Home Office Furniture

Home office cabinets have become essential.

Some home office cabinets are as simple as a built-in kitchen desk; a small area to check the mail; pay a few bills or a spot where the kids can do their homework.  Other home offices include multiple workstations and built-in bookcases.    The traditional home office cabinets featuring a built-in desk and built-in shelves are still very popular.  Home office furniture can be custom designed to fit the needs of you and your family.

The Custom Desk and Homework Station Your Kids Will Love

Looking for a custom desk and homework station that not only your kids will love, but you will too? In other words, a custom desk that is both functional and cosmetically appealing? Then you’ve come to the right place!

Affiliate links are included in this post. All this means is that I may earn a tiny commission on items you purchase through my link. This will not cost you a penny more and is paid by the brand. As always, I only recommend products I 100% use and love myself. Thank you for supporting Simply September!

Where it all Began

It all started in 2020. Overnight our children went from public school to homeschool and virtual school in a blink of an eye. Like so many other parents around the world, we struggled to come up with a plan. A tentative schedule, an impromptu desk space, and a prayer… we were ready to go- or so we thought.

As the days turned into weeks and the weeks into months, anxieties stabilized while new ones grew. Despite the increasing predictability, two stressors remained: 1) the obvious- just how long will our kids be learning from home? and 2) I can’t look at this cluttered, impromptu learning space for one day more!

When our children’s playroom turned into their impromptu classroom, there was little immediate need for aesthetics. We borrowed a small table from my parent’s house and called it good. And good it was… until it wasn’t.

When Things Changed

All too quickly the space was overrun. Papers everywhere, increased fighting sharing a small space for two children, furniture touching other furniture with limited space to maneuver… we were all running out of patience… and FAST!

custom homework desk

Our impromptu learning space. The desk we borrowed from my parent’s house. One kiddo working on the ground due to limited space on the table. Paperwork and books EVERYWHERE!

We needed a more permanent fix. A workspace where both our children could have room to learn and work without bumping into one another. We needed a place for paper to be stored (out of sight, out of mind), and we needed a place to walk without bumping into unnecessary furniture.

Due to the location of our children’s playroom (off our main family room), we knew we wanted the fix to be aesthetically pleasing. Sure, they wouldn’t be doing virtual school forever ( or so we hoped! ), but there would ALWAYS be the need for a homework station as they grew. A one stop location in which our girls could return from school and set up shop to work, all while staying close enough to receive assistance and support as needed.

How Our Vision Came to Be

After endless late nights spent scouring Pinterest ( is there really any other way to design a space? 😉 ), it became clear that a custom desk is what was needed in our particular scenario. As beautiful as ready-made desks were… they lacked some key criteria for us: 1) Ability to house two children with enough space, 2) sufficient storage, and 3) fitting snuggly on the allocated wall in the playroom.

After getting my husband on board with the plan ( I’ve been known to wake him up the next morning with the phrase, “now hear me out” 😉 )… we agreed to move forward with our custom desk and homework station for our girls.

A Bit of a Roadblock

It didn’t take long before we realized we were trading in the anxiety of our cluttered workspace for a new anxiety- determining how to make this space custom. So we reached out to our home builder. As talented as he was/is, his timeline (booking at least six months out) and his proposal cost was far from what we envisioned. We wanted a beautiful custom desk and homework station designed quickly and affordably… not to much to ask for, right? ;).

We were determined we’d have to change plans. Either we’d scratch the whole idea, simplify our design to cut down on budget, or have a go at it ourselves.

We chose the latter!

Were We Qualified?

Now, before you think… okay, I couldn’t possibly build something custom myself… know that you aren’t alone! With VERY limited woodworking experience ourselves (i.e. we put together a few IKEA bookshelves in the past 😉 ), we had one ace up our sleeve- my Dad. Although not a woodworking professional himself, we were blessed to have his knowledge from years of hobby projects around the house. He had the tools, he had the baseline knowledge, and he had the patience and willingness to help us.

In return, we finally had a plan!

Insert yet another late night of scouring the internet and our dream space was truly turning into a possibility.

It’s Really Happening!

A very special thank you to Cabinet Joint for sponsoring this post. As always, I ONLY recommend products that I 100% use and love myself. Rest assured that if I wouldn’t recommend it to my mom, I wouldn’t recommend it to you!

It was at this time that I found Cabinet Joint . “ Finely crafted, fully custom RTA cabinetry “. RTA stands for “ready to assemble” and it was EXACTLY what we needed!

This one stop location would allow me to work with a designer to customize a space, then have the cabinetry pre-made and shipped to us for assembly. This was exactly what I had envisioned all along- I just never new it existed! The look of a custom desk and homework station just like had been quoted by our builder, but at a fraction of the cost and sliver of the time!

The very next day I got in touch with Cabinet Joint, and from the minute I did, I haven’t stopped being impressed.

Cabinet Joint creates all cabinets right here in the USA. Using dovetail construction and plywood boxes, they offer custom sizes (to the 1/16″) and configurations at no extra cost. A huge selection of door and finish styles (and paint colors!), all doors and drawers are soft close hinges and glides. Lastly, they offer one-on-one design services so you don’t run the risk of ordering incorrectly.

Cabinet Joint Design Services

With a series of design services available from basic to pro plans (see them all here ), I opted for the pro package and was so glad I did.

By opting for this package, I received direct access to a designer (an incredible designer may I add). With free revisions included, I literally sent her my Pinterest photo inspiration and she rendered the most gorgeous drawing. Emailing back and forth we took into account windows, floor boards, ceiling height, door openings, and more.

It was also at this time that we decided to add in a window seat for additional storage and built-in aesthetic. This package also allowed me to simply send my designer pictures of our existing crown molding and cabinet doors and she easily found ones to match perfectly. Lastly, by choosing this package, fees are credited back toward your order, for up to 2% of your order total!

The exact space we had to work with. While it was far from huge, we had very large plans.

Placing Our Order

As the calendar turned from 2020 to 2021 (mind you, it took us months to decide upon the DIY route), we kicked off the new year with a phone call to our Cabinet Joint “cabinet coach”. Our girls were still very much in virtual school and we were as eager as ever to get our custom desk and homework station ordered. Going over the design one final time, the order was placed (at a fraction of the cost we once thought we’d be spending- Cabinet Joint is on average 50% LESS than big box stores and customers regularly save $10,000 or more over other kitchen cabinet quotes)!

It’s Go Time!

A few short weeks later, I received a call that our cabinets were finished and would be delivered on four large pallets. As the FedEx semi-truck rolled up to our house I must admit there was a part of me that thought, “W hat did I get myself into?!, I’m far from Joanna Gaines. “. But there was no turning back, so we were going to fake it until we make it (spoiler alert, we made it)!

Two days later as the weekend arrived, it was go time!

Prepped and ready to go, my Dad had tools laid out, plans taped up, packages sorted, videos watched, and even gear for our littlest helpers who couldn’t have been more excited for the final reveal! Did I mention we got SO lucky having my Dad for this project?!

custom homework desk

During the ordering process I made sure to take notes from the phone call with our “cabinet coach”. We then referred back to these throughout the build.

Dressed the part and ready to help!

Luckily we lasted a bit longer than they did ;).

Tutorial Videos

Speaking of videos… Cabinet Joint offers a HUGE library of videos and tutorials that walk you through every single step of the way!

Our makeshift work station so we could watch the videos while we worked.

That said, they far from leave you to figure it out on your own if stumped. After confusion set in three hours into our construction, I simply placed a phone call to my “cabinet coach” and received a call back within the hour! With step-by-step directions we were back on the course and powering through!

The nail gun was my favorite part by far!

My Dad installing the slow close aspects of the drawers. The quality is truly amazing!

Our Vision Came to Life!

The very next day it was time for installation! Once again the video provided by Cabinet Joint walked us through everything. From how to hang cabinet drawers, how to attach drawer faces and hardware, how to adjust slow-close drawers, etc.

custom desk and homework station

Old desk workspace still in place until the entire project was complete!

As the pieces came together, so did our vision… one that was MANY months in the making!

Over the next week we completed the finishing touches. We designed and installed shelving between the upper cabinets.

custom desk and homework station

Here we opted to build shelving in the middle for more storage and for decorative features.

We drilled holes for electrical power grommets (we envision computers going here one day).

custom homework desk

I think this was the scariest part for me. Drilling the holes in the tabletop for the grommets .  I was so nervous we’d mess up, but it went flawlessly!

We added decorations and lighting (all linked below).

Shop the Look!  !function(d,s,id){ var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https'; if(!d.getElementById(id)) { e = d.createElement(s); e.id = id; e.src = p + '://widgets.rewardstyle.com/js/shopthepost.js'; d.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.__stp === 'object') if(d.readyState === 'complete') { window.__stp.init(); } }(document, 'script', 'shopthepost-script'); Turn on your JavaScript to view content

We found the perfect chairs (we opted to make the desks standard adult height so the girls wouldn’t outgrow them. In order to make chair height effective for them at their current age, I found chair pads to raise the height).

custom homework desk

And we organized the drawers and shelves, while also adding glass protectors for the writing spaces, and fun pulls and knobs!

custom desk and homework station

The Final Reveal!

After months and months of planning… the space was COMPLETE and we couldn’t be more excited!

custom desk and homework station

Coming off our family room… it was important that the entire built-in unit flowed from one room to the next.

We even finished off the opposite side of the room for reading and playtime.

Reflecting on Our Journey

Opting to go the custom desk and installation route for our homework station brought us zero regrets. Not only did we complete the project in record time, not only did we save a ton of money, but we also have the incredible pride of knowing we did it ourselves!

While there may be many aspects of 2020 and possibly 2021 that we will someday be just fine forgetting, this custom desk and homework station will most definitely NOT be one of them! Specifically the first time we saw the girls at their desk space!

After speaking with Cabinet Joint they have very generously offered a discount code for anyone else who may be interested in creating their own custom desk or custom space (including kitchens and more). Simply direct message me via Instagram and I’ll happily send it your way!

A very special thank you to both Cabinet Joint (and my Dad) for making our custom desk and homework station dream a reality!

Your home desk is an incredibly versatile piece of furniture. And it has to put up with a lot. Maybe you're working long hours on the computer with stressful deadlines. Or you might be spending a lot of time gaming with your friends, working hard to level up. Perhaps you’re a persistent student, needing room for school books and notepads. And on top of all that, you might want a workspace for your hobbies as well, be it scrapbooking or painting miniatures.

In other words, choosing the right desk is crucial. Luckily, we’re here to help you out!

A smaller home office desk for cramped spaces

Smaller desks are best suited for smaller spaces. But they can be used in ways that make them incredibly surface-efficient. Take corner desks, for example. Awesome if you really want to use your space to the max. And if you want to hide the home office desk when not in use, we have a great tip: put a curtain or blind above it. That way, when you’re done, you can just pull the curtain and poof! The whole desk is gone. And folding desks can give you even more space. This, since they can simply be folded away when you're done!

Go big with a larger home desk

A larger home desk is perfect in bigger homes where you need a lot of workspace. If you have a dedicated home office, you can go for a big desk that becomes the focal point of your room. If you’ve got a large desktop computer tower, check out a desk with a contoured tabletop and adjustable shelves for storage. Either way, it’s great to be able to fit everything you need within arm’s reach, from computer and keyboard, to notepads and coffee cups.

Larger desks also often have storage for all your work stuff, so you don’t have to look at that mess all the time. And another great thing: you often get more legroom if the desk is larger. Quite a benefit if you’re spending many and long hours behind it.

Smart solutions and great gadgets

If ergonomics is more your thing, we recommend that you look into one of our height-adjustable desks. Great if you have a sedentary job. Set a timer on your mobile and switch from sitting to standing at 45-minute intervals. It’s good for your back and you get a better posture at the same time. Provided you are standing properly and not slouching, of course.

There are other smart things you can consider having for your desk as well. A monitor stand, for example is a great way to raise the screen a bit, especially if you have a laptop and a fixed home computer desk. Perhaps you want a holder under the desk that keeps all the cables in place, or holes in the corner to lead the cords down to the floor.

And let’s not forget about the desk chair ! It’s just as important for your working position and posture as your home computer desk. In our range, you’ll definitely find one that is kind to both your back and your wallet.

DIY Desks: How to Build Your Own Desk and 35 DIY Desk Ideas

faith

Updated on April 27, 2022

How to organize your desk

Building desks is a trend for modern homes and small offices, especially if you work from home. The idea is to create something functional yet classy enough to match any interior design. Check out these awesome desk ideas.

Diy desks

The best part about it is that you can come up with your own design by turning to specialized image editing software like SketchUp , which is online and free to use. However, if you need inspiration, you can find many DIY desk projects on the web.

Picking a specific design depends on multiple factors : available space in your home, budget, and woodworking skills. Of course, the last part is optional since you can always hire a professional woodworker to create the custom office desk of your dreams.

Best DIY Desk Ideas to Try

If you need inspiration, check out the following DIY desk ideas.

1. Fold-Down Wall Desk – Small Desk with Storage

Fold-Down Wall Desk - Small Desk with Storage

A fold-down wall desk is an excellent solution for people who live in small homes or studio apartments. In addition to its compact size, the desk folds up when not in use so that it doesn’t get in your way.

The bad news is that the desk isn’t sturdy enough to support a lot of weight, so you shouldn’t try to place anything heavier than a laptop on it. For example, don’t think about using your printer here since the desk will probably break down.

On the bright side, you can use this desk for other purposes when you’re not working on your laptop. For example, you can work on crafting projects, write, draw, and even iron your clothes. Furthermore, you can take advantage of the small storage space that comes with this design.

Head over to DIY Huntress to get the full details on how to make this small desk with storage .

2. Simple Two-Person Desk

Simple Two-Person Desk

A person who works from home knows the importance of having a good desk. This is where you can place your computer , set out lovely decorations, and even put together small crafts with your kids.

If you work with someone else on a regular basis, like a spouse, family member, or friend, you might want to consider creating a simple two-person desk .

This way, you can both sit comfortably while working on projects, which is especially important if the work requires intense concentration.

And, when the second person is on vacation and not working on the nice desk, you can use it as extra space for printers, scanners, boxes, and so on.

You would think that building a DIY desk with drawers for two would be complicated, but this project proves otherwise. All you need are a couple of drawers, a butcher’s block, and wood stain.

DIY Domestic Blonde has all the details for this project, so check it out.

3. Wood Crate Desk – Cheap Office Desk

Wood Crate Desk - Cheap Office Desk

Some people are definitely committed to recycling . They think outside the box for their creative projects and want to find new uses for old objects.

If you’re one of them, you should consider making a wood crate desk , especially if you’re on a budget. It’s a terrific idea since using repurposed crates is inexpensive and doesn’t require too much storage space in your home office.

The good news is that, if you don’t already have them, you can find large wooden crates for free or at a meager cost. These are available in many stores, usually near the produce section of your local supermarket. Just talk to some employees and ask if they have anything old lying around.

You would think that building a cheap office desk out of several crates is complicated. But visit Making Manzanita to check out the intuitive instructions and photos.

4. DIY Farmhouse Corner Desk

DIY Farmhouse Corner Desk

The farmhouse style is quite popular among DIY enthusiasts, so it’s no wonder that many of them have created a unique corner desk with a farmhouse flair.

This design is a fantastic solution for a home office since it allows you to customize the structure and take advantage of two adjacent walls, especially if you want access to plenty of natural light while working on the computer during the day.

For example, if you’re tight on space , you can place the desk against a wall, which will give you extra room for putting together crafts or folding clothes. You don’t need elaborate DIY corner desk plans for this.

Furthermore, if you work with someone else on a regular basis, they can use the desk as an extension of their own computer station by turning it into a home office desk for two.

Our Repurposed Home has prepared a nifty tutorial that demonstrates how to transform two old doors into a DIY L-shaped desk with storage by following straightforward instructions. And, if you need extra storage, you can place a couple of wood creates under the desk.

5. Simple DIY L-Shaped Corner Desk with Top Shelves

Simple diy l shaped corner desk with top shelves

An L-shaped desk is a smart choice for anyone looking to save space and add plenty of storage. It typically takes up less than three feet of floor area, yet it offers work surfaces on both sides and underneath them for printers, scanners, box files, or even baskets.

This particular model features a simple hardwood desk with three L-shaped shelves of the same material and color. The shelves are attached to the wall above the desk, which you can use for extra storage or decoration. We love the built-in look and natural color.

You don’t need a degree in woodworking to make this DIY L-shaped desk . It’s a comfortable project even for beginners since the tutorial from Honey Built Home provides all the necessary measurements and step-by-step instructions.

6. DIY Cheap and Simple Desk

Diy cheap and simple desk

If you’re on a tight budget or simply don’t have enough time for creating an elaborate custom desk, try making this simple model . It looks fantastic and takes up minimal storage space, making it perfect for small-sized apartments.

It’s also easy to customize since you can use different stain colors or paint the finish to match your decor. The desk design is so elementary that it doesn’t feature any drawers, baskets, or other storage space. But we’re sure you can work something out, like installing a cabinet nearby.

There’s no need to create complicated and time-consuming DIY plans for this beautiful desk. Angela Marie Made has shared the required measurements and step-by-step instructions. All you have to do is follow them to craft a simple wooden desk under $45.

7. DIY Floating Desk

Diy floating desk

Many people prefer floating desks because they have more room underneath and don’t bang their feet against wooden or steel legs. And it’s hard to ignore the minimalistic design it brings, especially when paired with a floating shelf made of the same material.

This DIY floating desk is a great solution for home offices because it adds an airy look to the room. Even though there are no legs, the desk sits firmly on the wall since it’s nailed tight. And there’s enough room for a home office desk for two .

The design also makes it easier for you to maintain cleanliness since all you have to do is wipe down the surface after working on your notebook. It’s best to use a clear varnish for preserving the beautiful color of the desk, so it’s worth adding to your list of projects.

Check out the complete instructions for this exquisite model at Within the Grove .

8. Desk Recycled from an Old Door – DIY Door Desk Ideas

Desk Recycled from an Old Door - DIY Door Desk Ideas

Recycling an old door into a reliable desk is the perfect project for anyone looking to add a rustic touch to their home office. This design features an old door attached to a long wooden desk base.

If the door has chippy paint , you can leave it as it is to preserve the natural vintage feel. However, you might be interested in painting the apron and legs to a color that matches your overall decor, like black or white.

Furthermore, it’s necessary to install glass or plexiglass on top of the door (depending on your budget) to even the surface. The desk offers a vast amount of storage space underneath, which is great for keeping printers and other accessories.

If you’re interested in building this DIY door desk to design a French cottage farmhouse home office, head over to Live Oak Nest and look over the intuitive instructions.

9. Butcher Block Study Desk

Diy butcher block desk

How to Build a Desk

How to build a desk

Having a dedicated workspace is important for productivity, but an affordable desk that matches your home office is hard to come by. Here is how you can build a desk easily:

Step 1 : Gather tools and materials

  • A sheet of plywood or MDF board (3/4 x 24 x 48 inches)
  • 4x L brackets
  • Wood screws
  • Tape measure
  • Screwdriver

Step 2 : Take the measurements

Measure and cut down the plywood sheet so that it does not rest on the floor. The top of the desk should be about 36 inches high and 30 inches deep to accommodate a standard chair. Depending on your height, you may need to make adjustments.

In the following step, measure and mark two 33 3/4-inch strips of plywood along the width of the sheet.

Step 3 : Cut the plywood

Cut down the plywood strips using a hack saw. These thin boards will serve as shelf brackets for supporting thin shelves that hold books or other objects found in a typical home office setting.

Step 4 : Drill holes

Drill holes into each shelf bracket using a drill bit suitable for making holes into thin wood; it should be shallow) Space each hole 2 inches from each edge and center it vertically between one another so that they line up when attached to the top of the desk.

Step 5 : Create the back support

Measure and mark a 5-inch strip of plywood that will serve as the desk’s back support for the desk. Cut it down using a saw.

Step 6 : Sand the wood

Sand the surfaces to smooth out the wood. If you’re using thin plywood, you can skip this step.

Step 7 : Assemble the shelf brackets

Assemble the shelf brackets onto the side of your desktop by screwing each one down tightly. Use two screws at each bracket to make everything extra secure.

Step 8 : Add the back support

Screw in the back support piece you cut out earlier at the center bottom – behind where your chair would go. Make sure that these screws are below the area where you plan on placing any books or objects – they will hold them without having to drill extra holes.

Step 9 : Finishing touches

Place the top shelf at a height comfortable for you and fill it up with books or objects of your desire. You can also add an accent piece such as a lamp, plant pot, or something to spruce up the desk’s look.

You’ve just built yourself a stylish and affordable home office desk that would rival those stands sold at IKEA. If you feel ambitious, you can always add other features such as enclosed cabinets and drawers. Have fun personalizing your own workspace.

How to Paint a Desk

How to paint a desk

Here’s how you can easily paint your desk:

Step 1 : Disassemble the desk

Disassemble the desk completely, removing all of its hardware. Place each piece in a Ziploc baggie with a corresponding label that describes where it belongs on the desk.

Step 2 : Sand down any rough surfaces

Use an electric sander to smooth out any rough edges or splinters on your wood pieces.

Step 3 : Clean the surfaces

Wipe down all of your pieces with rubbing alcohol to remove dirt and let them dry. Allow at least 24 hours for drying since you don’t want moisture getting into the joints of your wood while they are still vulnerable. While waiting, make sure everything is labeled correctly.

Step 4 : Paint the desk

Apply several thin coats of paint evenly across all surfaces; be sure that each coat has dried completely before applying the next one. This step will require at least two full cans of spray paint.

Step 5 : Apply polyurethane

Use an applicator or foam brush to apply at least two coats of polyurethane. Be sure that you are applying it evenly across all surfaces for maximum protection. Wait about 15 minutes between each coat, and allow the desk to dry completely before moving on. Pro tip: you can use a blow-dryer set on low heat to speed up the drying process if necessary.

Step 6 : Reassemble your desk

Reattach any hardware you removed, screwing parts together tightly; you may want to tighten them further after allowing time for reassembly. Place your new desk where it belongs, and enjoy your handy work.

How to Organize Your Desk

How to organize your desk

Organizing your desk is an important task because it will determine how much you can accomplish during the day. Your work tools should be easily accessible and your desktop clutter-free.

Besides, it’s also about creating a place where you can focus efficiently on what needs to get done right now. Only then will you be able to maintain a good workflow throughout the day.

Here are some general tips for how to organize your desk :

  • Clean the desk . It seems pretty straightforward, but make sure you go all the way around your desk with a dust rag. It doesn’t take long and will make everything look lovely when you’re done.
  • Hide cords . If you have a desktop computer, you probably have a ton of cords laying around. The good news is that there’s an easy way to hide these cords and keep things looking sharp. Try using wire or cable ties, which can be purchased at most hardware stores for less than $10. This way, you can thread the cables before tying them together in a knot. And it makes it easy to remove cords during cleaning or rearranging.
  • Put everything in place . Discard all unused items and place the ones you need in their place. You can use drawers, bins, and even trays for office supplies, computer devices, toys, and so on. If there’s not enough room on the desk, you can place them on the floor in different configurations.
  • Organize by importance . Arrange items in the most appropriate way, starting with essentials closest to you and ending up with less important things further away. Or, if this doesn’t work for you, just do it chronologically so that you start with what needs to be done first.
  • Go vertical . If there’s insufficient space on your desk, beneath it, or next to it, then vertical space makes the most sense when organizing your desk. Try stacking items vertically in a simple organizer. Or, you can install shelves if you’re facing the wall, which you can also use to keep plants.
  • Reassess the color scheme . You might be surprised by the level of impact that colors have on your productivity. If they’re too loud, they will distract you. So if you want to be productive in a long run, consider changing the color scheme in your workplace for something neutral.
  • Add plants . The right plants not only make your room smell fresh, but they can also make it look great. And this is especially true for small and simple spaces like a home office or a studio apartment. If you don’t have green fingers, consider low-maintenance plants that require little water and won’t need your constant attention.
  • Get rid of distractions . If your computer is acting as a distraction magnet, try getting rid of all unnecessary tabs or minimizing browser windows altogether. Remember that having too many windows open might make you feel overwhelmed.
  • Don’t be afraid to tell people no . Even if you are a fan of multitasking, it might not work for everything, so consider saying no when asked to do something that will take up too much time or energy. It particularly applies to work-from-home individuals who receive calls from friends or family in the middle of the day because they haven’t yet grasped the concept of working from home doesn’t mean procrastinating .

This project has made such a big impact in our home. As with many households around the country, we went from being working parents… to stay-at-home working homeschool parents… overnight. Suddenly, the dining table, island, and any empty surface with a chair was free game for zoom calls, math lessons, and daily science class. Teachers everywhere… I see you, and I appreciate you!

With 4 kids, I’m gotten pretty crafty about creating more functional space in our home. I created an Elfa Office out of a cluttered guest bedroom closet almost 2 years ago and fell in love with the Elfa system.

custom homework desk

The Elfa system is so versatile and easy to install for even the most basic DIYer. I installed this in less than an afternoon so I wanted to show you all the steps to create your own functional office space – no matter what space you have!

The first step (and maybe the most challenging) is deciding the design for your Elfa space. I used graph paper to jot down an initial design and then passed it off to the TCS designers. They will come up with a design and order list for you for FREE! It’s such an amazing service and I can’t recommend it enough.

custom homework desk

Once you order your Elfa system, I like to get everything laid out and organized. In general, only a few tools are required. A stud finder, level, drill, and a pencil. (Hack saw if you are cutting the tracks.)

custom homework desk

This system starts with the Elfa Easy Hang Top track . It is the only thing that is attached to the wall and everything else attaches to that track. I start my installation by marking where the studs are along the wall that I’m working with. This is my all-time favorite “never fails me” stud finder !

custom homework desk

Next I determine how long the top track should be based on your design. They come in 32″ and 80″ lengths so odds are you will have to cut one for your space. Note: when you order – TCS will cut this to size for you! I chose not to do this just so I could show you how to! I usually clamp the piece to something and cut through with a standard hacksaw.

custom homework desk

I used a drill to install the top track into the studs. If the holes in the track fall in spots where there are no studs, you can use the drywall anchors provided by TCS or use a drill bit to drill a hole in the track. I think it’s important to install the track into studs! Make sure you use a level to ensure the track is installed straight.

Elfa system

Here’s a quick video to show the next step… adding the uprights ! They slide in effortlessly from the top of the track and you can move them around freely until you have them in the right spot.

I chose to start installing the drawers from the bottom up so I could make sure my desk height would be accurate. The drawers or shelves will automatically space out your uprights to the appropriate width so no measuring required!

elfa system being installed

Here’s my helper making sure we got just the right height for the desk before we finished hanging all the shelves. I went with the Elfa Decor Desk Top in birch that TCS makes which has a slightly different surface than the Elfa Decor Shelves – perfect for writing on… and keeping clean!

custom homework desk

Things went pretty fast after this. The ventilated shelf brackets slide into the uprights and then you can place the shelf right in those! I used 3 of the 48″ Elfa Decor Desktops (20″ deep) for my desk area and 24″ long Decor Shelves for the rest of the station that are all 12″ deep.

custom homework desk

The Elfa system makes so many options to make your project look finished. These are the White Elfa Bracket Covers and I make sure and use them on any end of an Elfa unit that would have half of the bracket exposed. See below how they finish it off!

custom homework desk

They also make a top track cover that will hide the inside of the top track and holes. These come in 24″ lengths but can easily be cut to size if your shelves are a different size.

custom homework desk

Make sure and pick up a roll of the Standard & Upright Cover to cover the uprights! The roll covers 166″ or 2 standard 84″ uprights.

Once you get your shelves in place, it’s time to organize!

custom homework desk

I used a combination of open baskets and closed storage to make the most out of this area. This is in our main area of our family room basement so my goal was to make it functional for the kids but also tidy and put together.

custom homework desk

These magazine holders and the perfect solution for categorizing their various school books and coloring books. I also love the versatility of the Elfa Utility Boards . There are so many options for hooks and shelves that you can easily keep the work surface clutter-free while having everything at arms reach!

custom homework desk

These little fabric storage bins are the perfect size for small hands. This one holds all the pine cones that my 4-year-old collects on our walks and then paints on during art time. I also picked up 2 of these charging stations for my older ones to keep their devices and headphones charged. I have their cords wrapped up in their drawers for easy access… everything has a home!

custom homework desk

My absolute favorite new storage containers might be these SmartStore Totes . They are mix and match with different inserts and I’ve found so many uses for them! The possibilities are endless with arts and craft storage.

custom homework desk

I am so in love with this new Elfa homework station and just from the few weeks we have had it, I know the kids are too! It has been the perfect spot to corral all the creativity and energy from 4 young kids at home everyday!

Note: The Elfa system is currently 30% off for a limited time!

What space would you create with the Elfa system? Let me know below for a chance to win $200 towards your own Elfa system or organizing supplies!

I would do something similar to this! I absolutely love it. We have 5 kiddos, and a station for all our hands-on activities would be amaaaaazing. And I love your storage files for coloring books and large document boxes for art projects. Love it all!

We recently moved and out of my 3 kids my now 16 year old son hasn’t had his room redone. This system would be great for him for homework and a place to display all his shoes that her personally customized!

I am excited to be a first time mom due in June. I would love to use the Elfa system to create much needed storage in our small nursery. I really love Elfa’s mounted closet door rack. It would be great for all those diapers and wipes we will be undoubtedly going through!

I love this homework station idea! I would use an Elfa system to develop a better work-from-home space in my studio apartment.

I would definitely use the Elfa system to create some open shelves in my kitchen remodel! I love it!

Hi! I’d love to create a “cloffice” and guest bedroom space in our 3rd room in the house. We need a space for my husband to work and a room for our guest to stay.

Always love your feed and inspiration! I would love to get my closet/pocket office organized 🙂

I would do an office in my guest room closet!

I really want to reorganize our play/homeschool room! It has to accommodate ages 0, 2, 6, & 7! It is difficult to find a way to achieve that in a useful, pretty way

I’d love to do an arts and crafts / homework station for my girls! Thank you for all of your details on yours, I’ve loved watching it come together!

I would love to create a desk space for one of my boys in his bedroom!

Our guest bedroom is in serious need of a room makeover!

Looks so good. And I love that the kids can all stay close together and help each other too. I’d do something similar in my office cause I know my kids would love to work with me. Great job!

I would either add some much needed organization to my home office, or kitchen pantry & bathroom closet! ????????

A workstation that I can share with the kids! I can’t stand the clutter they leave but also don’t want to ruin their creativity! Love them all! Your blog posts are very informative and also empowers anyone to do the same :). Keep it coming Jen!

I would do a homework station too! We have a little nook in our hallway. At the moment they put cabinets in it. But I have always thought it would make an amazing home office/work space.

A homework station would be so nice to have with my 7 children. I love, love how this turned out… so pretty, yet functional!

Love this! I have been wanting to do my home office in the Elfa system and has been on my wish list. Love how everything is neat, clean, and organized while looking great.

I have a closet that could really benefit from Elfa! This turned out so great!

Either a home office or study station for my kids!

I would love to organize our master closets with the Elfa system! Funny story…the previous home owners literally put a hole in both of the side walls and rested a rod between them instead of installing a proper clothes hanger. Haven’t gotten around to fixing it yet, so I definitely have my work cut out for me!

I would love this! We have 2 children and our son is going to be school aged this fall! So we are now starting to tackle a spot like this and I am an educator who is doing distant learning for my 25 students in MN and doing his school readiness learning. It’s been fun but I sure do realize we aren’t organized at all! I need a spot for the workbooks, kinetic sand, etc! Love this! Looks so great. I am a big follower of you! Thank you Jennifer!

I love this! It’s so organized and visually appealing. I’ve been wanting to update my master closet to be more functional and adding shelves and drawers would definitely do that!

Love the project! We have our first baby arriving in November so it would be wonderful to get the nursery organized.

I would probably create a space in our basement with our tv & organization for games, and other extra items we keep in the basement. So versatile!

I would love to create a corner desk for my space where a standard desk doesn’t fit, using the Elfa system. The area is a disaster currently, but your post gives me hope of what it could look like! Making this a goal while home with baby #3 on maternity leave.

I would build us an office space so we can have our living back! Haha working from home is not easy when your don’t have a dedicated space. I love the kids space and versatility of this system from the container store! Love that place!

I would love to create in our basement an office/craft area similar to what you do. A space where my husband and I can do work but also a space that we can organize craft supplies for our girls. So that all of us could have a space we can all share.

I’d definitely tackle some kitchen organization!! Oh the horror of the junk drawers!!! ????????

I would love to create an educational learning area for my kiddos. It would be especially helpful with the current remote learning and hybrid schooling we are expecting next year. I love how beautiful this all is!

You did such a great job with this workspace! All of the organization makes my heart so happy. And it’s also so sweet how much your kids appreciate it! Now that I think about it, the Elfa system would totally help organize my outdoor gear collection (tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, camp cookware, lanterns, headlamps, etc). It’s currently all stuffed into a hall closet at the moment, but could really use some love.

I would love a super small version for our daughters homework nook in her bedroom! Would help so much with all the creative creations she makes!

I would redo my closet with the Elfa system

My office!! Working from home means I need to get myself organized!

I would definitely create a space to organize my daughters art and craft supplies!

We would totally mimic the space for my kids to be organized with homeschool. We love this idea and I really believe with a more personalized workspace the kids transition from regular school to homeschool/ distance learning would be a lot smoother than it has been. It would make for a more organized day with less distractions. All of their supplies will be in one place with a spot designated for each one of my three kids. Dreaming of an easier day for us all already ????????

I would reorganize my parents pantry for them. It’s a tall, deep closet and the drawers are old and don’t open easily. The food is so hard to reach because everything gets pushed to the back. I would use the drawers on the bottom like you did and then use the 12” deep shelves to make things easier to reach. My parents are really the best and I want to give back to them and make life a little easier for my mom so I would really love this gift card!!

I would like to finish organizing my home office since I am in school and teaching. I have used a few items from the Container Store and love them. Also, your idea of the boxes for artwork is wonderful.

I would LOVE to redo my loft space with this system! Absolutely ❤️ all your ideas & can’t wait to put mine together

I would make a space like this in my grandbaby room. We are renovating the 1895 homestead of my husband’s grandpa in Iowa, and this would be a great addition!

I love the homework station you created especially with all the distance learning.

I would organize our art and craft supplies. The bins with the divided inserts and lids are game changers. Love them!!

Craft storage in basement closet!

I would build out our homeschool area! Something similar to what you have done here, but for just 2 kiddos! This is so beautiful! It would really help our organization so much since we’re homeschooling for the next few years!

I would love love love to redo my guest room closet with this system to organize my crafts, wrapping and picture station.

This looks awesome. I’d certainly use it to organize all the toys, art supplies and learning tools for my three year olds’ playroom.

A crafting station for my nieces and me!

After moving I have to share a closet with my husband for the first time in years. We need to maximize every last inch of the space

I would love to organize my pantry! I have deep cabinets and the stuff in the back usually gets left behind. Adding some drawer baskets would help.

I would love to create a sewing/crochet area to keep all my crafting supplies organized!

I puked definitely use this system and some organization containers in my office. It is currently used as an office, sewing and craft room AND guest bedroom…. YIKES! It’s a small space that can really use some help being more organized. I would love to add a system in there like this one. You did a great job, it looks wonderful and so functional!

Totally meant to say “could” use!

I would love to do a craft area like this❤️❤️ We are building a new house and it would be perfect.

I would create a new office/craft space. Something that allows for storage and room to work on any project. We have a small home and to make it work for an extended period of time, we need to make the most of every square inch. Especially if we ever need to make our guest room aka storage room 🙂 a nursery!

I am looking for ways to create an at-home office for us and the kids to use in our newly finished basement. Everything is all over the place right now

I’ve been wanting to redo our home office which is also the room with my closet. This would help so much to organize the office and keep it a designated area away from closet related stuff. Also, this would help especially since my husband is at home working now too and we would love to include a little spot for our little girl as she grows.

I would organize our pantry! We moved into our new home back in February, and the pantry needs some serious work. We need to maximize the space and also make it so we can see everything!

I am moving into a new town house and need to organize my craft space into a closet, this would be perfect!! I know I need a combination of drawers and shelves, but the back where I can hang specific tools will be a great addition!

Would love to organize my closet and my daughters closet as well! To have everything in order before I give birth in the fall

This is awesome! I’d love to use it in the garage to create better storage in there.

In love with all aspects of this space! You’ve thought of it all and TCS has all the best things for organizing any space. Makes me want to go through all of my stuff and find some type of storage container for it! Thanks for bringing us all along!

Would love to organize my laundry room further. We installed the elfa system and love it, but didn’t complete the organization with boxes and such; I am dying to do that!

The Container Store is like an adult playground. Love seeing what you’ve done with the place and am encouraged to know that being tidy doesn’t come naturally to you either. There is hope for me yet!

Love this!!!! I have four kids as well in the same age range as yours! I would organize our schoolroom/playroom with all the lovely things! I love how you made it functional AND made it look beautiful!

Need some serious help with organizing my overflow pantry and buffet area

I would love to redo our small bedroom turned office for 2 now that my husband and I both need workspace from home. The organization of the Elfa system is awesome!!

Oops, I forgot to specify what I’d do. I would organize my basement and make it much more functional and inviting. Then maybe I’d go down there to workout and do laundry more often. 😉

With all of my kids home, doing distance learning,I’d love to create an office/homework space for them. This looks perfect!

it’s condo living for us so many of our rooms and closets have many purposes. using organization pieces from the container store would be a game changer for us! you’ve given us so much inspiration.

Yesss! Love this desk space and would totally put this to good use. With being home now during this crazy time I am craving organization!

I have couple spaces that need some sprucing up… Craft room for sure, and the play room. The container store does it right! You made some great design choices here!

Redo a laundry area with a folding station at the correct height (and a built-in, retractable ironing board which I just got), and storage for detergents etc. Would be so nice to use Elfa instead of building my own which was my original plan. Rethinking that!

Only issue is that the track would have to be installed on a white brick wall, making mounting a bit more involved but I’ve worked with that before with my trusty hammer drill and deep anchors. So… thinking an Elfa set-up could work really well!

what a great idea, Kate! one side of my entire house is brick, I’m so nervous to mount anything on it, any advice? Thanks!

Heaven on earth would be an organized master closet. Currently have builder grade wire racks and have been saving up for a modular system we can customize to our needs. Feeling so inspired by this post and love the potential my space has.

I would reorganize our playroom closet and all of the gear for my little nugget.

My girls and I love arts and crafts. I also run an in home daycare! Needless to say we have stuff everywhere without it being super organized! This would finally help give everything a home! Love the way yours turned out!!!

My closet needs a name over but now that I have to work from home the elfa system seems like making a home office in a closet and doubling and a make up station would be so much fun.

I’m considering this for our laundry room and also my daughter’s workspace. She already has a desk but the vertical space above it is crying for this system, especially the pegboards.

A school station for my kids. Would love for our school area to be that organized!

Would be so nice in the home office or to organize the backs of several doors

An organized pantry!!! Everyone wants food all throughout the day. We dont have wall space for a homework station, but an organized pantry may just save my sanity. Love how it turned out Jen!

With 2 kids doing distant learning and; being in the frontline as nurses, my husband and I need our own space for our online classes as well. This will be a nice addition in our huge walk in closet that is bare right now.

I’ve been waiting so patiently for this post! I’d recreate this with $200! Love how it turned out. Homeschool has been hard and a little organization always makes things better.

What an amazing article and great job highlighting each aspect both small and big. My husband and I just bought our first home and it’s a row-house so space/storage is quite limited. We had to get creative and used some dead space in the walls to create a coat rack by our front door and hidden storage between the studs in the kitchen for things like the broom/swiffer. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I can’t do that in every single room and because we don’t have the luxury of separating office spaces and my craft supplies, the Elfa system would solve a lot of those problems! The organization and simplicity it brings, makes us feel like we’d be at peace knowing everything has its own space and we can still move things around if we need a small change to feed our design itch. Thank you for this opportunity and love your work!

I’m in grad school and will be working/taking classes remotely this summer and next fall. I’d use the money to organize my school work and create a beautiful desk area to work from home!

I love it! I would organize a closet!

I would love to redo my son’s desk area in his room to allow it to transition from tween to teenager.

Great article! Your directions were very precise, very clear, and doable for a beginner. We just bought an 80 year old farmhouse & honestly, I could use this system in every single room. I think pantry might be first. Followed by master closet, craft room, home office, and laundry room. ????????????

We are a homeschool family and building a new house. I would use it to work on our homeschool space in the new loft. I’m so excited to get it all organized.

Omg I love love love what you have done with this space! I would get a bunch of those smart store totes!! I love them so much! I’ve pretty much avoided paints, playdough, and all forms of arts and crafts because I have never been able to figure out how to organize it all effeciently! But this is it! It’s going to be life changing! Question though, I dont see those little containers you put the modeling clay in in your stories. Where do I find those?

I would love to create this in our basement. Having a designated work/homework space would remove the paperwork every where else!

I need to organize my guest bedroom…..Both the closet and the actual room. It could be so clean and organized with your tips and suggestions!

I would love to redo the office/homeschool/guest room. So much chaos with everything going on.

I would love to add some functionality to my closet!

I’d redo my RV closet that came with no organization other than a rod.

I’m dying to get an Elfa system for my garage so I can start building my tools and DIY collection!

This looks so amazing! It is perfect for homeschooling! Totally gonna look into this!

An office space for myself as we’re not sure when we’ll be heading back to school (I’m a teacher).

I would do the same thing! Such a great idea and space for the kids that is functional and looks great!

I would try to make it work in our playroom or office! So many possibilities with organizing!

Moving into a new house in August and for the first time ever we will have a pantry! No more squishing all of our food in and on top of cabinets. So excited, but want to make sure we really set it up right so that it’s extremely functional.

Love love this post! Planning to organize the craft and HW area for kids at my house too!

I LOVE the way this came out!!! I have been dying to organize my office and would greatly appreciate the opportunity to do so! I’m starting my Masters of Education program this summer and my office makes me feel uninspired…. This would help me to rejuvenate it!

My office/sewing room!

I would give my two sons functional closets. Right now because they are so young, everything is in a dresser. But with growing boys (and growing amounts of books and toys), we need a functional place to store everything!

I’m totally in for a kids work station!! We have our boys at a folding table, works ok, but after seeing your spot we need to upgrade! Love what you pulled together!

This is such a beautiful space!! My husband and I have both started working from home lately and have no home office – currently both at our kitchen table! This would be a great addition for a double home office with so many organization options!

I have an elfa system in my master closet and would love to change it up a bit! That’s the best part – it’s totally customizable depending on your needs. This homework station is awesome! I wish I had something like this in school.

I would update our disfunctional and ugly laundry room with an Elfa system!

I would LOVE to do something like this for my craft space! Right now, I use a table and cardboard boxes as ‘storage crates’ but it is not super functional.

I would create wall storage and display space beside my kitchen/dining area to put out my collection of measuring cups and vintage dishes.

I would definitely utilize the elfa system to create my own beautiful and organized crafting station! Most days there just isn’t enough time to finish projects in one sitting and I’m tired of taking over the dining room table with my mess just to have to clean it all up before dinner! This would be so helpful to organize supplies and keep things in a designated spot!

I would definitely upgrade and organize our Master Closet! It has some shelving in there but it is hung at awkward heights which make it impossible to hand more than one row of clothes! With my fiancé and I using it together, it really limits the space & usability!

My gear closet is a disaster zone right now but Elfa would be the perfect way to organize it!

I would totally work on updating my office storage situation! I don’t have room for a whole new system but I would purchase all the stylish and functional office storage pieces to keep my little business and kids craft supplies better kept! Your tutorials and style is always awesome! Love how this space turned out!

I would use this in our garage loft. My husband and I are going to share the space for his area and my crafting area! This would be a huge awesome organization tool for us! It would be a perfect way to help finish off this area of our home.

I should say a child’s homework station…but I’m not! ???? I want my own office / craft station just like what you did for your kiddos!!!

I would a set up like the one you have but unfortunately I don’t have the space for it. So I would try to work with what I have and organize it to be convenient for my kiddos 🙂

I love this so much!! Also, I’m a fellow diy-er and love to learn new things from you!! You have so many great tricks to make things simple! I’m PROMISE I’m not trying to butter you up, it’s the truth. Lol. My biggest organization problem is my PANTRY!!???? Plus, the boxes you showed us are AMAZING!! I have to get some of those regardless if I’m chosen. Those are just too good!!????????????

I’m a seamstress for work and I need a better set up, your post has me itching for a desk system like this!

I love this!! I change my answer from my comment on your IG post because I think I would do a whole Elfa system for our pantry!! I would love it! Nothing would make me happier than a super organized pantry ha!

I would like to reorganize my “decorating” closet/Pantry.

Our boy’s den. We have so many little things thrown in drawers and I would love for them to have a proper home!

We were also thrown in to homeschooling life. We converted our office to a “school room.” I had previously looked in to getting built-ins, but they are SO pricey! With your inspiration I would totally do something like this! It would be so useful for organization, and a dedicated homework space even after the kiddos are back in school.

I still think my pantry is the most likely to get organized first (baby steps in organizing my life), but the kids toys need homes too! I can use all the organizing help I can get!

My pantry and fridge! Living in a tiny rental is hard to do anything too permanent but those spaces always need improvements.

Just found out I’ll be working from home through the end of the year and likely permanent. Currently I don’t even have a desk! This would be so helpful to create my new working space that’s not so temporary!

Love this, it’s gorgeous! I’d do something very similar in our new daughters room. She will need a good learning space for practicing English!

I just found out I’ll be working from home through the end of the year and most likely permanently! I don’t even have a desk currently, so this system would help me create my “not so temporary” working space!

I have a hall closet that stores half bathroom and half craft supplies. I would love to get the right storage containers in there

Love the homework station you made! I am moving in June so I would use the money to organize our new home!

We just renovated our bedroom and I’m getting my first ever closet! I’m so excited because I’ve been living out of plastics totes for 14 years! Could really use this to purchase organization for our walk in closet!!

Our guest bedroom is being converted to office/guest room to make room for a nursery 🙂 We could use Elfa to help with the transition!

Oh, this would be a dream come true!! I love the simplicity and the easy of changing things around as needs change. With homeschooling 5 kiddos, this would be very loved and used all day long in our home

I would love to create a more beautiful and more efficient work space for my twin daughters, who are 9, to do their schoolwork…especially since schooling at home will most likely continue into the fall here in CA.

This is aaaaamazing!! I would love to create a Lego station for my son to organize all those dang little pieces and give him a place to display his creations!

I would love to flip a wide space I have neglected while homeschooling my four kids. You should see it! I currently have two cheap white desks with cube storage housing my sewing machine on one side, and my unopened Cricut Maker on the other side. A piece of scrap bead board connects the two. All temporary, just two years temporary! ????

I want to makeover my son’s desk area and add some upper shelves for his treasures and lego creations! He’s got a small space and a chair rail around the room that make it tricky but I love that the Elfa system can be customized and adjusted to fit anywhere!! I’m debating between all white or white and birch like you did here. Thanks for the inspo! Consider me INFLUENCED ????

This is so inspiring. I would do a homework station for my kids.

I would probably do the exact same work space for my kids!! ????. But you know, one project I would LOVE to do using the Elfa system (I love this system, I have it in my closets and pantry) is to do a “gift wrapping station” in one of my closets. I’ve always dreamed of doing it and have just never gotten it done!

I would love to make a space for me to work and an area for my kids to do crafts etc.

Love this idea for a shared office for my husband and me. We are like the odd couple one neat and one messy. Think this would help us both meet in the middle.

So, so many papers, arts and crafts at my house with 4 kiddos. I’d also love to set up a desk/work station for my kids. I am so glad you included the length of your space for your set up.

I would create a craft station and I would be in absolute heaven!!! (I also have 4 kids and I need to hide somewhere lol)

I would use a system like this in my eleven year old’s room. He could use a desk type of area with storage like this. Thanks for putting all the info/steps into a bog post for us!

I turned my master closet into an office space and I think the elfa system would work perfect in there!

You thought of everything with this homework station. It’s so inspiring and feels like a doable DIY for me. Thanks for sharing!

Home craft/office space!! We have a small room we don’t know what to do and I feel the elfa system would be ideal!

Love how it turned out! So functional and an efficient use of space. The Elfa system would be perfect for our home office too!!

I would love a home office! The guest bedroom is currently setup for temporary work from home, but as the current situation persists, I’d love to make a permanent office!

Love love love this! Love that you only install the top and the design is on point. The accessories are beautiful organizers too! Cheers!

I Love all things container store. Right now I’m working on making our basement functional. Id love to make a kids/ craft/computer desk.

Looks awesome and so easy! We are hoping to find a new house soon, expecting baby #2 AND seem to have endlessly growing amount of toys, craft supplies etc for my 2 year old. Would absolutely use $$ to organize the arts and craft stuff, and maybe help spruce up closet/storage options with some elfa support!

Ahh love this!!! I would love to kickstart organization of my home office. It tends to be the spot that all the junk gathers ???? I could use a system to get it into shape! ????????

Love this! Would love to organize all my DIY tools and materials in a similar way!

We just moved into a new house and my number 1 goal was to keep things organized! I have failed miserably. Our extra bedroom is currently a catch all. We have a four year old and 1.5 year old so nothing is safe. We need things they cannot get into! Thanks! Love watching you and your projects! Gives me inspiration 🙂

I would love to transform our bedroom closet.

My tiny unorganized office space and maybe closet space! These rock!

Our front room closet could really use a reorg – original cedar lined deep, square coat closet that is definitely not maximizing the space ????

My office ???? thanks for the giveaway

I would make a crafting station the whole family can utilize!

I think this would be perfect for a closet turned office type situation. Compact, adjustable, easy to set up, and beautiful. And when you no longer need the office and you want your closet back, turn it back into a prettier and more organized closet than you started with!

I think would actually create a similar desk system. We have a wall where we planned to add built-in’s, but this could be a good first solution.

A craft station for my kids!!

Organizers are my favorite and seeing how you make them pretty on top of functional is awesome!!

This is one of my favourite projects that you’ve done, looks so amazing! I need a dedicated work space for the kids so we can get our dining table back!

I would redo our master closet and call closet! Thanks for showing us all how easy this is.

I would love to better utilize the space on my closet. We moved from a house with 3 huge, master closets to a house with one tiny one. It’s an adjustment for sure!

We are just about ready to start designing an office/library room and we need lots of shelving and organizing items! I love the look of the magazine holders on the shelves and think some of the elements you used would be so great in our new space.

I’ve GOT to organize my one-car garage that has my laundry space. So many projects, so little space. It would be much more functional and efficient if the laundry area was organized with a legitimate system like elfa or similar

I would love to organize our kitchen! Specifically our spices/baking section. We just moved into our first home and are trying to stay organized to keep our sanity but it’s been a challenge with all of our other projects going on!

I’d love to also create a homework/craft station for my kids! Especially given the SIP orders, it would be nice to have a dedicated area that’s nice to look at and functional. Thanks for the inspiration!

Honestly I would dream of a work space like that for kids like that one day! It’s gorgeous and just as functional

This would be awesome to have.. 4 school aged kiddos and a new baby.. I need all the organizations help..

Love this! I would create a much needed home office! Right now I’m posted up at my kitchen island and it’s not workin so hot! ????

I would create a beautifully organized craft station. It’s so important to be able to see what you have, so why not display it in a smart and beautiful way? The Elfa system would be perfect for this! Thank you for the inspiration!

I would make an art/craft/homework station in our basement. It is just a big room with no system. Right now we use it mostly for storage.

I would use it in my craft/art space that desperately needs organization.

I would love to help my daughter organize her new, very small, apartment! She is working from home a lot lately & needs some help. The ELFA system looks like it would do the job 😉

I would organize our newly created office space! The office in the mechanical room just isn’t cutting it!

I would use it to organize my kitchen cabinets and under the sink!

We would organize our home office since we are both working from home now and for awhile! Also my daughters playroom

We would organize our home office since my husband and I are both working from home now and for at least a couple more months. Also my daughters playroom!

Home office/mail sorting and filing station. It’s always an issue at my house

I knew the Elfa system was awesome for closets and pantries but I had no idea it could be so pretty for things like this homework station. I would LOVE to add some function to my master closet!

I would love to extend my love of creativity and learn to sew! I have a dumping ground/office which is not very usable because of everything piled up. I would love to create a creative oasis for all things crafts and then extend out to sewing once I have the proper space! Then I would love to teach my daughter XO

I would love to do my closet! I have an older home with tiny closets so it would be so helpful to get an Elfa system!

I love how this turned out! The bins for craft supplies are so cool! I would totally want to tackle my pantry or my guest room/craft area!

I would love to reorganize my pantry! Throw everything out that I currently have and start from scratch!! Would feel so good!

My laundry room needs some WORK!! Seriously it’s embarrassing…

This would be a dream come true for our basement for our 3 kids! Especially now with homeschooling! Love your work and loved watching this project come to life!

We are currently in the process of downsizing, getting ready to sell our house and build a smaller pole barn home. This system would be so functional in so many spots in our new home. Pantry, clothes closets, desk area in living room….Thanks so much for your informative blog and instagram posts. I can’t wait to try some of your projects myself.

I’m dying to redo my closet! It needs some desperate diy organization!

We have these built in book cases from The previous home owner that were done very sloppy… I told my husband I’d love to tear them out and do 2 desk spaces for my kiddos with shelving for school and artwork supplies etc… I would definitely do something similiar, love it!

I want to make a closet office just like yours! Then our guest room would have more space.

I’d call it a craft station for my 7 kids, but they’ll probably call it a lego station! ????

I absolutely LOVE what you did here for your kids homework station! We recently bought a new desk for our office space since both my husband and I are WFH now and I have yet to organize the rest of the office! Love everything the container store has so will definitely be looking into getting some organizational items for there to help it all come together????

I would do something very similar but for one kid! Love it all! Thank you for sharing!!

I would organize my office and office closet. That has turned into just piles of paper work and crafts. Your kids homework area is a dream !

We just moved into a new house. Our old house had a lot of built in storage and our new house has none! ????????‍♀️ Thus, we’ve been slowly unpacking as we figure out storage solutions! ???? In fact, it there is some wasted space in the half bath and laundry room which could use storage ASAP! ????

I would love to redo our tiny master closet. With all my husband’s gear and uniforms we definitely need a better system!

My master closet could use some serious help!! I love this homework station! I only have a toddler now so have no use for it but it looks amazing and functional!

Now that I’m working from home I would definitely create a home office! I’m currently doing all of my work on the dining room table lol

You have inspired me to keep my elfa shelves and rework my office!! It needs a lot of love!

Totally didn’t get my email right before! Would definitely be redoing my office, it needs a lot of love????????

A bedroom homework/study area I think would be really cool!

My kids arts and crafts supplies. We have an IKEA cart we use with supplies but it’s impossible to keep organized with a toddler and preschooler. It’s glitter and googly eyes everywhere because when they reach in for one things the other items often topple. Help!

I need Elfa help in my soon to be teenage girl’s closet. It is a “reach in” closet and poor girl has no space for anything. All she sees is what is right in front of her – everything else disappears in the sides behind the wall. ????????‍♀️

The Pantry!!!!!

Such a creative way to organize! Would love to turn my spare room into a office since my Husband is working from home. For now he will use our tv stand as a desk. ????

Is love to get my kitchen cabinets organized! We don’t have a pantry – so our cabinets are super full!

I have a basement reno going on right now. (brought on by a major water leak from somewhere??????just pulled up the last of wet carpet.) I have been following you closely as I have been making decisions. I have THE perfect space for this system to house my 2 children’s homeschool stuff. Love it. Function at its finest✅

My garage! It still needs so much help!!

A home office!! We’re working remotely for an undefined anount of time and this mama needs a more creative, productive space.

Toss up either a new office area for my husband or our 11 yr old would like her closet overhauled

I would love to do a smaller version of this work station in my daughter’s bedroom AND overhaul her closet. Maybe it would encourage her to put everything in it’s place?!????????‍♀️ It would certainly give her more space and organization for her school work and art supplies!

Our den! I recently sold our desk because it was just a surface for junk, but now I need a place for storing old photos and files.

I just built a closet under our stairs and it is an empty shell. I’d love to add some sweet Elfa organization in there!

Love all this organization! My girls playroom craft table turned my office needs a little ❤️

I’d love to create an organized homework/activity area for my kids.

Beautiful space!

I have a drop off zone that needs an organization system

I would make a similar desk in my apartment! I’m in medical school and live with my so who works from home so it would be great to have this to as we study/work from home together!

I would crest a craft closet in my home office with this system. It looks great in your house and I’m sure it’s super functional.

I have a lot of options as many areas need some organization! Maybe get my husband’s work off of the dining room table? Or maybe some closet organizing?

I am an Interior Architecture and Design student with a three year old, so I would use this for my actual design/ rendering /homework/ project area (a space for me since my whole house she has taken over)!

I would redo our guest room which is an empty space, hopefully soon to be a child’s room

We are in the process of moving into our new home. I have been researching for WEEKS on how to optimize our pantry space!

I would love to do a homework station for my two boys. Right now they are doing their homeschool on dinner or foldaway table. I believe that having their designated work space will improve their work habits.

My office/guest room/music room is an absolute disaster and in DESPERATE need of some organization! It’s also the first room you walk into from the garage, so being able to see an organized space instead of sheer chaos the moment we walk into the house would be an absolute dream!

Awesome! I need to do this in my office soooo badly!

I am building an art business from home and currently have no dedicated studio space. I would use this system to carve out a space to work (that isn’t my dining table!) and store supplies out of reach of my toddler.

I would definitely do a homework station too. I may be homeschooling my kids in the fall and this would be amazing!!

I would Redo my boys room! Who share a room ???? maximize space!!! ????????‍♀️

I love this homework station! We have a tricky master closet that I would LOVE to take with the Elfa system. It looks incredibly simple and versatile. You did a killer job!

I would redo our loft to make it a functional office/play space! Right now it’s just a space for toys that rarely gets used. There is so much potential and you are giving me so many creative ideas!

I would add more organization to my craft space or pantry organization!

I would makeover my sewing and craft room with the Elfa system!

My husband’s closet! It’s a reach-in closet, and we used Elfa in a reach-in closet for our nursery 2 houses ago and loved it so much.

Both your areas are awesome and inspiring. I’ve known this was an option but it always seemed overwhelming. This post helps demystify it a little! We recently moved my “office” from a spot in our unfinished basement storage room/playroom (aka concrete cave), to a corner of my daughter’s bedroom. Now that I’ve gotten her moved to another bedroom, it’s time to get an actual office setup for the first time ever. I’ve got a lot of stuff, like 3 monitors for example, so a design your own system like this is basically my knight in shining armor!

I would love to organize a sewing room/bunk room that we are currently building in our basement! Half of the room will be for sewing and the outer parts of the room will have murphy bunk beds for when we host our large family!

I would organize my spare room or the tack room at the horse barn!

Definitely another work station & then closets! We now have 5 people going to school & working from home! Ella is great! Used for extra hall closet storage.

I’d love to create my own workspace! I’m currently in that stage where I work a wherever, but that means I’m always having to pick it up and move it.

I can’t wait to redo our office and hallway closet. It’s been our wedding storage room and I need to organize it all asap. Quarantine has us buying everything off our registry pre-wedding trying to organize everything while we have the time.

Kids closets for sure!!

Would love to upgrade our arts and crafts area too! Love these ideas and the organization! Such a gorgeous space!

Totally redo our master closet! ????

I would love this in the laundry room/pantry. It’s super tiny so this would help with pantry, cleaning supplies, tools, off season coats/boots/gloves.

Please! Home office/homeschool room!!! I’m DYING!

I would organize our playroom!

Your space is perfect! This homework station is definitely on my list but first I have an empty corner space in my kitchen that I want to put these shelves for my produce. Right now I have several containers and baskets that don’t even match al hanging out on my counter and I’d love to move them to shelves that look classy and put together purposefully.

Our in-progress kitchen storage! We had two huge, awkward sliding door closets in the kitchen that I’m working on converting to a cute and functional coffee nook, open pantry and recycling/trash center.

I’ve lived in my house for 20 years, the majority of the time as a single mom. I’ve always wanted to have a beautiful closet system but never seemed to have the money for it. I’d definitely use the Elfa system to finally get my dream closet.

I love your homework station and I would love to create the same thing, a homework/craft station in an extra bedroom upstairs. If I could corral everything in one place it would feel so good. 🙂

Just found out my stepdaughters may need to be homeschooled by me until JANUARY. Gulp! I would definitely use the money to organize each of their work spaces – they’re so excited about their own rooms in our new house for the first time.

I’ve been needing to organize our office for 5 years and now that I’m working from home I am motivated. Your makeover has really inspired me and I’m so grateful you shared your space. Thank you!

I would do a shoe closet! ???????? My shoes still haven’t been unpacked since we moved into our home 3 years ago

I am hoping to move from the hospital to working from home as a nurse. This would be great to build a small office area ????

I am about to start a huge renovation project in my new (old) home and I have realized during this stay at home time that I need a real home office! I would create a home office that is functional and beautiful.

We would work in our garage!

Love love love how this turned out! I’d love to create a space similar to this in our upstairs loft for my husband to work from home and eventually my littles to do homework! Until then a place for me to craft ????

I would create an actual desk area in our office space. Currently, it’s just a catch-all storage space of …. stuff! Old toys, random furniture pieces.

Definitely an area for my kids to do crafts!

I just installed an elfa system in my master closet, it is amazing! My next task is to organize my craft closet, it is beyond a mess at the moment! ????

This is incredible! Love it! I also have 4 kids and this set up seems like a winner!! I love watching your stories – you make these diy projects seem a little over-whelming!!

This is amazing! I would create a functional open shelving/office space in our small condo! Our first babe is due in July and our office is now a nursery 🙂

Thank you for the wonderful tutorial! You made a very beautiful and organized space for your kids! My husband and I just bought our first home together and we have a lot of organizing left to do. We don’t have any furniture for our office yet (besides a few folding tables) so I would love to use an Elfa system for creating a desk space to organize our supplies. We’ve moved in 2 months ago and still haven’t unpacked our office supplies!

I want to create a workspace in our spare room. Working from home without a desk has been hard. This would make my quarantine life so much easier !!

I love your space so much, I would have to do something very similar for my craft space!

Definitely a work station. We have a smaller nook in our master bedroom that is perfect for it.

I am trying to revamp my laundry/kitchen area and could totally use this to make laundry storage supplies a little more fun or to tidy up pantry space!

This looks so amazing!!! I would love to use this in my guest closet which currently hoards all things craft, decor and present wrapping! ???? would love to get this area organized and more functional as well as still be able to be used for guests when they stay…all while looking cute of course ????

Love this! I would use a system like this to create a home office nook, since I’ll be working from home for a while!

I just graduated college and had to put off moving due to covid. I’d hope to put this money to use for organizing around the house once we get there!

Im going for an office/ homework space. We’re moving from almost 3,000 sq ft to a 1200 sq ft shot gun house. The house has beautiful wide hallways with beadboard and 11′ ceilings. Its the only place we can fit in some much needed function. The Elfa system would be perfect for creating an office space in that area with minimal damage to the original beadboard walls.

I just moved into a new apartment and would love to create a space-saving Elfa work space in my living room! Absolutely love all the storage container ideas you’ve shared with us!

I would install this in my Laundry Room/Home Office space. Organization makes even small spaces so much more efficient as well as more eye appealing!! I’ve wanted to try the Elfa System so I hope I win!!!

I would love to organize all of our art supplies and photos with these containers. We are moving, so it would be helpful to have something like this to keep it all together. Once we move into our dream home, I would love to create a space like this.

We are moving soon out of our tiny apartment and will have a nice big rec room downstairs. I would create a space similar to yours for my two preteens to do their homework and art!

I would do a small desk area in my bedroom and get 2 main closets organized! Love the inspiration you give!

Thank you for writing this blog post with all the details! I loved following along in stories and watching this come together. I have an empty corner of my bedroom that is perfect for an Elfa office space. Thanks for the inspiration!

We have a bonus room upstairs with a sloped ceiling, so I would use this system with low shelves and desks stretched out over a long wall for a homework/crafts area for my kiddos! I love your site and IG so much.
