9: Nine Movie Review: A Sci-fi Film That Comes Into Its Own After It Turns Into A Psychological Thriller

9: Nine Movie Review: A Sci-fi Film That Comes Into Its Own After It Turns Into A Psychological Thriller

Language: Malayalam

Cast: Prithviraj, Mamta Mohandas, Wamiqa Gabbi

Director: Jenuse Mohammed

Nine sets off on a very intriguing and exciting thread. A comet is going to pass by planet Earth over a period of nine days. In those nine days, the planet will go into complete darkness, with no electricity or modern technology. How will humans survive such a blackout?

Director Jenuse Mohammed, who made his debut with the Dulquer Salmaan film 100 Days of Love has Albert (Prithviraj), an astrophysicist, as the leading character. Albert is a widower with a young son, Adam. Apart from being a loner, Albert also has a strained relationship with his son. When his boss, Dr. Inayat Khan (Prakash Raj speaking horrifyingly broken Malayalam), offers him an opportunity to write a feature in Time magazine about the comet, Albert agrees and goes to the Himalayas with his son to study the event closely.

The film opens with an aged and bespectacled Prithviraj doling out science lessons to his young son, Albert who eventually grows into the protagonist. His backstory is clearly unimaginative—a wife (Mamta Mohandas, the official cameo queen off late) who dies when in labour, leaving behind a lonely unhappy boy. The initial portions introducing Albert's workplace and colleagues were unusually bland with conversations that read like they were part of a theatre performance and colleagues who seemed to be fans in awe of Albert's every word. There is a bit about his boss Inayat Khan that feels like it came straight out of an old Renji Panicker script.

Prithviraj's Albert is the third fantastically similar character he has played in recent times, after Ranjan Mathew ( Ezra ) and Adam ( Adam Joan ). The brooding loner husband, who battles inner demons that spill over in all his relationships. The core is also the weakest link in the film—the father-son bond that falls flat. What should have been an intense relationship fails to keep us invested emotionally. The writing is so ordinary that there is not a single memorable scene between the two. And the actors seem to be struggling to display the necessary warmth crucial for such an intense bond.

Nine appears to be a sci-fi film on the surface, but with its frames bearing the texture of psychological/horror film, there is enough to feel the chills. This is eventually what works in the narrative, with the elements of horror being downright eerie. The film really picks up pace when the sci-fi gives way to spine-chilling horror. At the large bungalow, small hints of an impending horror trail are let loose—the enigmatic morose old house-help, and a girl (Wamiqa Gabbi) who is brought home by Albert. Gabbi, with her auburn-tinged hair and gentle smile, is scintillating as this mysterious stranger who creates a bond with the little boy.

At some point in the film, we are on our way to figuring out the paranormal activities, but almost every puzzling question is spoonfed to us. Trimming unnecessary elements like that superficial romantic ditty (that would have worked infinitely better as a brief monologue) would have added some pace to the narrative.

Nine succeeds, to an extent, in covering up the writing flaws with superb production value and technology. The VFX, except for that comical fox, is convincing and creative—especially the star-lit dark sky, the reddish comet, and the black, cloudy ghostly invasion.  So was the BGM that effectively gave goosebumps.

The last few portions were uncomfortably like Ezra that also dealt with a similar predicament. Prithviraj, apart from repeating himself, is also causing harm to his films by repeating certain actors and worse, giving them the same old narrative. The talented Rahul Madhav, for instance, looked like he had never left the Adam Joan sets. Either way, the sub-characters were all sketchy. Mamta Mohandas appeared sporadically in black and white gowns and bright pink or red matte lipsticks and failed to evoke any emotion.

Nine , despite having an interesting premise, ended up as feeling like the last in the Ezra , Adam Joan series

The primary conceit of writer-director Januse Mohammed's 9 is about a comet upon entering the atmosphere leads to an electronic/electric shutdown for nine days. This concept has the makings of a wicked satire, but the maker decides to focus on a personal tale of equally intriguing opportunities, like how the obsession of an astrophysicist over the phenomenon leads to ghastly incidents in his household.

The film follow astrophysicist Albert (played by Prithviraj), embarking on a scientific expedition along with his team of scientists as they entangle themselves in a series of spooky events when Albert chances upon a stranger, Ava during his first viewing of a comet. Accompanying Albert is his son Adam, played by master Alok.

The film starts with Albert's father accompanying him in a lunar eclipse. This scene may come across as inconsequential in due course of the film, but the initial portions ground the fable-like storytelling into reality. The first half invests attention to the minute details that results in much better surprises later, and the world building unfolds in a Shyamalan-esque manner, that is elaborate yet engaging. Hence a major portion of it does not happen at a breakneck speed.

The horror sequences are more thrilling in the second half as the stakes become higher and we begin rooting for them only at that point. The expository dialogue involving the comet in the early sequences are less complex and does not alienate the audience, full credits for the writer. The first half engages us with neatly staged and edited stretches, for instance, the stretch involving the supermarket on the eve of the phenomenon had a sense of a well made social commentary in it.

It is the second half that sucks us into the thrilling events as every setup finds its own resolve, like the burst of a buried landmine. The red herring unveils in front of us and when the deceptions become clear the film creates a race against time kind of situation. The film brilliantly uses light and shade to convey the mood of a situation (the film was shot by Abhinandan Ramanujan), for instance, a happy occasion like a father wishing his son a happy birthday is shot in a dimly lit interior, portraying the dysfunctional relationship between them.

Even the visual effects had a certain amount of believability in them. Wamiqa Gabbi's portrayal of Ava lends an eerie presence to the film and Master Alok is a revelation as Adam, as he conveys the desperation of the character with ease and excels even in the close-up shots, a quality that is found in experienced actors. After Koode, this film makes great use of Prithviraj's earnestness.

One wishes that the director had used more silence for us to be absorbed into the atmosphere of the film and Adam had a lot of scenes in the initial portions (the character of Adam feels a bit underwritten). But minor problems aside, what makes 9 work very well is the fact that the layers of sci-fi and horror are used to tell a story about unfocussed parenting, a universal theme that gives a deeper connection with the film.

‘Nine’ review: Psycho thriller treading unfamiliar terrains

Jenuse mohamed's nine is a thriller with streaks of paranormal, built on a straight, uncluttered screenplay.

Updated - February 09, 2019 07:19 pm IST

Navamy Sudhish

Nine has a canvas dripping reds and blacks — twilight seeping into the screen and setting various tones of grotesque, faces illuminated by the eerie glow of candles and frames exploring the texture of darkness. Its storyline stems from an intriguing premise, a cosmic phenomenon that leaves the earth without power and communication for a period spanning nine days. At the same time, Nine is not any desi sci-fi classic nor is its hero engaged in some doomsday adventure to save the galaxy. It's more of a psycho thriller with streaks of paranormal, built on a straight, uncluttered screenplay.

  • Director: Jenuse Mohamed
  • Starring: Prithviraj, Wamiqa Gabbi, Alok, Mamta Mohandas
  • Storyline: Albert, an astrophysicist, reaches Himalaya for research, but now he has to save his 7-year-old son Adam from the forces of darkness
  • Run time: 149 minutes

Nine follows astrophysicist Albert (Prithviraj) and his 7-year-old son Adam (Alok) who reach the Himalayas to study the trajectory of a comet with a team of researchers. It is a world devoid of electricity and internet, complete with an air of foreboding amplified by mighty mountains and tribals who look at the red trail in the sky with eyes full of alarm. Rich in atmospherics, the narrative takes a spooky spin when Eva (Wamiqa Gabbi), a mysterious woman, joins the father-son duo in their sprawling bungalow.

Nine treads unfamiliar terrains in Malayalam in its ambitious attempt to blend drama, horror, suspense and science fiction, and Jenuse Mohamed succeeds in it to a great extent. The film, despite its loose ends and incongruities, keeps you hooked to its novel and crisp narrative as the director works his way through the permeating sense of the unknown. While Abinandhan Ramanujam's camera effortlessly sweeps you to the vortex of horror and mystery, Sekhar Menon's sound design renders the film its near-perfect tempo. Prithviraj handles the intricacies of his character with utmost poise and Alok is adorable as little Adam. Wamiqa Gabbi delivers what is demanded as she negotiates the creepy twists and turns, never turning it into a bad trade-off.

The only problem with Nine is its hurried climax, a grand revelation that lacks its indispensable crescendo. It required more build up and reel time before it slowly evolved to the point through more intriguing clues and calculations. The film features a highly skippable flashback song sequence, but it loses grit when the most crucial moment of the film arrives. Having said that, Nine is hardly mediocre any respect and the film is definitely a different and refreshing watch.

Prithviraj starrer '9' movie review in malayalam:

9 movie review malayalam

Prithviraj Sukumaran Starrer 9 Movie Review in Malayalam:

'She is not just a pretty face'.

9 movie review: The lovely Prithviraj, an intriguing premise share space with confusing treatment of mental health

Language : Malayalam with Hindi

Rating: 2.75 (out of 5 stars)

A little boy stands watching a solar eclipse with his father in 1990 with a rough-hewn contraption on his head. The scientist Dad disabuses him of misconceptions about this natural phenomenon that have been spread by superstitious and ignorant folk. Never stop asking questions even when adults tell you that not every question has an answer, the father says.

Fast forward to the present day, the child Albert has grown up to be a respected astrophysicist, still asking questions. He is also a widower struggling with the upbringing of his son Adam who is constantly getting into trouble.

Meanwhile, humankind is awaiting the passing of a red comet at unprecedented proximity to Earth. Electromagnetic waves from the comet are expected to cut off all electrically operated equipment for nine days. With even the smallest of batteries bound to be affected, and no modern means of transport available, a panicked public stocks up supplies and riots break out in some places. Albert for his part takes off for the Himalayas with Adam for a research project. Their lives go haywire following the arrival of the comet and a woman called Ava in their home.

9 , as the news media has already reported, is Sony Pictures Entertainment’s first foray into an Indian film industry other than Bollywood (for heaven’s sake please let’s stop using that awful, marginalising term “regional cinema”). It has been produced in collaboration with Malayalam superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran’s newly minted production house.

Prithviraj multi-tasks with this project, also playing Albert on whose shoulders the entire film rests and Albert’s father in his prologue appearance. The film is based on an intriguing premise that merges the very human fear of the unknown with mental health issues, science, the supernatural and a disturbed father-son relationship, the starting block of which is the fact that the boy Adam’s mother died in childbirth. Adam (played by the child actor Alok from  Clint ) is thus a constant reminder of what Albert lost that his son may be born.

Writer-director Jenuse Mohamed’s plot takes a while to lift off. At first a needless, obvious effort is made to up the already satisfactorily restless atmosphere with some manipulative camerawork especially in the introduction of Albert’s mentor Dr Inayat Khan (Prakash Raj) and shots focused on Albert’s face. A pointless romantic number involving a flashback to Albert’s late wife Annie (Mamta Mohandas) ends up being stilted and clichéd.

9 truly gets into the groove though as soon as the comet and Ava (Wamiqa Gabbi) enter the picture. Once that happens, Mohamed and his able cast, backed by Shameer Muhammed’s slick editing and Arun Ramavarma’s sophisticated sound design, roll out a thoroughly engaging, perfectly paced narrative. Past the problematic initial half hour, DoP Abinandhan Ramanujam strikes a fine balance between closing in on the characters and pulling out to give us an eyeful of the pristine Himalayan setting of most of the film. With a first-rate team on board, Mohamed delivers a psychological-meets-the-paranormal thriller that remains captivating till the big reveal in the climax.

Prithviraj’s controlled performance as Albert, particularly after he figures out the mysterious goings-on around him, is the fulcrum of 9 ’s effectiveness. A big salute to him too for his diction while delivering the considerable number of Hindi dialogues assigned to Albert.

(As an aside here, it is worth mentioning that Indian cinemas other than Hindi/Bollywood are far more representative of pan-India cultures and languages than is Hindi cinema which almost entirely confines itself to the Hindi belt or at best to other parts and peoples of north India. Sometimes though, the use of Hindi in Malayalam films feels strained, as though Hindi is seen by the writer as aspirational and a mark of coolth, somewhat mirroring the average Hindi filmmaker’s attitude to English — this can be irritating. The use of Hindi in 9 ’s dialogues works because the language is relevant to the setting and context, but sounds forced in that song featuring Albert and Annie although it is set in Delhi.)

Little Alok is a remarkably mature actor, his confidence is especially impressive in the scenes he shares with his seasoned co-star.

Gabbi may seem to be overdoing her work in places, but be patient - in the end it becomes clear that she is actually spot on with her take on Ava. The writer’s choice of gender for this character is interesting.

Mohandas’ charming personality makes her an apt casting call for a wife that a man might find impossible to get over.

In addition to its focus on science and rationality, 9 is important because it spotlights mental health concerns in a cleverly artistic way designed to invite audience empathy. However, at a crucial juncture it comes across as being confused in its understanding of this sensitive subject. ( Spoiler alert ) Why and how on earth, for instance, does a cosmologist and not a psychiatrist/psychologist/therapist diagnose and counsel a seriously unwell individual? And what was the writer thinking showing this ‘counsellor’ intimidating and threatening the patient with a deadline to get sorted? ( Spoiler alert ends ) This review is not expecting 9 to have been a documentary on mental wellness, but considering the widespread ignorance in this matter in India and the prevailing attitude of “this is how such people should be handled”, the film’s casualness in that brief scene, including incorrect terminology, is unacceptable.

9 then is not all smooth sailing, but because its missteps largely occur in passing (the mixed-up portrayal of mental health, the use of a stereotypical black-is-for-evil-white-is-for-good colour palette among other things), once it settles into its rhythm, it is never less than entertaining and largely thought-provoking.

Besides, I would willingly pay the price of two tickets to watch any film in which Prithviraj Sukumaran is in good form. He is here.

9 movie review malayalam

A comet passes the earth for nine days. Although it didn’t cause harm to the lives, the electronic appliances didn’t work, while the comet passes. Right from the mobile phones to certain type of vehicles, nothing works. The entire world stuns as nothing functions. To solve the issue, Albert Louis, the Astrophysicist and his son Adam visit the Himalayas. What did they do there? Did Louis find any solution? What happens to Adam? Did Supernatural powers exist? Watch the film in theaters.

Star Performance

Prithviraj has done his role neatly. He is very much comfort in playing the father role. His body language and expressions are flawless. Wamiqa’s performance is noteworthy. Master Alok has done an excellent job.

This genre is new to Mollywood. It is indeed a good attempt by Jenuse. The star casting is good. The screenplay is good. But, it raises a lot of questions and many of them are left unanswered. However, while moving to the next scene, the audiences forget those mysteries. Similarly, Wamiqa Gabbi’s character seems to have half-baked. However, she performs well. The music is great and the cinematography too.

What’s There?

  • First of this genre in Mollywood
  • Performance of the stars are excellent; especially Prithvi
  • The film is technically sound

What’s Not There?

  • Some characters are not well defined

Nine is a fantastic genre to Mollywood. Prithviraj’s performance is stylish and it impresses the movie lovers. If you want to watch a performance-oriented supernatural horror thriller film, this film is the best choice, as of now.

A clueless sci-fi juggling between genres.

A spooky experimental mystery that raises questions about modern lifestyle. Must Watch!

One wishes that the director had used more silence for us to be absorbed into the atmosphere of the film and Adam had a lot of scenes in the initial portions (the character of Adam feels a bit underwritten). A Sci-fi Film That Comes Into Its Own After It Turns Into A Psychological Thriller

Nine succeeds, to an extent, in covering up the writing flaws with superb production value and technology. BANKING PARTNER

Real estate partner, 9 movie review: a ghost prowls all over the plot, leaving it messed up.

Curated By : Gautaman Bhaskaran

Last Updated: February 09, 2019, 18:27 IST

9 Movie Review: A Ghost Prowls All Over The Plot, Leaving It Messed Up

The script of 9 goes all over with little sense or direction, and abysmally poor editing makes the film a hotchpotch affair. Read our review of the Malayalam horror movie here.

Direction: Jenuse Mohamad

Cast: Prithviraj, Prakash Raj, Wamiqa Gabbi, Alok

When The Exorcist came in 1973, it was sheer novelty to watch a pair of eyes turning blood red, a head rotating, green puke and the eerie noises that the apparition made. But 45 years later, Indian moviemakers have not been able to evolve or shake themselves off the ghost of The Exorcist . Just a while ago, there were any number of Tamil films that plotted stories on the supernatural, a trend that continues now with a Santhanam starrer playing in theatres.

But what seems a trifle disappointing is that Malayalam cinema, known for sensibility, is also starting to step into the ghostly arena with nothing new to show. Writer-director Jenuse Mohamed's 9 (yes that indeed is the title) with luminous actors Prithviraj and Prakash Raj essaying two scientists, much to my dismay (for I had hoped that these men would not involve themselves in a work of this kind), turned out to be an exercise in sheer stupidity. Yes, a moviemaker friend of mine from Singapore, Shilpa Krishnan, did warn me before I got into the cinema that much as she admired Prithviraj, he was increasingly disappointing her by doing bizarre roles. She was bang on.

The star plays an astro-physicist, Dr Albert Lewis, who lost his wife when his son, Adam (Alok), was born. When the film opens, the boy is seven, curious, naughty and even aggressive, getting into violent tiffs with his classmates that see him expelled from school. When Albert is worrying about what to do with the child, he gets an assignment from his mentor, a senior and well-regarded scientist, Dr Inayat Khan (Prakash Raj). He wants Albert to document the extremely rare celestial occurrence of a huge comet whizzing past the earth, and the best place to watch this would be the Himalayas. So, Khan packs off Albert and Adam, along with a couple of other scientists to a mountain resort – thinly populated. The ideal setting to get an eerie ghost story rolling. And with the comet's fly past resulting in a breakdown of electricity and modern communications for nine days when the object will be crossing the earth, what more can the spirits ask for.

If the plot is hollow, the writing is awfully lazy. While the supernatural being, played by Eva (Wamiqa Gabbi), is prowling around Adam, bullying him, terrifying him, his father is busy working from a watch tower, miles away from the huge bungalow where Khan has accommodated the two. All Adam has for company is a old servant, who himself looks haunted and ready to sink into the floor, and with Eva badgering the kid, the movie turns into a series of jump-starts with Mohamed relying on this boringly archaic technique to frighten his audiences. Startling them ever so often by thrusting the slimy spirit with blood-shot eyes into your face is nothing short of cheating.

Much like Manoj Night Shyamalan's early The Sixth Sense , Mohamad resorts to tricking his viewers with a climax that I felt really cheated about.

If the script goes all over with little sense or direction, abysmally poor editing makes 9 a hotchpotch affair. I could not understand (sorry for the spoiler here) why Khan would, when he was aware of Albert's psychiatric condition, send him to a desolate place with his little son. Albert subconsciously hates his son, and holds him responsible for his wife's death. He is, therefore, bent on harming the little lad. Dr Khan says all this in a sermon-like speech at the end.

9 is a work that is eminently avoidable. It's appalling that this kind of cinema even gets funded.

Rating: 1/5

Antony Varghese starrer 'Kondal' delivers high-octane stunts in a sea-bound thriller | Movie Review

Swathi P Ajith

If you're a fan of action films, you're in for a treat. Picture this: intense, action sequences set against the sea with Antony Varghese unleashing his fierce persona against a horde of villains. That’s Kondal, directed by Ajith Mampally, in a nutshell. But don't be fooled—there’s much more to this film than just high-octane thrills.

Kondal follows the story of Manuel, a hot-headed yet well-intentioned man, who finds himself aboard a boat with a group of fishermen embarking on their routine sea expedition. As tensions rise and conflicts erupt one after another, the film keeps you guessing about the underlying reasons behind the escalating confrontations.

One of the standout aspects of Kondal is that 95 per cent of the film unfolds on a boat adrift at sea. With Antony Varghese leading the cast, it’s no surprise that the film is packed with electrifying stunt sequences, and he truly delivers and the setting amps up the experience. However, for the audience to fully engage and cheer on the protagonist’s battles, the antagonists must be convincingly vile. Shabeer Kallarakkal, as Jude, and Rahul Rajagopal, as Michael, embody such menacing characters that viewers will find themselves eagerly rooting for their comeuppance. Joining the cast is Kannada actor Raj B Shetty, but the details of his role and how it weaves into the plot are best discovered by watching the film in theatres.

The first half of the film may seem a bit scattered, but as it progresses, the mysteries begin to unravel. However, with so much happening, the emotional connection to the characters and the story can fade off.

Antony Varghese undeniably shines as the standout performer, bringing a unique intensity to the action sequences. His physicality is striking—when he leaps into the air, fists clenched, ready to strike his opponents, he truly exemplifies the ferocity of a lion. His commanding presence and appearance in the film only amplify this impression. Other cast members including Nandu, Manikandan R Achari, Gauthami Nair, Jaya Kurup, all deliver whats expected of them. The supporting cast, including Nandu, Manikandan R Achari, Gauthami Nair, and Jaya Kurup, all deliver solid performances that meet expectations.

The background score is thunderous leaving audiences wishing for even more of it. While the film’s ending may be somewhat predictable, it remains power-packed and satisfying. For fans of high-energy stunt movies, Kondal offers an engaging experience that is best enjoyed on the big screen.

Tovino Thomas's 50th film release is ARM (Ajayante Randam Moshanam). Directed by debutant Jithiin Lal, the film also stars Krithi Shetty and is an Onam release

Tovino Thomas

Tovino Thomas -led 'ARM' (Ajayante Randam Moshanam) has hit the screens. An ambitious period drama, the film also stars Krithi Shetty, Basil Joseph, Harish Uthaman, Surabhi Lekshmi, Aishwarya Lekshmi among others. Tovino Thomas, who became a favorite among audiences through the movie 'Minnal Murali', is appearing in three different roles —Maniyan, Kunjikkelu, and Ajayan in 'ARM'. The film has a brilliant team backing it and has been released in 3D. It is not often that Malayalam film dabbles in 3D even though India's first 3D film was from the very same industry.

Is Tovino Thomas's ARM worth a watch on the big screen?

Before you decide to watch the film, here are the tweets you must see before making a decision:

#ARM Review Decent Visual Delight 👌 @ttovino is in his elements & was good 👍 Rest of the actors were apt ✌️ Visuals & BGM 🔥 Screenplay was decent ✌️ Production Values👍 Rating: ⭐⭐⭐/5 #ARMMovie #ARM3D #ARMTheMovie #AjayanteRandamMoshanam #KrithiShetty #TovinoThomas pic.twitter.com/PcQXxPq8tu — Swayam Kumar Das (@KumarSwayam3) September 12, 2024
#ARM : Impressive concept but the execution is half baked. Screenplay lacks the desired impact which should have been taken care of and climax is bit downer. Technically stunning. Tovino good. Overall average film pic.twitter.com/G9JrhmZUoa — Front Row (@FrontRowTeam) September 12, 2024
#ARM First half visuals, VFX, BGM, and setting adipoli. The concept is very intriguing and fresh. Maniyan is simply next level. Tovino 🔥. The transition between the 3 timelines is not done properly in my opinion. Something somewhere feels off. Missing those "Romancham" moments. pic.twitter.com/80WorlIoao — Mollywood Fanatic (@Johnportmafia) September 12, 2024
Watched #ARM 2D Top production values. Vfx, Visuals & Art 👌 Tovino superb. Decent 1st half. Better 2nd half. Gud concept. Script & direction is mid. Slow paced & no wow moments. BGM gud at parts. Lacks the punch, bt Family audience will like. 3/5 #ARM3D #AjayanteRandamMoshanam pic.twitter.com/7GCfHmL8mn — Aditya Binu (@aditya_binu) September 12, 2024

Tovino Thomas on the 3D release of Malayalam movie ARM

Directed by debutante Jithiin Laal, the film will be released in 3D across languages in India on September 12. While one might recall the Malayalam cinema industry producing the first 3D film of India, the industry has not seen one in along time.

“Shooting with 3D cameras is a very tough thing to do. It takes more time and effort,” says Tovino to mid-day.com ahead of the release of his film.

“But what we have done is 3D conversion. People won't find out if we have shot it with 3D cameras or if it's 3D conversion because the technology has advanced and we have already got guidelines to shoot to convert it into 3D we have to shoot it in a particular way. Cinematographer was well aware of that.”

Working on a 3D film was a first for the entire team, stresses Tovino. “We all tried and put in our efforts, and I think it has come out really well. The story demands 3D.  We want to take people to this particular village called Chiyothikavu, where this story is happening some 300 years back.”

The entire story across three generations is happening in Chiyothikavu. We haven't used the 3D element just for the action set pieces. Things coming at your face in 3D was not the sole idea. We have definitely have such sequences, but the whole idea is to keep people immersed in this world.  Even if you're watching a romantic scene or an emotional scene, you're getting a 3D visual of it,” he added.

kondal movie review antony varghese
