100% cotton and definitely opens out flat so can use double page spread. Only thing is I wish cover corners were rounded rather than 90 degree. About same cost as Signature sketchbook, same size. Hand made. I treat myself to the expensive ones every so often and it’s a joy to use them.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll check them out. I like to treat myself once in a while too!

The best sketchbooks for artists available now

Product shot of one of the best sketchbooks, Moleskine

Size : 5 x 8.25 inches Pages / paper weight : 240 / 121lb The larger of two sizes, this gives plenty of room but is great for sketching on the go thanks to its elastic closure, which keeps it neatly closed, and rounded corners that won't get bent. We found the ivory-coloured paper to be smooth but with enough tooth for most dry media. With 240 pages, you won't worry about filling it too quickly.

Product shot of one of the best sketchbooks, Leda Art Supply Premium Sketchboo

Size : 7x10 inches Pages / paper weight : 160 / 81lb We think this superb all-rounder is the best sketchbook for beginners. It's a little smaller than A4 size so fits into most folders and bags and it's inexpensive enough for everyday practice. Its cover is waterproof, though it is flexible, so you'll need a hard surface to support it. The cream-coloured pages have micro-perforations for easy removal.

Product shot of one of the best sketchbooks, Strathmore 400

Size : 9 x 12 inches Pages / paper weight : 50 / 60lb With a fine tooth that carries graphite, coloured pencils and pastels well, we think this is the best sketchbook for professionals. This is the smallest in a wide range of sizes (up to 18 x 24 inches). The price per sheet makes it expensive for regular practice, but we found it a delight to use and ideal for structural sketches.

Product shot of one of the best sketchbooks, Bellofy Artist Sketchbook

Size : 12 x 1 x 9 inches Pages / paper weight : 100 / 1.10lb We found this super-thick, premium paper is strong and smooth enough to carry wet media like ink or watercolour and allow dry media like charcoal and pencil to slide. It's acid-free, which helps reduce blotches and smudges, and it's made from recycled paper. Spiral bound at the top, it lies flat without the annoyance of the spiral on the side – great for left-handed artists.

Product shot of one of the best sketchbooks, Canson Artist Series Watercolor Pa

Size : 5.5 x 8.5 inches Pages / paper weight : 20 / 140lb Mixed-media pads can be useful but rarely perform as well as pads designed for specific tasks. This watercolour pad is specially made to withstand repeated washes. Thick paper ensures that it won't ripple or deform as it dries, and there'll be no bleeding. Pages are perforated, but Canson has factored that into the size, so you don't lose paper.

Product shot of one of the best sketchbooks, Ohuhu marker sketchbook

Size : 8.3 x 8.3in / 8.3 x 11.7in Pages / paper weight : 78 / 120lb Ohuhu creates markers so it makes sense that offer a decent sketchbook for them. The paper is pleasingly thick, and markers glide across it easily. A translucent sheet stops bleed-through, but you'll be able to see markers on the other side of the paper, which means you can only really use one side with markers.

Product shot of one of the best sketchbooks, Strathmore 400 Series Toned Tan Pad

Size : 9 x 12in Pages / paper weight : 50 / 80lb The best sketchbooks with toned paper are ideal for learning to use values since they encourage a whole range, helping achieve more realistic results. Strathmore offers a grey-toned pad, but this is our pick since its warm colour lends life to portraits. The smooth texture works strongly with coloured pencils and graphite, though it carries all dry media well.

Product shot of one of the best sketchbooks, Pentalic Wire-Bound Sketch Book

Size : 4 x 6in Pages / paper weight : 80 / 70lb This is the best sketchbook compact enough to fit in a pocket – and tough enough to survive rough treatment. Its hard cover prevents damage from knocks and scrapes, while its double-wire spiral binding is resistant to bending. There are no perforations for tearing out pages, so this is better for exercises and rough work.

Product shot of one of the best sketchbooks, Canson

Size : 18 x 24in Pages / paper weight : 35 / 65lb Many of the best sketchbooks are around A4 size, but there's no need to confine your work. This range has a version that's two feet long. The spiral binding lets it lie flat as you work, while the hard cover provides protection and support. Pages are easy to remove to store in a portfolio. It doesn't have a great deal of tooth though, so it's best for pencils and charcoal.

What size sketchbook should I get?

There's no universal answer to this question and pretty much comes down to personal preference. Smaller pocket-sized books are ideal for quick sketches on the go, while larger books offer more space for detailed work. So if you want to work outdoors, there may be a compromise to be made there. We've included a wide range of options in our list above, so there's certain to be one that's the perfect size for you.

Which weight of paper is best for sketching?

Most of the best sketchbook brands will display the grams (or lb) per square metre of their paper. This refers to the weight of the paper. Generally, the heavier, the higher the quality of the paper.

Paper with a weight of 75-90 gsm / 50-60 lb is generally heavy enough for sketching with pencils, pastels or charcoal but too thin for ink or markers, which could bleed through it. A weight of around 100-130 gsm / 70-80 lb is generally suitable for finished pieces in a range of media. For very rough sketches, any kind of paper can suffice, even office printer paper, which tends to have a weight of around 80 gsm. However, it doesn't offer the most satisfying feel and isn't the most practical to carry around and keep your sketches.

For watercolours, you will generally want a paper of at least 300 gsm / 140 lb. Ideally, you will want heavier paper than that to avoid having to stretch the paper beforehand. Cotton paper, sometimes called 'rag paper' is better than wood pulp paper for watercolours, especially if you do a lot of scrubbing and masking, but it is usually more expensive.

What is 'tooth' in terms of sketchbook paper?

Tooth describes the surface of the paper, with high tooth having more texture and low tooth being smoother. High-tooth papers feel more bumpy and textured. They grab onto pigments and create a more granular, "grippy" effect with dry media like charcoal, pastels or pencils. Low-tooth papers in contrast feel very smooth and almost waxy. This kind of paper provides the least amount of grip for dry media but is good for fine, precise lines and washes made using wet media such as watercolour brushes .

Are spiral or bound sketchbooks better?

Again, this depends on personal preference, but it's still an important consideration. Spiral binding is generally a bit more durable than tape-bound sketchbooks, and allow you to lie the book flat, but they're more likely to snag on things in your bag if you're sketching on-the-go. Tape-bound sketchbooks look nice and professional, but you'll want to take good care of them to keep the binding secure.

How to choose the best sketchbook

The best sketchbook can be different for each artist. Different paper is different for different mediums: you'll need thick, heavy paper for markers and watercolours, and lighter paper for dry media. You'll also need to consider the 'tooth' or 'texture' of the paper. Pencils and inks work best with smooth paper, whereas charcoal and pastels are well suited to paper with more bite, as the pits and grooves hold pigment.

The binding of the sketchbook is also worth considering. A spiral-bound sketchbook will lie flat when you work on it, whereas some hardbound sketchbooks can be more tricky to use. Lastly, there's the question of size. For sketching on the move, a smaller hardcover sketchbook is handy as it fits into a bag or pocket and protects your work. Large-format sketchbooks will offer more space and freedom on the page.

How we test the best sketchbooks

We test sketchbooks and sketchpads with six different media: pen, pencil, pastels, charcoal, markers and, where appropriate, watercolours. We consider paper quality, weight, texture, and permanence, and also consider format and price to choose the best sketchbooks for different requirements, including options for beginners, for travel, and for different media.

How to Choose a Sketchbook for Artists

sketchbook review

Cover and Binding

You may find sketchbooks with two binding choices such as hardbound and spiral bound. If you consider the spiral bound, you can easily turn the pages and use both sides. Whereas hardbound will have large volumes of papers. You should go for your preference and flexibility in choosing the sketchbook with the suitable binding option.

Size is the first factor to focus on when buying a sketchbook. You can see the sketchbook for A3 or A4 sizes in the market. If you want to explore the whole page and sketch it out then you can go for a larger size, such as A3.

Paper and its quality are important factors when buying a sketchbook. As a professional, you must look for some features like paper weight, texture, etc. But for that. you must first check for the mediums you are using in the book such as charcoal, watercolor, etc.

While considering the weight, the paperweight is mentioned in the form of GSM which is good for beginners. Even though all the sketchbooks have addressed weight in GSM the weight of each brand may vary from the other. If you want to use watercolors in a sketchbook, you can go for 200 GSM. So other than a paperweight, you can also check for the textures. Medium-grain paper is one of the best choices for beginners. To go for a particular medium, you may choose smooth or mild textures.

Considering the above-mentioned features, this article lists the best sketchbooks for artists.

Sketchbook Review: 8 Random Sketchbooks (including HOT TAKES)

Eight sketchbooks reviewed

I recently realized I had accumulated quite a stack of sketchbooks to review. I was not sure the best way to present them so I decided to just review them altogether. There are EIGHT different sketchbooks from seven different companies and include different types of paper, binding methods, number of pages, price points and other variables.

Why review them together? Because when I am picking out sketchbooks, I am usually looking for some key features regardless of other variables. Specifically, I look for paper durable enough to withstand a variety of pen, ink and water tools (watercolor markers, some light watercolor, etc).

Will I reject a sketchbook if it doesn’t an elastic closure or gusseted pocket in the back? No. Am I less likely to buy a notebook again if it doesn’t lay flat? Maybe. Will I abandon or trash a sketchbook with crappy paper? Yes. Everytime.

I use sketchbooks like other people might use a regular notebook — except instead of random ideas written out, I will sketch out thumbnails for a potential new product, practice lettering and calligraphy, paint my lunch or a sleeping cat, write notes, test out new inks, glue down some random bits, etc. This means good paper is paramount. A lay flat binding is highly advantageous but if the binding is good ( Smyth sewn or the like) then I can manhandle it until is does lay flat.

So, with these specifications, I decided to go ahead and include all EIGHT sketchbooks I currently have and use the same criteria to tests and compare:

  • fountain pen ink
  • watercolor test
  • various writing pens

The notebooks I tested are as follows:

90×139 mm (3.5×5.5”) 92 pages (46 sheets) 150gsm Softcover $11.95
90×139  mm (3.5×5.5”) 52 pages (26 sheets) 270 gsm Softcover $11.95
92×150 mm (A6) 96 page (48 sheets) 180 gsm Hardcover Two ribbon bookmarks, elastic closure, guested pocket $17.50
136×193 mm 70 pages (35 sheets) 224gsm Spiral Elastic, gusseted pock front & back, ribbon bookmark, notebook canoe removed and  replaced, included inktober info $28.50
147x210mm (A5) 40 pages (20 sheets) 300gsm Hardcover Flat pocket in back cover (2021 Inktober Edition), included inktober info $20.00
148x210mm (A5) 30 pages (60 sheets) 180gsm Hardcover Pencil loop, elastic closure $15.25
 182x257mm (B5) 100 sheets 96gsm Glue bound pad $18.00
203×235 mm (8×9.25”) 112 pages (56 sheets) 100lb (approx 160gsm) Hardcover  Elastic closure, gusseted pocket, ribbon bookmark $30.00

The chart above is organized by size with the smallest A6 (3.5×5.5″) books first then A5, B5 and the largest at 8×9.25″. The chart lists most sketchbooks by their European sizes as I suspect most readers are fairly familiar with A5 size (roughly 5.5×8.5″ for those unfamiliar) and A6 is essentially half the size of an A5.

A5-ish sketchbooks

The paper weights vary from 96gsm all the way up to 300gsm but just because a paper is very heavy weight did not mean it was better. The papers also had different textures as well, from very smooth to very rough.

In terms of color, the paper color is also an array from a bright white to a deep ivory.

Sketchbook paper color comparison

The sketchbooks I tested also had an array of binding and cover options. What this allowed me to do is establish that I don’t really care about the binding or the cover material as long as the paper is good and the overall sketchbook is durable. I prefer a hard- or softbound book over the spiral or pad. I find that pads do not have durable enough covers and thee pages may fall out when I least expect it. Though pads do make it easy to remove pages for hanging, scanning or burning, whichever the case may be. Hard or softbound sketch books, when bound well, can bee used “across the fold” for a larger format that is harder to do with a spiral bound. Spiral bound are the easiest to fold open but the rings can get in the way for some people.

So, let’s cut to the “which is your favorite.” Here is my ranking:

  • Stillman & Birn Alpha & Delta (tied)
  • Shinola Sketchbook
  • Clairefontaine Goldline
  • Maruman Sketch
  • Leuchtturm 1917 Sketchbook
  • Viviva Cotton A5 & Mossery Sketchbook (NO!)

A6 sized Leuchtturm 1917 sketchbook and Stillman & Birn small sketchbooks

1 & 2. Stillman & Birn

I have always preferred the S&B sketchbooks since they first appeared on the scene several years ago. Their range of sizes, paper weights and colors and cover options make them probably the best sketchbook choice in the US. Whether S&B are as readily available outside the US, I am less certain. However, if you are a US resident, I recommend trying S&B for yourself. I have always favored the Alpha for its slightly toothy paper and value but the Delta is with its extra thick paper makes it an equally good option. Don’t fear the page-to-price difference between S&B’s 150gsm paper and 270gsm knowing the heavier stock will easily allow use of both sides of the sheet with heavy coverage where the 150gsm might have some show through and require using only one side of the paper. Once you’ve decided if you want smooth or toothy, white or ivory, the hardest decision is what size and binding to choose. I normally go for A5 sized sketchbooks but with these sketchbooks for review I chose the smaller, pocketable A6-ish (3.5×5.5″) and I have really enjoyed them. They are less noticeable if you like sketching in public and require simplifying a sketch to its essence to fit on such a small space.

color comparison between Delta and Alpha

The photo above shows the color different of the paper stocks. The Delta on the left is warmer and the Alpha is a bright white.

S&B Delta Fountain pen ink test

The fountain pen ink tests on the Alpha and Delta paper show the color and textural differences. I have only included the reverse image of the Alpha paper. The Delta paper reverse images are actually the watercolor swatch samples — the paper was so opaque, I could easily use both sides without ANY show through.

S&B Alpha Fountain pen ink test

Again, for the writing samples, I am showing both the Delta and Alpha paper and the reverse of the Alpha paper. The Delta was so opaque, there was no show through and I continued using the reverse side of the paper for the next test.

sketchbook review

Finally, the watercolor tests on the Delta and Alpha paper plus the back of the Alpha paper. The texture is visible on the Delta paper (top) and the granulation of the watercolor paint is more visible on the Alpha.

3. Shinola Sketchbook

Shinola Sketchbook cover

My second pick in the Shinola Sketchbook. Where the S&B sketchbooks were small and pocketable, the Shinola is the largest sketchbook in this review.

I find the whole idea of the Shinola brand to be a bit pretentious but, damn if the sketchbook isn’t worth the hype. The exterior is minimal, the overall construction is sturdy and includes all the “extras” that make it feel as much like a notebook as a sketchbook and the paper is aces.

Shinola Sketchbook

The downside of the Shinola sketchbook is, of course, the price. It’s one of the most expensive notebooks I reviewed (a comparable S&B would be the 7×10″ spiral bound books that retail for $24.95 however the S&B is a spiralbound not hardcover) and it is only available in only one size with either a black or orange cover.

Despite preferring a smaller sketchbook, the Shinola turns out to be a pleasing size — not TOO big after all.

Shinola Sketchbook

Above is the front and back of the fountain pen ink tests on the Shinola Sketchbook paper. The dip pen ink seems to hold up pretty well and the swash of color is clean and true-to-color. The paper was smooth enough not to catch the nib and though there is a little waffling of the paper from the water, there is almost no bleed through.

Shinola Sketchbook

The watercolor swatches on the Shinola sketchbook paper are smooth and show some granulation of the pain. The violet even shows a bit of sheening. In other ink experiments I didn’t get a lot of evidence of sheening but the sizing on the paper differs a bit from one side to the other so YMMV.

Shinola Sketchbook

There was a little bleed through with the watercolor paint but not terrible.

Shinola Sketchbook

With the writing samples, the ink and line weight fidelity is good and there is very little show through on the reverse side of the paper.

Clairefontaine Goldline A5

#4 Clairefontaine Goldline

Next in my faves is the Clairefontaine Goldline. It would have rated higher than the Shinola if it weren’t harder to find in the US and to find alternate sizes.  The horizontal A5 format is designed to cater to nature sketchers with the wide page folios but, for someone like me who is more likely to be drawing in a coffeeshop, airplane or on the couch, the long format is a bit unwieldy for me. However, the paper is great. I appreciate the effort to add extras but the elastic loop only holds a pencil, its not wide enough for pens. For UK and European readers, the Clairefontaine Goldline might be a great option for you. On the Clairefontaine website , there are six sizes available plus an assortment of other sketchbooks and pads to try.

Clairefontaine Goldline A5

The smooth paper in the Clairefontaine Goldline took fountain pen ink really well. The linework is crisp and clean. There was NO show through to the back of the paper.

Clairefontaine Goldline A5

Watercolor on the Goldline is vivid and there was very little buckling of the paper after all the water application — bonus!

Clairefontaine Goldline A5

Writing samples were crisp and clean. The paper took all the ink well and did not feather or absorb the ink. Some of the other papers showed some ink spread but the Goldline kept fine lines fine and the brush pen work smooth and clean.

The Goldline really is a gold standard in paper quality. I am not crazy about the natural, linen-like textured fabric cover but I tend to be messy so easy-to-clean black sketchbooks are my preference. Maybe it was years of art school and the classic black sketchbook but I feel like everything else is trying too hard.

Maruman Soho Sketch 96gsm

#5 Maruman Soho Sketch (B5)

At #4 is the Maruman Soho Sketch. This paper is super smooth and takes fountain pen ink, markers and other pens really well. Yes, there is more bleed through with this paper than any of the others I recommend but the value of 100 easy-to-tear out pad means that, for the price, its a good value. It’s also the thinnest, smoothest paper so the likelihood of bleed or show through was likely to be higher.

If you’re looking for a hardcover “notebook-style” sketchbook, this is definitely going to be aesthetically underwhelming. However, if your goal is to “play” with fountain pen ink, then I would recommend the Maruman Soho Sketch just be sure to get the 96gsm paper, not the 126gsm  which is toothier.

Maruman Soho Sketch

The tapebound binding lays flat but doesn’t seem particular durable for carrying around in a backpack for daily use. On a desk though, it would be fine for regular use.

sketchbook review

Just looks at how the dip pen and ink splash performed on the Maruman paper! For fountain pen ink play, the Maruman Soho Sketch is great. There is definitely bleed through with the paper but with 100 sheets per pad, only being able to use one side of the sheet is okay.

sketchbook review

With the watercolor test, the Soho paper got a little waffly/crinkly, so I would definitely recommend this paper to ink art and doodling rather than heavy applications of watercolor.

sketchbook review

The back of the watercolor test shows how much of the paint bleeds through.

sketchbook review

The writing samples show how “ink friendly” the Maruman Soho Sketchbook is.

sketchbook review

Again, there is a little show through on the back side of the paper but its most obvious where water was added and where the heaviest brush pen was used.

sketchbook review

This close-up shows just how crisp the paper behaves with ink.

Leuchtturm 1917 Sketchbook

#6 Leuchtturm 1917 Sketchbook

Last is my recommendation is the Leuchtturm 1917 Sketchbook. The paper is better quality than the comparable Moleskine Sketchbook (not to be confused with the Moleskine Watercolor sketchbook which features toothier paper). The Leuchtturm is a  brighter white than the Moleskine Sketchbook and doesn’t have a waxy coated feel when applying various media to it. The Leuchtturm 1917 Sketchbook has two ribbon bookmarks like their regular notebooks but I’m not sure that’s really necessary for a sketchbook. It handles most pen well and fountain pen ink when used traditionally.

Leuchtturm 1917 fountain pen ink test

Once you start trying to apply fountain pen ink like watercolor or use a dip nib, things start to get a little messy. The bleed or showthrough isn’t terrible so if you’re wanting a little “play” sketchbook that’s in line with their regular paper notebooks, then this is a good option.

There’s some feathering with the dip pen that’s interesting but not the sort of results I was expecting. On the reverse, there is a little bit of bleed through of the ink.

Leuchtturm 1917 fountain pen ink test, revers of stock

For a smooth stock, the watercolor applied fairly well with just a little bit of bleed through on the back.

Leuchtturm 1917 writing tests

Pen tests are really where the Leuchtturm sketchbook paper performed best. The only place where I got any bleed through was where I applied water to the marker. I feel like the Leuchtturm Sketchbook might be a good option for someone who wants to do a highly decorated bullet journal.

Leuchtturm 1917 Writing close-up

The line quality maintained fidelity though there is an unusual “salty” look to the marker ink when I zoomed in. While it looks a little odd in the macro view, the ink stayed on the paper, not IN the paper.

Leuchtturm 1917 writing test, reverse of stock

When compared dollar-for-dollar, the Stillman & Birn sketchbooks are a better value and better paper. You might be losing a fancy, gusseted pocket and two ribbon bookmarks trading the Leuchtturm for an S&B sketchbook but you’d be gaining better paper.

Mossery Sketchbook

Not Recommended

The two sketchbooks I would not recommend are the Mossery Sketchbook and the Viviva Colors A5 Cotton.  Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend the Mossery to ANYONE. The Mossery Sketchbook, despite listing 224gsm mixed media paper, is not good for almost all the tools I tried. If you’re a pencil sketcher, than the Mossery might be fine but seriously… who uses only pencil?

Mossery Writing Samples

All the pen ink looked soft and sort-of squishy. This paper behaved like cheap office copy paper despite being very heavyweight.

Mossery pen close-up

After seeing all the other marker close-ups, its clear that the Mossery paper was not up for the challenge of a bullet tip marker. The Pentel Touch is not a fancy tool, its the Japanese equivalent of a PaperMate Flair pen. I feel like a sketchbook that touts ON THE COVER that it is “suitable for pencil, pastel, charcoal, watercolor, gouache and ink” should actually be suitable for those tools. Sadly, the Mossery is NOT suitable for anything but pencil really.

Mossery Writing Samples reverse of stock

The fountain pen ink test on Mossery showed a lot of feathering and showed unusual color shifts almost like a chromotography test .

Mossery fountain pen ink test, reverse side

The bleed through on the back of the Mosssery paper is serious.

Watercolor test on Mossery

Watercolor inks “sunk” into the Mossery paper and could not be moved like other papers designed for watercolor where it’s much easier to add more water and scoot the paint or ink around. The burgundy and Persian swatches show distinct paint strokes like a wet-on-dry painting technique despite being done wet at the same time.  I’d describe this paper as “absorbent like toilet paper”. Paper designed for inks and watercolor have a little sizing on the paper to keep the inks and paint “up” on the paper and not absorbed into the fibers (the Goldline sketchbook is a good example of this).

Mossery watercolor test, reverse side

The Mossery had the worst bleed through but I couldn’t get past the weird absorbency of the paper. It was practically SUCKING the paint from my brush.

Mossery details

On the plus side, the Mossery is spiral bound and the interior notebook can be replaced. There are two gusseted pockets and a ribbon bookmark built into the cover. However, none of this is enough to get me to recommend the Mossery Sketchbook. If you buy one or already have one, I would recommend using it for collage rather than using the paper for any kind of ink or water-based media. I might save the cover and make a custom Col-o-ring notebook to slip into the cover. Because the cover is pretty but the paper — sheesh!

Mossery details

And finally, the Viviva Colors A5  Cotton is the other sketchbook I would not recommend. The paper texture is extremely textured and a very dark ivory color. If color and ink fidelity is important to you, this paper is NOT for you. The rough surface creates a very uneven surface for pencils, fine tipped pens and creates rough edges when using wet media like watercolor or brush pens.

Viviva Colors A5 cotton Sketchbook

The pocket in the back is not gusseted. This flat pocket is difficult to use. I almost would have preferred no pocket to unusable pocket.

sketchbook review

The cover is not attached to the paper block, just the back of the block is attached to the cover. Though the paper looks to have a sewn binding, there is a lot of glue in the binding so it is difficult to fold the pages back completely without creasing the paper at the edge of the binding tape.

Viviva Colors A5 cotton Sketchbook

The color fidelity of the watercolors, despite the warm white paper color is good and if you like cold press paper for watercolor, then this might appeal to you. For most casual artists, this paper is too rough for general use though. Viviva does sell another sketchbook featuring smooth paper that might be a better option for most folks.

Viviva Colors A5 cotton Sketchbook

The ink from pens did not bleed on the paper but the bumpy surface made my handwriting look a bit shaky. It’s most notable in the Acroball writing. When water was added, there was some weird color haloing with the “permanent” inks.

sketchbook review

It’s quite noticeable how rough the surface of the paper is when you see the ink swatch when compared to other papers sampled here. The dip pen ink didn’t feather but it was scratchy trying to use it on paper this rough.

sketchbook review

When viewed from the back of the sheet, there was no noticeable bleed through on the Viviva Colors paper.

If you scrolled through all eight sketchbook reviews and all 64 photos, give yourself  pat on the back then go out and buy yourself a Stillman & Birn sketchbook. Even if you don’t buy an Alpha or Delta version, its unlikely that you will be disappointed in the quality of the S&B sketchbooks and you can get on with focussing on your ideas, drawings and projects and think less about your sketchbook.

You didn’t mention which books used sizing for the surfaces of the paper and it’s sizing that plays a major role in determining how the paper responds to water media. It’s also the amount of sizing and what kind it is that makes for smooth or bumpy writing. I’d like to read your take on which of the top three has sizing and it’s effect. Thanks for writing the enjoyable review. Frank

I didn’t go into detail about the sizing because it’s not something companies publish in the info about their sketchbooks or paper. That said, I don’t think the Mossery had any sizing at all. I suspect all the others had some kind of surface treatment

Doesn’t the inconsistent sizing on Stillman & Birn bother you? I have the same issue and can see them in your photos, darker color collecting in dots where sizing is missing, and also bleeding through in those spots to the other side.

I contacted Stillman & Birn about this issue but they never responded.

It’s a cost benefit analysis. There are papers with better sizing but are considerably more expensive so I have to decide if I can live with the inconsistencies for the price.

I can’t believe that it has anything to do with the price because their epsilon series, which is 150gsm and thus cheaper, never has sizing issues while the more expensive 270gsm zeta series often has spots without sizing on them.

And so the thicker zeta series paper bleeds through while the thinner epsilon never does. It just seems like a case of a defective product to me.

This explains why I have not noticed the issue to the same extent. I frequently use the 150gsm sketchbooks but have only used one or two of the 270gsm books and those were the TINY ones.

Great Job Ana! I always regret not using my stillman and birn. I think I may track down the Clairefontaine as I have had good luck with their other products and if I can get over the cover the paper seems really nice.

Thanks for the review and I’ll be intered now to try Goldline, which I’ve skipped so far. Stillman and Burn are definitely the best out there (I’m in Australia). Second value for money (without giving up quality) is Strathmore. Third, I’ve been having a lot of fun with Seawhite of Brighton. I use both ink and watercolour, sometimes in the same book, sometimes separately. For mostly writing with occasional painting Paperblanks is quite good (depending on weight of paper in the book).

Thank you for responding, I appreciate it. Frank

Excellent and useful comparison review! I’m happy that you confirmed my first choice of S&B, which I have used and loved for years. I had never heard of the Mossery, but perhaps you could store that one in the bathroom for emergencies (like the next pandemic). 😉

13 of the Best Sketchbooks That Artists of All Abilities Love to Draw In

Drawing in a Sketchbook

A sketchbook is the ultimate artist's companion. Like a close friend, you'll spend a lot of time with it and tell it your inner thoughts (through drawing, painting, and writing). Many artists will regularly fill their pads with a bevy of drawings. Some are so polished that their books feel like mobile art galleries . But, gorgeous spreads aren’t the point of keeping a sketchbook. These books are private places to record your doodles, ideations, and observations without the pressure of sharing them with the world. If you want to, that’s great—but first a foremost, a sketchbook should be a place just for you.

So, how do you go about picking the perfect sketchbook for you? Well, there are a few things you'll have to consider…

Drawing in a Sketchbook

Photo: Stock Photos from Africa Studio/Shutterstock

Selecting the right sketchbook is a personal choice.

There are a few big considerations you need to take when buying a sketch pad.

1. The size that you like to work in. If you draw a lot, you’ll notice that there’s a scale at which you naturally sketch. Maybe it’s smaller than a quarter or you prefer to take up the entire page. Or, perhaps it’s somewhere in the middle. Take stock of this when selecting a sketchbook. If you like to draw big, make sure you pick something that can handle large art. With miniature drawings, you can opt for something much smaller in size.

2. Where will you be using this sketchbook? Another aspect to determine is where you intend to draw. For sketching at home, the size won’t matter as much—your book doesn’t have to travel. But if you intend to draw on the road, it’d be wise to select a scale that will fit comfortably in a backpack.

3. What media will you use? It’s important to decide what media you’ll use in your sketchbook because it will determine the type of paper that can best handle your art. For pencil and colored pencil, your doodles will be fine on thin 20-pound paper. Tools like watercolor paint, gouache paint, or markers are best used on thicker paper that can handle a lot of media and heavy saturation of materials.

Check out our comprehensive guide for an overview of the types of paper used for art .

Best Sketchbook for Beginners for Every Medium in 2020: Complete Reviews with Comparison

Best Sketchbook of 2018 Complete Reviews with Comparison

UPDATED for 2020

Finding the right sketchbook for you can be especially confusing when you’re a beginner and are just being introduced to the vast world of art. It can be even more confusing when you don’t understand all the terminology, specs, and different types for different uses.

In this article, we’ve simplified things. We break down the most important things you should consider before choosing the sketchbook you need.

We’ve made it even simpler for those who want to get straight to the gist with our pick below:

Editor Pick

Strathmore 350-9 300 Series Sketch Pad

This sketchbook packs quality and features with reasonable pricing. An all-rounder sketchbook like this, is perfect for beginner and aspiring artist alike.

But first, few tips:

Tips for buying your first sketchbook

Before buying your first sketchbook, you should do your research. This article tells you most of what you need to know before going off and finding your sketchbook, however, as you progress and run through a few sketchbooks, you will find that you are growing a specific preference to certain types of paper, texture, and sketchbook sizes. You may even like sketchbooks that look more like journals with hardcovers instead of the usually coiled sketchbooks.

So keep in mind that you might not enjoy your first sketchbook as much as you’d expect because even with the thorough research, some things you will only learn about your preference through trial and error. That being said, this is not always the case, in fact, your very first sketchbook could very well exceed all your expectations.

So without further ado, here are some things you may want to consider before buying your first sketchbook.

What is the right size?

Simply put, the right-sized sketchbook is one that is convenient for you. Now, from one person to another, that may vary greatly – which is exactly the point.

Some artists prefer really small sketchbooks that they can stow away in their back pockets and have them around whenever they please. This helps them create without interruption if inspiration comes on a whim.

Pocket-sized sketchbooks are perfect for rough sketches, quick on-the-go sketches, and impromptu sketches. You may even find it suitable for you if you like to make small sketches rather than big ones.

Others may prefer larger sizes, especially if they don’t intend on taking their sketches with them wherever they go. This also means that they get to make larger sketches and they will have more paper space per sheet for their imagination to run wild and for their pencils or brushes to follow.

If you’re not sure which size is for you, you can opt for a medium-sized sketchbook that both, gives you a large space to sketch while being manageable in a backpack.

Spiralbound or Hardbound?

When selecting the binding of your sketchbook, it’s going to mostly be a matter of preference. If you intend to journal-sketch, we recommend hardbound as spirals might get in the way.

Some prefers spiralbound sketchbooks, as they tend to lay flatter and they usually come with micro-perforations which makes tearing out the pages easier.

On the other hand, hardbound sketchbooks are typically safer, more durable, and you don’t risk the wire snagging on anything if you’re carrying it in a bag or a backpack.

Portrait or Landscape?

The majority of sketchbooks come in either portrait or landscape orientation, but you can occasionally find that some come in a square format.

It is a personal choice, but with purchasing a landscape format, you can sketch or paint horizontal sceneries without needing to go across the gutter.

What is the right paperweight?

To know what paper weight you need, you need to understand how paperweight affects your art. the heavier the paper, the denser it is, so this means that it’s thicker and more durable.

Thicker paper is usually cold-pressed and that would give it a slight texture, while thinner and lighter paper usually has a smoother surface. Some artists prefer a granulated feel to their sketches while others enjoy a smooth finish to theirs; paperweight affects that respectively.

While the weight affects the finish, it also affects the medium you are using – or rather, is affected by the medium you are using. Lighter weight paper is less likely to take wet mediums without bleeding through to the next pages or at least the other side of the sheet.

In addition to this, lighter weights cannot be used for watercolor drawings as it will warp when used with water or other solvents. Although you can work with lighter paper just fine, the standard weight or watercolor paper is 300 gsm. GSM stands for gram per square meter. Buying heavier weight paper allows for more versatility with your media.

However, some artists will opt for lighter paper for several reasons; one of which is the fact that they don’t intend to use solvents. Another reason would be because they pre-stretch their sheets before using watercolors so they don’t really need to have the standard weight paper for watercolors.

Lighter paper is also easier to carry around, which may not seem like a big deal until you’re lugging around a 150-sheet sketchbook that is starting to feel like a rock.

Speaking of paper, we have an in-depth article on choosing the right paper for your sketchbook (specifically for watercolor use but the similar principals apply to other medium too).

Best Sketchbook for Beginner Reviews

1. canson xl series watercolor textured paper pad.

Canson XL Series Watercolor Textured Paper Pad for Paint, Pencil, Ink, Charcoal, Pastel, and Acrylic, Fold Over, 140 Pound, 9x12 Inch, , 30 Sheets

  • Manufactured using sustainable processes
  • Fold over bound with a cold press texture
  • The durable surface stands up to repeated washes

Canson has always led the market when it comes to providing beginner and intermediate artists with suitable sketchbooks for their creations. The XL Watercolor Series does not fall short.

The Canson sketchbook features an innovative cover that folds over in a way that keeps the sketchbook sheets intact, without any bends or dents. It contains 30 cold-pressed textured sheets made out of recycled materials in a sustainable manner that maintains the environment while providing excellent quality. The whole sketchbook is free of acid, chlorine, and lignin.

The textured side of the sheets is ideal for wet mediums while the back side features a smooth surface ideal for dry mediums; like graphite and colored pencils.

The paperweight for the Canson XL is the watercolor standard at 300 gsm. The thick nature of these sheets allows the artist to use a variety of techniques while sketching; the sheets will withstand several washes, meaning that you can layer up both wet and dry mediums.

  • Withstands multiple washes, erasing, rubbing, and scrapping
  • Differently textured sides make it suitable for a wider range of mediums
  • Acid-free paper will preserve your sketches longer
  • The rather large size of the XL series may not be an inconvenience to artists that prefer more compact sizes

2. Strathmore 400 Series Sketch Pad

This sketchbook from Strathmore features one of the best paper qualities on the list. This sketch pad includes 100 sheets finely perforated at the side to be easily torn out without any damage to your sketches. The sheets are also true to their size, meaning that the perforated part is not included in the size description and when you tear a page out, it will be the same size mentioned on the sketchbook’s cover regardless of the torn part.

The sketchbook has double spiral binding at the side to ensure durability as well as add to the aesthetic of the sketchbook. And to make things easier for you, the artist, Strathmore added a heavy-duty chipboard backing to the sketchbook to be used as a firm surface to draw on wherever you go.

The acid-free paper preserves your work for a longer time, while the fine tooth surface of these papers allows you to work with several dry mediums. The 400 series Sketch Pad is perfect for graphite or colored pencils, sketching sticks, charcoal, soft pastels, and more. It takes ink pretty well and pens will rarely bleed through to the other side of the sheets, however, markers do bleed through, sometimes several pages due to the light paperweight of 89 gsm.

  • Fine tooth surface allows for experimentations with several dry media, textures, and styles
  • Chipboard backing allows you to draw on-the-go
  • Sheets are true to their size when torn out
  • Can barely use any markers I this sketchbook as they will bleed through

3. Pentalic Sketch Book

Pentalic Sketch Book, Hardbound, 8-1/2-Inch by 11-Inch

  • Hardbound textured black embossed cover
  • Perfect for all dry media
  • Classic sketch book

The Pentalic hardbound sketchbook features a black beautifully-embossed hardcover with a leatherette texture to protect the sheets inside. When you open the sketchbook, the cover provides a firm surface while the spine allows you to lay the sheets completely flat for optimum convenience when sketching, drawing, or writing.

The sketchbook includes 110 sheets that can be used on either side and are excellent for dry media, making it perfect for more than just sketching. You can use several different mediums on these sheets without worrying about paper damage; however, the sheets will warp if you use them with wet mediums.

So the sketchbook will sustain graphite and colored pencils, pastels, charcoal, and more dry mediums due to the fact that the paperweight is heavy in nature; weighing 114 gsm.

The binding on this sketchbook is sturdy enough to keep the sheets from moving around while drawing so you won’t have to worry about smudges or smearing due to the sheets moving under your hand. The sheets themselves are also sturdy enough to minimize pencil marks and impressions on the next page.

  • The sturdy binding will stop sheets from moving around, so it reduces smudging
  • The spine lays completely flat when open allowing for two-paged sketches and drawings
  • The hardcover provides a firm surface underneath the sheets to draw on
  • The sketchbook will not sustain wet mediums or alcohol-based markers

4. Artist’s Choice Sketch

Artist's Choice Sketch Pad,75 Sheets, Pack of 2

  • Buy One Get One Free - 2 Pack of 75 Page Sketch Pads. 50% More than the Competition!
  • High Quality 60lb (90gsms) Paper - 100% Acid-Free and Neutral PH. Perfectly Textured for a Smooth Non-Reflective Finish
  • Durable Spiral Binding - Each Page has a Perforated Edging for Easy Tearing. Ideal for Framing or Presenting!

Like the previous Strathmore 400 series, this sketch pad has double-loop binding at the side that adds to the binding’s durability without making it bulky. On the binging side, the sheets have a perforated line that makes it very easy to tear out clean pages without having to worry about tears from the binding loops.

In the sketchbook is included 75 high-quality sheets, all with a finely textured tooth surface so that your sketches can have a beautiful, smooth, and non-reflective finish. And like most sketchbooks on this list, this one’s pages are also completely acid-free so that your art can last longer without fading away.

This sketchbook also has a durable board backing at the end of it to make drawing convenient at any place or time. And again due to the light paper weight of the sheets in this sketchbook, at only 90 gsm, this sketchbook is suitable for dry media but can barely take on any solvents or wet media.

The nature of these sheets makes them usable, however, as more than just a sketchbook. You will find it convenient to journal, write, or test colors in this sketchbook.

  • Perforated lines aid in clean sheet tears every time
  • Multi-purpose and can be used for many tasks aside drawing and sketching
  • Finely textured tooth surface give a non-reflective finish to your drawings
  • The sheets are not that durable due to their light weight and in addition to not taking wet media, it will wear out fast with multiple erasures

  • Create beautiful works of art with this watercolor paper

Using watercolor pencils with this sketch pad produces the most beautiful results.

Another great use would be for brush lettering, where the water will not spread or wrinkle the page for the most precise results.

It includes 15 cold-pressed sheets that have a slight texture that compliments your art. At an adequate size, the Strathmore 25-111 has a size of 9 x 12 inches that is both spacious yet handy and is easily packable so that you can have your sketchbook on you wherever you go.

7. Leda Art Supply The Perfect Premium Medium Sketch Book

The sketchbook also has an elastic band that can secure your sketchbook in a closed position or can hold down the pages in an open position. This, in addition to the fact that this sketchbook can lay completely flat when it’s open, makes it the most convenient to use amongst artists.

The Leda includes 160 smooth pages that work well with dry mediums, fine-tip markers, as well as light watercolor washes. If you intend to use large tip markers, however, you should know that they may bleed to the other side of your sheet. Other than that, you will find that the pages in this sketchbook rarely ever bleed, even with ink.

The thread-bound pages in this sketchbook are cream-colored, giving your sketchbook and authentic feel while accentuating your art’s colors and shades. The Leda also weighs a lot less than more bulky sketchbooks due to the light and flexible cover as well as the 130 gsm of paperweight.

  • Part of the proceeds from purchasing a Leda sketchbook will go to charity
  • Pages are smooth and cream-colored to accentuate drawings
  • PU leather cover provides protection to your sketchbook without making it bulky or heavy
  • Large tip markers may bleed through papers without a sacrificial sheet in between pages

8. Strathmore 400 Series Colored Pencil Pad

Strathmore Colored Pencil Spiral Paper Pad 9'X12'-30 Sheets -62477900

  • Excellent for use with colored pencil; great for graphite, charcoal, and sketching sticks
  • Smooth, even coverage can be achieved, and the durable surface stands up to repeated erasures and reworking
  • Micro-perforated wire bound sheets

Like all Strathmore sketchbooks, the 400 Series sketchbook made for colored pencils is of exquisite quality. The 30 crisp-white sheets in the sketchbook have a fine-tooth surface for a beautifully added texture for your drawings. On the other side of each sheet is a smoother white surface so that the sketchbook can suit your style preference whichever way.

The sheets are perfectly suitable for dry mediums, but especially colored pencils since it’s made for that. The sketchbook has a paperweight of 163 gsm making it extra thick for dry mediums. This means that you don’t have to worry about the durability of these sheets; they can withstand multiple erasures and layers.

The sketchbook is wire-bound at the side, making it really convenient to turn the pages all the way around to tuck it back under the sketchbook providing an extra firm surface to draw, sketch, and color on. The wire also makes it super easy to tear out the pages without having to worry about uneven tears.

This sketchbook is also true to its size when torn out; the wire perforations are not included in the size description.

  • Double sided with different textured surfaces to suit different coloring styles
  • Wire-bound, making it much more convenient to turn pages and handle the sketchbook when sketching
  • Durable sheets can withstand layering and multiple erasures
  • Due to the light paper weight of the sketchbook, blending colors with water, alcohol, or other solvents will cause the papers to warp and crinkle

9. Strathmore 350-9 300 Series Sketch Pad

Strathmore 300 Series Sketch Paper Pad, Top Wire Bound, 9x12 inches, 100 Sheets (50lb/74g) - Artist Sketchbook for Adults and Students - Graphite, Charcoal, Pencil, Colored Pencil

  • Best used for graphite pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, sketching stick
  • Lightweight sketch paper with a fine tooth surface

Another Strathmore sketchbook with impeccable quality, this sketchbook has a paperweight of 74 gsm making it perfect for quick pencil sketches. The sketchbook has fine tooth, lightly textured sheets that make for more pronounced sketches.

The whole sketchbook is very lightweight despite the fact that it carries 100 bright white sheets inside. In addition to that, you can buy a wire-bound sketchbook or opt for the glue-bound one. Either way, the papers are easily torn out – whether through the finely perforated lines at the top of the wire-bound version or by simply peeling the sheet straight out of the glue-bound version.

In both versions, the sheets are true to their size, so tearing a page out will not take away from its dimensions.

Due to the fact that the sheets are lightweight and durable at the same time, this sketchbook can be used for several arts in addition to drawing or sketching. You can simply tear pages out and create 3D paper art out of the sheets.

And like the previous versions, this sketchbook also has a heavy clipboard backing that makes drawing and sketching convenient anywhere you go. The sheets are also acid-free so this sketchbook preserves your drawing too.

  • Lightweight makes it easy to take anywhere
  • Clipboard backing makes it convenient to sketch in your sketchbook regardless of where you are
  • Unlike previous models, it has many sheets for experimentation and rough sketches
  • Not suitable for wet media

Essentially, the sketchbook you choose has more to do with your preferences than with the hype around each sketchbook. First and foremost, you should consider what medium you will be using in your sketchbook. And from there, consider the size, paperweight, and aesthetics of each compatible sketchbook.

You should also keep in mind the drawbacks of each sketchbook and contemplate whether or not it would inconvenience you while creating your art. Your comfort during use will determine much of the quality of the sketches you produce; if a sketchbook is uncomfortable or if it bothers you during use, it would take away from your ability to create beautiful art.

Autodesk SketchBook Pro review

Digital painting and sketching comes to the mac app store at a great price, but is it for everyone.

SketchBook Pro

TechRadar Verdict

A unique, powerful and fun painting tool. Highly intuitive and also inexpensive; recommended for all

Incredible UI

Highly customisable

Great brushes

Easy to use and get into

Sluggish on slower Macs

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

There are many apps that enable you to create digital pieces of art. There are the big expensive apps, such as Photoshop and Painter, as well a raft of less expensive tools such as Pixelmator and ArtRage.

Autodesk's SketchBook Pro is a similar proposition to ArtRage, being an app geared to enabling you to get painting and sketching quickly. Don't be fooled by the name – this is not just pencil/pen and ink, it's a fully fledged art studio, with a huge range of natural-media painting tools.

The first thing you notice is the simple interface. In fact, its simplicity and uniqueness is a little intimidating at first. But after a while, it becomes intuitive – to the point you forget it's there. Of course it's customisable to your workflow, so you can tailor it to your exact needs or preference.

On launch, you're presented with a simple toolbar running horizontally across the top of the interface, along with another curved toolbar bottom left. The top bar enables you to toggle functions on and off – such as the Brush palette, colour picker and layers, as well as pick shapes to draw and control guides and rulers.

The curved toolbar, however, is more interesting – and it's here you see where you really benefit from a graphics tablet.

In fact, you may as well turn the top toolbar off, because everything is accessible from the bottom bar. The way you use this toolbar soon becomes second nature when painting in the app. By clicking and holding on a tool, a number of options appear, then you select which one you want by dragging your stylus over to it.

For instance, by clicking and holding on the brush tool, you can quickly swap between Pencil, Airbrush, Paintbrush or other drawing tools. You can also open the Brushes palette for more control.

At the very left of the curved toolbar, you can reposition it or flick between different interface views. Similarly, you can jump between colours, layers and other tools. It's effective and a joy to use. You can also undo and redo using the red and green arrows.

Another great UI element is the Brush properties control. This small, circular dial sits anywhere you like on your canvas. By clicking and dragging on this you can quickly change the size and angle of your brush – a brush preview appearing on the canvas as you do so. To appreciate the control that this offers, you'll want to be using a Wacom.

All of this, along with fact that tools can be accessed in so many different ways with different ways of controlling and tweaking them, makes this one of the best UIs out there – a true masterclass in catering for the needs of its users without getting in the way.

The painting tools themselves are superb with an excellent sense of realism. Along with layer blending modes, this is a great app for getting quick ideas down, as well as creating full-on digital paintings. You can create your own custom brushes and sets.

One thing – if you're creating large, complicated pieces, you will need a fast machine. Some of the more complex brushes, when using multiple layers and blending modes, can crawl a bit on older machines.

There's no real limit to what you can do with SketchBook Pro. If you've got the talent, it will fit around you. When it debuted on the Mac App Store it was a steal at £18. Now £45, it's still a bargain.

However, there's a free Express version on the Mac App Store – with a limit of three layers, a stop on how big you can make images and minus the ability to create custom brushes.

The Best Watercolour Sketchbooks: A Review

The best watercolour sketchbooks for artists—a review of five different sketchbooks from some top quality brands.

There’s nothing better than a good watercolour sketchbook, with blank white pages ready to be covered in paint. The possibilities are endless, sketchbooks are an artists’ free space, where they can create in total privacy without judgement. In a sketchbook, you don’t need to worry about making mistakes, because that’s what they’re all about, practising and improving.

First it’s important to understand what makes a quality sketchbook, so you know what you’re looking for. In the product review I’ll go over the features of each sketchbook so you can choose what will suit you best.

Best watercolour sketchbooks: reviewed

Moleskine watercolour album.

Buy it here

Attributes: cotton blend, cold press, ivory white paper, 200gsm, 30 sheets

This sketchbook comes in several different sizes including A3, A4, large and pocket. It is presented as a sleek black thread bound book with a faux leather feel and elastic closure.

It has inner storage compartments for you to keep loose sheets or references. The paper colour is an ivory white and is fairly thick at 200gsm.

On this weight of paper, I wouldn’t go overboard with the washes, but it will be able to take some water. The paper is cold-pressed so it has a slight texture to it.

With this journal, you could fold it out flat and paint a double page spread for a panoramic effect.

Strathmore Visual Journal

Strathmore Visual Journal - 12'' x 9'', 140 lb, Watercolor

Attributes: 22 sheets, cold press, natural white, 300gsm, spiral bound

Strathmore’s Visual Journal is made from 22 pages of high quality, thick cold-pressed paper that has a wonderful, smooth texture. This journal is aimed at the intermediate artist, due to the quality of the paper, but a beginner and equally a professional artist would get lots of enjoyment out of it too.

There are two size options, and two paper thickness options. Strathmore offers a 300gsm watercolour journal, which is heavy! It will be able to take even watercolour washes without buckling or pilling. Because the paper is so thick, you would be able to paint on both sides of the page.

Remove the flysheet to reveal the decorative cover beneath. The cover is hard enough to comfortably rest on whilst painting and the spiral binding means you can open it to 360°.

Hahnemuhle Watercolour Book

Buy it here .

Attributes: fine grain, portrait format, 200gsm, 30 sheets, natural white, cellulose

The Hahnemuhle watercolour book is made from 200gsm natural white, acid-free paper that has a finer texture compared to some of the other journals.

The cover of the journal has a canvas effect and an elastic to keep it secured shut.

Etchr Everyday Sketchbook

sketchbook review

Attributes: 100% cotton, cold press, vegan, 230gsm, 26 sheets, hardbound

This book is made for mixed media, but works like a dream with watercolour. The acid-free paper is made from cotton and is cold pressed, meaning it has a slight texture. It has a customisable cover and lies completely flat, making it comfortable to work on.

At 230gsm the paper is thicker than some others on the list and you can paint on each side of the page. If you like to use mixed media, the sketchbook can be used with ink, acrylic and gouache too. The book comes in three sizes, A6, A5 and A4.

This paper works wonderfully with a variety of watercolour techniques, such as wet-on-wet, glazing and lifting.

Colours look brilliantly vibrant on Etchr paper.

Stillman and Birn Beta Series

Attributes: 270gsm, 26 pages, sewn binding, cellulose, 8×10”, cold press

This archival quality paper is heavyweight but suits lighter washes rather than wet on wet techniques.

Its beautiful navy softcover feels luxurious—paint in it with watercolour, gouache, ink or graphite.

What makes a great sketchbook?

Paper weight.

Thick paper is the most essential feature. Water can make paper buckle, so ensure you look for sketchbooks that have a paper weight of 200gsm or more. If you get a sketchbook with thin pages, the paper will start to warp, buckle, pill and even fall apart with washes of water.

Paper fibre: why acid-free, cotton paper is best

Another thing to consider is the type of paper you are getting. It’s always important to look for acid-free paper as this is archival and professional quality. Acid-free paper doesn’t yellow over time. Paper with cotton in it is far more stable than paper made from cellulose. Cellulose sketchbooks are cheaper and many brands make their sketchbooks with a mixture of cotton and wood pulp.

To prevent paint from being absorbed straight into the paper fibres, manufacturers size their paper. Paper is commonly sized with gelatin which stops the paint from sinking in, giving a vibrant appearance. If you don’t use animal products, Etchr makes a wonderful vegan friendly sketchbook.

Hot pressed, cold pressed or rough?

best watercolour sketchbook: hot pressed

Hot pressed, cold pressed and rough simply describes the way in which the paper has been treated. This is important to know about because it can affect the finished appearance of a painting.

Hot pressed paper is the smoothest, and is therefore for artists who love painting in delicate, fine details. This type of paper is best for lifting techniques as it is the least absorbent.

Cold pressed paper has a slight surface texture where very fine details may be obscured, however it’s much better at taking watery washes as it is more absorbent.

Rough paper is the most absorbent, so is the best for techniques like heavy washes and glazing.

Portability

No two artists are the same, and neither is the way they use their sketchbook. One artist might need a pocket sized book they can carry around with them to make quick sketches, another might want a bigger book to plan colour schemes, compositions and drawings before transferring to a final piece of paper.

A compact sketchbook will be more portable— a great feature for those who don’t want it to take up much space in their bag. However, if you’re a student, you may want a slightly larger sketchbook that gives adequate space to document your workflow and process.

Sketchbook tips

sketchbook review

You may have chosen your perfect sketchbook already and now want some tips on how to keep your watercolour journal looking its best.

The journals on this list generally have thick paper, but to prevent the paper from warping under wet on wet techniques, slide a piece of card beneath the page and secure it in place with a bulldog clip . This also prevents any paint from splashing on pages beneath.

To neaten up a painting in a journal, you could choose to mask around the edges. Get some painter’s masking tape and neatly line up the tape so it runs along each edge. Then paint over it and remove the tape when you’re done to create a white border. You’ll want to get masking tape with low tack, to prevent it from tearing your journal paper. Sometimes even low tack masking tape doesn’t want to come away without taking some of the paper with it. Resolve this by pointing a hairdryer on a low heat setting at the masking tape from a few inches away. Gently heat the tape until the adhesive relaxes. You should be able to peel the tape away with ease.

If you like to paint on the go, or outdoors, get some supplies that are easy to carry with you. These watercolour brushes store water in the handle, the water glides out as you paint.

Watercolour pencils are also a great option for sketchbook work. Choose to use them dry and paint over them with some water or dip the nibs in water for a saturated effect.

Stillman and Birn Nova Series

ETCHR Mixed Media Sketchbook

Who hasn’t felt like a kid in a candy store when walking into an art shop? We all know the feeling of wanting it all but kinda not knowing what to get.

That’s the case for many artists, however, mixed media artists have a more difficult time when looking for reliable paper and sketchbooks that can handle dry, wet, and oily mediums without tearing or bleeding through, and since art supplies are much more expensive than candy, we can’t just get them all and try which ones we like the best.

But don’t worry, we got you! In this guide, we’ll learn how to differentiate a good sketchbook from the rest and which qualities to look for when shopping for sketchbooks. We’ll also present you with a handpicked list of what we believe are the best sketchbooks in the market for mixed media art, that will handle anything you throw them and resist through all the layers you use.

Let’s get started!

What to Look for in a Mixed Media Sketchbook

Paper quality.

sketchbook review

Durable paper is also a must, this doesn’t always mean weight but material. For example, a thinner rag cotton paper will hold up better and resist more than 300gsm cellulose paper which will tear relatively easily when using multiple layers of paint markers.

If you’re doing professional work or you’re planning on having your work exhibited or even want something extra durable, look for archival paper, which will hold the integrity of the colors much better and will last for over a century.

Weight and Texture

While weight doesn’t really define the quality of a paper it does hold a lot of importance as most of us already know. Still, what range of paper weight is good enough for mixed media? When is it too much? When is it too little? Well, here’s a little guide on which paper might be the best for you according to your techniques and the type of art you do.

Heavier Weight (140 lb / 300 gsm and Above):

  • Ideal for wet media like watercolors, gouache, and acrylics.
  • Can handle multiple layers and heavier applications of paint.
  • Less likely to warp or buckle under wet conditions.

sketchbook review

Medium Weight (90-140 lb / 200-300 gsm):

  • Versatile for both dry and light wet media.
  • Good for layering lighter washes of paint without heavy soaking.
  • Can handle a moderate amount of water and mediums like light washes, inks, and markers.
  • A good all-around choice for those who use a mix of mediums but don’t heavily saturate the paper.

Lighter Weight (Under 90 lb / 200 gsm):

  • Better suited for dry media or very light washes.
  • Not recommended for heavy or wet applications as it may buckle or deteriorate.

The texture of the paper is also important since it will influence the techniques you use immensely. For example, smooth paper is not the best for expressive strokes but it’s amazing for soft traces and intricate details. Textured paper might not be the best for botanical painting or detailed lettering, but it’s great to use multiple techniques on and it handles well any medium.

Size and Format

Large Sizes (A3, 11×14 +inches) are best for artists who work on a large scale, need more space for details, or prefer making larger compositions. This format is ideal for studio work, or for those who often exhibit or sell their work. Medium Sizes (A4, 9×12 inches) offer a balance between space and portability. Good for artists who enjoy a fair amount of detail without the need for a large canvas. These sketchbooks are great for both studio and outdoor settings. Small Sizes (A5, 5×7 inches) are the best for artists who travel a lot, enjoy urban sketching, or like to capture quick ideas. These sketchbooks are the favorite of many and are often used as daily journals, or to make quick studies.

Now let’s talk format. Landscape Formats are usually the pick of landscape artists or those who prefer a wider field for their compositions, while Portrait Formats , as their name says are great for portraits, but also a good option for beginners who want to explore and make studies without compromising space or limiting composition.

sketchbook review

Thread-bound sketchbooks ’ pages are sewn tightly, which ensures the pages stay in their place, but also makes it slightly hard to “break” the binding and make the sketchbook lie flat, especially if it has many pages

Glued Sketchbooks are great for those who want to rip a page off after finishing it, be it for a commission or to frame their work. They can lie fully flat which is an advantage, but the pages tend to come loose easily.

There are sketchbooks for every budget, from very cheap and easy-to-get options to very expensive, premium, and hand-made options. Deciding which one to get might be tough, especially for beginners, however, my honest advice is to start down and in the middle. Get a cheap sketchbook and use the hell out of it. Use it, abuse it, and experiment all you want. Then get a mildly expensive one, and once you’ve mastered an ability, make something on that one as a “proof” of your learning journey. That’s a good way to lose the fear of sketchbook blank pages. Once you’ve filled a couple of sketchbooks you’ll feel ready enough to try fancier stuff, plus you’ll have enough experience with texture, tone, and weight to be able to choose your own.

About the Strathmore Visual Journal 500 Series

The Strathmore 500 Series has some of the best sketchbooks for all artists, however, the 500 Series Visual Journal has a special place in the hearts and shelves of many artists. Strathmore is one of the few brands that offer good quality paper for a fair price, along with several different presentations, formats, and colors; and this sketchbook is not an exception.

This journal features 100% cotton vellum paper, making it great for drawing, inking, painting, markers, and watercolor. The spiral binding is strong and durable and it makes it easy for the sketchbook to lie flat, additionally, it has more than enough pages for you to work on and th price makes it incredibly accessible for being 100% cotton paper.

  • Durable paper quality.
  • Versatile mixed-media support.
  • Convenient size options.
  • Slight warping issues.
  • Relatively higher price.

2. Best Mixed Media Sketchbooks Overall — Stillman & Birn Sketchbooks (Nova Series)

sketchbook review

About the Stillman and Birn Nova Series

Coming strong into the market, the Stillman and Birn Sketchbooks are one of the top cellulose sketchbooks in the market. Thanks to the wide variety in presentation, color, weight, texture, and format, these sketchbooks are the go-to choice of many artists. The toned series is no exception. These beautifully toned sketchbooks are great for mediums like coloring pencils, tinted charcoal, gouache, paint markers, acrylics, etc. They handle wet media beautifully despite being made with cellulose paper and are another affordable option for artists looking to experiment and try different papers and techniques.

  • Excellent toned paper.
  • High-quality construction.
  • Ideal for various media.
  • Limited size options.
  • Premium price range.

3. Best Premium Sketchbook for Professionals Artists  — ETCHR Mixed Media Sketchbook

sketchbook review

About the ETCHR Mixed Media Sketchbook

The ETCHR Sketchbooks are one of the best alternatives for professional artists today, they offer some of the best acid-free 100% cotton archival paper, bound by a beautiful hardcover made of white cotton fibers that you can also customize.

The insanely popular ETCHR Sketchbooks took over the internet and the art community a few years ago, due to their high quality, beautiful cover and aesthetics, and amazing texture. Well, they’re still as great as ever, however, the price is still very much on the expensive side.

If what you’re looking for is an archival sketchbook to hold your work or portfolio then don’t hold back and go for it, however, If you often go through sketchbooks quickly for practice rather than keeping them for your work, buying multiple units of this sketchbook will end up costing you a small fortune.

  • Premium paper texture.
  • Exceptional build quality.
  • Professional artist’s choice.
  • Higher price point.
  • Heavier weight may limit portability.

4. Best Large Sketchbook for Mixed Media — Winsor and Newton Professional Mixed Media Pad

sketchbook review

About the Winsor and Newton Professional Mixed Media Pad

Winsor and Newton is a well-established brand in the world of art supplies, known for their high-quality oil and watercolor paints, and their high-quality paper. This Professional Mixed Media Pad is no different, it’s acid-free, made of 100% cotton, and has a nice texture, smooth enough for pencil and inkwork but textured enough for wet media and watercolors.

The size is great for artists who like to work on large formats, the spiral binding allows you to work on either portrait or landscape format, and the micro-perforations help you remove pages with ease. The price is affordable enough, and it has a good amount of pages but not so much that it’ll overwhelm you.

  • Large sketching surface.
  • Professional-grade paper.
  • Minimal warping issues.
  • Higher price tag.
  • Slightly heavyweight.

5. Best Budget Sketchbook for Mixed Media — Canson XL Series Mixed Media.

sketchbook review

About the Canson XL Mixed Media

The Canson XL Mixed Media Sketchbook is one of the few sketchbooks that offer great quality for a low price. This sketchbook is made of acid-free cellulose paper, however, it withstands pretty much every medium and it has a uniform, smooth texture that fits dry and wet media with ease.

Another advantage of the Canson XL is its size and portability, available in several sizes, it is convenient for artists on the go, fitting easily into a bag or backpack. The spiral binding allows it to lay flat when open and makes it easy to turn pages but it’s not as easy to work across two pages simultaneously.

The paper’s weight is also a key factor. While not as heavy as some premium options, it is thick enough to prevent most mediums from bleeding through, making it an excellent choice for artists who like to utilize both sides of the paper.

  • Budget-friendly option.
  • Decent paper quality.
  • Variety of size options.
  • Prone to warping.
  • Not as durable.

Educational Value

Kids can learn to create digital art using this professional-grade app. With some instruction and exploration, tweens and teens will learn through experience and develop their unique artist's style as they experiment with the different tools, colors, brushes, and strokes. The Sketchbook.com site, accessible via the app, includes tips and tutorials to extend learning. Sketchbook Pro gives kids easy access to professional tools for creating digital art.

Ease of Play

Kids familiar with the desktop version of Sketchbook Pro will pick up the tablet version with no problems. Others will need direct instruction or careful review of the tutorial instructions to fully utilize all of the tools Sketchbook Pro offers.

Parents need to know that Sketchbook Pro is a professional-level digital sketching tool for serious digital artists. Parents may want to start tweens and teens with Sketchbook Express , the free version of the app, to get a feel for some of the features, then upgrade to the pro version for more layers, brushes, and canvas sizes. The free version will suffice for many, but for teens who are serious about art, it's worth the upgrade. Tweens will need instruction to fully utilize the app. It's possible that some younger kids will enjoy the app, but there are many choices that are more targeted at their age and skill level. Teens can share their creations over email or social media. For kids using phones instead of tablets, there's a version of the app called Sketchbook Mobile .

What’s It About?

SKETCHBOOK PRO is a fully featured app with an arsenal of tools for creating digital art. Kids can choose brushes and colors, draw using mirror image, move and rotate and arrange objects, and work with layers. They can choose the resolution size to save creations. Teens can store works-in-progress and complete them later as well export their works (including PSD export) or share them over email or social media. There are some differences in features across platforms; for example, the iOS version of the app has a smudge tool while the Android version does not at the time of the review.

Is It Any Good?

Sketchbook Pro is a serious digital art tool not to be mistaken for the many simple drawing apps available. It is an excellent, professional-caliber tool designed by Autodesk, developers with a history of well-regarded apps for designers, engineers, and architects. The app offers tools available in the desktop version with the ease of a sketchbook on the tablet.

Teens familiar with the desktop version of Sketchbook Pro will pick up the tablet version with no problems, but others will require some instruction and exploration to get comfortable. The controls are exhaustive and intuitive, and maneuvering with both fingers and a stylus offers some ease in creation. The app does offer an option for pen only, which lets artists use the stylus without hand pressure registering on the screen, so teens can draw with precision. The options for tools, pens, and stamps are outstanding. Teens can pin their most-used tools to their canvas and reset them easily in the settings, making pinning tools for specific projects easy. It would be nice to see a few improvements (such as a select tool, and for the Android version, a smudge tool), but all in all, it's an excellent tool. Sketchbook Pro includes more tools than Procreate , another professional-level creation app, though not as many options for canvas-size and resolution.

PROS: Photoshop and Illustrator might quickly come to mind when the words "design software" are mentioned. However, I think that the world of design is not just limited to Adobe tools. This is why I often try to evangelize designers on the perks of Sketchbook. This is best for those who have had ample training in drawing in pen and paper. If this sounds like you, then I think that Sketchbook is worth exploring. It has tools that mimic actual drawing materials. It offers templates and vectors to facilitate faster and more accurate drawings as well. This is basically like drawing on pen and paper, but only cleaner and with better scale and fit. The "French curves," in particular, are great for creating curved lines. This is like assisted drawing on a digital canvas. There's also what the program calls the "perspective grids" for cityscapes and the like.

CONS: Sketchbook's strength lies in drawing, and so I'm afraid that it lacks support in other aspects. The color grading is not at the level that I need it to be. It becomes necessary then to switch to other solutions after using the drawing board.

The least favorable review

PROS: Sketchbook mixes both play and work. I love how it gives me access to an impressive slew of tools that I can use to hone and improve my craft. I've completed quite a number of creative projects using this. Not to mention, it's accessible too. I can use this on my desktop, laptop, tablet, or even my phone.

CONS: I don't have any major issues with its functions. However, I do wish that it would give me the freedom to adjust my canvas without asking for an extra payment. It would be nice to have more brush options too.

Design thru phone now made easier

PROS: Sketchbook has everything a designer needs, with a wide array of templates we can use for different specific projects. I can also work with ease through my mobile or tablet.

CONS: Accessing all its features such as widening the canvas, among others, can be quite costly.

What do you think about this review?

My most reliable sketchbook anywhere I go

PROS: Whenever an idea pops, Sketchbook helps me enhance my ideas into something better than what I initially had in mind. I owe much of this to the set of tools it offers, the most complete I have seen in any software so far.

CONS: Just not keen on paying to optimize the experience with tools since I'm already satisfied with what is offered for free.

Better and easier than Photoshop

PROS: Sketchbook definitely surpasses Photoshop with its wide ranging tools that are easy to use. They're intuitive even to the first-time user.

CONS: I'm really happy with everything about it but I'm just curious why they require me to make another account when I already gave them my Apple ID.

Helps us detail client’s expectations

PROS: Drawing on paper is as easy as drawing on Sketchbook. Not to mention that you're given the full arsenal of resources for creativity with Sketchbook having every tool you need as an illustrator.

CONS: Hope it could expand the types of files it recognizes as it is a tedious task to convert art files into something that is workable in Sketchbook.

Perfect for an on-the-go artist like me.

PROS: I love how I can carry this app with me anywhere I go. I can easily draw/doodle at any time of the day--during my commute, while waiting for my coffee, or when I'm on my break. There's a wide range of brush tips available here too. I'm having the time of my life exploring each one of these brushes.

CONS: The prices can add up for getting more brushes. If I wanted a bigger canvas, I'd need to pay extra too.

It gives me the freedom to express myself through the arts.

PROS: I am a big fan of Sketchbook. This is a platform where I can absolutely let my creativity run loose. There is no limit to what I can draw and dream up. It offers the best blank canvas that any artist can ask for, and each stroke can be scaled to the right dimension too. What more can I ask for? I can easily zoom in on an area that I'm working on. This makes sure that the result is of the utmost accuracy. Other than the ability to properly visualize my work-in-progress, I can make headway in my tasks quickly too. This is thanks to the features included here that encourage efficiency. I have been able to produce precise drawings in no time thanks to Sketchbook.

CONS: I can't say that I'm a novice when it comes to drawing and design, but Sketchbook made me feel frustrated about these skills at the start. I had a hard time understanding and perfecting my strokes. It's not easy to import and export media files here as well. But as with anything, I got to know this program in time, and I now know its environment like the back of my hand.

A tool for artists.

PROS: Sketchbook lets me flex my creativity muscles without the use of paper. Not only is this environmentally helpful, but it also allows me to switch brush tips quite easily. I've been enjoying experimenting with various strokes.

CONS: My saved files on Sketchbook can't be imported on Adobe Photoshop. I usually have to take a screenshot and take a stab at editing it on Illustrator instead.

Digitalizes my drawings.

PROS: Drawing in this program is the best! I’ve been able to explore the layers here—and properly organize each one too! I’ve been able to save each of my layers in different folders for easy tracking and moving around. The community of users is pretty enthusiastic about this too. They have published a lot of YouTube resources on the matter. If I were to choose a favorite tool, I’d probably choose the transformation tool—but, really, there are plenty of brush tools to choose from here.

CONS: There are some glitches in the system, for example, the lines. However, this minor issue quickly corrects itself.

This is where I let my creativity take flight.

Perfect for the first two steps in design: drawing and conceptualizing.

PROS: I love how intuitive this program is. It helps me get the job done quickly and easily. The features included here are well thought-out too. I'm a much better artist, and with exponentially better output, thanks to its tools and tracing features. I can use it on just about any device too.

CONS: It is almost impossible for my layers to be superimposed. This is such a shame because this feature is something that I often need. There's also a lack of resources available online that would teach me more about Sketchbook.

This is every designer’s best friend.

An economical choice.

PROS: Sketchbook is a digital sketchbook--this is what it is. It is basically a tool for drawing and doodling, but without the use of a physical pen and paper. This is my drawing board. I simply hook up my drawing pad to my laptop, and I let my creativity soar. I love how much control I have when drawing here. It translates my brush stroke well, and it even has a hand stabilizer. It has made me a much better artist.

CONS: First of all, there aren't many resources and tutorials about Sketchbook yet. This is probably because not a lot of designers know about this robust tool yet. Some filters are also missing, and I find myself often switching to Adobe tools to accomplish this.

Encourages creativity.

PROS: I’m still getting to know the ins and outs of this program. So far, I’ve discovered some really great features in its toolbox. These tools are great because they work to enhance rather than overpower our creative visions and designs. I particularly like how straightforward the environment is. Everything is just within reach. The mirror tool is my favorite, so far.

CONS: It would be nice if there would be more tutorials available to users. Some users have taken it upon themselves to add how-to guides, but it would be nice if this came directly from the developers themselves.

Best Sketchbooks for Colored Pencils: A Guide

What makes a sketchbook great for colored pencils, how to choose the right sketchbook, sketchbook review: strathmore series, sketchbook review: moleskine art collection, sketchbook review: canson mixed media, sketchbook review: pentalic hardbound, sketchbook review: illo premium, how to care for your sketchbook.

For artists, both budding and seasoned, finding the best sketchbook for colored pencils can feel like a quest. It's not easy! You might feel like Goldilocks, trying out one sketchbook after another—this one's too smooth, that one's too rough, and oh, this one's just right. But fear not! This guide will help you navigate the colorful sea of sketchbooks and find the perfect match for your colored pencils.

There's more to a good sketchbook than meets the eye. Let's break down what makes the best sketchbook for colored pencils:

  • Paper weight: The weight of the paper can make or break your artwork. Heavier paper, typically 60-90 lbs, is best for colored pencils. It can handle the pressure you put on it without tearing or bleeding through.
  • Texture: The texture of the paper plays a key role in how your colored pencils interact with the surface. A slight texture, or "tooth", can help grab onto the color, allowing for richer and more vibrant drawings.
  • Binding: Spiral bindings let you lay your sketchbook flat while you work, while hardbound sketchbooks offer a sturdy, flat surface. Your choice depends on your personal preference and working style.
  • Size: Sketchbooks come in all shapes and sizes, from pocket-sized for on-the-go sketching to larger formats for more detailed work. Think about where and how you'll be using your sketchbook before deciding on a size.
  • Quality: High-quality paper won't fade or yellow over time, keeping your artwork vibrant for years to come. Look for acid-free paper to ensure longevity.

Remember, the best sketchbook for colored pencils is the one that meets your specific needs and preferences. Whether you're an aspiring artist or a seasoned pro, the right sketchbook can be a game changer. So, go forth and find your perfect sketchbook match!

Choosing the right sketchbook isn't a one-size-fits-all situation. It's about understanding what you need from your sketchbook and finding one that fits the bill. Here's how you can make an informed choice:

  • Understand your art style: Do you like creating detailed, intricate drawings or are you more of a broad strokes kind of artist? The level of detail you prefer in your work can guide your choice of sketchbook. For finer details, a sketchbook with smooth paper would be ideal. If you like to play with textures, pick a sketchbook with a bit of tooth.
  • Consider your usage: If you're the kind of artist who likes to carry your sketchbook everywhere, a compact sketchbook would be your best bet. On the other hand, if your art sessions are usually at home or in a studio, a larger sketchbook might serve you better.
  • Factor in your budget: Art supplies can be pricey, and sketchbooks are no exception. However, remember that the quality of your sketchbook can directly affect the outcome of your artwork. So, while it's important to stick to your budget, don't compromise on quality.
  • Experiment: Sometimes, you might need to try out a few different sketchbooks before you find the one that feels just right. Don't be afraid to experiment and explore. Who knows, you might stumble upon the best sketchbook for colored pencils in the most unexpected place!

Remember, the journey of finding the best sketchbook for colored pencils is as personal as the art you create. Take your time, do your research, and most importantly, enjoy the process!

If you're looking for a sketchbook that embraces colored pencils like a long-lost friend, the Strathmore Series might just be your match. Let's delve into why this might be the best sketchbook for colored pencils for your artistic journey.

Firstly, the Strathmore Series offers a range of sketchbooks with different paper weights. This means you can choose a sketchbook that can handle the pressure you put on your pencils—literally! The paper allows colored pencils to glide across its surface, creating a seamless, blended look that's hard to achieve on rougher paper.

Lastly, the durability of these sketchbooks is something to be appreciated. The hardcover protects your precious artwork, and the spiral binding lets you flip pages with ease. You can also tear out pages cleanly if you want to frame or gift your art.

Let's move on to another contender in our quest for the best sketchbook for colored pencils - the illo Premium Sketchbook. This sketchbook is a favorite among many artists, and there are plenty of reasons why.

One of the first things you'll notice about the illo Premium is its thick, 180 GSM paper. This type of paper is perfect for colored pencil art. It's heavy enough to withstand many layers of color without tearing or bleeding. Plus, the slight tooth on the paper's surface allows the colored pencils to grip well, resulting in rich, vibrant colors.

What sets the illo Premium apart is its square shape. Unlike the typical rectangular sketchbooks, the illo Premium is a perfect square. This unique format can inspire you to think out of the box and create some truly unique artwork.

Another cool feature of the illo Premium is its leatherette cover. Not only does it look sleek, but it also provides excellent protection for your artwork. Plus, the elastic band keeps the sketchbook closed when not in use, ensuring your pages stay pristine.

The illo Premium also has a lay-flat design, so you can work on your art smoothly and comfortably. No worries about the sketchbook closing on its own or pages flipping over. It's a small detail, but it can significantly improve your drawing experience.

So, if you're looking for a unique, high-quality sketchbook for your colored pencils, the illo Premium Sketchbook is definitely worth considering. It might just be the tool you need to take your art to the next level!

Once you've found the best sketchbook for colored pencils, it's important to take good care of it. After all, your sketchbook is more than just a collection of papers; it's a record of your artistic journey. So, here are some tips on how to ensure your sketchbook stays in top shape for a long time.

First off, avoid bending or folding the pages. It might seem basic, but it's easy to accidentally crease a page when you're deep in the creative process. Bending the pages can damage the paper and affect how your colored pencils lay down color. So, be gentle with your sketchbook and treat each page with respect.

Next, keep your sketchbook dry. Water and moisture can warp the pages and cause the colors to bleed. If you're working outside or in a humid environment, consider using a protective cover or case for your sketchbook. And if you accidentally spill something on your sketchbook, blot the area gently with a dry cloth and let it air dry.

Finally, keep your sketchbook clean. It's easy for eraser shavings, dust, and smudged colors to build up on your pages. You can use a soft brush or a blower to remove any loose debris. Also, consider using a separate sheet of paper under your hand while drawing to prevent smudging.

Remember, a well-cared-for sketchbook not only looks good but also functions better. It allows your colored pencils to perform their best, leading to artwork that you can be proud of. So, show your sketchbook some love, and it will return the favor with stunning, vibrant drawings!
