Quincy School District to restrict use of cell phones

Quincy Middle School Principal Scott Ramsey, pictured at a February meeting, said a new policy governing cell phones is designed, in part, to reduce distractions in the classroom. CHERYL SCHWEIZER/COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD

QUINCY — Student use of cell phones in the Quincy School District will be restricted during the school day under the provisions of a new policy to be implemented Nov. 12.

“We would kick it off right after parent conferences,” said Quincy Middle School Principal Scott Ramsey during a presentation at the Aug. 13 Quincy School Board meeting.

Quincy Superintendent Nik Bergman said different restrictions will be implemented at different grade levels.

“At K-5 (the phone) needs to be in their backpack,” Bergman said. “We’re seeing more and more students in school — the early elementary, even third grade — with a cell phone than we used to in the past.”

Quincy High School students will be able to access their phones, but only at specific times during the school day.

“The biggest change at the high school is that cell phones will no longer be allowed in classrooms as an educational tool,” Bergman said. “They can be used during lunch and passing periods, and that’s it at this point.”

Quincy Middle School students will be required to keep the phone in a school-issued pouch with an electronic lock. Middle school students will be required to turn off the phone when they get to school each day, put it in the pouch and store in a locker or backpack until classes are dismissed for the day.

“There are stations around the school that are put out at the end of the day where they can demagnetize the pouch,” Bergman said. “If they have to talk to their parents, there will be a place in the office where they can demagnetize (the lock).”

Ramsey said that cell phones have brought challenges with them, in Quincy as well as other districts.

"There are a lot of school districts that are moving to a phone-free environment in their schools, especially their middle schools,” Ramsey said. “They’re doing so because of the different problems and concerns that they have faced, the learning concerns that are happening in middle schools especially. We’re facing similar problems and issues in our building too.”

Ramsey said phones in the classroom are a distraction; students want to look at them when they get a new notification, even if they’re supposed to be paying attention to the teacher. Social media also has contributed to bullying, Bergman said in an earlier interview.

"I would say the overwhelming majority of our bullying incidents start on social media. And it’s generally out of school hours, then it comes into schools,” Bergman said.

Phones have changed the dynamic of bullying as well, he said.

“Pre-cell phone, the student could go home and get away from it. Now there is no escape for some of our students, or it happens outside of schoolhouse walls,” Bergman added.

Assistant QMS Principal Greg Martinez said his research indicates social media use contributes to increased mental health problems among young people.

Students who violate the policy will have their phones confiscated, and parents will be contacted if there are repeated violations. Accommodations will be made for students who must have access to their phones, a chronic medical condition being one example.

“We’ll have different opportunities to talk to parents,” Ramsey said, starting with the open house at each building at the beginning of the school year.

MagicSchool: How to Use It to Teach

MagicSchool uses AI to help with teaching across a range of areas for an all-round offering

MagicSchool

MagicSchool AI is being used by more than 2.5 million educators, at the time of publishing. That's an impressive number when you consider how in their infancy most AI tools still are. Unlike many others, however, this does much more.

The point of AI in the classroom is to make life easier and free up time for educators to focus on actual teaching. With this in mind, MagicSchool AI offers a suite of tools designed to help speed up and make admin and teaching far easier.

From tools to build rubrics and images to generating assignments or even crafting emails -- this has something for nearly everything a teacher could want. The student-specific part of the tool is designed to embrace AI use in class, since kids will be using this in their future, so they can learn from it now.

This guide lays out all you need to know about MagicSchool in your class.

What is MagicSchool?

MagicSchool AI is a suite of smart apps designed to help teachers and students in class the beyond. From making admin easier to enhancing teaching resource quality, there is a tool for most needs when it comes to education.

The company calls this a "one-stop shop for AI in education", which is very appealing for someone new to this who wants it all in one place. This platform certainly does a good job of making everything consistent in terms of ease of learning and uptake for teachers new to AI.

The idea is to offer useful tools for teachers, and students, so that workflow can be improved while also educating users in the developments and offerings of AI at the same time.

Tech & Learning Newsletter

Tools and ideas to transform education. Sign up below.

At time of publishing there are more than 60 tools for teachers and more than 40 for students to use. These are all designed specifically for education so these should be safer and with better outputs than generic AI systems might offer.

MagicSchool

How does MagicSchool work?

MagicSchool is available to use for free and simply requires you to sign up, either with an email address or by using an account with Google, Microsoft Azure, or SSO. Once you've done that you can begin using the tools right away.

You're then asked to give some details to build a profile but don't have to. You're given a short best practices guide and a video walkthrough to cover off the basics, before being able to get going.

Select the tool you want, search for something, or ask the AI chatbot to help. It's all clear and self-explanatory. You can favorite a tool by selecting the star image so that the many tools can be narrowed down to those you use the most to help make it faster and easier the more you use it.

MagicSchool

What are the best MagicSchool features?

MagicSchool has a massive selection of tools to use so it's difficult to pick any specific ones, since many educators have different needs. But some generally useful options include an image generator for specific original images, an email generator and responder for a professional output, a learning plan generator, survey creator, and tongue twisters -- to name but a few.

MagicSchool offers helpful integration with current systems so schools can use this with Microsoft, Google, or the LMS with the helpful option to export AI outputs -- which could be ideal for school-wide or district wide resources being made available.

The fact that there is a dedicated student part of this offering is a great addition. Not only can this be useful to help students but it also makes admin work more efficient. It offers a great way for students to get to grips with AI in a safe environment in which teachers can work with them to help them learn about AI as they use it in daily life.

Organization is another great feature here as teachers can tailor the system for maximum efficiency. Add favorites, sort, filter, and even save prompts and outputs, with ease -- and with more available if you have the paid tier.

MagicSchool

How much does MagicSchool cost?

MagicSchool offers a free option as well as two paid tiers.

The Free tier gets you 60+ AI tools, access to Raina the AI chatbot, 40+ tools for students, plus the AI image generator.

Go for the Plus tier, at $99.96/year , and you get the above plus unlimited AI generations, continue thread chats with Raina AI chatbot, unlimited student rooms and use, unlimited output history, one-click exports to LMS such as Google and Microsoft, plus early access to new features.

The top-end Custom tier, at a quote-based price, gets you the above plus school district-level data analysis, advanced moderation and student monitoring, custom data privacy agreement, SSO, dedicated support, customizations for school and district levels, discounts for licenses, plus FERPA and COPPPA security.

MagicSchool best tips and tricks

Start with students Setup the class with the student AI tools and show them how they work before setting tasks that allow them to produce even more work -- and progress -- in the usual timeframe.

Manage emails Use the AI input and output email tools to save time and build templates that you can use in future for faster email responses.

Rubric it This offers a super efficient way to create rubrics so give it a try and you may find yourself using them more than ever.

W.H.O. Declares Global Emergency Over New Mpox Outbreak

The epidemic is concentrated in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but the virus has now appeared in a dozen other African countries.

  • Share full article

A health worker in a yellow gown, a white mask and a blue hairnet holds a sealed plastic bag containing samples in a makeshift laboratory space in a tent.

By Apoorva Mandavilli

The rapid spread of mpox, formerly called monkeypox, in African countries constitutes a global health emergency, the World Health Organization declared on Wednesday.

This is the second time in three years that the W.H.O. has designated an mpox epidemic as a global emergency. It previously did so in July 2022. That outbreak went on to affect nearly 100,000 people , primarily gay and bisexual men, in 116 countries, and killed about 200 people.

The threat this time is deadlier. Since the beginning of this year, the Democratic Republic of Congo alone has reported 15,600 mpox cases and 537 deaths. Those most at risk include women and children under 15.

“The detection and rapid spread of a new clade of mpox in eastern D.R.C., its detection in neighboring countries that had not previously reported mpox, and the potential for further spread within Africa and beyond is very worrying,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the W.H.O.’s director general.

The outbreak has spread through 13 countries in Africa, including a few that had never reported mpox cases before. On Tuesday, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared a “public health emergency of continental security,” the first time the organization has taken that step since the African Union granted it the power to do so last year.

“It’s in the interests of the countries, of the continent and of the world to get our arms around this and stop transmission as soon as we can,” said Dr. Nicole Lurie, the executive director for preparedness and response at the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, a nonprofit that finances vaccine development.

SHL's Khalilzadeh wins best presentation award at global conference

Dr. Jalayer (Jolly) Khalilzadeh presents research at global conference.

During June’s ATLAS Annual Conference 2024: Leisure & Tourism 2030 2024, Dr. Jalayer (Jolly) Khalilzadeh of the School of Hospitality Leadership presented “A Fractal Analysis of the Global Tourism System.” An ongoing research project on the global tourism system, his presentation won the Best Presentation Award as voted by conference participants.

According to Khalilzadeh, his research is about understanding the complex structure of global tourism.

“It explores whether global tourism can be seen as a fractal network, which is a pattern that repeats itself at different scales, like the branches of a tree. The study suggests that tourism might be a fractal system because it scales in a predictable way, like how transportation and accommodation follow specific patterns. Using 24 years of data, this study finds evidence that global tourism does indeed have this fractal structure. The research also shows how this fractal pattern has been changing over time, potentially due to shifts in how different parts of the tourism system are connected. “

“Understanding this complex structure can help us better manage tourism and make it more sustainable in the long run,” said Khalilzadeh.
