50 million Americans (37% of the US population) consume fast food daily: the US is undeniable the biggest market for fast food worldwide. Yet, before you can open your own fast food restaurant, you will first need to prepare a solid business plan.

Indeed, a business plan is mandatory for any business that seeks funding from private investors or to get a loan from a bank (like a SBA loan ).

In this article we go through, step-by-step, all the different sections you need in the business plan for a fast food restaurant . Use this template to create a complete, clear and solid business plan that get you funded.

1. Fast Food Executive Summary

The executive summary of a business plan gives a sneak peek of the information about your business plan to lenders and/or investors.

If the information you provide here is not concise, informative, and scannable, potential lenders and investors will lose interest.

Though the executive summary is the first and the most important section, it should normally be the last section you write because it will have the summary of different sections included in the entire plan.

Why do you need a business plan for a fast food?

The purpose of a business plan is to secure funding through one of the following channels:

  • Obtain bank financing or secure a loan from other lenders
  • Obtain private investments from investment funds, angel investors, etc.
  • Obtain a public or a private grant

How to write your fast food’s executive summary?

Provide a precise and high-level summary of every section that you have included in the business plan of your fast food restaurant. The information and the data you include in this section should grab the attention of potential investors and lenders immediately.

Also make sure that the executive summary doesn’t exceed 2 pages in total: it’s supposed to be a summary for investors and lenders who don’t have time to scroll through 40-50 pages, so keep it short and brief.

The executive summary usually consists of 5 major sub-sections:

  • Business overview : start by introducing your fast food restaurant, where it is located, how big it is (space, seating arrangement, counters, etc.) and give a brief of the fast food items (a sample menu) that you want to sell as well as their average prices. Also, mention whether you plan to open an independent fast food restaurant or a franchise restaurant instead.
  • Market overview : should contain an overview of the expected market size , target audience , and demography. Also provide here a quick overview of your competitors
  • People : first, introduce your fast food’s management. Provide a brief (no more than a couple of sentences each) of the experience and track record of the team. Also, speak about your hiring plans: in other words, how you intend to run the business (what are the different teams and how many employees will you hire?)
  • Financial plan : how much profit and revenue do you expect in the next 5 years? When will you reach the break-even point and start making profits ? You can also include here a chart with your key financials (revenue, gross profit, net profit )
  • Funding ask : what loan/investment/grant are you seeking? How much do you need? How long will this last?

2. Fast Food Restaurant Business Overview

In this section of the business plan, you will provide details about your fast food restaurant.

You must answer here some important questions that potential investors and lenders often ask about your business and operations. Here are some examples of questions you must answer:

  • What is the rationale behind your opening a fast food restaurant today?
  • What’s the fast food restaurant’s location and why did you select that location?
  • Why did you select the type of fast food restaurant you want to open?
  • What will be the food items you will offer?
  • What will be your pricing strategy and why?
  • What is your expected customer footfall?
  • What will be the legal structure of your company?

a) History of the Project

Any business overview must start with explaining the history of the project. There are 2 components here:

  • Passion & experience of the business owner
  • Rationale behind starting a fast food restaurant today

Passion & experience

You may or may not have prior experience. If you have experience, speak about it and how it will help you to run your business. For instance, you may have been a regional manager of a leading fast food brand for 5 years, and now you want to start your own fast food restaurant and use your knowledge to run it more efficiently.

Is there a certain problem (or perhaps, a set of problems) that your fast food restaurant will try to solve when it comes into existence? For example, there may not be any fast food restaurant offering tacos and burritos while there are enough restaurants offering burgers, fries, chicken sandwiches, pizzas, etc.

But that’s not all! The market must be suitable for a business to exist and thrive. For instance, if you are trying to open your fast food restaurant offering tacos and burritos in an area where there isn’t enough demand for those food items, you may run into losses.

Similarly, if the major chuck of the target audience is between the age group of 15 to 25 with limited income, offering high-priced food will not provide the price/value relationship they seek. Offering pricey food will only stretch their budget.

The rationale behind your project must be backed up by a thorough analysis of the industry in the area where you plan to open your fast food restaurant. This is what we will cover under Market Overview further below.

b) Business Model

This section of the Business Overview should explain what type of business model and fast food restaurant you want to open. For example:

  • Will you open a franchise or an independent restaurant instead?
  • Will you buy an existing fast food restaurant and do some remodeling, or will you start a new fast food restaurant and design it from scratch?
  • Will you go for a traditional brick-and-mortar store or will you settle for a mobile vending model to reduce overhead?

What are the different types of fast food restaurants?

There are multiple types of fast food restaurants. Some of them that you may consider include, but are not limited to:

  • Burgers & Fries : In this type of fast food restaurant, you will specialise in burgers and fries, but you can also sell shakes, smoothies, etc.
  • Tacos & Burritos : you may go for variations like Mexican-American fusion or original Mexican soft corn tortillas for example here
  • Chicken : Your specialty may be chicken based. For instance, you can sell fried chicken, chicken sandwiches, etc.

Apart from food-based selection, you can also choose whether you want to open a sit-in restaurant, drive-through or food truck instead.

c) Products & Services

It is needless to say that the products that you will sell through your fast food restaurant will depend on the type of restaurant you are opening. So give here an overview of the menu you will offer your customers. Yet, if there are too many products, highlight the main ones and save the rest for the appendix instead.

Another important thing that you must mention is how you are going to source the products. For example, if you are opening a burger and fries restaurant, will you be baking the buns yourself or buying mass-produced buns?

Finally, a fast food restaurant is all about delivery speed. People visiting these restaurants are busy and usually don’t have the luxury of sitting for long durations. You can still add a few services like mobile and laptop charging areas (those who visit your restaurant), home or office delivery for super-busy folks who can’t step in, etc.

d) Pricing Strategy

This is where you will provide an overview of your pricing strategy. For instance, you may sell the products at a lower price point than your competitors because you enjoy a bulk purchase discount from the product supplier.

Again, product quality matters. For example, if you are using organically farmed products, you may charge higher than your competitors. Similarly, if you are creating something super unique, you may charge extra. The size and quantity also factor in. Think of the Quadruple Bypass Burger or the Octuple Bypass Burger of the Heart Attack Grill which cost $20.25 and $29.80 per burger.

Your pricing strategy will also significantly depend on the spending capability of the target audience in your area of operation. 

For example, if you are trying to sell super high-quality fast food products in a neighborhood where the target audience is major students, teens, and day laborers with no, limited, or fixed income, highly-priced products may not sell well. Thus, you must always factor in the spending power of your target audience while developing your pricing strategy.

Pricing table

It’s always good practice to create a pricing table to provide price ranges for your products. Yet, you don’t need to provide exact pricing for each product.

For example, if you are selling different variants of beef burgers, you don’t need to list each burger. Instead, just mention something like: Beef burgers – $7.50 to $15.50.

Offering a pricing chart is important as it will allow investors to tie your pricing strategy with your financial projections later on.

e) Legal Structure

Finally, your business overview section should specify what type of business structure you want. Is this a corporation or a partnership (LLC)? Who are the investors? How much equity percentage do they own? Is there a Board of Directors? If so, whom? Do they have experience in the industry?

3. Fast Food Market Overview

A complete understanding of the market where you want to operate is important for the success of your business. That’s also something you must showcase in your business plan.

For example, if you are trying to sell high-calorie burgers to a health-conscious target audience, you will probably fail. Similarly, if you are trying to sell high-priced food items to day laborers with very limited income, they will most likely not buy from you.

Therefore, you must cover here 3 important areas:

  • Industry Size & Growth : how big is the fast food industry in your area? What is its growth rate (or decline rate) and what are the factors contributing to its growth or decline?
  • Competition Overview : how many competitors are there? How do they compare vs. your business? How can you differentiate yourself from them?
  • Customer Analysis : who is your target audience? What type of fast food products do they prefer? How regularly do they eat fast food? How much do they spend on fast food per month?

a) Fast Food Industry Size & Growth

How big is the fast food industry in the us.

According to Zippia , the US fast food industry market size in 2021 was worth $297 billion, and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.1% over 2020-2027.

When it comes to the number of fast food restaurants, there were 197,653 in 2021: that’s an average annual turnover of $1,500,000 per restaurant..!

How big is the fast food industry in your area?

After getting a clear picture of the fast food industry in the US as a whole, narrow down to your location. Yet, you may not find this information anywhere (at least not for free). In that case, you can use our guide to estimate the TAM, SAM, and SOM for your business. Here is an example of how to do it:

We know the average annual turnover per fast food restaurant is around $1.5 million. Therefore, if the area where you want to open your fast food restaurant has 30 competitors (say, in a 10-mile radius), you can assume the fast food industry in your area is worth approximately $45 million .

How fast is the fast food industry growing in your area?

Looking at public information online, we know that the US fast food market grew from $209 billion in 2011 to $295 billion in 2019: that’s an average of 5.14% per year..!

What about where you live? US national averages can be a great addition to your business plan, yet they don’t necessarily help to assess the fast food industry where you want to open your store.

For example, the industry might be growing in the US, but declining in your region for a number of reasons (decreasing population or disposable income, etc.).

As you likely won’t find this information online, you can instead rely on the number of fast food restaurants to calculate the average growth rate of the industry in your area.

For example, if the region had only 21 fast food restaurants in 2011 and 30 in 2019, you can assume that the average annual growth rate of the fast food industry in the area is 5.4%, in line with the US average.

b) Fast Food Competition Overview

Studying your competitors’ business models is vital. You need to understand what makes them successful or why they fail. A clear understanding of their fast food offerings, marketing strategies, etc., will allow you to provide a better service.

If your competitors are offering nearly the same products & services, then what is their market share and how do they market their products & services to attract new customers?

It is always a good idea to do some research (if necessary, physically visit your competitors without revealing your business intentions) and create a comparative table summarizing their product & service offerings, marketing strategies, target audience, etc.

Here is a sample table that you can use:

Fast Food Restaurant SWOT Analysis

SWOT stands for Strength, Weakness, Opportunities, and Threats. This analysis will help lenders and investors better understand how you compare vs. competitors as well as the overall risk and reward profile of your business.

Here is a sample that you can use as a reference:

  • Strengths : Worked as a regional manager at a leading taco & burrito chain for 5 years; master’s degree in business administration from a reputed institute
  • Weaknesses : Startup cost, no initial brand reputation
  • Opportunities : Industrial and office area with a high concentration of day laborers, contract workers, and immigrants with low income looking for low-priced yet filling food
  • Threats : Well-established brands are introducing a specialized line of low-cost food offerings to capture the target market

c) Customer Analysis

This is the sub-section where you will provide a detailed analysis of your target audience.

Some important points that you must include in your customer analysis include:

  • Age and gender distribution (you can get local demographic data from census.gov )
  • Average monthly income and disposable income
  • Average spend on fast food (per month or per year)
  • Types of fast foods they prefer
  • The expected price range for fast food
  • Inclination towards loyalty programs & free perks
  • Things they dislike about existing fast food restaurants and what they expect to be improved

You can add as many data points as required to validate your business decision. The idea here is to display your deep understanding of the target audience and their needs, preferences, and expectations. This knowledge can help you to tailor your products & services to attract new customers.

4. Sales & Marketing Strategy

This is the segment where you outline your customer acquisition strategy. Try to answer the following questions:

What is your Unique Selling Proposition (USP)?

  • What are the different marketing strategies you will use?
  • How do you intend to track the success of your marketing strategy?
  • What is your CAC or customer acquisition cost?
  • What is your marketing budget?
  • What introductory promos and offers do you intend to provide for attracting new customers?

What marketing channels do fast food restaurants use?

A few marketing channels that fast food restaurants typically use are:

  • PPC ads, Instagram / Facebook ads, etc.
  • Social media content
  • Billboards & signages
  • Loyalty programs
  • Pamphlets & flyers

It is not necessary to use all channels. Instead, you can start by focusing on a few of them, and include other marketing strategies later.

Also, you must have a fair and nearly accurate estimate of your marketing budget. Failure to display a well-planned and adequate budget for advertising and marketing may lead to investors losing confidence.

In other words, how do you differentiate yourself vs. competitors? This is very important as you might need to win customers from competitors.

A few examples of USPs are:

  • Product quality : you may be offering higher quality products vs. your competitors, for example, burger buns made from fertilizer-free organically grown wheat
  • Location : your restaurant may be located closer to your target audience and/or closer to a busy street where new potential customers can see your signage
  • Price : your products may be cheaper vs. competitors
  • Uniqueness : you may be the only taco restaurant (in an area with high population of Mexican migrants) that uses authentic Mexican-style soft corn tortillas

Your USP will depend on your business model, competitor analysis , and target audience. Whatever your USP be, it should be clear and appeal to your target audience.

5. Management & People

You must address 2 things here:

  • The management team and their experience
  • The organizational structure : different team members and who reports to whom

Small businesses often fail because of managerial weaknesses. Thus, having a strong management team is vital. Highlight the experience and education of senior managers that you intend to hire to oversee your fast food business.

First, describe their duties, responsibilities, and roles. Also, highlight their previous experience and explain how they succeeded in their previous roles.

If they have specialized training and experience (such as a professional degree in business management, managerial experience in a leading fast food chain, a proven track record of designing & executing successful marketing campaigns for famous restaurants leading to a measurable increase in ROI, etc.), add that information.

Organization Structure

Even if you haven’t already hired a general manager, administrative staff, busboy, cashier, chef, kitchen helpers, and other relevant staff members, you must provide a chart of the organizational structure defining hierarchy and reporting lines.

6. Financial Plan

The financial plan is perhaps, with the executive summary, the most important section of any business plan for a fast food .

Indeed, a solid financial plan tells lenders that your business is viable and can repay the loan you need from them. If you’re looking to raise equity from private investors, a solid financial plan will prove them your fast food is an attractive investment.

There should be 2 sections to your financial plan section:

  • The startup costs of your project (if you plan to start a new fast food, renovate your restaurant, etc.)
  • The 5-year financial projections

a) Startup Costs

Before we expand on 5-year financial projections in the following section, it’s always best practice to start with listing the startup costs of your project. For a fast food, startup costs are all the expenses you incur before you open your fast food and start making sales. These expenses typically are:

  • The leasing deposit for the space (if you rent) or to buy the real estate (if you buy)
  • Renovations and improvements
  • Equipment & appliances
  • Furniture & tableware

Of course, the startup costs depend on a number of factors, like the size of your restaurant, its location, the facilities, the menu, etc.

On average, it costs $89,000 to $266,000 to open a casual pizzeria (1,500 sq. ft.) in the US. In comparison, a 150-seats restaurant will cost more: $484,000 to $685,000.

b) Financial Projections

In addition to startup costs, you will now need to build a solid 5-year financial model for your fast food restaurant.

Your financial projections should be built using a spreadsheet (e.g. Excel or Google Sheets) and presented in the form of tables and charts in the business plan of your fast food.

As usual, keep it concise here and save details (for example detailed financial statements, financial metrics, key assumptions used for the projections) for the appendix instead.

Your financial projections should answer at least the following questions:

  • How much revenue do you expect to generate over the next 5 years?
  • When do you expect to break even?
  • How much cash will you burn until you get there?
  • What’s the impact of a change in pricing (say 15%) on your margins?
  • What is your average customer acquisition cost?

You should include here your 3 financial statements (income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement). This means you must forecast:

  • The number of covers (customers or orders) over time ;
  • Your expected revenue ;
  • Operating costs to run the business ;
  • Any other cash flow items (e.g. capex, debt repayment, etc.).

When projecting your revenue, make sure to sensitize pricing, cost of raw materials (food supplies) and your sales volume. Indeed, a small change in these assumptions may have a significant impact on your revenues and profits.

7. Use of Funds

This is the last section of the business plan of your fast food restaurant. Now that we have explained what your fast food’s business model and concept are, what is your menu, your marketing strategy, etc., this section must now answer the following questions:

  • How much funding do you need?
  • What financial instrument(s) do you need: is this equity or debt, or even a free-money public grant?
  • How long will this funding last?
  • Where else does the money come from? If you apply for a SBA loan for example, where does the other part of the investment come from (your own capital, private investors?)

If you raise debt:

  • What percentage of the total funding the loan represents?
  • What is the corresponding Debt Service Coverage Ratio ?

If you raise equity

  • What percentage ownership are you selling as part of this funding round?
  • What is the corresponding valuation of your business?

Use of Funds

Any business plan for a fast food restaurant should include a clear use of funds section. This is where you explain how the money will be spent.

Will you spend most of the loan / investment in paying your employees’ salaries and the inventory? Or will it cover mostly the cost for the lease deposit and the renovation?

  • Capitalize on the brand through expansion using franchising and product diversification, which will include catering and supermarket placement

Nudlez’s initial strategy will be focused within Washington, commencing in Seattle then within 18 months expansion into Spokane and the Vancouver/Portland metropolis. Beginning with company owned NVU’s and central production facilities, rapid expansion will then be achieved through franchising in all target areas.

5.4 OPERATIONS

NVU production will be outsourced to a manufacturer in Seattle and has been estimated at $12,500 per NVU. Each city will have company owned NVU’s, shops, a central kitchen premises and support kitchens (hubs).

Product Production and Preparation

Raw product has been sourced from selected Seattle suppliers. It is a competitive quality market, with room for a number of suppliers to diversify risk. The secret to Nudlez’ fast delivery to the customer from moment of order is the blanching and preparation process of the raw product at the central kitchen premises and hub sites. This will be overseen by our master-chef teams, adhering to strict health regulations. All ordering, stocking and quality controls will be managed on an in-house computer based system enabling usage patterns to be monitored maintaining ordering efficiency and minimizing wastage.

5.5 NVU Stocking

A unique system for NVU and store restocking, the Nudle-Rac is currently under design. Essentially providing completely removable internal sectioning to the refrigerators to hold the different meals available, it is spring-loaded so that when one meal is removed, the next meal raises to the top for easy access. At the beginning of each day, a franchisee will arrive at their support kitchen where the Nudle-Rac, preloaded with the day’s meals, will be loaded directly into the NVU’s fridge without having to remove the NVU from the van providing an efficient stocking system and minimizing the time meals spend out of refrigeration. For large catering events, support vans will provide additional pre-stocked Nudle-Racs to onsite NVU’s.

5.6 FAST FOOD RESTAURANT EXIT STRATEGY

It is Nudlez objective to be acquired by another fast food company within five years by posting large revenues and a substantial EBITDA. Additionally, merger options, as well as an IPO may be considered at that time.

After a successful career in advertising culminating in the establishment of his own Seattle based agency, Dan entered the hospitality industry. His first venture, Pad Real Thai, a Thai restaurant and takeaway situated on bustling Pine Street, was an instant hit. An innovative and funky menu, supported with clever marketing (including the use of real Bangkok Pad’s for delivery vehicles) saw the business achieve critical acclaim. Rave reviews in Short Black and Cheap Eats to name a few, were followed by televised appearances on ‘Seattle Weekly’ and Seattle’s Food Lover’s Guide. In the long term, the employee/income ratio will be approximately $125,000 per employee. Nudlez will run a lean operation with an emphasis on sales and food production. In years two and three the sales staff will grow from 20 to 110 people, and the production staff will grow from 12 to 277 people. The investor’s $1,500,000 will be structured as a redeemable note, convertible to 15% shareholding in Nudlez at the end of year-3.   • Total employment in the expanded Seattle CBD areas is estimated at over 350,000. Nudlez expects to capture less than 2% of this daily market from CBD NVU’s and stores
  • Seattle and Portland/Vancouver are similar sized markets, with Spokane being approximately half the size. Revenue estimates reflect these ratios.
  • Gen-1 and first Gen-2 NVU, testing and development costs totaling around $75,000 already spent by inventor are not included in financials.
  • First Gen-2 NVU will obtain homologation, meaning that the design has blanket pre-approval with local government, reducing time and cost for individual site permits.
  • First 10 NVU’s cost $125,000, including homologation.
  • Wastage is estimated at 15% across all food related product (validated in Seattle trials). This will reduce once the ‘Nudle-Rac’ and associated IT systems are in place

Walz's rural background and folksy charm don't just make for amusing stories — they've added momentum to Harris' campaign. A camouflage "Harris Walz" hat inspired by Walz's wardrobe staple sold out in minutes and raised nearly $1 million for Harris' campaign, Teen Vogue reported on Wednesday. His tactic of calling Donald Trump and JD Vance "weird" has also shifted the tone of the Democratic party's messaging around their opponents.

From winning hotdish competitions to shopping at Menards, here are some of Walz's most Midwestern moments.

As a social studies teacher at Mankato West High School, Walz also coached the football team.

Walz helped lead Mankato West to their first state championship victory in 1999 as the team's defensive coordinator.

"When I took the job, they said, 'Well, we're kind of struggling. We were 0-27,'" Walz said in an interview on "Pod Save America." "But I had some other coaches I worked with who were great guys and we said, 'This is nonsense. Let's just turn this thing around.' Three years later, state champion. Now, they're the state powerhouse."

While he held the role of football coach, Walz also served as the faculty advisor for the school's Gay Straight Alliance.

In a recently unearthed video from Walz's 2018 gubernatorial campaign shared by the progressive news site Daily Kos , Walz filmed himself sharing a car maintenance tip for fixing a burned-out headlight on a 2014 Ford Edge.

Instead of replacing the entire light, Walz said, the repair could be made with a $7.99 headlight harness from an auto shop.

"Just clip off the back, use some shrink-wrap connectors on there, tape it back together, and put it back in," he said. "It's about a five-minute fix and you're back on the road safe and sound."

Walz ended the instructional video by urging constituents to vote ahead of election day.

He's an avid fan of the Minnesota State Fair and has participated in various activities on the fairgrounds.

In 2019, Walz put his skills to the test in the Minnesota State Fair 's annual butter-carving contest. He sculpted a school bus in honor of the impending start of the academic year.

Russia has summoned Italy's ambassador in Moscow after journalists entered the Kursk region. 

The Russian foreign ministry said the official had been summoned over an "illegal border crossing" by a team of correspondents from Italian state broadcaster RAI. 

It said the team had reported from Ukrainian-held parts of Kursk earlier this week. 

"A strong protest was expressed to the ambassador in connection with the actions of the film crew of the Italian state television and radio company "RAI", which illegally entered the territory of the Russian Federation to cover the criminal terrorist attack of Ukrainian militants in the Kursk region," it said on Telegram. 

"In gross violation of Russian legislation and elementary rules of journalistic ethics, the Italian correspondents used their stay in our country to whitewash the propaganda support for the crimes of the Kyiv regime." 

It said the actions of the journalists fell under Russia's criminal code and authorities were taking steps to "establish the circumstances of the crime". 

On Tuesday 6 August, Ukrainian forces launched their invasion of Russia's Kursk region. 

The offensive came as a shock, with Russian officials scrambling to respond as troops and armour poured across the border. 

The Ukrainian operation has been taking place under tight secrecy, with participating forces reportedly only told about it a day before it began.

Since then, fighting has continued and Ukraine has been able to advance further into the region. 

Yesterday, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his troops had captured the largest Russian town to date - an area called Sudzha. 

Now, Ukraine's military has released footage purporting to show day one of the Kursk offensive. 

In the clip, a Ukrainian tank fires at the Sudzha border crossing terminal.

At least three Russian soldiers are seen signalling their surrender before a larger group exit the rubble of the terminal.

An even larger group of Russian prisoners are seen walking towards Ukrainian territory.

Ukraine is "strengthening" its positions in Russia's Kursk region, but the frontline is still its "top priority", Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said. 

In a post on X, the Ukrainian president said the information came from a report by the armed forces commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. 

Briefing Mr Zelenskyy via video link, Mr Syrskyi said Kyiv's forces were advancing 1km to 3km in the Kursk region. 

He also reported fighting in the area of Malaya Loknya - some 11.5km from the Ukrainian border. 

Posting about the report, Mr Zelenskyy said: "The Kursk region operation - we are strengthening our positions and replenishing 'exchange fund' for Ukraine. I am grateful to each of our warriors." 

"The frontline remains our top priority, particularly the Pokrovsk and Toretsk directions," he added.

Earlier today, Ukraine ordered the evacuation of Pokrovsk in the eastern Donetsk region. 

The order comes as Russian forces continue to push along the frontline in a bid to capture more territory in Ukrainian-controlled areas of Donetsk. 

Ukraine has destroyed a bridge over a river in Russia's Kursk region, Russian state news agency TASS has reported. 

The bridge, which crosses the River Seym, links areas of Kursk that are still controlled by Russia and areas where Kyiv has made advances. 

Its destruction has made civilian evacuations harder, TASS reported, citing Russian security officials. 

A mass evacuation is currently under way in the Glushkov district in the region, which is home to around 20,000 people. 

Earlier today, reports started to emerge that the bridge had been partially damaged in an attack. 

The Kremlin-aligned Mash Telegram channel then reported the bridge was struck by a rocket and had collapsed. 

Russian and Ukrainian authorities have not yet commented on the attack.

Last week, Ukraine launched a surprise invasion of Kursk, with Volodymyr Zelenksyy saying yesterday that his troops had captured the town of Sudzha in the region. 

Ukraine has set up storage facilities to hold and send aid to Russian civilians in Kyiv-held parts of Kursk, the country's interior minister has said.

The units have been set up in the northern part of Ukraine's Sumy region, which is on the Russian border and where Kyiv's troops launched their incursion from. 

Ukraine has said it has taken control of 82 settlements in Kursk after it launched its cross-border attack on 6 August. 

"The citizens abandoned by Russia are mostly elderly people, people with disabilities, and families with children," minister Ihor Klymenko said on Telegram. 

"They need food, water and medicine," he added. 

During a trip to the Sumy region, Mr Klymenko said about 150 food parcels had been sent to civilians in the area.

Kyiv officials have said they plan to create evacuation corridors from the Kursk region and to open access to international humanitarian missions.

Russia has called the Ukrainian incursion a "major provocation" and vowed to retaliate with a "worthy response". 

Ukraine's Olympic fencing champion has sold her sabre at auction to raise money for her country's war effort. 

Olga Kharlan's sabre sold for 10 million hryvnias (£188,075) during the auction for the Serhiy Prytula Charity Foundation. 

In a post on Facebook, the charity said: "Thanks to Olga for such a valuable artifact. 

"This sabre has already brought one victory, and its price will soon bring victories on the battlefield." 

Kharlan won Ukraine's first medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics after beating South Korea's Choi Sebin 15-14 for the women's sabre fencing bronze. 

At least two people have been killed and several have been injured after shelling hit a shopping centre in the Russian-controlled part of Donetsk, Russian state news agencies have reported. 

"Preliminarily there is information about at least two dead", the TASS news agency cited local operational services as saying, adding that the number of dead could rise. 

Local authorities were quoted as blaming Ukraine for the attack. 

In our 14.40 post, we told you the Kremlin-installed governor of the city, Denis Pushilin, had said the strikes sparked a fire of more than 10,000 square metres at the "Galaktika" shopping centre. 

He also said seven people had been injured.

The Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine was illegally annexed by Russia in 2022, despite its forces only partially controlling it. 

In recent days, Russia has been pushing forward to the northwest of Donetsk, with Ukraine ordering the evacuation of the nearby city of Pokrovsk in response. 

Pokrovsk, which has been in Moscow's sights for several months, is one of Ukraine's main defensive strongholds and a key logistics hub in the region. 

Its capture would compromise Ukraine's defensive abilities and supply routes. 

The Russian defence ministry has released a video purporting to show new recruits training for an "assault detachment". 

In the clip, which has not been verified by Sky News, a group of people in army uniforms run from the back of a vehicle and fire weapons across a piece of dry land. 

In a post on Telegram, the ministry said the recruits were practising capturing enemy strongholds at a training ground. 

It added that servicemen who helped capture a village in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region were preparing the fighters for their units. 

Donetsk, which was illegally annexed by Russia in the early days of the war, is partially controlled by Moscow's forces.

Once the troops are trained, they will join forces fighting in the south Donetsk area, the ministry said. 

A shopping centre in Russian-controlled Donetsk city has been destroyed in what Russia has branded as a Ukrainian attack.

Earlier, Denis Pushilin, the Kremlin-installed governor of the city, said the apparent strikes sparked a fire of more than 10,000 square metres at the "Galaktika" shopping centre and injured seven people.

Black smoke has been pouring from the building in the aftermath of the blaze.

The eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk is in "real trouble" as Russian forces quickly close in, says our defence and security analyst Michael Clarke .

While Russia is pulling forces from elsewhere, including Kaliningrad and the Crimea peninsula, in response to Ukraine's invasion of Kursk, troops are staying put in Donbas, where Russia has been making steady advances for months.

Moscow is focusing its efforts on the Donetsk region and a major push towards the key Ukrainian logistics hub of Pokrovsk is ramping up.

"That's where the Ukrainians are suffering. The Russians are still moving towards Pokrovsk," says Clarke.

"Pokrovsk is in real danger now, and I think the Russians are determined to try to take it even before they take back territory [in Kursk] to prove that they're not going to be distracted from it."

Clarke adds that the "risks are rising on both sides" with Russia and Ukraine both "putting more chips onto the table".

Britain’s Violent Riots: What We Know

Officials had braced for more unrest on Wednesday, but the night’s anti-immigration protests were smaller, with counterprotesters dominating the streets instead.

After days of violent rioting set off by disinformation around a deadly stabbing rampage, the authorities in Britain had been bracing for more unrest on Wednesday. But by nightfall, large-scale anti-immigration demonstrations had not materialized, and only a few arrests had been made nationwide.

Instead, streets in cities across the country were filled with thousands of antiracism protesters, including in Liverpool, where by late evening, the counterdemonstration had taken on an almost celebratory tone.

Over the weekend, the anti-immigration protests, organized by far-right groups, had devolved into violence in more than a dozen towns and cities. And with messages on social media calling for wider protests and counterprotests on Wednesday, the British authorities were on high alert.

With tensions running high, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s cabinet held emergency meetings to discuss what has become the first crisis of his recently elected government. Some 6,000 specialist public-order police officers were mobilized nationwide to respond to any disorder, and the authorities in several cities and towns stepped up patrols.

Wednesday was not trouble-free, however.

In Bristol, the police said there was one arrest after a brick was thrown at a police vehicle and a bottle was thrown. In the southern city of Portsmouth, police officers dispersed a small group of anti-immigration protesters who had blocked a roadway. And in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where there have been at least four nights of unrest, disorder continued, and the police service said it would bring in additional officers.

But overall, many expressed relief that the fears of wide-scale violence had not been realized.

TikTok and fast-food rivalry fuel Chili's sales as parent Brinker says turnaround is taking hold

An ad campaign targeting fast-food chains and a TikTok-viral appetizer helped Chili’s same-store sales climb nearly 15% in its latest quarter.

But Kevin Hochman, CEO of parent company  Brinker International , told CNBC that the chain’s strong performance is just a sign that customers are finally catching onto the chain’s two-year turnaround.

Shares of Brinker have climbed 53% this year, bringing its market value up to $2.99 billion. However, the stock closed 10.7% lower Wednesday after the company disappointed analysts with weaker-than-expected earnings and   a conservative outlook for its fiscal 2025.

Shares were up 7% in afternoon trading on Thursday, rebounding from what BMO Capital Markets called an “overreaction” from investors. KeyBanc Capital Markets also upgraded the stock on Thursday, saying that its quarterly results were misunderstood.

Forecast aside, Chili’s made even StreetAccount’s same-store sales estimates of 8.6% growth look cautious. Its 14.8% same-store sales growth puts it in rare company, joining  Chipotle  and  Wingstop  as the few public restaurants  reporting strong traffic  and same-store sales growth at a time when many consumers are pulling back their spending, putting pressure on the industry. Chili’s casual-dining rivals like Applebee’s, owned by  Dine Brands , and  Bloomin’ Brands’  Outback Steakhouse, reported same-store sales declines for their latest quarters.

“This is just a whole ’nother step change in the business,” Hochman said. “I think sky’s the limit for this brand.”

About 60% of Chili’s growth in its latest quarter came from its $10.99 Big Smasher meal, according to Hochman. The chain promoted the deal by taking aim at fast-food rivals in TV ads.

“We had tapped into this insight that we were seeing in social media months prior, that customers were upset about where  fast-food prices  were going,” Hochman said. “The advertising clearly touched a nerve on that.”

Another successful menu item for Chili’s this quarter was its Triple Dipper, which lets diners select three appetizers and dips. The item went viral on TikTok in May. Hochman estimates that the Triple Dipper accounted for about 40% of the chain’s sales growth.

But the popularity of both the Triple Dipper and the Big Smasher created new problems for Chili’s. Its restaurants have to be prepared to serve the influx of customers, many of whom were trying Chili’s for the first time or returning after a long time away. Hochman said Chili’s has been investing in labor for the last two years — from hiring bussers to adding more cooks — but those steps pressured its bottom line this quarter.

Chili’s turnaround has touched more than just its workforce, according to Hochman.

Under his leadership, the company has spent the last two years trying to grow sales profitably. Chili’s has culled its menu, shedding about 22% of items.

Brinker has also ended some less profitable strategies to attract customers. Chili’s doesn’t offer as many coupons as it once did, and Brinker pulled the plug on its Maggiano’s Italian Classics virtual brand.

At the same time, Chili’s also leaned into value ahead of the competition, who are now rolling out their own deals. But Hochman is confident that Chili’s can hold onto its lead — and the new customers that TikTok and TV ads have brought.

“We’ve been advertising our value for almost 18 months, and a lot of folks are coming late to the game, and sometimes it’s more aggressive value, and they just don’t have the awareness that we have, because we’ve been at it a while,” he said.

But as Brinker heads into a new fiscal year, holding onto its new customers could prove to be difficult. A plethora of restaurants, from McDonald’s to Outback Steakhouse, have unveiled value meals meant to appeal to diners seeking discounts. And customers could keep cutting back their restaurant visits to save money. Prices for food away from home, which have  risen 4.1% over the last 12 months , have stayed relatively sticky.

For Brinker’s fiscal 2025, which kicked off in July, the company is anticipating earnings per share of $4.35 to $4.75 and revenue growth of 3% to 4.6%. Investors were expecting a stronger outlook for growth, given Chili’s recent success. But Brinker is playing it safe in case the economy worsens.

“It’s important for our team to set goals that we think are achievable,” Hochman said.

″[The economy] certainly has taken a turn for the worse in the past three to four months,” he added.

Former CKE Restaurants CEO Andy Puzder joined 'Fox & Friends First' to discuss why he believes investors aren't 'out of the woods' yet after the major sell-off and what the economy would look like under Kamala Harris as president. 

The financial pressures of an economic recession aren’t so much based on the numbers, but rather a gut feeling, according to one former restaurant chain CEO who’s criticizing expert interpretations of the volatility.

"Whether or not there's a technical recession, the American working and middle class feels like it's in a recession," former CKE Restaurants CEO Andy Puzder said Wednesday on " FOX & Friends First ."

"And I think that's probably more important than whether or not economists determine there's a technical recession."

A technical recession is a short-term economic downturn in which there have been two consecutive quarters of negative growth.

Recession fears seemingly materialized earlier this week as indexes resumed a downward spiral from the week prior, with Dow shedding 1,033.99 points, or 2.6%, on Monday, while the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 fell 3.43% and 3%, respectively.

The Dow and S&P 500 closed out their worst day since September 2022, and now, the majority of investors are already pricing in an 84.5% chance of a 50 basis point reduction during the Fed's meeting on Sept. 17-18, according to the CME Group, which tracks trading.

"You're going to see people doing what you call buying into the dip: stocks go down in price, you want to get in and buy," Puzder explained. 

However, the former CEO stressed that the "problem here" for the past three and a half years is inflation. 

"Americans, they've exhausted their savings accounts. They've ramped up their credit cards to where we have very high default rates. And we're seeing historic levels of credit card debt, and wages not kept up with inflation," he explained.

"So," he continued, "Americans don't have the money they had to spend, particularly during the pandemic with government handouts… And when people are suffering from inflation, they're not buying goods, businesses don't grow, they don't hire people… So we end up where we ended up."

During his tenure, Puzder oversaw operations at popular chains like Carl’s Jr., Hardee’s and Red Burrito. When traveling abroad for work, the ex-CEO claimed that fast-food meals are like a luxury purchase — a trend starting to take heed domestically .

"There was a survey a couple of weeks ago, they said 78% of the people in the United States consider a fast-food meal a luxury. So going to McDonald's has become a luxury in this country. I saw Credit Karma had a survey out within the last day or so, they said 50% of parents in America are going to have to give up essentials to purchase school supplies this year," Puzder detailed.

And heading into November’s general election as a Trump campaign surrogate, the former CEO argued Americans have a "very clear choice" to make, supporting a platform "that views the American people as a solution, American businesses and jobs and prosperity."

Groceries are expensive, but they don’t have to break the bank. Here are some tips to save

NEW YORK (AP) — If you’ve noticed that you’re paying more than before for the same amount of groceries, you’re not the only one. Inflation is easing , but grocery prices are still high — up 21%, on average, since inflation started to surge more than three years ago.

Unlike some other items, you can’t just stop buying groceries when they get pricey. There’s nothing you can do about inflation, but you can find ways to save on groceries so they don’t heavily affect your wallet or your eating habits. These include using coupons, budgeting and buying in bulk.

Here’s are some expert recommendations for saving on groceries:

Try coupons

Kiersten Torok started using coupons back when she was in high school, after her parents lost their jobs during the 2008 recession. She began relying on them even more in 2020, when she lost her own job during the pandemic. Now she’s using her social media platform to help others learn how to save.

“When times like these come up, coupons are a necessity for so many Americans,” said Torok, known on Instagram and TikTok as Torok Coupon Hunter .

Many might think that using coupons means cutting them out of a magazine. While you can certainly still do that, there are now easier ways to get the discounts. Many stores, like Walmart and Target, have coupons available on their apps.

“All you have to do is scan an item in a store, the coupons pop up on your app and then they automatically apply in the register,” Torok said. “It’s become much more streamlined.”

One of Torok’s coupon golden rules is: Never pay big for toothpaste — there’s always a combination of coupons and offers available. For anyone who wants to try couponing, Torok recommends that you first start using them at your favorite store and never buy things you don’t need, even if there’s a big discount.

Apps like Flipp , which lets you browse for coupons from all major grocery stores, and Ibotta , an app that gives you cashback for using coupons, can make your journey with couponing easier.

Track current spending

Making a budget is a key to keeping grocery spending under control, and the first step is to track how much you’re already spending. Start by reviewing how much you have spent on the last few times you’ve gone grocery shopping, recommended David Brindley, deputy editor for AARP Bulletin .

If you don’t keep receipts from past grocery runs, try looking at your bank account statement and adding up the grocery charges. Once you know how much you spend on groceries, set a goal, for example, staying within a specific budget or reducing your spending.

Review what you already have

You need a plan, but before you make one, ensure you know what you currently have in your fridge and your pantry. Sarah Schweisthal, personal finance expert and social media manager at budgeting app YNAB , recommends taking everything out and making an inventory so you don’t buy duplicates of things you already have on hand.

Brindley also recommends planning to cook multiple meals with similar ingredients, which saves money and also cuts down on food waste.

Make a plan

Once you’ve tracked your spending and inventoried what you already have, the next step is to make a plan. Write down the items you’re looking to buy and your estimated cost, making sure you stay on budget. Meal planning for the week or month can be a good way to stay on top of your spending, Schweisthal said.

Going up and down the aisles can sometimes make you crave things that you haven’t planned for, like a snack or a new dish. If you foresee that it’ll be hard for you to stick to your list, include some flexibility in your plan, such as allotting a specific amount to buy snacks or a random item you see at the checkout line.

“I think having flexibility in a plan actually helps you stick to it more,” Schweisthal said.

Making a plan can be as simple as writing down a list on paper or in your phone’s notes app. Or, you can use apps that specifically help you with meal planning such as AnyList or Mealime .

Shop online

If you tend to wander off your grocery list because every time you go to the store you buy things you don’t need, shopping online and picking up curbside is a good workaround.

“I 100% recommend sitting down Sunday morning and just looking at the stores and comparing the items you need for the week, especially with things you can get for curbside pickup,” Torok said.

If you buy your groceries from multiple stores because each has better prices on some items, ordering ahead of time can also save time.

Involve your family in saving

If you are in charge of buying groceries for your entire family, it can be beneficial to include them in your grocery budgeting routine. For Torok, this has meant teaching her children how to scan coupons while they shop.

Since buying in bulk can be very cost-effective. Brindley also recommends that you team up with a friend or a family member to buy specific items in bulk and share the discount.

Food sharing apps

Lastly, you can save money by using food-sharing apps such as Olio, which connects people around their community to share extra grocery items, and Too Good to Go, where you can buy surplus food at a discount.
