How to Fundraise for Environmental Nonprofit Organizations

Woman in nature

The climate crisis is one of the biggest challenges facing us today. Rising CO2 levels, melting ice caps and deforestation threaten humans and wildlife. And with each passing year, the threat grows.

If you’re fundraising for an environmental nonprofit, there is no more relevant and pressing need. But how do you find and retain donors when there are thousands of environmental nonprofits out there? How do you present this vital need in a way that’s engaging and fun?

At LexisNexis, we know that using an online donor research tool is essential to finding high-potential donors aligned with your organization’s values, but we’re also experts in other ways you can simplify the process of raising money to meet your fundraising goals, so you can focus on moving your mission forward.

The best fundraising ideas for environmental organizations

Protecting our planet is already a worthy cause. Successful fundraising for an environmental nonprofit is about connecting with the right donors, developing strategic campaigns, and utilizing social media and in person events to keep donors involved for years to come.

Identify your audience

Think about your cause and how it differs from other environmental nonprofits. Are you focused on preserving coral reefs? Removing microplastics from the ocean? Protecting endangered species?

Some nonprofits are location specific, such as the Los Padres ForestWatch , which protects wildlife, wilderness, water and sustainable access through the Los Padres National Forest. For these you’ll want to look at prospective donors who live in a specific area or have a personal connection to the cause.

For a nonprofit like the Rainforest Alliance , you’ll want to find donors who are interested in deforestation and conserving the world’s rainforests. Other donors are drawn to social justice oriented nonprofits, like EarthJustice , which litigates environmental issues free of charge.

Once you know who will resonate most with your message, you must learn about their capacity and interest in giving. Using an online donor research tool like Nexis for Development Professionals can make this process simple and effective. Search charitable giving databases , biographies and proprietary company data to build lists of donor prospects, focusing on region or specific interests.

Develop a plan for environmental fundraising ideas

The key to success is setting achievable fundraising goals and meeting them over and over again.  First, choose a specific goal , like planting a thousand trees or raising money for clean water in Flint, Michigan, then create an appropriate budget and timeline.

Then, assign roles and responsibilities within your organization, depending on the size and scope of the fundraising push. For example, you may want one person dedicated to finding high-potential donors or brand and corporate partnerships, while another team member might work on crowdfunding for smaller donations. Many organizations have at least one employee who applies for grants and writes up proposals for funding.

Consider fundraising on or around Earth Day, April 22 nd (though many nonprofits have begun to think of April as “Earth Month”). This is a yearly opportunity to engage existing and prospective donors in a fun and celebratory way.

Some environmental nonprofits, like the Sierra Club , use membership to incentivize recurring donations. Members enjoy special benefits like a magazine subscription, access to members only outdoor trips, or other Sierra Club swag.

Whatever fundraising strategy you choose, getting creative can make it easier to reach and exceed your goals.

Maximize online fundraising efforts

It’s important to know where your audience lives online. Boomers and other traditional donors often prefer to be contacted via email or on social media platforms like Facebook, while younger donors may prefer TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, or the convenience of text messaging.

Meet your donors where they’re at and create a cohesive digital campaign , using hashtags to expand your reach. Younger generations are increasingly invested in environmental causes, so consider using video content to raise awareness and engage prospective donors.

Video content is ubiquitous because of its efficiency as a storytelling tool. With stunning visuals, music and words, a reel or TikTok video can convey your mission and values in less than a minute.

All fundraising efforts should lead back to your website , which is a landing page for anyone interested in your cause. Make sure it’s accessible to all donors, and your donation button is displayed on every page , customizing it for both mobile and desktop.

In addition to social media platforms, engage donors with email campaigns and virtual fundraising events or experiences. Since the pandemic, virtual panels and Q&As have become a cost-effective way to engage donors all over the world.

Host successful environmental fundraising events

Before planning an environmental fundraising event, be certain it aligns with your organization’s values and mission. The most successful events will be environmentally friendly fundraisers and  keep sustainability and conservation top of mind while engaging donors in fun, creative ways.

Consider a used book fundraiser , an electronics drive , planting trees or selling zero footprint products . Plan a fuel-free fundraiser like CicLAvia , a Los Angeles based biking event designed to engage the community and reduce air pollution. At a beach clean-up , volunteers can ask their friends and family to pledge their support. They’ll spend the day removing litter and connecting with like-minded people, while raising vital funds in the process.

Whatever the event, a sponsorship or corporate partnership can help build publicity. Are their brands or companies who have publicly championed your cause? Are their local or national celebrities who have shown an interest in and capacity for giving to your environmental nonprofit? Companies and public figures often have environmental sustainability goals and are willing to partner with organizations as a part of those initiatives.

Build strong relationships with donors

Keep donors informed and engaged with a newsletter or social media posts showcasing the effect their contributions have had. Whenever possible, quantify that impact. How many tons of plastic did your organization remove from the ocean? Did your Meat Free Monday fundraiser prevent 1500+ bathtubs worth of water from going to waste? For example, donors to the National Forest Foundation can “donate” one tree a day for an entire year, to create 365 new trees (since 2018, they’ve planted more than 28 million).

When donors do give, recognize them with a handwritten thank you note or a phone call. Corporate donors and brand partnerships should always be announced with a press release . Remember that volunteers donate their time and energy, which is also valuable, so celebrate them with awards or a special event where they can connect over their shared passion.

When fundraising for environmental nonprofits, building a strong community and culture is essential. Showing your appreciation for your donors and volunteers will keep them engaged for years to come.

Identify brands and companies that have publicly committed to the cause

Partnering with companies that are already interested in your cause will make reaching your fundraising goals exponentially easier. Beyond a simple search, how can you discover brands that align with your core values and mission? How can you be certain you aren’t missing any noteworthy news or risk factors associated with a prospective partner or sponsor?

How to research donors for your nonprofit environmental organization

We must protect our planet. We must work to conserve ecosystems and endangered species—a more cost-effective endeavor than trying to undo the damage we’ve caused. Fundraising for environmental nonprofit organizations has never been more important, and mobilizing donors and prospective donors now can create a sustainable future for everyone on earth.

Let Nexis for Development Professionals® help you reach your goals. Sustainable Fundraising: Raise Money, Help the Planet

raising fund for environment essay

By Earth911

hands holding small globe

Sustainable practices are vital to protecting our environment, and your organization’s fundraising methods are no exception.

Did you know that sustainability is in fashion ? Through clothing-based fundraisers — such as general textile recycling or running shoe donations — fundraising in a sustainable manner is entirely manageable.

Explore these examples of sustainable fundraising practices and discover how you can incorporate these methods into your organization’s efforts.

Why Conduct a Sustainable Fundraiser?

Society is currently experiencing a crisis of fashion, but it has nothing to do with whether or not clothing is fashionable. Over 16 million tons of unwanted textiles are sent to landfills every year, while only 2.6 million tons are recycled. Considering almost all clothing can be either reused or recycled, it’s clear that there is major room for improvement.

In fact, nearly 95 percent of used clothing and textiles can be reused, according to Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles (SMART). As long as a clothing item isn’t contaminated with hazardous materials, recycling is most likely an option.

Not only is clothing recycling necessary, but incorporating it into your organization’s fundraising efforts can provide major benefits. Recycling fundraisers provide a service for your organization, your supporters, and the environment. Check out the benefits:

  • Your organization raises funds without expending a ton of resources.
  • Your supporters dispose of unwanted materials responsibly.
  • Reusable and recyclable materials are kept out of landfills.

Help the Environment While Raising Funds

There are a few strong options for sustainable clothing fundraisers, including clothing swaps, textile recycling, and, our favorite, athletic shoe drive fundraisers.

Clothing Swap Fundraisers

To conduct a successful clothing swap, invite supporters to clean out their closets to remove gently used clothing they no longer use. Then, organize a clothing swap event for supporters to gather and trade, shopping one another’s closets and leaving with new items of their own.

Of course, you want to raise funds for your organization through this recycling practice. Here are a few different ways you can do so:

  • Accept the clothing donations before the event, and set up a nonprofit resale pop-up store rather than a traditional swap.
  • Sell admission tickets to the event.
  • Optimize your giving processes, both digital and physical, to collect donations throughout the event.

Whether you use digital giving or are simply looking to improve your processes, check out Double the Donation’s guide to the top 20 online donation tools .

Textile Recycling Fundraisers

When fundraising by recycling clothing items, don’t make the mistake of discarding damaged items . We know that 85 percent of clothing purchased in North America ends up in a landfill. And, with fast fashion on the rise, it’s likely that a fair amount of this waste comes from cheaply made goods that wear out quickly.

Did you know that there are companies that specialize in fundraising through textile recycling? These companies purchase used clothing items and household textiles, recycle these fabrics, and raise money for your organization. It’s a great fundraising idea for kids and athletes, two populations that quickly wear through clothing items.

Athletic Shoe Drive Fundraisers

Last but not least, our favorite sustainable fundraiser: athletic shoe drive fundraisers.

Whether for casual comfort, convenience, or a regular fitness regime, your supporters have probably purchased a fair share of athletic shoes. Athletic shoes, more than others, are likely to be quickly cycled through by users. Because of this, a fundraiser for recycling tennis shoes is an excellent option for your organization!

These fundraisers have many benefits, including helping the environment by keeping discarded shoes out of landfills. Also, you help your supporters discard gently used athletic shoes they no longer use, and your organization raises funds.

Organize an Athletic Shoe Drive Fundraiser

The following guidance will help you organize this type of sustainable fundraiser. More details are available in Sneakers4Funds’ how-to guide for raising money while repurposing running shoes.

Pair the Shoe Drive With a Larger Event

Athletic shoe drive fundraisers pair well with many other fundraising events, such as run/walk/ride events, back-to-school events, and even community volunteer activities. Pairing one of these drives with a larger fundraiser creates a fun experience for your supporters while it helps to raise awareness of your unique fundraising efforts.

For inspiration, check out this list of walk-a-thon fundraiser ideas that combine well with an athletic shoe drive fundraiser.

Invite supporters to gather athletic shoes to donate.

Once you’ve determined whether or not to pair your athletic shoe drive fundraiser with a larger event (and planned that event, if so), you can ask supporters to donate athletic shoes.

For this type of fundraiser, supporters donate gently worn used and new athletic shoes for reuse. Ask supporters to spread the word to their families, friends, and broader networks and set up convenient drop-off locations for supporters to donate their sneakers.

Pack the Shoes & Ship Them Off

To carry out an athletic shoe drive fundraiser, team up with a facilitator — such as Sneakers4Funds — to manage the process. This facilitator will send you prepaid shipping bags that hold 10-15 pairs of athletic shoes each.

You’ll need to keep make sure each pair of shoes stays together during transport. Tie them together by the shoelaces or use rubber bands to ensure that matched pairs don’t get separated.

Bring the filled bags to your nearest UPS shipping center. Because the bags are prepaid, the athletic shoe drive portion of your fundraiser is entirely free for your organization!

Watch the Mail; a Check Is on Its Way

Once your facilitator receives the shoes, you’ll receive a check for your organization within days.

Clothing-based fundraising is a great way to bring the necessary resources to your organization while helping the environment. Whether you choose a clothing swap event, a textile recycling push, or an athletic shoe drive, there are plenty of options for successfully implementing this type of fundraising.

Consider incorporating sustainable practices into your next fundraising event, and help the planet while your organization thrives.

7 Best Eco-Friendly Fundraising Ideas for Your Nonprofit

As everyone becomes increasingly aware of their ecological footprint, donors are more enthusiastic than ever about supporting environmentally friendly fundraisers and organizations. We’ve compiled a list of effective eco-friendly fundraising ideas to help you raise funds for your organization, while at the same time promoting the values of health, environmental awareness, community, and sustainability.

Global temperatures are climbing. Ice caps are melting, droughts, wildfires, and super hurricanes are tearing their way across the planet.

Wild forests are being destroyed, especially in the tropics, often to make way for cattle ranching, soybean or palm oil plantations, or other agricultural monocultures. We are degrading the soil through overgrazing, monoculture planting, erosion, soil compaction, overexposure to pollutants, and land-use conversion. The growing global population, combined with growing affluence, is putting ever greater pressure on essential natural resources, like water.

These are only some of the major and pressing threats to the Earth — and all of life on it, including human life.

With issues like these looming over us, it comes as no surprise that eco-friendly fundraisers are becoming increasingly popular.

And not just with non-profits and charities…

As donors become increasingly aware of their ecological footprint, they seek out and are more enthusiastic than ever about supporting environmentally friendly fundraisers and organizations.

In this article, we’ll share seven creative ways to raise more for your cause while doing good for the environment.

7 Eco-Friendly Fundraisers for Your Nonprofit

We’ve compiled a list of effective eco-friendly fundraising ideas to help you raise funds for your organization, while at the same time promoting the values of health, environmental awareness, community, and sustainability.

1. Give it a Second Home

The problem:.

The fashion industry produces as much as 97 million tons of waste a year – and 18 million of those tons are textiles. As clothes decompose, they release landfill gas, a toxic brew of air pollutants that includes the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane. Plus, producing clothes takes up valuable resources like water and produces carbon emissions.

The solution:

Instead of discarding surplus clothing and household textiles, this fundraiser gives them a second life. Hosting a clothing drive allows these items to be worn again, recycled, or repurposed for the good of your cause and our planet. You can turn your drive into a clothing swap where attendees can exchange items from their wardrobe and enjoy new clothing options.

Set up, promote, and manage your eco-friendly textile collection drive, making it as simple and fun as possible.

Make money for your organization by collecting donations during your event or even charging a small fee to participate. You’ll be helping the environment and helping your important cause at the same time!

Pro tip: Before you start, get in touch with a local homeless shelter, Goodwill, the Salvation Army, or someone who recycles and repurposes clothes. Donate any clothing that isn’t swapped to these organizations.

2. Recycle Electronics

Many electronics are manufactured with harmful chemicals. If improperly disposed of, those chemicals can leach into the soil, polluting groundwater. Furthermore, many high-tech electronics rely on the mining of raw materials, including precious and semi-precious metals such as copper, lead, silicon, and aluminum. Each time someone improperly disposes of an electronic device, another opportunity is missed to reuse these valuable materials.

Recycling electronics is a straightforward fundraiser that will work particularly well for schools, colleges, and universities . It gives a second life to devices or their parts and keeps them from being improperly disposed of.

In many countries, old electronic devices can be exchanged for cash. Collect devices like:

  • Cell phones
  • Ink cartridges

And more. There are many ways in which these devices can be recycled; and a number of companies will want to buy them from you (to either repair, refurbish and sell on; or to reclaim parts for reuse).

Set up a collection point, perhaps at your school, where people can drop off their old electronics. Advertise your recycling drive, making sure to emphasize that the drive is for a good cause. Throughout the drive, keep people informed about the progress (e.g. 100 phones donated so far), and encourage further donations. This can also be a year-round fundraiser.

For example, Recycling Fundraiser  and  Funding Factory buy back electronics which include cell phones, iPhones, iPads, and other digital electronic devices.

3. Tree Planting

One of the most dramatic impacts of deforestation is the loss of habitat for millions of species. Eighty percent of Earth’s land animals and plants live in forests, and many cannot survive the deforestation that destroys their homes. In addition to the loss of habitat, the lack of trees also allows a greater amount of greenhouse gases to be released into the atmosphere. Further effects of deforestation include soil erosion because, with the clearance of tree cover, the soil is directly exposed to the sun, drying it out.

This is an eco-friendly fundraising event idea that everyone will want to be a part of! Commit to planting a certain number of trees if you reach your fundraising goal (for example, 10 trees planted for $1,000 raised).

When you reach your fundraising goal, get together with community members and plant the trees at a local park, forest, or nature preserve. Try to see if a local tree nursery will donate saplings to this event to increase your earnings even more.

4. Clean Up Party

Toxic materials or chemicals in litter can be blown or washed into rivers, forests, oceans, lakes, and creeks, and eventually pollute the waterways, land, forest areas, or aquatic environments. Plastic clogs waterways, leading to flooding in underdeveloped nations. It’s also killing birds and fish who consume it.

Use the warmer spring and summer days to clean up your local community for a healthier environment.

During a Clean Up Party, each volunteer gets garbage bags, a pair of gloves, and a shovel or garbage pick, and performs a walking clean-up of the designated area.

First, set a date and time for your clean-up event (ideally the weekend of Earth Day in April, but any day will do!). Get your volunteers to collect pledges from family members, friends, local businesses, and neighbors in your community. You can involve kids and other younger people in the community, and they might help you raise extra funds through friends and family.

The pledges can be a flat rate, or per bag, kilo, pound, or truckload of trash collected. They can also be per square meter or road mile cleaned.

Brand the event, blast music, and make it fun and upbeat. This will motivate more people to join in!

Or perhaps your goal is to raise funds to support a clean-up initiative, like L5P Alliance . They raised over $4,000 in 92 donations to support their initiative for a clean neighborhood.

5. Meatless Monday

Animal agriculture not only exploits billions of animals every year, but is also a leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions, habitat loss, and major health problems such as heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. It takes an enormous amount of water to grow crops for animals to eat, clean factory farms, and give animals water to drink. Runoff from factory farms and livestock grazing is one of the leading causes of pollution in our rivers and lakes. More than 90 percent of all Amazon rainforest land cleared since 1970 is used for grazing livestock. While factory farms are ruining our land, commercial fishing methods such as bottom trawling and long-lining often clear the ocean floor of all life and destroy coral reefs.

Place volunteers with pledge sheets at various high-traffic areas in your community. Run a fundraiser and challenge your community to give up meat for a day (Meatless Monday) or for a week and raise funds for your cause.

Set up your fundraising page and ask the participants to donate what they would usually spend on meat that day or that week.

Alternatively, you could turn this into a peer-to-peer fundraiser – where each of your participants would launch their own small fundraising campaigns and pages, encouraging their friends and family to donate in the name of those completing the challenge.

6. Eco-Friendly Products

Plastic bags start out as fossil fuels and end up as deadly waste in landfills and the ocean. Birds often mistake shredded plastic bags for food, filling their stomachs with toxic debris. Plastic bags are used for an average of 12 minutes. It takes 500 (or more) years for a plastic bag to degrade in a landfill. Unfortunately, the bags don’t break down completely but instead photo-degrade, becoming microplastics that absorb toxins and continue to pollute the environment.  Even Arctic regions are polluted by plastic, as are oceans and the ocean bed.

Instead of selling candy, balloons, or trinkets, offer eco-friendly products such as eco-friendly cleaning supplies, reusable grocery bags, biodegradable trash bags, organic food items, and soy candles. Not only are they healthier for humans and the planet, but they either last longer, serve a purpose, or are something your supporters will use every day.

For example, Equal Exchange’s Catalog Fundraiser offers a variety of USDA-approved organic and Fair Trade chocolate, coffee, tea, cocoas, olive oil, and more at a 40% profit.

One of the best products to sell if you want to fundraise in an environmentally responsible way is to sell reusable shopping bags. Encouraging more people to use reusable shopping bags is a great way to both raise money and help the environment.

There are several companies that offer eco-bags for fundraisers. Jutebags has natural ‘bags for life’ that can be sold for fundraising.  Ecosilk bags also have beautiful, durable bags that come in a range of vibrant colors.

7. Green Fast

Regardless of their surge in popularity in recent years, we’re still far from Earth-friendly and sustainable practices becoming the norm. Only 20 years ago, the majority of people were unaware of how their choices impacted the environment. Many people still don’t have practical tips and ideas to change up their lifestyle to be better for the environment. On the other hand, some find the amount of information and tips out there too overwhelming and don’t know how to get started.

Challenge your community to a green fast , asking them to adopt more environmentally friendly practices for a single week. Pick only one or a couple of these to make the challenge less overwhelming for the participants. For example:

  • Keeping showers at 2-3 minutes each.
  • Washing clothes in cold water.
  • Carpooling or using public transportation or a bike.
  • Not using single-use bottles, containers, forks, straws, knives, etc.
  • Composting or collecting food scraps.
  • Reusing scrap paper.
  • Shopping for plastic-free produce.

For best results, turn this into a peer-to-peer fundraiser. Encourage the challenge participants to reach out to friends, family, and acquaintances to solicit donations.

Bonus: Green & Sustainable Fundraising Ideas

1. used books fair.

Like with the clothing/textile drive, ask your community members to clean out their bookshelves and donate the books they don’t want to keep or read again. Then, organize a used book fair and sell the books.

2. Eco-Friendly Market

Eco-products are all the rage now, and new eco-friendly and eco-first companies are popping up every day. Hold an eco-friendly market and invite those companies to join in and run a stall at the market for a set fee. You can also charge a small entry fee to customers to raise additional funds. It’s a win-win. The companies get to sell to more customers and raise their brand awareness, and you get to raise funds for a green cause.

3. Seeds and Growing Kits

Sell seeds or growing kits for flowers, plants, herbs, and vegetables. This fundraiser is particularly great for schools . Earth will only benefit from more people learning more about the complex process of growing plants and food. There are plenty of companies out there that offer a whole range of healthy, fun, and educational products for you to choose from, which can be sold through a take-home drive, stall or event, or even a simple order form.

To encourage reusing and repurposing, organize a fun day of workshops where participants are taught how to mend or repurpose clothes, furniture pieces, toys, and more. Get all the supplies donated (or collect them), and inspire an eco-friendly and sustainable spirit.

You could even have zero-waste or low-impact bloggers come in and teach participants how to make their own toothpaste, tomato sauce, or detergent.

Sell tickets for this event, the way Community Cat Angels did for their “Painting For A Purpose” Fundraiser. They used Donorbox Events to easily share all event information, collect payment, and set a ticket sales deadline to manage their attendance.

5. Nature’s Classroom

Nature’s Classroom is an immersive and fun outdoor education program that aims to inspire participants to get to know and love the natural world. This fundraiser is particularly effective with children.

Organize team-based classes, games, quests, and challenges for participants to learn more about the great outdoors. Getting to know nature is the first step to respecting it and protecting it.

And don’t be afraid to think outside the box!

raising fund for environment essay

It doesn’t take a lot to promote sustainability in lasting and valuable ways. Simply looking around your own school, organization, or community and initiating small improvements is one of the easiest ways to support a cleaner and healthier planet for all.

The detrimental impact that human activities have on the environment is undeniable. Studies are being conducted each year demonstrating the extent of the issue. Climate change and other major environmental issues will result in catastrophic consequences in our future (and some of them are already visible).

More needs to be done to remedy the major environmental issues that affect us today. The good news is that by making changes, we can have a direct and positive impact on the environment.

Going green with earth-friendly products, recyclable materials, reusable containers, and more is the way to go.  So why not also run a green fundraiser the next time you decide to have one? Raise funds, promote environmental awareness, and help the Earth – all at the same time!

Many non-profits are working on environmental issues as we are discussing, and we have a couple of unique ideas for environmental charities which you can try easily.

Unite for Good: Become A Fundraiser For Environmental Charity And Shape A Brighter Future.

Our Fundraising Ideas For Environmental Charities

1. go green.

Yes, this is obvious, but to be frank, not everyone is paying attention to this subject. Deforestation is a huge concern now as it fluctuates in our ecosystem. Not only the ecosystem but the emission of greenhouse gases is also making a significant impact on our lives. Oxygen is one of the most essential parts of our lives, so start planting trees before it gets expensive.

Start your campaign for planting a number of trees by joining local organisations and schools if possible. Find local parks or forests to start the mission and seek the help of local nurseries if they can donate some plants for a peaceful future.

2. Eco-Friendly Sale

Almost every day, we get to see news from all over the world about how certain wastes are playing a vital role in endangering land animals as well as ocean animals. Due to the heavy use of plastic products, many diseases have risen among animals and birds. In the ocean, plastics are found in the stomachs of ocean animals, which often is the cause of their death. As wastes like plastics cannot be recycled, such plastic pollution has harmful effects on wildlife, ocean habitats and human life as well.

The toxic chemicals that come out of such types of wastes have harmful effects on humans, such as cancers, birth defects, and impaired immunity.  That is why promoting sustainable and recycled products can be one of the great eco-friendly fundraising ideas for environmental charities. These kinds of environmental protection charities can benefit both the ecosystem and the living beings of the planet.

3. Recycle Away

Whenever we talk about fundraising ideas for environmental charities, the most emphasis can be put on the subject of recycling products. Recycling helps to reach a waste to its full potential and reduces its environmental impact on living beings. Such waste management practices can be beneficial to the global ecosystem. Recycling can also be very economical as well as sustainable.

Not only recycling regular products but recycling electronic equipment/products can also make a great impact on the environment. Arrange for a recycling event where people can donate certain products for recycling and buy some of the recycled products, which can be an excellent idea for an environmental charity.

Environmental Charity - recycle away

4. Used Book Fundraiser

Many people are fond of reading and keep a number of books at home. Ask people to donate books they prefer not to treasure forever. Organise a book sale and inform the buyers about the environmental charity. Use the funds for a particular cause related to an environmental charity. Allow the donors to donate to the charity even if they don’t want to buy anything from the sale.

5. Clean Up Fundraiser

Simply cleaning the environment by using cleaning supplies can be a great start for the best environmental charities. Such fundraising ideas for charities for the environment are community-based activities that can be done with the help of a group. Join hands with local organisations and organise a clean-up charity event that encourages people to combat waste and plastic pollution.

A sk for a small fee for the volunteers who can join the charity against plastic pollution, unsustainable land practices, and water pollution. You can also organise cleaning events at beaches or roads to raise funds.

6. Fuel Free Fundraiser

We all know how serious air pollution can be. The harmful effects of the gas coming out of vehicles can cause serious damage like respiratory diseases, heart failure, and cancers. Such life-threatening diseases are causing due to the significant amount of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxides from daily transportation. Thus, cycling is an eco-friendly transportation option for controlling air pollution to some extent.

Organise a cycling event and make it fun, which can educate people about the harmful effects of air pollution and also promote a healthy lifestyle by explaining the benefits of cycling. Charge a small participation fee for the cycle tour and gather funds for environmental charities. Going fuel-free can be one of the best environmental fundraising ideas for obvious reasons.

7. DIY Paper Making

Have you ever tried paper-making on your own? This is one of the most exciting eco-friendly fundraising ideas for environmental charities, where you can help people learn something artistic. Achieve Your Fundraising Goals with this Guide to Eco-Friendly Fundraisers and Environmental Fundraisers

In the age of climate change and modern industrialization, how do beautiful parks, clean beaches, and thriving forests around the globe stay healthy and vibrant. How do we ensure we’re leaving our children a better world?

raising fund for environment essay

Environmental fundraising activities and campaigns support eco-friendly initiatives keeping our planet green and clean. Green fundraising isn’t all about driving the cash the organizations need into their operations budgets. This form of fundraising builds and engages a community concerned about raising awareness and provoking action toward sustainability efforts.

Eco-charity events create that “getting involved in the community” feeling, which is the spirit that drives change. From a local bake sale to a charity run or recycling competition, fundraisers for the environment raise much-needed money for these organizations. These initiatives underline the importance of taking care of our natural world.

Eco-friendly fundraisers are a great way to have fun and learn about sustainability practices. From zero-waste events to upcycled craft sales, fundraisers have many creative methods to leverage and raise financial support for green initiatives.

So, come on! Be part of the movement. Take part in green causes that make a difference. Together, we’ll secure everybody's future by greening our world today. Let our passion for the environment realize itself through hosting successful environmental fundraisers!

Understanding Environmental Fundraisers and Fundraising Objectives

So, what exactly are environmental fundraisers? Put simply; environmental fundraisers are activities, events, or campaigns targeting raising funding and awareness for ecological causes. They raise money and support conservation efforts that preserve natural habitats and endangered species, promote eco-friendly initiatives, and combat climate change. They're all about rallying people who care about the planet to take action by donating, volunteering, or just getting the word out.

Beyond raising funds, environmental fundraisers have the primary purpose of empowering and stimulating communities to protect the environment and ensure sustainability. Through these events, people learn more about what’s happening to the planet and how they can help make a difference. It’s an effort toward creating a positive ripple effect that fans out across the community.

There are a lot of fantastic eco-friendly fundraisers out there. Another super-fun fundraising method is hosting charity runs/walks. The money would be raised for the organization by selling sponsorships for athletes competing on the day, where donors pay a certain donation for every mile walked or run. These are excellent, engaging event ideas that get people together and promote active, healthy lifestyles as an essential component of green fundraising initiatives. You could also hold an eco-friendly market or fair with local artists and sustainable small businesses selling all types of goodies, from vegan treats to renewable home energy systems.

Activities such as tree-planting drives act as a conduit to supporting the cause of regaining green spaces within cities and conserving national heritage sites.

Workshops and seminars create opportunities for generating attendance fees while teaching attendees lessons on recycling, renewable energy, and other practical ways of living sustainably.

One of the most potent strategies concerning environmental fundraising in this decade of high-tech solutions and AI is virtual fundraising. From crowdfunding sites to viral challenges, these activities gain audience traction worldwide. Now more than ever, it’s easier to participate in saving the environment from anywhere in the world.

Be it wildlife conservation, renewable energy, or reducing plastic waste, there’s an environmental fundraiser to suit your revenue goals and environmental mission. Get involved, have fun, and make a difference for the good of our planet!

What are the Benefits of an Environmental Fundraiser?

Environmental fundraisers enhance community engagement by bringing peers together under the banner of a worthy cause. They raise environmental awareness about issues the world faces and how people should take action.

These events fundraise for great conversation causes, which raises the money to kick off projects and make them successful. These activities characterize implementing sustainable change through placing pragmatic solutions in people's lives and in communities. Together, we can proactively protect this planet using green-friendly fundraising to make an eco-friendly, sustainable future a reality.

Community Engagement and Raising Awareness

Something special happens whenever people come together for a cause to create positive change for the betterment of the planet.

Probably one of the most essential advantages of environmental fundraisers is their ability to spread awareness for sustainability projects. This platform gives people the opportunity to inform themselves of ecological concerns.

Activities, workshops, and information booths, give participants information regarding the threat of climate change, loss of ecological biodiversity, and sustainable living. Through raising awareness, eco-friendly fundraisers communicate to people the importance of taking good care of the environment and how to work on making environmentally-friendly choices in everyday life.

The more awareness people have regarding the prevailing issues affecting the planet, the more their interest grows toward supporting, acting, and fighting for change.

Supporting Conservation Projects

These causes include preserving natural habitats, protecting endangered species, and restoring ecosystems. Projects in the conservation sector require funds to run operations smoothly. With a tree-planting fundraiser, for example, a depleted area can provide a habitat for local wildlife while improving air quality.

Capital raised for marine conservation projects fund programs connected with cleaning up oceans and saving sea life. Such initiatives create a tangible contribution to the fight for keeping the biodiversity of our planet safe from extinction.

Sustainable Practices Promotion

Sustainability fundraising events are great at raising awareness about sustainable living within communities. A green fundraiser may provide demonstrations of composting, re-processing, or renewable energy installations. Educated people will gradually shift toward life-sustaining practices that minimize waste and conserve resources.

Environmental fundraisers can make communities adopt green practices, and pressure local businesses and decision-makers. The result is a ripple effect within communities that extends beyond it.

Many people like the idea of fundraising to find cash for a variety of good causes. For example, many parents and grandparents help their children to sell various goods and services to raise money for their school or activity.

But what if it is unsustainable products or services that are being sold to raise the funds? Many of us want to only fundraise when what is being sold is clean, green and environmentally sustainable. That is why we have compiled the list below of incredible ways to fundraise with some fantastic eco-friendly ideas. Whether you want to sell a product, organize an event or an activity, we have some great, eco-friendly ideas for you.

Reusable Shopping Bags

One of the best products to sell if you want to fundraise in an environmentally responsible way is to sell  custom reusable shopping bags . Encouraging more Americans to use reusable shopping bags is a great way to both raise money and save the environment. Why?

Other popular reusable bag styles used by schools and organizations include custom laminated tote bags, custom non woven tote bags, custom canvas tote bags, custom recycled plastic tote bags and more.

Plastic shopping bags are one of the most environmentally unfriendly products on the market. They are seldom recycled, with less than 1% of such bags being recycled in the US. Plastic bags also are made from petroleum oil, and take as many as 1,000 years to decompose. And in terms of affecting animal life, plastic bags are the worst. It is estimated that one million birds, turtles, and various sea animals choke to death on plastic grocery bags.

Your school or organization can make a real statement on behalf of the environment by selling custom reusable shopping bags. They typically are made from eco-friendly materials such as hemp, cotton twill or ripstop nylon.

This is a really simple and environmentally friendly way to raise money. It is a great choice for cheerleading teams, sports teams, and various school clubs.

Can you get more eco-friendly than running a fundraiser that leads to trees being planted in environmentally sensitive areas? We didn’t think so! There are companies out there that will help you to market ‘tree gift cards’ for many types of fundraisers. Every card you sell means there is a tree planted in a US national forest.

Organic Seeds

A great product to sell in the spring months is organic herb and vegetable seeds. Brochures from companies that sell these organic products typically have individual heirloom seed packs as well as bundles of various seeds. There also are window ledge seed options for people to grow their own herbs and spices in their kitchen window.

Various Energy-Saving Products

There has been great progress made in the last decade in a huge assortment of energy-saving products on the consumer market. There are companies that sell many types of these products, such as compact fluorescent lightbulbs, power strips that save energy, LED holiday lights, and an assortment of water-saving products for the home.

Fair Trade Chocolate and Coffee

The coffee and cocoa business is frequently tied to the systematic exploitation of workers and severe environmental damage. Today, schools and many other nonprofit organizations are raising money for their activities by supporting coffee and cocoa farmers around the world.

Farmers who participate in the Fair Trade system work on a cooperative basis and are guaranteed to earn a fair wage for their nation of residence. This allows them to live a healthier life, which leads to a better community and environment in their area.

Chocolate companies routinely sell Fair Trade Certified chocolate from countries in Africa. Schools can purchase these chocolate bars at the wholesale cost, resell them at the retail price, and keep the difference for their group or organization. Selling this type of chocolate also ensures that it was grown in an environmentally responsible way, without genetic modifications, dangerous pesticides or fertilizers.

Also, some coffee companies sell 12 ounce bags of organic, Fair Trade coffees. These products are bought in bulk at a major discount and then are resold for retail price.

Hunger Games

This is a fun fundraiser that is environmentally responsible and can be adapted to the ages and skills of those involved. People pay an entry fee of a few dollars to participate.

Some of the skills competitions can include:

  • Trivia, such as questions from the Hunger Games movies
  • Paintball target shooting
  • Obstacle course
  • Eating contests
  • Water balloon fight
  • Design contest

The proceeds of the event then can be donated to your cause.

Organic Fair

You can host either an indoor or outdoor organic fair that is a great way to bring attention to local businesses who feature organic products. There are many types of organic products that can be featured at your organic fair:

  • Beauty products
  • Cleaning products
  • Solar energy products
  • Electric cars
  • Fashion products

Cow Pie Bingo

This is an incredible, family-fun event where you sell raffle chances to accurately guess where the ‘cow pie’ will drop on a large field with cows that has been marked off with numbered squares. Obviously, waiting for the cow pie to drop involves quite a bit of standing around. So this fun activity makes sense to combine with other activities, such as a school carnival.

To attract more people, try having live music, a bounce house, games, eating events, pig kissing contest and more. Remember, the more you make the event, the more people will attend and buy raffle tickets for the big cow pie event!

Recycle Electronics Fundraiser

There are many types of electronics today that can be easily recycled for cash:

  • Cell phones
  • MP3 players

A nice thing about recycling small electronics: It can be a year round activity! Some schools and other organizations establish a drop off box so that people can put their recyclable electronics there whenever they like. There will continue to be a large supply of out of date electronics that need recycling year after year. There are plenty of companies out there to choose from that will accept and recycle these electronic devices.

Watershed Cleanup

If you care about the environment, try this great fundraising idea: Raise cash by participating in a community cleanup event. The idea is to get pledges from the community for a dime to a quarter per pound of the trash collected.

It is very common for creeks, rivers and lakes to become nasty dumping grounds for various junk. Keep in mind that you may run across large items, such as tires and washing machines. In that case, it is recommended to set a limit on what each person can pledge dollar wise. Many participants are able to get five or more pledges, so a $20 or so limit might work.

Earth Day is every April 22, and is a fine time to hold an eco-friendly fundraiser. As this is spring, it is a good move to sell various green-related items such as flower bulbs, seeds, saplings, organic fertilizer, much and much more. Try to work with local gardening suppliers to get them to deliver the bigger items, such as fertilizer, much and bags of soil.

Rubber Duck Race

This activity involves creating a floating rubber duck derby, where the numbered ducks float down a creek or stream to the finish. You can sell raffle tickets for $5 per duck and award cash or prizes to the first, second, third place finishers. In many of these events in the past, the minimum number of ducks was 3,000. Some schools may have more. Some students and schools make it a true family event with food, face painting, water balloon fights and other fun activities.

Collect Bottles and Cans

A simple way to raise money and to help the environment is to organize a neighborhood clean up in your area. Teams of students with adult supervision can comb streets and parks and look for aluminum cans and plastic bottles. These products can be bagged and taken to the local recycling center for a certain amount of cash per pound. This helps to clean the community, save energy and conserve our natural resources.

Rummage Sale

A good green idea is to repurpose a variety of consumer goods that would have gone to the landfill. All you need to do is get the word out in a few neighborhoods that you are holding a big yard sale at your school or church, with the proceeds going to your activity or organization. Then, arrange for a pickup service and/or a point for dropping off goods. Then, publicize the rummage sale on social media and neighborhood flyers. Students can even run the entire event, with some adult supervision.

Product Labels

There are many consumer products where you can collect labels and wrappers and trade them in for cash. Many elementary schools often organize a box tops program where box tops can be collected for 10 cents each.

Another option is Tyson Chicken product labels fundraisers; each label may be worth up to 24 cents, with schools able to raise as much as $12,000 per year.

Six fundraising ideas for environmental charities

Here are six fundraising ideas for environmental charities to raise funds and help protect the planet at the same time

Green piggy bank on a brown wooden table

Climate change is arguably the biggest challenge the world is facing. It’s imperative that all charities play a part in helping to reduce our carbon footprint , and getting the UK on track to achieve Net Zero by 2050 .

If you are an environmental charity, you have a greater responsibility to engage the public in your mission and in fighting climate change. Here are six fundraising ideas to help engage supporters, the public, and corporates to raise funds and make a positive difference to the environment at the same time.

Second-hand book sale

According to an industry report by the Publishers Association , 669 million physical books were sold in the UK in 2022. That’s roughly ten books per person in the UK.

We’re clearly a nation of readers so why not organise a book sale to raise funds and help the environment at the same time.

Organise a book sale yourself in a local community centre or church and ask your supporters to organise their own book sales at home, at work or in their own communities.

Upcycling workshops

Furniture such as chairs, dressers, tables, and cupboards can often find themselves on the way to the skip or recycling centre when their owners decide they’re past their prime or are not to their taste.

Instead of throwing out old furniture, we should be upcycling them instead. Old fashioned pieces can be transformed into more modern pieces with just a little bit of love and attention – and skill!

London-based social enterprise, Petit Miracles, offers upcycling workshops where you can learn how to upholster, upcycle furniture and restoration.

Consider starting your own upcycling workshops and charge people to attend. Not only will they leave with an item they love, but they’ll have also prevented their furniture from going to landfill.

‘Go vegan’ challenge

In 2021, the Climate Change Committee recommended that people need to reduce the amount of meat that they eat, both for their health and for the planet.

In the UK, vegans account for only 2% of the population and 6% identify as vegetarian. A recent YouGov survey found that a further 3% of people would challenge themselves to a vegan diet throughout January and that 12% of non-vegans between 18-24 said that they would take on a vegan challenge.

Set up a Facebook Fundraiser and Group and challenge your supporters to go vegan for a month. You can also run paid ads to target a colder audience who would be interested in taking on the challenge. In 2023, Veganuary broke records with over 700,000 people taking part, so the appetite for this challenge is there.

Partner with an eco-friendly brand

There are so many brands, big and small, who are producing eco-friendly products and looking for CSR (corporate social responsibility) opportunities. For example, wildlife charity WWF has partnered with skincare brand Liz Earle .

Together they are working towards restoring and protecting seagrass meadows along the Isle of Wight coastline (which is the home of Liz Earle) and across the UK.

If you’re a small environmental charity, research small eco brands to partner with. A top tip is to search Instagram and TikTok using search terms or hashtags such as #SmallBusiness #EcoBusiness #EcoFriendlyProducts etc.

Once you’ve identified an eco-brand you’d like to approach about a partnership, be sure to do your due diligence. You may also want to seek legal advice in terms of licensing your brand.

Clean up fundraiser

Organise a clean-up fundraiser in a designated part of your community. This could be a beach, canal, river, or even a park. On the day, volunteers are given gloves, a rubbish bag, and a litter pick to help them clean up the area. They could also wear branded charity t-shirts to help raise awareness of your cause.

Ask volunteers to get sponsored for taking part in the clean-up. You could also approach local businesses to sponsor the event or donate prizes to whoever picks up the most litter.

Pre-loved clothes swap party

We’re living in an age of ‘fast fashion ’, where an item worn by a celebrity can be reproduced and on sale online in just ten days. Research shows that people wear an item of clothing an average of ten times and that one in three young women consider an item worn just once or twice to ‘be old.’

According to Clothes Aid, 350,000 tonnes of usable clothing end up in landfill each year in the UK. Why not encourage your supporters to get their friends together to organise a pre-loved clothes swap, where a donation is made to take part.

This can also work in an office environment. Not only will it raise funds, but it will also help stop perfectly good clothing ending up in landfill.

The Environmental Benefits of Effective Giving

The Environmental Benefits of Effective Giving

November 30th is International Day of Climate Action. We thank our wonderful contributor Brad Hurley for this great piece about the broad range of ways our recommended charities are protecting and improving the environment at the same time that they protect and improve lives.

When we give to a charity, we usually think in terms of supporting a specific cause or outcome. If I give to  Village Enterprise , I’m helping to empower low-income individuals in Africa to launch and grow their own businesses. If I give to  One Acre Fund , I’m helping to improve the productivity of smallholder farmers. But the work of effective charities can bring a range of benefits that reach far beyond the main focus of their interventions.

Co-Benefits Matter

raising fund for environment essay

Tanzanian farmers Suzana Chavargino and Jimmy Nziku with two solar lights they purchased from One Acre Fund on credit.

For example, research shows that increases in life expectancy at birth and decreases in maternal, infant, and child mortality are associated with improvements in economic growth. One recent study of 48 African countries found that a  9.4-year increase in life expectancy leads to a 1 percent increase in real gross domestic product  per capita. This means that when you give to charities such as the  Against Malaria Foundation ,  Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition ,  Iodine Global Network , or  Population Services International , you’re not just saving lives. You’re also helping to promote longer-term economic growth in countries that desperately need it.

Similarly, the work of effective charities can have environmental benefits, such as improving air quality, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, preserving habitat, and reducing hunting pressure on endangered or rare species. If, like me, you care about these things, environmental co-benefits can play a role in your giving choices.

Integrating Environmental Priorities into Charities’ Work

Some effective charities explicitly incorporate environmental criteria and goals into their interventions.  Oxfam , for example, has long been involved in  efforts to limit climate change and build resilience  to its impacts in developing countries. In addition to saving lives at scale and reducing under-5 child mortality,  Living Goods ’ entrepreneurial community health workers sell efficient cookstoves and solar lights along with healthcare products. In East and Southern Africa,  One Acre Fund  distributes solar-powered lamps and home systems as well as clean cookstoves on credit to smallholder farmers.

Innovations for Poverty Action  (IPA) runs a Financial Inclusion program that  helps build low-income households’ resilience  to climate change and other stressors. IPA also has evaluated a number of projects that aim to provide environmental benefits, to improve our understanding of how to respond to climate change. Projects include evaluating an initiative to  promote carbon sequestration  by farmers, understanding  renewable energy installations , experiments to  improve participation in recycling programs , and a study in Uganda to  assess whether paying farmers to leave trees standing would reduce deforestation . In that project, landowners who received contracts to conserve their forest cleared only 4 percent of forested land, compared with 9 percent in control villages, avoiding 3,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions that otherwise would have occurred during the study period.

Other charities are working to document the environmental benefits of their activities. For example,  Village Enterprise  and the African Wildlife Foundation launched a partnership in 2018 to reduce poverty and protect an endangered population of bonobos in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The project aims to develop microenterprises, using Village Enterprise’s graduation model, that offer alternative livelihoods to the hunting and selling of bushmeat, a widespread source of income in poorer rural areas of the country. The two nonprofits intend to explore how to scale their partnership to other regions.

Capturing the Indirect Benefits

The work of charities such as Village Enterprise, Oxfam, Living Goods,  Give Directly , and others that focus on reducing or ending poverty can also lead to some types of environmental benefits indirectly through economic improvements. The relationships between economic growth and environmental quality are  complex and inconsistent , but there is evidence that at least some environmental indicators (e.g., sanitation and water quality) tend to improve as poverty declines. And as renewable energy technologies become more widespread and affordable, some countries may even be able to avoid significant increases in greenhouse gas emissions as their economies grow.

When we think about effective giving, it’s worth considering the impact of ancillary environmental and economic benefits that may result from the interventions of charities we give to. Positive environmental benefits add to total effectiveness, increasing the good that you ultimately achieve with your giving and may contribute toward the long-term sustainability and health of populations served by the charities you help fund.

10 Surprising Ways You Can Raise Awareness About Environmental Issues

We are reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn affiliate commission.

There’s no way around it —humans can only protect the planet through action. This effort can’t happen without educating the greater public and raising awareness about environmental issues — and that includes everyone, from parents to neighbors to strangers. How do people effectively and efficiently get the word out about the environment? Here are 10 ways to raise awareness about environmental issues.

1. Attend a Rally or March

A strike can be an effective way to draw attention. Consider movements like 2017’s People’s Climate March in Washington, D.C. The same thing happened in 2019 when millions of people worldwide gathered in their respective countries before the United Nations Climate Action Summit, and again in 2022 when Fridays for Future carried out global strikes in protest of global heating. These events received significant news coverage.

If you can’t find a rally or march to attend, you should talk to like-minded individuals to organize your own. There are climate change activists everywhere, so you won’t have to look very hard to find people who want to help. Be sure to promote your event early and often so that you can achieve a high turnout.

Rallies and marches can be especially effective when you have local issues related to climate that you could rally around. If you want to learn more about creating a successful rally or march, look no further than learning from many young climate activists who have both organized and attended rallies or marches to help our planet.

2. Use Social Media

We all know social media has power. Online platforms can work as tools to help you educate more people. It might not seem like much to share, like, and comment on posts, but you’d be surprised at how much influence those actions have. You only need to see one tweet to change your perspective.

Try using your online presence to the planet’s advantage. An easily-digestible post with accurate information can do wonders. If you don’t have time to create that content, you should look for social media accounts that promote sustainable living and discuss environmental topics. From there, you can follow these accounts and share their content.

Be careful what you share on social media, however. Some people have promoted sustainability while also taking tourist trips that are anything but sustainable and end up sending mixed messages to their followers. Spreading public awareness can also sometimes backfire, as in the case of slow lorises having an increasing demand for them as pets , which has put this animal in danger of extinction.

Research each topic and craft your messages carefully to have the greatest chance of making a positive change.

3. Contact Elected Officials

Our elected officials have more authority than anyone else. After all, they write and sign legislation that becomes law. It’s vital to put people in office who want to protect our planet. By contacting them, you can do your best as a constituent to raise awareness about environmental issues.

If you have an issue you want to address, you should contact local and state legislators via email or phone. They might already have a solution, but you need to hold them accountable either way. It’s also smart to learn about their backgrounds so you know whether to vote for them during the next election.

Tips for contacting elected officials include:

  • Identify yourself: The first paragraph of your letter or email should identify you as a constituent. It should also briefly explain why you’re writing to the legislator.
  • Keep it brief: Ideally, a letter or email should be one page long or less.
  • Be original: There are plenty of pre-written letters you can simply sign and send to a legislator, but original correspondence helps you stand out from the crowd. Consider using a pre-written letter as a template to write your own unique message.
  • Be succinct: Sometimes, less is more. Choose a maximum of three main points to address in your correspondence.
  • Get personal: Does the legislation you’re writing about affect your life personally? If so, tell the legislator about it. Include a short story about how the legislation will affect you and your community.
  • Be respectful: It’s fine to take a firm stance on an issue, but always keep your message respectful — even if you disagree with a legislator politically.
  • Include your address: Many legislators are too busy to send a response. However, including your address gives them a chance to reply if they have time. It also solidifies the fact that you are a constituent.

4. Recommend Books and Movies

It’s not always easy to conceptualize climate change. This phenomenon doesn’t affect us in ways we can immediately see, hear or feel. The world might be getting warmer — but that’s not necessarily remarkable to the average person. As a result, you should try recommending media that helps your friends and family learn about climate change more tangibly.

Watch something like Our Planet or Before the Flood for your next movie night. You can also lend reads such as The Uninhabitable Earth and How to Prepare for Climate Change: A Practical Guide to Surviving the Chaos to your loved ones. These resources offer a more accessible and intriguing way for people to learn about climate change.

Reading is also a great way to help people of all ages challenge their thinking and learn from other opinions. Whether it’s encouraging your children to read about nature and wildlife or starting a book club in which you tackle the latest non-fiction books on climate and the environment, reading helps us all understand more about our place in the world.

5. Be Accommodating

There are times when activists can seem unapproachable. If you’re using buzzwords like “net zero” and “carbon footprint” without explaining them, you can’t expect everyone to listen to what you have to say. Your message won’t seem relatable. A person who adjusts their vocabulary accordingly will reach more people.

This method isn’t “dumbing down” specific concepts. It’s simply speaking to people in a language they understand. Try to incorporate more straightforward phrases into your vocabulary.

For example, instead of mentioning a company’s carbon footprint, you could talk about how much greenhouse gas — especially carbon dioxide — the business emits when manufacturing and shipping its products. Rather than saying a corporation is carbon neutral, explain that it removes just as much carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as it emits. These small changes can accommodate people who aren’t as well versed in climate policy as you are.

You can even share stories and anecdotes as a way to make things personal. These tactics will make a difference.

6. Write Articles and Create Videos

Do you have a creative streak? If so, you should consider putting out content to raise awareness about environmental issues. This method will be especially useful when you want to inspire hope or shine a light on unknown topics. There’s always room for more articles and videos about how people can make a difference.

You can use online platforms like blogs and YouTube to publish your content. Eventually, you should have a repository of content that helps raise awareness. We can never have too much information surrounding climate change.

Be sure to use your social media presence to promote your content. There’s a higher chance people will see everything that way. You can also reach out to publications to see whether you can be featured.

7. Learn the Nuances of Recycling and Composting

More people are taking advantage of curbside and city recycling programs, while others are engaging with modern composting methods because of environmentalist trends on social media. While these are severely impactful actions to create environmental awareness among your household and loved ones who visit, leading by the wrong example is frequently a byproduct of well-intended enthusiasm for climate action.

Many people need to research more before engaging with recycling or composting and end up doing them incorrectly. This is how wishcycling came into existence — putting something in recycling that you’re unsure about and hoping the facility takes care of it.

Actions like this, while framed with positive motivations, have harmful side effects. Inappropriate recyclable gum up machinery, causing breakdowns. Too many faults lead to decreased funding because they aren’t meeting metrics, potentially leading to dismantling city recycling altogether.

Composting operates similarly. Whether you use a countertop composter or a worm bin, it’s essential to show your household and visitors the suitable protocol. This way, if they are inspired to begin their climate activist journeys, they start on the right track.

8. Combating Consumerism and Capitalism

People’s purchasing habits are among the sneakiest yet impactful environmental issues of the modern era. Increased e-commerce caused shopping-related emissions to skyrocket. Influencer content on social media exacerbates this behavior, as they normalize excessive, frequent purchases. Raising awareness about this issue requires people to do a few things:

  • Despite their convenience, actively boycott corporations with negative environmental impacts, such as Amazon, SHEIN, and Walmart.
  • Unsubscribe and unfollow influencer content where most of their content is hauls or sponsorships for products with an adverse impact.
  • Support local.
  • Tell friends and family you want to avoid shopping as a hobby or a way to spend quality time.
  • Have a secondhand-first mentality.
  • Mend and repair instead of buying something new.

The constant need to spend and obtain material possessions is a thought process embedded in most developed nations. Overcoming this by practicing slow, intentional shopping practices leads to far less waste and condemns a system meant for environmental exploitation and labor crises.

9. Perform a Trash Audit

There is nothing that is going to make someone more aware of the waste they produce than a trash audit. Encourage your household or office to do one to raise awareness on several environmental issues, including single-use plastics, e-waste, and more.

Place sheets of paper with pens near all trash receptacles. Make everyone write down every item they throw away, whether a candy wrapper or an iPhone. Set a deadline for the audit to end — it could be a week or a month.

At the end of the period, everyone involved will know the items they throw away most. Repeated items, like coffee pods, Q-tips, or banana peels, could be catalysts for how to shave waste production. Each item can produce a goal or encourage an eco-friendly replacement. Otherwise, people may not understand precisely how much trash they throw away.

10. Prioritize Eco-Financial Responsibility

There are several ways to raise awareness about the environmental impact of where you put your money and investments. Let’s start with personal spending.

The perfect way to tackle this issue is to take your money from chain banks and place it in local or eco-friendly institutions. Most banks benefit from fossil fuel investments or other questionable initiatives — putting your money in these businesses indirectly supports environmental destruction. The more people switch to local, climate-aware banks, the more toxic banks struggle to support their dangerous interests.

Additionally, investments have a carbon footprint too. Many people discuss their investment portfolios and how well the S&P 500 treats them. Though index funds and other assets may be reliable because you’re supporting successful companies, many of these organizations have horrific environmental impacts. Numerous top-performing enterprises do little to curb their emissions for ever-increasing profits.

Green investing is a novel and eco-conscious way to put money toward environmentally cognizant projects and companies. Would you instead put your money toward green energy innovations or a tech company illegally dumping e-waste in underdeveloped regions?

The Importance of Action

Even though we all know the importance of taking action for the environment, how many of us do anything about it? Knowing what to do is just the first step — we need to take that knowledge and turn it into action.

According to Yale’s 2021 climate opinions map, 72% of American adults believe global warming is happening. Yet how many Americans are taking steps based on these beliefs? We conducted a survey of the American public to find out how many are taking action to raise awareness for the environment. Here are the results.

raising fund for environment essay

According to our survey, nearly 50% of Americans have taken zero action to raise environmental awareness. This indicates that even though many might recognize, in theory, the importance of protecting the environment, far fewer are going out of their way to support the idea. But if we want real change to happen, we need to start living out our beliefs today.

Ways to Raise Awareness About Environmental Issues

It’s essential for people who care for the planet to raise awareness about climate change. If we want to protect the Earth, we need everyone’s participation. Consider exploring these ideas to help you speak up and educate others. Your efforts can not only help inspire others to act but also change the future of our world and everyone in it.

Environment Fund

Warning message, the environment fund, established already in 1973 by the un general assembly, is the core financial fund of the un environment programme (unep). as the main source of unrestricted funds, provided by  member states , it enables strategic and effective delivery of results, while allowing for flexibility to respond to emerging environmental challenges..

The Fund provides the bedrock for the work of UNEP worldwide, supporting countries to deliver on the environmental dimensions of the 2030 Agenda. It is critical to the work in science, policy and environmental governance and law, which in turn helps drive positive impact for the environment.

The Environment Fund is used for:

  • Implementation of the  Medium-Term Strategy and its programmes ;
  • Keeping the environment under review . For example, flagship scientific publications such as the  Global Environment Outlook , the  Global Chemicals Outlook  and the  Emissions Gap Report  translate the best available scientific knowledge into information relevant for decision makers, who then can turn policy into action;
  • Identification of new emerging environmental issues (such as through the  Frontiers -series).
  • The work on several science-policy platforms that bring together scientists, governments, industrial and international organizations, and civil society;
  • Innovation for addressing environmental challenges;
  • Advocacy and awareness raising on environmental issues;
  • Capacity building and transfer of technological innovations;
  • Results-based planning and management;
  • Bringing together governments, the private sector and civil society in advancing the global environmental agenda, for example through the UN Environment Assembly ;
  • Hosting the secretariat of many critical multilateral environmental agreements;
  • Robust oversight .

Of the Fund, 87 per cent is used for the thematic sub-programmes. The rest supports strategic direction, management and programme support, which are critical for implementing the organisation's vision and ensuring robust oversight and delivery.

This video explains why the Environment Fund is critical to UNEP:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8xuFFXxU0o

Contributions to the Environment Fund

In 2023, the Environment Fund provided US$ 89 million, or 15 per cent, of UNEP's total income. The income received represented 89 per cent of the approved budget. To see current information on all contributions and contributors to the Fund, visit the Contributions page .

Who are the contributors to the Environment Fund?

Since 2012, UNEP membership encompasses all 193 UN Member States, who are responsible for funding the programme. By the end of 2023, 80 Member States had contributed to UNEP, out of which 48 contributed at their full share (see below). Currently, the top-15 funding partners provide over 90 percent of the income. (all figures as at Dec 2023)

What is each Member State's share of the Environment Fund?

The share that each Member State is encouraged to contribute to the Environment Fund is represented by the  Voluntary Indicative Scale of Contributions (VISC) . The VISC   was established in 2002 by the UNEP Governing Council. The aim of the VISC is to broaden the base of contributions and to enhance predictability in the voluntary financing of the Environment Fund. See our Frequently Asked Questions on the Environment Fund  for more information.

Because one size does not fit all, the requested share is tailor-made for each country.

The VISC is based on the UN scale of assessments, but also takes into account other criteria, such as each Member State's economic and social circumstances, previous high levels of contributions etc. Based on these criteria, the VISC proposes the percentage that each Member State is encouraged to contribute to the UNEP's Environment Fund.

Essay on Environment

In the 21st century, the Environmental crisis is one of the biggest issues. The natural surroundings that enable life to thrive, nurture, and destroy on our planet called earth are referred to as an environment. The natural environment is vital to the survival of life on Earth, allowing humans, animals, and other living things to thrive and evolve naturally. However, our ecosystem is being harmed as a result of certain wicked and selfish human actions. It is the most essential issue, and everyone should understand how to safeguard our environment and maintain the natural balance on this planet for life to continue to exist.

Environment means all the natural things around us such as land, air, water, plants, animals, solid materials, garbage, sun, forest, and other things. These maintain a balance of healthy nature and make the survival of all living things on earth possible. However, due to the need for resources for development, we have deformed the environment in several ways. These changes have hampered our environment and balance of nature. We are risking our existence and the life of future generations by ignoring these changes.

The changes made by humans in the environment has to lead to severe damages like global warming, climate change, depletion of water tables, scarcity of water resources, and many more. In the coming time, the world is going to experience conditions that are going to be worse. As a result, the forthcoming generations might not get access to many resources. Forest fire in Australia and Amazon is the aftermath of human ignorance toward the environment.

Life is only possible if the balance between natural resources is maintained by all of us. It is high time that humans should come together and work for the betterment of our surroundings. By adapting, eco-friendly or sustainable methods for development, we can be cautious about saving our surroundings along with making advancements.

Nature provides an environment that nourishes life on the planet. The environment encompasses everything humans need to live, including water, air, sunshine, land, plants, animals, forests, and other natural resources. Our surroundings play a critical role in enabling the existence of healthy life on the planet. However, due to man-made technical advancements in the current period, our environment is deteriorating day by day. As a result, environmental contamination has risen to the top of our priority list.

Environmental pollution has a detrimental impact on our everyday lives in a variety of ways, including socially, physically, economically, emotionally, and cognitively. Contamination of the environment causes a variety of ailments that can last a person’s entire life. It is not a problem of a neighborhood or a city; it is a global issue that cannot be handled by a single person’s efforts. It has the potential to end life in a day if it is not appropriately handled. Every ordinary citizen should participate in the government’s environmental protection effort.

Between June 5 and June 16, World Environment Day is commemorated to raise awareness about the environment and to educate people about its importance. On this day, awareness initiatives are held in a variety of locations.

The environment is made up of plants, animals, birds, reptiles, insects, water bodies, fish, humans, trees, microbes, and many other things. Furthermore, they all contribute to the ecosystem.

The physical, social, and cultural environments are the three categories of environments. Besides, various scientists have defined different types and numbers of environments.

1. Do not leave rubbish in public areas. 2. Minimize the use of plastic 3. Items should be reduced, reused, and recycled. 4. Prevent water and soil contamination

Group questions DENR chief’s leadership of ‘Loss and Damage Fund’

  • Jonathan L. Mayuga
  • August 27, 2024
  • 2 minute read

“Missing in Action.”

This is how the Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya) described Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga for her alleged silence over the continuous land reclamation on Manila Bay.

Thus, the group is now questioning her credibility to leading the Loss and Damage Fund, raising moral and political ascendancy issues to host the United Nations’ (UN) climate finance body.

Last month, the Philippines through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) was selected to host the Board of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage.

“Why is the DENR so eager to pursue this climate finance mechanism that it even seeks passage of legislation for the Loss and Damage Board? The enthusiasm of Environment Secretary Yulo-Loyzaga is startling, given that she has established the reputation of being missing-in-action in crucial environmental matters including the call to revoke the permits of destructive reclamation projects in our fishing grounds,” Ronnel Arambulo, Pamalakaya vice chairman said in a statement.

The fishermen’s group has been criticizing the DENR’s alleged inaction to its call for the revocation of the environmental compliance certificates (ECC) of at least 22 reclamation projects at Manila Bay.

The LDF is a finance mechanism to help vulnerable countries cope with the climate impacts. It was launched during the 28th Conference of Parties (COP28) held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates last year.
