Suraj’s 'Roy' review: An exploration of the mind with a thriller hue

A woman goes missing. Her husband files a complaint with the police. However, they face some unusual hurdles while trying to solve the case. Despite the theme, Suraj Venjaramoodu-starrer 'Roy', which premiered on SonyLiv on December 9, is not purely an investigation thriller.

Rather, it is a sneak peek into the mind of a man who is on a quest to find his wife with the help of the police.Teenu, played by Sija Philip, is a journalist-cum-writer who is on the verge of completing a controversial book. She spends most of her time at her office in the city and returns to her loving husband Roy (Suraj) at the night. However, one day she leaves after informing her husband she is on an important mission and becomes incommunicado.

In the meantime, we learn that Roy is on medication for sleep hallucinations. Can the police believe him? Or is he a mentally challenged person? 'Roy' is director Sunil Ibrahim's latest venture after 'Y' and 'Orikil Oraal', both movies, which delved deeply into the human mind.

With 'Roy' too, Sunil attempts to explore the challenges of a man, who cannot differentiate between the real and the unreal.

This attempt perhaps slows down the pace of the movie. Also, if you are looking for some grand twists, you will be disappointed that there is none. Even the climax is predictable. But the director has to be credited for attempting a fresh storyline, while also keeping a bit of suspense throughout the movie.

Suraj Venjaramoodu's Roy is a one-dimensional character. His wife is his world. We don't know much about him, his family or his line of work. Despite these, we can understand his trauma. The award-winning actor has done justice to his role as Roy. Sija Jose, who has worked in movies like 'Annayum Rasoolum' and 'Traffic', is impressive.

We have been seeing Shine Tom Chacko in several police roles. In Roy too, he is a cop, albeit a character with constraints, unlike his usual roles.Jins Baker also does his role well. Munna PM's music gels with the mood of the film.

സ്വപ്‌നവും യാഥാര്‍ഥ്യവും ഏതാണെന്ന് തിരിച്ചറിയാനാകാത്ത അവസ്ഥ. കണ്‍മുന്നില്‍ വന്നുനില്‍ക്കുന്നയാള്‍ ശരിക്കും ഉള്ളതാണോ എന്നുറപ്പിക്കാന്‍ സാധിക്കാത്ത ഒരാളുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലുണ്ടാകുന്ന അസാധാരണ സംഭവങ്ങള്‍. ഒറ്റ വാചകത്തില്‍ ഇതാണ് സുരാജ് വെഞ്ഞാറമ്മൂട് ടൈറ്റില്‍ കഥാപാത്രത്തെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന 'റോയ്' എന്ന ചിത്രം.

ചാപ്‌റ്റേഴ്‌സ്, അരികില്‍ ഒരാള്‍, വൈ എന്നീ ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ക്കു ശേഷം സുനില്‍ ഇബ്രാഹിം സംവിധാനം ചെയ്യുന്ന ചിത്രമാണ് 'റോയ് '. സുനില്‍ തന്നെയാണ് ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ രചനയും നിര്‍വഹിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്.

റോയ് എന്ന മുന്‍ ലൈബ്രേറിയന്റെയും മാധ്യമ പ്രവര്‍ത്തകയായ ഭാര്യ ടീനയുടെയും ജീവിതത്തിലുണ്ടാകുന്ന സംഭവങ്ങളെ മുന്‍നിര്‍ത്തിയാണ് കഥ പുരോഗമിക്കുന്നത്. ടീനയെന്ന നായിക കഥാപാത്രമായെത്തുന്നത് സിജ റോസാണ്. സ്വപ്‌നവും യാഥാര്‍ഥ്യവും പരസ്പരം വേര്‍തിരിച്ചറിയാന്‍ പ്രയാസപ്പെടുന്ന റോയിയെ മനസിലാക്കുന്ന ഒരാള്‍ ടീന മാത്രമാണ്.

പ്രശസ്തനായ ഒരു എഴുത്തുകാരന്റെ തിരോധാനം റോയിയുടെയും ടീനയുടെയും ജീവിതത്തില്‍ കാര്യമായ വ്യതിചലനങ്ങളുണ്ടാക്കുന്നു. കാണാതാകുന്ന ബാലഗോപാല്‍ എന്ന എഴുത്തുകാരന്‍ എവിടെയുണ്ടെന്ന് ഒരു സ്വപ്‌നത്തിലെന്ന പോലെ റോയ് മനസിലാക്കുന്നു. ബാലഗോപാലിനെ കണ്ടെത്താനായി ഇറങ്ങിത്തിരിക്കുന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കടുത്ത ആരാധിക കൂടിയായ ടീനയെയും കാണാതാകുന്നു. തുടര്‍ന്നുണ്ടാകുന്ന സംഭവ വികാസങ്ങളിലൂടെയാണ് ചിത്രം മുന്നോട്ട് പോകുന്നത്.

റോയ് എന്ന വെല്ലുവിളികള്‍ നിറഞ്ഞ കഥാപാത്രം സുരാജ് വെഞ്ഞാറമൂടിന്റെ കൈകളില്‍ ഭദ്രമായിരുന്നു. ഷൈന്‍ ടോം ചാക്കോ, ജിന്‍സ് ഭാസ്‌ക്കര്‍, വി കെ ശ്രീരാമന്‍, വിജീഷ് വിജയന്‍, റിയ സൈറ അഞ്ജു ജോസഫ് തുടങ്ങിയവരും ചിത്രത്തിലെത്തുന്നുണ്ട്. പൊലീസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്റെ വേഷത്തിലാണ് ഷൈന്‍ ടോം ചാക്കോ എത്തുന്നത്. വി കെ ശ്രീരാമനാണ് എഴുത്തുകാരനായ ബാലഗോപാലായി എത്തുന്നത്.

സംവിധായകന്റെ മുന്‍ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ പോലെ തുടക്കം മുതല്‍ ഒടുക്കം വരെ കഥയിലെ ദുരൂഹത നിലനിര്‍ത്താന്‍ ഇവിടെയും സാധിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പുതുമയുള്ള പ്രമേയം വ്യത്യസ്തമായ അവതരണത്തിലൂടെയാണ് പ്രേക്ഷകന് മുന്നിലെത്തുന്നത്.

റോയ് കാണുന്ന കാഴ്ചകളിലൂടെ ചിത്രം മുന്നോട്ട് പോകുമ്പോള്‍ ആ കഥാപാത്രത്തിന്റെ മാനസികാവസ്ഥ പ്രേക്ഷകനെയും അനുഭവിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ സംവിധായകന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. കഥാപരിസരത്തിന് യോജിച്ച പശ്ചാത്തല സംഗീതവും ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ ത്രില്ലര്‍ മൂഡ് നിലനിര്‍ത്താന്‍ സഹായിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

വിനായക് ശശികുമാറിന്റെ വരികള്‍ക്ക് മുന്ന പി ആര്‍ ആണ് സംഗീതം ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. വി സാജനാണ് എഡിറ്റിങ്. ജയേഷ് മോഹന്‍ ഛായാഗ്രഹണം നിര്‍വഹിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. സോണി ലിവിലൂടെ റിലീസായ ചിത്രം സജീഷ് മഞ്ചേരി, സനൂബ് കെ. യൂസഫ് എന്നിവര്‍ ചേര്‍ന്നാണ് നിര്‍മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്.

സ്വപ്‌നത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് യാഥാർഥ്യത്തിലേക്ക് എത്ര ദൂരമുണ്ടാകും? ആ ദൂരങ്ങള്‍ താണ്ടി ദുരൂഹതകളുടെ കെട്ടുകള്‍ ഓരോന്നായി അഴിക്കുകയാണ് സുനില്‍ ഇബ്രാഹിം സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത റോയ്. ഒരാളുടെ മാനസിക സഞ്ചാരങ്ങളുടെ അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തലായി ചിത്രം മാറുമ്പോഴും മലയാള സിനിമ മുന്‍പൊന്നും സഞ്ചരിക്കാത്ത വഴികളിലൂടെയാണ് സിനിമയുടെ സഞ്ചാരം. കൊറിയന്‍ സിനിമകളില്‍ കണ്ടുശീലിച്ച സൈക്കളോജിക്കല്‍ ത്രില്ലറിന്റെ സൂക്ഷ്മമായ പരീക്ഷണം കൂടിയാണ് ഇത്. പറയാതെ പറഞ്ഞും പുനര്‍വായനയ്ക്ക് ഇടം നല്‍കിയും കഥ പറയുന്ന ഇത്തരം സിനിമ പ്രേക്ഷകന് സമ്മാനിക്കുന്നത് വ്യത്യസ്തമായ പുത്തന്‍ സിനിമാനുഭവം തന്നെയാണ്.

ഭാര്യയെ അത്രമേല്‍ ചേര്‍ത്തുനിര്‍ത്തുന്ന റോയ്. മാധ്യമ പ്രവര്‍ത്തകയും എഴുത്തുകാരിയുമായ ഭാര്യ ടീനയാണ് അയാളുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ സന്തോഷം. ഇതിനിടയില്‍ ഒരു യാത്ര പോയ ടീനയെ കാണാതെയാകുന്നു. പൊലീസ് അന്വേഷണം തുടരുമ്പോഴും റോയിയും ആ അന്വേഷണത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമാകുന്നു. അന്തര്‍മുഖനായ റോയിയെ നയിക്കുന്നത് സ്വപ്‌നങ്ങളാണ്. അയാള്‍ കാണുന്ന സ്വപ്നങ്ങളൊക്കൊയും പിന്നീട് നടക്കാന്‍ പോകുന്ന സംഭവങ്ങളുടെ സൂചനകളായിരുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ താന്‍ കാണുന്ന സ്വപ്‌നമേത് യാഥാര്‍ത്ഥ്യമേതെന്ന ചിന്ത അയാളെ എപ്പോഴും അസ്വസ്ഥമാക്കി കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. ഈ യാത്രകളുടെ തുടര്‍ച്ചയും വളര്‍ച്ചയുമാണ് റോയ് പറയുന്നത്. ആത്മസംഘര്‍ഷങ്ങളുടെ റോയ് മലയാളി ഇതുവരെ കണ്ടുശീലിച്ച താരപരിവേഷങ്ങളിലെ പുത്തന്‍ ഭാവമാണ്.

സിനിമ പിന്തുടരുന്ന ത്രില്ലര്‍ സ്വഭാവം പ്രേക്ഷകന് അനുഭവവേദ്യമാകുമ്പോഴും റോയ് തുടര്‍ക്കാഴ്ചകള്‍ ആവശ്യപ്പെടുന്ന സിനിമകൂടിയാണ്. സിനിമയുടെ ഓരോ രംഗങ്ങളിലും ഒളിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ചില ദുരൂഹതകള്‍ തുടര്‍കാഴ്ചകളില്‍ നമ്മെ ആസ്വദിപ്പിച്ചേക്കാം. പുത്തന്‍ പരീക്ഷണങ്ങളിലൂടെ സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നതുകൊണ്ടു തന്നെ റോയ് അലസമായ മനസ്സോടെ കാണേണ്ട സിനിമയുമല്ല. റോയിയുടെ വ്യത്യസ്തമായ സ്വഭാവപ്രകൃതിയേയും അയാളുടെ മാനസികാവസ്ഥകളേയും തുറന്നു കാട്ടുന്നതാണ് ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ വെല്ലുവിളിയും സവിശേഷതയും. റോയിയുടെ വ്യത്യസ്തമായ സ്വഭാവസവിശേഷതയാണ് സിനിമയിലെ യഥാർഥ നായകന്‍ എന്നതും ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്.

ഏറെ വെല്ലുവിളി ഉയര്‍ത്തുന്ന പ്രമേയത്തെ അച്ചടക്കത്തോടെ പറയാന്‍ ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ രചയിതാവും സംവിധായകനുമായ സുനില്‍ ഇബ്രാഹിമിനു കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്. പാളിപോകാന്‍ സാധ്യത ഏറെയുള്ള വിഷയത്തെ ത്രില്ലര്‍ സ്വഭാവം കാത്തു സൂക്ഷിച്ച് പറയാനായതും സംവിധായകന്റെ വിജയമാണ്. പതിവുപോലെ റോയിയെ ഭദ്രമായി അവതരിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ സുരാജിന് കഴിഞ്ഞു. അയാളുടെ മാനസികാവസ്ഥകളും ചിന്തകളും ചെറിയ ചലനങ്ങളില്‍പോലും സുരാജ് പ്രകടമാക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ജയേഷ് മോഹന്റെ ഛായാഗ്രഹണം സിനിമയുടെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തെ ആസ്വാദ്യമാക്കുന്നതില്‍ ഏറെ സഹായിച്ചു. കഥാഗതിയെ കൃത്യമായി അടയാളപ്പെടുത്താനും ഈ പ്രതിഭയ്ക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്. വി. സാജന്റെ അളന്നു മുറിച്ച എഡിറ്റിങ് സിനിമയെ ആസ്വാദ്യമാക്കുന്നതില്‍ വലിയ പങ്കുവഹിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. പൊലീസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനായി എത്തുന്ന ഷൈന്‍ ടോം ചാക്കോയ്ക്കും ടീനയായി സിജ റോസിനും മികച്ച പ്രകടനം കാഴ്ചവയ്ക്കാനായി.

Suraj Venjaramoodu thriller Roy explores a man with a fascinating psyche

The titular character in Roy , director Sunil Ibrahim’s latest Malayalam film now screening on SonyLIV, is arguably one of the most interesting protagonists Malayalam cinema has seen in a while. Living with a ‘disorder’ that no doctor has been able to diagnose so far, Roy treads a fine line between dreams and reality. Suraj Venjaramoodu is convincing as Roy, a middle-aged man who has come to terms with his complex reality over the years. It is only with his much younger wife Teena, played by a charming Sija Rose, that he can afford to be his true self. 

The visions he manifests in his dreams, intertwined with his imagination, are as convincing to Roy as the existence of his own self. He is awkward, always unsure if his understanding of the person across him comes from their interactions with him or just his own subconscious ideations. But when lives are at stake and a police investigation is underway, can he trust his mind to tell him the truth?

As the “romantic” Roy who has developed an intense and fathomless bond with his wife, however, Suraj seems to struggle. While his counterpart Sija slips into this dynamic with ease, Suraj appears rather stoic and awkward with displays of affection, a trait out of sync with what the duo’s relationship seeks to represent. As the desperate husband seeking to separate his dreams from the tangible for his wife’s sake, however, the actor is completely in form. 

Shine Tom Chacko makes an interesting appearance as CI Ajith Easwar, a police officer distrustful of, yet intrigued by Roy. Ajith is a realist who doesn’t want to accept what is right before his eyes — the fact there might be more to Roy’s delusions than he wants to believe. The dynamic between the duo is one of the most interesting aspects of the film. 

Jins Baskar and Riya Saira also appear in notable roles in Roy . The music by Gopi Sundar doesn’t stand out but seamlessly blends in with the narrative that consistently takes centre stage. 

Roy ’s climax does leave a few things to be explored further. The film, written by its director Sunil, could also have placed more trust in the audience and cut down on the over-explanation of some plot points. Besides, though the conflict of the film is a missing case and the police investigation surrounding it, Roy is not as much a thriller as it is an exploration of its eponymous protagonist’s psyche. The film itself doesn’t appear to aspire more than that. Unfortunately, this leaves the plot struggling to live up to the expectations raised by this intriguing man and his fascinating subconscious.

Roy review: Suraj Venjaramoodu starrer mystery thriller’s interesting premise is let down by poor execution, directionless writing

Despite its 2 hour long runtime, Roy ends on a note that leaves a lot of open ends in its story, which moves at an excruciatingly slow pace.

Teena, a skilled and daring journalist, is married to Roy, a mild mannered and eccentric man whose only friend seems to be his wife. Roy’s world is turned upside down when his wife goes missing, while on the trail of a missing novelist. When the police refuse to take Roy’s complaints seriously, he decides to investigate his wife’s disappearance on his own.

A journalist goes missing while in the middle of investigating the mysterious disappearance of a writer, and her husband decides to investigate following the apathy of the police- the basic premise of Roy is nothing new. But Sunil Ibrahim decides to take a different route with his fourth directorial, in a way that makes Roy stand apart from the rest of his filmography. The titular protagonist is no ordinary distraught husband, but someone who is in possession of a special gift, which comes in the form of visions or ‘dreams’ he has that help him know things which no ordinary person in his position can.

One would think that the inherent intrigue in such a rarely explored subject would help the film rise above your usual run of the mill mystery thrillers. But banal writing and poor storytelling squanders every bit of promise the story had, leading to a dragging and directionless film that moves at an excruciatingly long pace.

The first strike definitely comes in the form of the lead couple, Roy and Teena, essayed by Suraj Venjaramoodu and Sija Rose. Although the duo’s strong bond and devotion to each other forms the driving point of the story, it hardly translates onto the screen in an authentic way. Instead of painting a convincing portrait of a loving couple who understand and uplift each other, the duo’s chemistry comes off looking forced and inorganic, and there are few moments where their relationship comes off as genuine. Granted, the huge age difference between the two have been written into the story, but the several moments of Teena’s instant, yet inexplicably deep connection to Roy, which borders on obsession even, come off as problematic and even dodgy. The interactions between the couple look incredibly contrived, made all the more worse by the cliched lines the script has them feed each other.

The characterisations of the lead characters also leave a lot to be desired. Roy’s characterisation of a tortured man cursed with a gift he did not ask for, and Teena’s faultless dedication and understanding of her husband’s darkness, as well as her righteousness, comes off as very one dimensional.

The sluggish pace of the film is yet another element that brings the film down, and a huge chunk of the film seems to consist of nothing but filler sequences which seem to serve no purpose at all. The elements of Roy’s special gift, which offered a lot of promise as his visions blur the lines between what is real and not, fall short of becoming impactful due to the poor execution, as well as half hearted performances by a cast who the script gives little to work with. The way Roy’s specialty is incorporated into the story lacks nuance, with his visions haphazardly inserted into the story to roughly move it along. The way the film's story unfolds in the third act leaves a number of open ends, with many questions remaining unanswered, and lacks closure.

Although Roy’s unique concept held promise to be spun into a taut thriller, directionless writing and poor execution lead to a dawdling thriller with barely any bite, made worse by half hearted performances by the lead cast.
