Canada has long been celebrated as a land of opportunity and a beacon of hope for immigrants seeking a better life. Known for its inclusiveness, diversity, and strong social welfare system, Canada has welcomed millions of immigrants from all corners of the globe. These individuals come to the country with aspirations, dreams, and determination to build a brighter future for themselves and their families. In this article, we will explore the remarkable stories of immigrants who have not only embraced the Canadian Dream but have also achieved extraordinary success in their chosen fields. From entrepreneurs and innovators to artists and community leaders, their journeys serve as a testament to the power of perseverance, hard work, and the opportunities that Canada provides.

From Humble Beginnings to Acclaimed Entrepreneurs

One shining example of the Canadian Dream is the story of the Chopra family. Arriving in Canada with little more than their hopes and dreams, Ravi and Priya Chopra established a small ethnic grocery store in Vancouver. Over time, their business thrived, and they expanded into a successful chain of supermarkets that catered to diverse communities. Today, the Chopra family is recognized as one of the most influential immigrant success stories in Canada.

Similarly, Abdul Khan, an immigrant from Pakistan, transformed his passion for culinary arts into a thriving restaurant business. With his commitment to authenticity and quality, Khan’s restaurant quickly gained popularity, attracting patrons from all walks of life. His hard work and dedication not only earned him financial success but also recognition as a pillar of the community.

These stories highlight the entrepreneurial spirit and resilience of immigrants who turn humble beginnings into remarkable achievements, contributing to the economic growth and diversity of Canada.

From Adversity to Excellence: Immigrant Professionals

Another facet of the Canadian Dream is the triumph of immigrants in professional fields. Dr. Maria Santos, a medical doctor from the Philippines, overcame numerous challenges to practice medicine in Canada. Despite the need to navigate a complex system and obtain additional certifications, Dr. Santos persisted. Today, she is a respected physician serving her community and inspiring others with her determination.

Similarly, Mohammed Rahman, an engineer from Bangladesh, faced numerous barriers upon arriving in Canada. However, he undertook further education and certification programs to align his skills with Canadian standards. Eventually, he founded his own engineering firm, contributing to infrastructure development projects across the country.

These stories demonstrate the resilience and adaptability of immigrants, who, despite the hurdles, strive to excel in their chosen professions and make significant contributions to Canadian society.

Cultural Enrichment and Artistic Achievement

The Canadian Dream encompasses not only economic success but also the freedom to express oneself culturally and artistically. Renowned author and poet, Amira Ahmed, arrived in Canada as a refugee from Somalia. She found solace in writing, using her powerful words to shed light on the refugee experience. Amira’s literary works have received critical acclaim, earning her a place among the most celebrated Canadian authors.

In the world of music, Maestro Liu Zhang, a violinist from China, found his calling in Canada. With access to world-class education and diverse musical influences, he developed his talent and became an esteemed member of the renowned Canadian Symphony Orchestra. His performances have mesmerized audiences worldwide, showcasing the vibrancy and diversity of Canadian culture.

These stories highlight how Canada’s nurturing environment and support for artistic expression have allowed immigrants to flourish and enrich the country’s cultural fabric.

The Canadian Dream is not merely an abstract concept but a living reality for countless immigrants who have found success and fulfillment in the Great White North. The stories of Ravi and Priya Chopra, Dr. Maria Santos, Amira Ahmed, and many others are a testament to the endless possibilities Canada offers to those who dare to dream. Whether through entrepreneurship, professional excellence, or artistic endeavors, immigrants have made immeasurable contributions to Canada’s prosperity and cultural mosaic.

These inspiring stories remind us that diversity is not just a buzzword but an invaluable asset that drives innovation, creativity, and progress. As Canada continues to welcome immigrants with open arms, their stories will continue to shape the nation, reaffirming the belief that the Canadian Dream is a powerful force that propels individuals to reach extraordinary heights.

What happened in the Kolkata rape case that triggered doctors’ protests?

Activists and doctors in India demand better safeguarding of women and medical professionals after a trainee medic was raped and murdered in Kolkata.

Following a murder of a 31 year old post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor by rape and torture inside a government hospital, activists of different humanitarian and political organisations and medical professionals participate in a rally with posters and torches demanding adequate intervention of the ruling government and exemplary punishment of the culprits, in Kolkata, India, Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2024.

Activists and doctors across India continued to protest on Wednesday to demand justice for a female doctor, who was raped and murdered while on duty in a hospital in the eastern city of Kolkata.

Feminist groups rallied on the streets in protests titled “Reclaim the Night” in Kolkata overnight on Wednesday – on the eve of India’s independence day – in solidarity with the victim, demanding the principal of RG Kar Medical College resign. Some feminist protesters also marched well beyond Kolkata, including in the capital Delhi.

While the protests were largely peaceful, a small mob of men stormed the medical college and vandalised property. This group was dispersed by the police.

This comes after two days of nationwide protests by doctors following the incident at RG Kar Medical College in West Bengal’s capital city. “Sit-in demonstrations and agitation in the hospital campus will continue,” one of the protesting doctors, identified as Dr Mridul, told Al Jazeera.

Services in some medical centres were halted indefinitely, and marches and vigils shed light on issues of sexual violence, as well as doctors’ safety in the world’s most populous nation.

What happened to the doctor in Kolkata?

A 31-year-old trainee doctor’s dead body, bearing multiple injuries, was found on August 9 in a government teaching hospital in Kolkata.

The parents of the victim were initially told “by hospital authorities that their daughter had committed suicide,” lawyer and women’s rights activist Vrinda Grover told Al Jazeera. But an autopsy confirmed that the victim was raped and killed.

Grover has appeared for victims in sexual violence cases in India in the past, including Bilkis Bano , a Muslim woman who was gang-raped during the 2002 Gujarat riots, and Soni Sori, a tribal activist based in Chhattisgarh state.

Thousands of doctors marched in Kolkata on Monday, demanding better security measures and justice for the victim.

On Tuesday, the Kolkata High Court transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) called for a nationwide halting of elective services in hospitals starting on Monday. Elective services are medical treatments that can be deferred or are not deemed medically necessary.

On Tuesday, FORDA announced on its X account that it is calling off the strike after Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda accepted protest demands.

One of these demands was solidifying the Central Protection Act, intended to be a central law to protect medical professionals from violence, which was proposed in the parliament’s lower house in 2022, but has not yet been enacted.

FORDA said that the ministry would begin working on the Act within 15 days of the news release, and that a written statement from the ministry was expected to be released soon.

Why are some Indian doctors continuing to protest?

However, other doctors’ federations and hospitals have said they will not back down on the strike until a concrete solution is found, including a central law to curb attacks on doctors.

Those continuing to strike included the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA), Delhi-based All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Indira Gandhi Hospital, local media reported.

Ragunandan Dixit, the general secretary of the AIIMS Resident Doctors’ Association, said that the indefinite strike will continue until their demands are met, including a written guarantee of the implementation of the Central Protection Act.

Medical professionals in India want a central law that makes violence against doctors a non-bailable, punishable offence, in hopes that it deters such violent crimes against doctors in the future.

Those continuing to protest also call for the dismissal of the principal of the college, who was transferred. “We’re demanding his termination, not just transfer,” Dr Abdul Waqim Khan, a protesting doctor told ANI news agency. “We’re also demanding a death penalty for the criminal,” he added.

“Calling off the strike now would mean that female resident doctors might never receive justice,” Dr Dhruv Chauhan, member of the National Council of the Indian Medical Association’s Junior Doctors’ Network told local news agency Press Trust of India (PTI).

Which states in India saw doctors’ protests?

While the protests started in West Bengal’s Kolkata on Monday, they spread across the country on Tuesday.

The capital New Delhi, union territory Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow and city Prayagraj, Bihar capital Patna and southern state Goa also saw doctors’ protests.

Who is the suspect in the Kolkata rape case?

Local media reported that the police arrested suspect Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer who would visit the hospital often. He has unrestricted access to the ward and the police found compelling evidence against him.

The parents of the victim told the court that they suspect that it was a case of gang rape, local media reported.

Why is sexual violence on the rise in India?

Sexual violence is rampant in India, where 90 rapes were reported on average every day in 2022.

Laws against sexual violence were made stricter following a rape case in 2012, when a 22-year-old physiotherapy intern was brutally gang-raped and murdered on a bus in Delhi. Four men were hanged for the gang rape, which had triggered a nationwide protests.

But despite new laws in place, “the graph of sexual violence in India continues to spiral unabated,” said Grover.

She added that in her experience at most workplaces, scant attention is paid to diligent and rigorous enforcement of the laws.

“It is regrettable that government and institutions respond only after the woman has already suffered sexual assault and often succumbed to death in the incident,” she added, saying preventive measures are not taken.

In many rape cases in India, perpetrators have not been held accountable. In 2002, Bano was raped by 11 men, who were sentenced to life imprisonment. In 2022, the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi authorised the release of the men, who were greeted with applause and garlands upon their release.

However, their remission was overruled and the Supreme Court sent the rapists back to jail after public outcry.

Grover believes that the death penalty will not deter rapists until India addresses the deeply entrenched problem of sexual violence. “For any change, India as a society will have to confront and challenge, patriarchy, discrimination and inequality that is embedded in our homes, families, cultural practices, social norms and religious traditions”.

What makes this case particularly prominent is that it happened in Kolkata, Sandip Roy, a freelance contributor to NPR, told Al Jazeera. “Kolkata actually prided itself for a long time on being really low in the case of violence against women and being relatively safe for women.”

A National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report said that Kolkata had the lowest number of rape cases in 2021 among 19 metropolitan cities, with 11 cases in the whole year. In comparison, New Delhi was reported to have recorded 1, 226 cases that year.

Prime Minister Modi’s governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for dismissing the government in West Bengal, where Kolkata is located, led by Mamata Banerjee of All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). Banerjee’s party is part of the opposition alliance.

Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in parliament, also called for justice for the victim.

“The attempt to save the accused instead of providing justice to the victim raises serious questions on the hospital and the local administration,” he posted on X on Wednesday.

Roy spoke about the politicisation of the case since an opposition party governs West Bengal. “The local government’s opposition will try to make this an issue of women’s safety in the state,” he said.

Have doctors in India protested before?

Roy explained to Al Jazeera that this case is an overlap of two kinds of violence, the violence against a woman, as well as violence against “an overworked medical professional”.

Doctors in India do not have sufficient workplace security, and attacks on doctors have started protests in India before.

In 2019, two junior doctors were physically assaulted in Kolkata’s Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital (NRSMCH) by a mob of people after a 75-year-old patient passed away in the hospital.

Those attacks set off doctors’ protests in Kolkata, and senior doctors in West Bengal offered to resign from their positions to express solidarity with the junior doctors who were attacked.

More than 75 percent of Indian doctors have faced some form of violence, according to a survey by the Indian Medical Association in 2015.

What happens next?

The case will now be handled by the CBI, which sent a team to the hospital premises to inspect the crime scene on Wednesday morning, local media reported.

According to Indian law, the investigation into a case of rape or gang rape is to be completed within two months from the date of lodging of the First Information Report (police complaint), according to Grover, the lawyer.

The highest court in West Bengal, which transferred the case from the local police to the CBI on Tuesday, has directed the central investigating agency to file periodic status reports regarding the progress of the investigation.

The FIR was filed on August 9, which means the investigation is expected to be completed by October 9.

Bengal women will create history with a night long protest in various major locations in the state for at 11.55pm on 14th of August’24,the night that’ll mark our 78th year as an independent country. My Dream Country

Essay writing competition 2020 category: 8 - 11 years - commendation -.

Highly commended essay "My Dream Country" written by Xin Yong Lim .

dream country canada essay

‘Mom, I cannot stay home forever! Hate Covid-19!’

'Cheerful. Happy. Awesome. Nature. Good. Easy. It's CHANGE'. Mommy replied. ‘Be the President. Rule your own country tomorrow onwards’.

I read the acronyms many times. I realized we do not have to be the real President of a country to CHANGE the world. We just need to build the country of our dreams to make the change that can CHANGE the world.

I stayed CHEERFUL, made peace with my twin sister that I usually fight with. When daddy was sad not being able to work, I snuggle and cheer him. When grandma was sad, I praised her cooking that it was so awesome and she cooked tastier the next day. After all, I’m the President of my own country. I have the authority to curve the smile upward instead of downward. If I ever become a President of my own country named ‘JOYLAND’, it’s compulsory for everyone to post in Facebook or Instagram daily ‘I made this person smile today’.

Online classroom came as I missed my teachers and classmates.  2pm daily, Monday till Friday was my ‘HAPPY’ moment. I forgot that I spilled my cereals that day. I appreciate that one hour like I never did before. I completed my homework and screenshot into Google classroom, feeling accomplished. I would create ‘HAPPY’ HOUR in workplace at ‘JOYLAND’ for people to do what they are passionate about.

Imagine a secretary has an extra one hour break to cook for her colleagues or a teacher has an extra one hour from teaching Science to show her students gardening or on a guitar. More play time and it’s AWESOME to stay home to stay safe!

As the President of ‘JOYLAND’, we learned kids’ yoga and unicorn can be a yoga pose! Country of my dream connects lives with Mother NATURE. Grandma smiled when she harvested her first tomato and bunch of spinach. Mommy placed lemongrass at our bathrooms as natural insect repellents. When I am the real President, I would call for natural vitamins of lemonade to replace vitamin C tablets and Mother Nature is the top priority in everything!

Our neighbour cried she lost her job at a hotel. I wish I am the President and GOOD spending habits are nurtured from young. Banks reward when a child brings her piggy bank to the bank, unlock and handed the savings to the banker. Children would save for rainy days. Red carpet going to the counter in banks and machines built at children’s height. How cool! Surely children would love saving money and adults’ teary moments can reduce later on.

One day, I became grumpy and naughty. Grandma made my favourite omelette and said ‘EASY’. Take it easy, unhappy times will pass. The next week, I was allowed to return to school with special restrictions of wearing mask and social distance. I decided to take it ‘EASIER’ when things are tougher!

Surely, the country of my dream can overcome any challenge with C.H.A.N.G.E!

Cover-19 really made me CHANGE for the better. I hope everyone too will accept CHANGE for the brighter tomorrow. All of us can habe the country of our dreams! Dream and Be!

In the Age category 8 - 11 years, Xin Yong's essay sends a powerful message. Similar to her sister's award-winning essay ' Malaysia My Beloved Country' .

Xin Yong spreads inspiration and puts emphasis on the virtue of staying positive in these tough times. We wholeheartedly agree that change is much needed, remembering the strength of community and Mother Nature, sharing love and positivity is what makes challenges as the current pandemic so much easier to bear and overcome.

Well done, Xin Yong! Thank you very much for your extraordinary story 'My Dream Country'! Congratulations!

Xin Yong attends Chung Hwa One Chinese Primary School in Butterworth/Penang in Malaysia.

W.H.O. Declares Global Emergency Over New Mpox Outbreak

The epidemic is concentrated in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but the virus has now appeared in a dozen other African countries.

A health worker in a yellow gown, a white mask and a blue hairnet holds a sealed plastic bag containing samples in a makeshift laboratory space in a tent.

By Apoorva Mandavilli

The rapid spread of mpox, formerly called monkeypox, in African countries constitutes a global health emergency, the World Health Organization declared on Wednesday.

This is the second time in three years that the W.H.O. has designated an mpox epidemic as a global emergency. It previously did so in July 2022. That outbreak went on to affect nearly 100,000 people , primarily gay and bisexual men, in 116 countries, and killed about 200 people.

The threat this time is deadlier. Since the beginning of this year, the Democratic Republic of Congo alone has reported 15,600 mpox cases and 537 deaths. Those most at risk include women and children under 15.

“The detection and rapid spread of a new clade of mpox in eastern D.R.C., its detection in neighboring countries that had not previously reported mpox, and the potential for further spread within Africa and beyond is very worrying,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the W.H.O.’s director general.

The outbreak has spread through 13 countries in Africa, including a few that had never reported mpox cases before. On Tuesday, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared a “public health emergency of continental security,” the first time the organization has taken that step since the African Union granted it the power to do so last year.

“It’s in the interests of the countries, of the continent and of the world to get our arms around this and stop transmission as soon as we can,” said Dr. Nicole Lurie, the executive director for preparedness and response at the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, a nonprofit that finances vaccine development.

Essay on India of My Dreams for Students and Children

500 words essay on india of my dreams.

India is a country where people of all cultures and religions coexist together. I suppose that each of us has dreamt about some version of India. Obviously, we may dream about anything at any time, and as Indian citizens, we are continuously looking for methods to improve our country and see a better India. Peace and prosperity are my hopes for our great country. India will be a great country when every citizen follows the rule of law, supports the nation with their families, and does something to make India a better place.

The India of my dream would be a country where women are safe and walk freely on road. Also, it will be a place where there is freedom of equality to all and everyone can enjoy it in their true sense. Furthermore, it would be a place where there is no discrimination of caste, color, gender , creed, social or economic status, and race. In addition, I see it as a place that sees an abundance of development and growth.

Essay on India of My Dreams

How can we make our dream India possible?

If we collectively look into everything, we will be able to identify the causes and solutions to all of the world’s problems. Similarly, building a great nation and resolving its deep-rooted problems is an attainable goal. India must have the following characteristics in order to become a Great Country:

  • Law That Is Just and Effective
  • Society of Peace
  • Equality of opportunity for everyone
  • Uncorrupted systems
  • Unbiased educational system

When these things become a reality, the entire country will take notice, and everyone will have the opportunity to enjoy a healthy and prosperous life. That is why we must all work together to bring about change in our country and contribute to improving people’s lives. Every person must work with their family and society, as well as support our government, which is also doing its bit by providing adequate education, transportation, food for everybody, and employment opportunities to all segments of society.

Technological Advancement

I would like to see India become more scientifically, technologically, and agriculturally sophisticated. I want to see an India where rationality and scientific ideas triumph over blind faith and bigotry. Because the present age is the age of science and information technology, I would like to bring India to the pinnacle of scientific and technical advancement. Scientific and technological developments are required since they are a critical stepping stone in the development of a country.

Women Empowerment

There is a lot of discrimination against women. But, still, the women are stepping out of their houses and making a mark on different fields and on society. In addition, there are a lot of areas that need to be worked upon whether it is female feticide or restricting them to the household task. Besides, many NGO and social groups have come forward to promote women empowerment .

However, we have to work hard to change the mindset of society. I dream of India as a country that sees women as its assets, not as liabilities. Also, I want to place women on an equal level as men.

Though there are many initiatives by the government to promote education. But there are many people who do not realize its true importance. The India of my dream will be a place where education will be mandatory for all.

I wish there were no uneducated people in India of my dreams. I would like to see India implement a system of education that allows every individual to earn a living. In my dream India, I would like the people of my country to appreciate the value of education and to encourage their children to pursue school rather than working in menial professions at a young age.

Employment Opportunities

Although there are many educated people in India. But, due to corruption and many other reasons they are unable to get a decent job. Besides, there are many employment opportunities in the country but they are either limited or don’t pay well enough. One of the reasons for this is weak industrial growth in the country.

In addition, reservation is a hindrance in this path as most of the deserving candidates lose their good opportunities because of it. Many of these deserving candidates go abroad and work for the economic growth of other countries . The Indian of My dream will be a place where the deserving candidate will get the job first rather than reserved candidates.

Get the huge list of more than 500 Essay Topics and Ideas

Caste Discrimination

Though India got independence in 1947, still we are not able to get complete independence from caste, religion, and creed discrimination. It is shameful to see how in certain parts of the country the people of the lower section of the society are denied the basic rights .

However, there are various social groups that speak for their rights and help them to oppose this oppression. Besides, I dream of an India where there is no discrimination of any kind.

Corruption is one of the major reasons that are hindering the growth of the nation . Instead of making an effort to serve the growth of the country the officials and politicians are busy filling their own pockets. So, I dream of an India where the minister and official are dedicated to their work and wholly for the development of the country.

A big number of well-educated persons appear to be unemployed as a result of politicians’ severe corruption and harshness. Because of the reservation system, the majority of deserving individuals have been denied the opportunity. My hope for India is that deserving applicants, not reserved candidates, receive the correct jobs. I would also like to see India become a place where the government’s primary focus is on the benefit of the country.

In conclusion, the India of my dream will be an ideal country where every citizen will be equal. Also, there is no discrimination of any type. In addition, it will be a place where women are seen as equals to men and respected equally.

Gender Discrimination and Inequality

It’s terrible to see how, despite showing themselves in every aspect of life, women are still regarded as inferior to males. My ideal India will be one in which women are protected in all circumstances, good or bad. There will be no more torture, domestic violence, or male dominance over women. Women will be able to pursue their dreams with greater freedom. In my future country, they should be treated equally and have the right to care. It would be a location where the safety of women would be of the first importance.

Medical Support

The sole goal of the medical profession shall be to protect people free from discomfort and sickness, with proper regard and respect for age and with all due consideration for the health of all the best medical facilities available. Not for profit, but for the sake of service. The elderly would be properly cared for, and life would appear to be worth living for as long as they lived. People in my ideal country would be born healthy, hopeful, and happy, and they would live happily ever after.
