Talking about companies, here's what our members are saying....

There are a lot of resources that are useful for teaching English. I downloaded the games which are handy and use them in my classes. With the games, my students never skip class or feel tired to learn English. The resources for teaching English helped my students progress in grammar, vocabulary, writing and comprehension. They also helped me a lot to guide my students to learn in a practical way.

I am an ESOL teacher, and the resources have helped my classes enormously. In particular, the speaking activities were a great help for my intermediate students before their exam. The website is user-friendly, and I will continue to utilise the resources - next term is reading and comprehension, so I will be looking for more resources from you. Thank you for such helpful activities and worksheets. They save me a lot of time in class preparation.

Teach This is an absolutely brilliant website, offering a vast amount of high-quality content, much of it free. Everyone involved in its creation deserves commendation. The leadership's vision has my deepest respect and gratitude. It's undoubtedly the best resource for English teachers, with its clear layout, easy navigation, concise messaging, and lack of invasive advertising - rare qualities that Teach This has perfected.

When I need to add or change an activity from my school’s curriculum, I always turn to TeachThis. While our curriculum is usually very good, it sometimes doesn’t fit well with my students. With TeachThis, I can easily find activities that match my topic and level, and the resources make my classes more interesting and varied. I look forward to the monthly newsletter and exploring new materials for inspiration. Please keep it up!

I like the efficiency and organization of the website. The resources cater to various levels with topic-based options for higher levels. The worksheets are very engaging and the answer keys are particularly helpful for teacher. The resources are also highly specific to levels and outcomes, making planning much easier. Finding what I need is simple and time-saving with the keyword search feature. Everything is clear and straightforward.

The easy and ready-to-go materials have helped me a lot during the last few years. Most of all I like the grammar games that activate my pupils and keep them engaged. My lessons have become way more playful and varied. Additionally, I like the grammar worksheets which I use to consolidate what I have worked on during class. The website is very user-friendly, and I have never had any difficulties finding what I was looking for.

A friend told me about the site, and it's awesome. I have found the Business English resources especially engaging and relevant for my students as the materials help them understand business writing and terms. My teaching experience has also improved from using the games on the site as they allow me to teach in a fun way. The user experience is outstanding. Great job!

I found Teach-This a long time ago when I started teaching. It's always had great resources. I really appreciate the grammar materials, board games, and group activities. They've saved me lots of time on lesson planning. The materials are easy to use and understand, making my job much simpler. The best thing is that many resources can be downloaded for free. I've used it for around 8 years, and it consistently offers great content.

I use the resources from the Games Section as part of my daily 30-minute morning warm-up activities, and I've received rave reviews for using them. The games help me maintain student interest and participation and leave the students feeling happy and awake. I like everything about the site, and customer support is very effective as they respond in time.

Teach-This is one of the best EFL websites I've found. It's extremely user-friendly, and I always find what I need quickly. I like the design, and the content is fun, engaging and original. I am very thankful for all your work and generosity by making some resources free. I always recommend this website to my fellow teachers. Your work is really helpful, and I value it enormously.

I like the grammar-focused resources the most as they save me time. The resources also inspire me. If I see an interesting grammar activity, I often rework it for other grammar rules. I like the fact that I simply pay a flat fee, and I can download whatever I want. Teach-This really is a great timesaver. I know that if I am in need of resources for my students, I can go to Teach-This and find something interesting.

Getting familiar with the site and how to use the resources is not difficult. I found the writing skills resources to be the most valuable as they have enhanced my teaching of this skill. The website is elaborate and full of all types of resources to help me teach English. When I contacted customer support, they were super-fast to deal with my enquiry. So overall, I recommend it.

I have found the grammar and vocabulary resources the most valuable. They have improved my teaching experience because they are easy to use and well-organized. The materials are very engaging for my students. The website is also very user-friendly. The best thing about Teach-This is that it offers ready-made worksheets for busy teachers, and the content is well-organized and full of information.

I'm really glad I found the Teach-This website. The materials in the General English section have proven to be really helpful and made my classes more engaging. I am now less stressed about preparing for classes as the ready-made resources offer me everything I need. I give the site five out of five for user-friendliness. It is very easy to navigate and find what I need.

I would like to thank you for making a fantastic website. I particularly enjoy teaching the functional language materials, which have been very helpful in my classes. Preparation

1. read the task and the essay. are the sentences true (t) or false (f).

1   Sarah wants a sound system because she hasn’t got anything for listening to music.

2   Her brother loves football.

3   She’d give money to an organisation that helps homeless people.

4   She’d spend most of the money.

If you won €1 million in the lottery, what would you do with it? Write an essay and include your ideas. Give reasons for your choices.

If I won €1 million, there are a lot of things I would like to do with the money. It would be nice to buy myself something, but it would also be good to help others.

First of all, I would buy myself a docking station with fantastic speakers. Although I have got an MP3 player and some speakers, they are not very good.

Secondly, I would buy a new car for my mum. Her car is really old. I would buy my brother a Liverpool kit and a scarf. He is a really big Liverpool fan!

Thirdly, there are a lot of homeless people in my city. I would donate money to the local hostel. If I gave them €5,000, they could buy a lot of meals for homeless people.

Finally, I would save at least half of the money. In my opinion, it would be silly to spend it all now. What is more, if I invested the money, it would grow, and I would have more to spend in the future.

To sum up, I would buy something nice for myself and other members of my family, support local charities, and also save some money for the future.

–  use concession clauses ( although … / even though … ) at the beginning or end of a sentence.

2. Read the Writing Strategy. Then underline the following in the essay:

1   one concession clause (starting with Even though, although, etc.)

2   three second conditional sentences (with an if clause and a main clause).

3   one phrase for introducing an opinion.

4   four phrases for listing four points.

5   one phrase for introducing an additional point.

1   although I’ve got an MP3 player …

2   If I gave them €5,000, they could buy …;

My town is very historic and we get a lot of visitors. There are several things I would improve to attract even more tourists. Here are three of the most important.

First of all, I would improve the parking. In my opinion, this is the most important thing because the town is always full of cars. If there was a car park on the edge of town, tourists could leave their cars there and get a bus into the centre. It would be easier for them and they could enjoy less crowded streets.

Secondly, I would cut the entrance price to museums and art galleries. The tickets can be very expensive, especially for families. If prices were cheaper, more tourists would visit these attractions.

Finally, I would arrange some interesting things for children to do in the park. If there were more activities for children, more families would come to the town.

To conclude, I would improve parking, reduce prices and provide things for children to do. All these things would attract more tourists to our town.

2. Write your essay.

Your town or a town near you is a tourist destination. What improvements would you make to attract even more tourists? Write an essay and include three ideas. Give reasons for your choices and say what effect the improvements would have on tourist numbers.

Include these points:

–  say what the most important improvement would be

–  choose two more improvements to make

–  explain how these things would affect tourists.

The main reason for writing ESL Essay is practice. As people say – practice makes perfect and they are not wrong. Because the only way you can make something good is to do it over and over again. While learning English most people usually think only about their conversational skills and I understand them. When you are learning a foreign language your biggest desire is to start speaking it as soon as possible and hopefully sound like a native speaker. But they forget that writing skills are also very important and you should practice them on a regular basis. And what is more suitable and fun way to do it? Writing essays, of course!

Engaging ESL Worksheets for Sharing Opinions

For beginner ESL students, learning to tell the difference between a fact and an opinion is the first step. This worksheet gives elementary-level learners practice with differentiating the two. They will simply read sentences about different countries and determine whether it is a fact or opinion. You can even use this activity after first introducing the topic. In a similar vein, we also love this resource for . Or if space is something that gets your students excited, not try this

For more advanced students, debates offer an exciting opportunity to share opinions. This exercise presents students with a handful of controversial yet age-appropriate topics for them to share their opinions about. Some of these questions include "Should there be any zoos in the world?" and "Are school uniforms a good or bad idea?" This is a written activity, but you can also use it as a starting point for an . It can also be adapted to fit multiple levels of experience. For more relevant topics, check out and .

Teenagers sure do like to share their opinions, but when it's in a second language, it's not always the easiest thing to do! This worksheet is practice for pre-intermediate to upper-intermediate students who are learning to express how they feel about certain subjects. The worksheet starts by giving students examples of expressions and statements to use when giving an opinion, followed by a list of opinionated statements. You can execute this activity by having signs around the room that say "Strongly Agree," "Agree," "Disagree," and "Strongly Disagree." Read the statement out loud and have the students navigate to the sign that corresponds to their feelings about the subject. Another fun way to get students talking is to have them . This has the added challenge of using past tense while expressing opinions. If you're looking for a writing exercise, this is a useful resource for . A great presentation to include in this lesson is  that teaches positive and negative statements.

 Sentence Starters

"I think" is extremely overused in the English language to express someone's opinion. Because of its simplicity, your ESL students will likely default to that phrase when sharing how they feel about something, but this worksheet will help them expand their repertoire with18 new ways to express what they think about a subject. Students can reference this resource during discussions, debates, and writing assignments. It's catered toward more advanced students, though teachers can adapt it to fit their curriculum for younger students. For something else, you can also check out these , where you can divide students into pairs or small groups and share opinions about food, the future, and language, to name some.

It is important for students to feel confident sharing their opinions, and this worksheet helps give them practice doing so. The worksheet includes a mix of lighter topics like "Facebook should only be used by university students and adults," to more serious ones like "Video games lead to youth violence." It's a good idea to plan a lesson about prior to giving them the worksheet so they have an idea of how to effectively structure their attitudes and thoughts about these subjects. For example, giving an opinion is most impactful when it is backed up by facts and personal experience. If you want to dive into something controversial and powerful for older or more advanced students, you can consider using this one on .

If you're teaching more advanced ESL students, you've got to download this resource. It's a fully mapped-out lesson plan for teaching opinion and debate. The first page gives thorough instructions for the teacher to follow, including ways to introduce the topic, tips to give students on speaking about their opinions, and activities to use as a warmup before diving into the main exercises. On the following pages, there are speaking activities students will complete, like sorting expressions into categories (agreement, disagreement, eliciting opinion, and giving opinion). The next activity provides a list of prompts, and students will need to share whether or not they agree with the statements and why. There are also vocabulary charts the class can use to get familiar with new terms.

There's no shortage of people giving their opinions around the world today, so as your ESL students are learning new topics, there's no better time to have them practice giving their personal opinions. In this simple activity, students will review different ways to say how they feel about a topic, such as "I'm quite convinced that [subject] + [verb]" and "To be quite honest/frank [subject] + [verb]." There are also more detailed tips on how to construct an impactful opinion statement. This is an extremely helpful resource for pre-intermediate level students!

As your ESL students become more comfortable with the language, you can start introducing more complex subjects like giving and asking for opinions. This resource highlights several ways someone can go about giving their opinion, agreeing or disagreeing with a statement, and expressing doubt or uncertainty. Then, it shows an example conversation between two people who disagree on a subject and how to appropriately communicate that. In the last section, students will need to share their opinion about a particular topic. It can be one that you provide them, or one they come up with themselves, but it should clearly illustrate their attitudes and beliefs regarding the subject using some of the language introduced earlier in the activity.

Divert Great Lakes Water to California?

To the Editor:

Re “ Pipe the Great Lakes to California? We Might Have To ,” by Jay Famiglietti (Opinion guest essay, “What to Eat on a Burning Planet” series, Aug. 9):

Professor Famiglietti’s essay about tapping the Great Lakes’ water supply drowns an important call for better national water planning under the specter of water diversion on a massive scale. Here’s why the idea is a nonstarter — and a dangerous distraction.

First, a better governance framework prevents it. The U.S.-Canadian Great Lakes Compact rules out diversion outside the Great Lakes basin with few exceptions.

Second, even if technically possible to move Great Lakes water west, the costs in terms of dollars and energy are unbearable. Hundreds of power plants would be required just to lift water over the Continental Divide and wouldn’t make a dent in the drought.

Third, a combination of engineering and poor governance got us into the Western water crisis, turning California into the nation’s breadbasket at great cost to ecosystems and economies. We can’t just engineer our way out of it.

People and industry will move, as they always have, where the climate is favorable and water and other resources are abundant. This migration is already underway, according to recent San Francisco Fed research and the choice by several high-profile industries to locate in areas of greater resilience.

As a water industry leader, I agree with Dr. Famiglietti on a single point: Smarter national water planning and policy are necessary and urgent, both for regions facing water scarcity and those, like the Great Lakes, coming under increased pressure because of our freshwater abundance. Today. Before it’s too late.

The importance of National Space Day lies in the extraordinary success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission and the devotion of the ISRO scientists. The theme for the celebration of National Space Day is ‘Touching Lives while Touching the Moon: India’s Space Saga’.

This day is an opportunity to pay heartfelt tribute to India’s efforts in space missions. On this National Space Day, we should promote national pride.

National Space Day Essay in 500 Words

National Space Day will be observed on August 23, 2024. It recognizes the achievements that India has achieved in space exploration and the advancements she has made in space technology. It was on August 23, 2023 that the government announced that from 2024, this day will be celebrated as National Space Day.

India became the first nation to land near the lunar South Pole on August 23, 2023. National Space Day celebrates the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission which achieved a safe and soft landing of the Vikram Lander at the 'Shiv Shakti' point and deployed the Pragyaan Rover on the lunar surface. Behind the success of this mission, lies the hardwork and dedication of the scientists of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

ISRO was initially the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR), established in 1962. ISRO, formed on August 15, 1969, superseded INCOSPAR. Chandrayaan-3 came after the failure of Chandrayaan-2. Chandrayaan-2 was launched on July 22, 2019. In September, ISRO lost contact with the Vikram lander as it crashed. This happened due to the high velocity of the lander.

Chandrayaan-3 displayed India’s commitment to space exploration and to unravel the mysteries of the Moon. Chandrayaan-3 consisted of an indigenous Lander module (LM), Propulsion module (PM) and a Rover with the purpose of developing and demonstrating new technologies needed for Inter planetary missions. The rover's purpose was to carry out in-situ chemical analysis of the lunar surface.

The objectives of the mission were to demonstrate safe and soft landing on the lunar surface, to demonstrate rover roving on the Moon and to conduct in-situ scientific experiments.

Chandrayaan-3 focused on- to carry out the measurements of thermal properties of lunar surface near polar region, to derive the chemical composition and infer mineralogical composition, to determine the elemental composition of lunar soil and rocks etc.

It will also help in the future discoveries of smaller planets in reflected light which will allow us to probe into a variety of Exo-planets which would qualify for the presence of life. Apart from this, ISRO has launched many missions such as the Aditya-L1 mission (September 2, 2023). It is the first space based Indian mission to study the Sun.

Few of the prominent future missions of ISRO are- Gaganyaan-1 (demonstration of human spaceflight capability by launching crew of 3 members to an orbit of 400 km for a 3 days mission and bring them back safely), NISAR (being developed by ISRO with NASA, first dual frequency radar imaging mission), Shukrayaan (mission to study Venus), Mangalyaan-2 (India’s second mission to Mars).

  • [Guest essay] Seoultopia: From heat island to chill city
  • Facebook 페이스북
  • Twitter 트위터

A pedestrian shields himself from the sun with a brochure as he walks through the streets of Seoul's Gwanghwamun on June 19, 2024, during a heat advisory. (Yonhap)

By John Eperjesi, professor of literature at Kyung Hee University

Seoul is turning into a ghost town during the summer months. As the climate emergency intensifies and average temperatures climb toward 35 C (95 F), anyone who can leave will leave, either for other countries or for the countryside or seaside where trees and water cool things down.

When it becomes too hot to go outside in summer, which we are getting a glimpse of now, all outdoor public culture — markets, festivals, concerts, exercise, sporting events, picnics, demonstrations — will be a thing of the past. The emotional, not to mention economic, impact of this will be devastating.

But this doesn’t have to happen. Seoul could transition from being a heat island to a chill city that people want to visit during the summer.

What is a heat island? According to the US Environmental Protection Agency:

“Heat islands are urbanized areas that experience higher temperatures than outlying areas. Structures such as buildings, roads, and other infrastructure absorb and re-emit the sun’s heat more than natural landscapes such as forests and water bodies. Daytime temperatures in urban areas are about 1-7 F higher than temperatures in outlying areas and nighttime temperatures are about 2-5 F higher.”

A vision of how Seoul could fight the “heat island effect” and become a chill city amidst global heating is given in Ernest Callenbach’s solarpunk novel “Ecotopia” (1975).

“Ecotopia” emerged out of, and helped define, the US environmental movement, which began with the publication of Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring” (1962), gained momentum with the first Earth Day (1970), and solidified with the passage of the Clean Air Act (1970), the Clean Water Act (1972), the Endangered Species Act (1973), and the founding of Greenpeace (1975). The geographical center of this movement was the Pacific Northwest (Northern California, Oregon, Washington).

In the novel, Callenbach imagines a future in which the Pacific Northwest secedes from the United States to found a country, Ecotopia, where degrowth policies aimed at human and ecological flourishing have replaced the American obsession with endless economic growth and rising GDP.

Ecotopian “new San Francisco” looks a lot like Seoul today: people live in highrise buildings, businesses are clustered around subway stations, and minibuses, electric taxis, and public bikes are abundant. In new San Francisco, biodiverse nature is meshed with the city:

“The bucolic atmosphere of the new San Francisco can perhaps best be seen in the fact that, down Market Street and some other streets, creeks now run […] So now on this major boulevard you may see a charming series of little falls, with water gurgling and splashing, and channels lined with rocks, trees, bamboos, ferns.”

This sounds like a good description of Cheonggye Stream, an artificial stream splashing through the city that is a popular destination for both locals and tourists, especially in summer. Hopefully someday the real Mt. Inwang watershed will be restored.

But there is one big difference between Ecotopia and Seoul today: new San Francisco is carless. When the protagonist, an American journalist named William Weston, visits the city for the first time, he is shocked:

“There was a strange hush over everything. I expected to encounter something at least a little like the exciting bustle of our cities — cars honking, taxis swooping, clots of people pushing about in the hurry of urban life. What I found, when I had gotten over my surprise at the quiet, was that Market Street, once a mighty boulevard striking through the city down to the waterfront, has become a mall planted with thousands of trees. The ‘street’ itself, on which electric taxis, minibuses, and delivery carts purr along, has shrunk to a two-lane affair. The remaining space, which is huge, is occupied by bicycle lanes, fountains, sculptures, kiosks, and absurd little gardens surrounded by benches.”

In order to combat the heat island effect, certain areas in Seoul should be made carless. A great place to start would be Gwanghwamun Street. Imagine coming out of the subway station, and rather than being assaulted with ten lanes of automobile traffic and noise and air pollution, you entered a mall planted with thousands of trees.

One ecotopian city in real life that is successfully beating the heat island effect is Medellín, Colombia, which in 2016 created a network of green corridors to fight air pollution and rising heat. By 2021, 2.5 million plants and 880,000 trees were planted across the city. In addition to reducing air pollution and increasing biodiversity, the project cooled some parts of the city by 2 C (3.6 F) in the first three years of the program, and officials expect a further decrease of 4 to 5 C over the next few decades.

In addition to having an immediate impact on the city, all those trees and plants are soaking up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and helping cool the planet for future generations.
