Teacher’s Day in India is a very important annual event to applaud and recognize our teachers for their exceptional and extraordinary work. The Teacher’s Day is also a good medium for students to express their love and respect for their teachers. It is celebrated on 5 th September every year with great enthusiasm by the students across the whole nation. Teacher’s Day falling on 5 th September of every year is actually the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who served as the first vice-President and second President of India and also was a distinguished scholar and excellent teacher. We celebrate this day just to remember him and pay him tribute for his great acts and achievements.

Teachers Day is not about only those teachers who have taught us in Schools, Colleges or any other Institution but it is also about all those people who have ever taught us something valuable.

Why do We Celebrate Teacher’s Day?

As it is clear from its name, Teacher’s Day is a day of Teachers. According to Hindu Scripts, ‘Brahma’ is the creator of the Universe. In the same way, a teacher is the creator of the future of the Nation. A teacher is a person who never leaves teaching and keeps educating the youngsters throughout his/her life. S/He performs his/her duty with full honesty and dedication just to make his/her pupils successful and the success of his/her pupils is the actual success of the teacher.

For a good teacher, teaching is not just a profession, a service or a job but s/he regards education as a pillar of the Nation. We can never get over their beneficences so we celebrate the Teacher’s Day just to pay them respect and make them understand how valuable they are for us.

Origin of Teacher’s Day

Teacher’s Day which is celebrated across the country to mark the contribution of the Teachers and tribute to them is actually the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 th September 1888. He was an Indian Philosopher and Statesman who also served as India’s 1 st Vice-President and 2 nd President. He was honoured with several awards including Bharat Ratna in 1954, Knighthood in 1931, and Order of Merit in 1963.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan had also served as a teacher and professor during his early career. He was loved and highly respected by his pupils. He was elected the 2nd President of India on 14 th May 1962. While serving as the President in 1962, some of his friends and Students requested him to celebrate his Birthday every year as “Radhakrishnan Day”, as they wanted to pay him tribute every year for his service and achievements. Dr. Radhakrishnan denied celebrating 5 th September as his birthday, instead he requested them to celebrate 5 th September as Teacher’s Day saying “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teachers’ Day”.

Since then the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan is being celebrated as the Teacher’s Day. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan wanted the students of India to understand the importance of their Teachers and always pay them respect that is why his birthday is celebrated as the Teacher’s Day every year.

Teacher’s Day Celebration

On 5 th September, Teacher’s Day is celebrated all across the Nation with great enthusiasm and respect for the teaching community. The most of the excitement can be seen among the students of pre college schools. They eagerly wait for the day to celebrate and tribute their teachers.

Various kinds of social and cultural events and especially acts based on teachers are organised in Schools and Colleges on this day. The preparation starts few days before the Teachers Day. The students prepare speeches and poems dedicated to their teachers and perform them on the stage. They also prepare some beautiful gifts, greeting cards and flowers for their teachers.

Also many quizzes, essay competitions and other such events are organised by authorities. The celebration usually starts with cutting of cake by the teachers. It is not necessarily done in every institution but most of the institutions, Schools and Collages do so. Students also bring presents for their favourite teachers. Teachers accept the gift and respect of their students and fill them with their love and blessings. Students also decorate their School and Classroom beautifully to surprise their Teachers. The excitement for teacher’s day and the love and respect for their teachers can clearly be seen in the eyes of every student.

Importance of Teacher’s Day

Importance of Teacher’s Day in our life depends completely upon the importance of Teachers in our life.

If you are a student then you know very well what a teacher is. A teacher teaches us, guides us, amends our mistakes, scolds us when necessary and also punishes us too, but deep in our heart we all know that he is trying to make us civilized and successful by policing and improving our positive sides. To pay them high respect and follow their every direction should be our utmost aim at this age forgetting all other things. Celebrate the Teacher’s Day to pay respect to your teachers.

If you are a successful person, either employed or a businessman, then undoubtedly you understand very well the importance of a teacher and his contribution in your successful life. All that you have achieved till date and also what you will achieve in future is just because of the knowledge given to you by your teachers. The Teacher’s Day is very important for you and it brings you the chance to thank your teacher and show your love to them.

Relation between an Ideal Teacher and Student

The bonding between a teacher and his pupils is a very important and sacred part of Indian Culture. Our history is the proof of it. A student is like a bud of flower which has not bloomed yet and the Teacher is the gardener. S/He nourishes it, cares for it, and helps it in growing and smelling the entire Garden.

A good teacher is always dedicated towards developing his/her students. S/He works on making him/her able to fight and survive in the fast moving world. It does not matter if s/he lives in a hut or a small room but s/he becomes much happier to see the success of his/her students.

A student must understand the purpose of teacher and s/he can pay him/her teachers respect only by applying their teachings in life and making them feel proud. Instead of being rich and successful being a good citizen and responsible person obliges the teachers most.

A good bond between a teacher and a student has always led to success and fame. Gopal Krishna Gokhale was the political Guru of Mahatma Gandhi who asked Gandhi ji to return from South Africa and serve his Nation. It was Chanakya who guided Chandragupta Maurya to fight against Nanda Dynasty with the help of which Chandragupta Maurya established Maurya Dynasty.

Thus a good relation between a teacher and his student always has the power to change the history of the world.

So we have come to know that the Teacher’s Day is a very important day in the life of every person because every individual of the nation whether, young or old, has been a student some day. We must celebrate this day with zeal and respect to express our gratitude towards our teachers. It is not necessary to give them heavy and costly gifts but just a sense of utmost respect is enough to make them happy. A student and teacher’s relation is the most important thing in our nation that needs to be maintained for a long time to make the nation leader of the world.

Essay On Teachers Day – 10 Lines, Short and Long Essay

Essay On Teachers Day – 10 Lines, Short and Long Essay

10 Lines On Teachers Day

Paragraph on teachers day, short essay on teachers day , long teachers day essay .

Teachers help kids build a foundation for their future. They dedicate their entire lives to educating children and making schools a second home and a space for intellectual and emotional development. Even though some teachers can be stern, they allow kids to make mistakes and learn from them. They also teach about the facts and sometimes complexities of life, and are responsible members of society that make a lasting impression on kids. Teachers should be praised, appreciated, and celebrated, because if it weren’t for them, every child would have struggled to have a balance in life. And, what better way can there be than an essay to share how thankful you are to your teachers? This year, express your gratitude on Teacher’s Day with these best long and short Teachers’ Day essays.

Teachers’ Day is a time for kids to celebrate and thank the special teachers who make learning exciting and help them grow every day. Here get an idea to write 10 lines on teachers day in english.

1. Teachers’ Day is a special day when we celebrate our teachers and all they do for us.

2. On this day, we say “Thank you” to our teachers for helping us learn and grow.

3. Teachers make learning fun and exciting, so we can discover new things every day.

4. They help us when we’re stuck and cheer us on when we do our best.

5. Teachers show us how to be kind, work together, and believe in ourselves.

6. We give our teachers cards, flowers, and big smiles to show how much we care.

7. It’s a day to remember how important our teachers are in making school a happy place.

8. Our teachers teach us not just from books, but also how to be good friends and helpers.

9. On Teachers’ Day, we celebrate the love and care our teachers give us every day.

10. Saying “Happy Teachers’ Day” is our way of saying thank you for everything they do!

Teacher’s Day is celebrated on the 5th of September every year as a day to thank teachers who play a key role in the upbringing and development of kids. The day is actually the birthday of the first Vice President and the second President of India, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Dr Radhakrishnan was a professor, philosopher, and politician. He served as the Professor of Philosophy in some of the most renowned colleges in India before becoming the Professor of Eastern Religion and Ethics at the University of Oxford, and then a lecturer at the University of Chicago. He was the first Indian to hold the professorial chair at Oxford.

With his contributions in the fields of Philosophy and Comparative Religion, Dr Radhakrishnan has been quite influential in shaping the understanding of Hinduism, especially in Western countries. He defended Hinduism against Western criticism, and contributed to the formation of the contemporary Hindu identity. He has been awarded the Bharat Ratna , a knighthood, and honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit.

He was one of the many major contributors who put our country on the map, and influenced many people with his work. By now, you must know why we celebrate Teacher’s Day on his birthday. Some say that his students requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, but he asked them to celebrate the day as Teacher’s Day instead, so every teacher in the country is appreciated for their contribution. How cool is that!

Teachers are some of the few people with whom kids communicate every day. They are their sources of knowledge and inspiration. With this short essay on Teacher’s Day, you can now thank your teachers for everything they have taught you. This Teacher’s Day essay is apt for kids in Class 1, but older kids can also use it as a template, and elaborate on their thoughts.

I Am the Way I Am Because of My Teachers

Teachers are like friends who help us learn many things. Imagine a world without them – we will not know how to read or write to express our thoughts and feelings, or be creative and imaginative. The world would seem limited, boring, and uninspiring, wouldn’t it?  Our lives are this way because we have our teachers who motivate us to try new things, learn about new concepts, and be ready to explore the world when we grow up.

We must be grateful to the teachers who always strive to teach us the best things. They share their knowledge and experience through activities, games, talks, and even through books. If it weren’t for them, we would have given up on the tedious lessons we had trouble learning. I am eternally grateful to my teachers for making education interesting and easy. It is because of you, my teachers, that I feel confident and ready to take on the world every day!

Happy teachers day

For older kids, a 500-word essay could help them express their thoughts about this special day. This essay covers most aspects of the day that you can easily use for an essay-writing assignment on Teacher’s Day. Having said that, be creative, imaginative, and genuine, as that counts when it comes to making an essay a unique piece of writing.

Why the Best Teachers Are Blessings for Us?

Teacher’s Day, as we all know, was a valuable recommendation made by Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a renowned professor, philosopher, and politician, who also served as the second President of India. Dr Radhakrishnan never stopped teaching. He continued serving as Professor in many Indian and international colleges, and made our country proud! One day, some students asked him if they could celebrate his birthday, which is on the 5th of September. He, instead, asked them to celebrate the day as Teacher’s Day, and thus 5th September was established as Teacher’s Day in India.

Teachers teach, coach, and mentor during the most important days of our lives. They ensure we have a safe environment to learn, and always inspire us to achieve our goals. Some believe that education is mostly encouragement, and if you have a teacher who encourages you, you are blessed!

The best teachers know how to inspire us to keep learning, and even push, at times, to help us know our true potential. They motivate us to be imaginative and use our skills creatively when facing issues, be it at school or at home. Their teaching methods don’t just help us sharpen our aptitude; they also boost our confidence and make us and our parents hopeful about the future.

If it weren’t for these wonderful teachers, many of us would have had a difficult time understanding the difference between right and wrong, and good and evil. They help us improve our characters and build unique personalities. Their lessons and contributions are significant, which reflect on our report cards and in our decisions.

Some teachers have a gentle approach, which all of us love, while some are stringent and leave no room for error when it comes to crucial topics. We would be lying if we said the stringent approach doesn’t bother it. It bothers most of us, doesn’t it? But if a teacher has to be tough to make us do our homework or get better scores, it is all worth it.

That’s precisely why Teacher’s Day holds a very important place in our lives. Some might say that we don’t need a dedicated day for teachers, and that’s true, too, as we can celebrate Teacher’s Day every day by being respectful and cooperative towards our teachers. But, a special day gives us an opportunity to express how grateful we are to them. So, we decorate our classrooms, prepare handmade gifts, felicitate our teachers, and enjoy a snack or two on this special day with them. None of this would probably match the generosity of the teachers, but it could help us bond with them. After all, they are also the friends we make at school.

Thank You Teacher

These essays on Teacher’s Day might provide you with a template to write your own essay for your teachers. You can tweak them and add your personal experiences to make them special. The trick to a great Teacher’s Day essay is to ensure your teacher knows how grateful you are to them and that you look forward to all the useful things they plan to teach you, whether it is mathematics or a life skill. So go ahead and pen down your thoughts about Teacher’s Day and keep polishing it until you have a great essay in place!

Carter In The Classroom

Dallas isd returns to school with focus on improving math scores, north texas school ready to maintain gains achieved in the last school year, by wayne carter • published august 12, 2024 • updated on august 12, 2024 at 5:38 pm.

Back to school with a beat at Pershing Elementary in North Dallas on Monday. Nearby middle and high school students showed up to cheer on the first busload of elementary students back to school.

Parents were all smiles, most students too but the littlest learners had a few tears; it's just a part of that first day of class.

"I'm just hoping for the best. I'm just trying to stay calm so he can stay calm," said Leslie Molina referring to her son Mateo.

She tried to keep the tears away from his eyes. It's his first year here, she swapped schools so Mateo could attend a special program here at Pershing to help him grow.

"He's going into a special education telecommunication class. And they, they told me that Pershing has one of the best units for that," said Molina.

About 30% of the students here are mastering reading, their scores are higher than the district average. Carolina Vasquez is the lead reading teacher and is ready to hold on to the gains they made last school year.

"It's a fantastic curriculum, right? And again, it's a grade level. It's got a lot of rigor. The kids get to practice a lot. Teachers were kind of like, not so driven by STAAR prep, but they have to make sure, like they do the curriculum, that they have to right," she said.

City of Dallas works toward solution amid legal action from police, fire pension funds

Schools across Dallas ISD did better in reading scores district-wide, but like schools across the country lagged in math. It is the big priority set in place by Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde who visited classes Monday morning to drive home the importance of mastering the academics.

She also told reporters one of her big priorities this year was to fight for funding for Dallas ISD classrooms.

"I would be remiss if I didn't take this opportunity to say, we need everyone's help to fund schools first, let's just focus on ensuring this session that we fund our public schools so that we can continue to do the great work to pay our teachers, to pay our teacher leaders, and to ensure that our students have all of the resources that are necessary."

5 Ways to Stop Spending Money on Your Classroom

Underconsumption core for teachers.

Photos of two ways to stop spending money on your classroom

Several years ago, I heard a teacher influencer say that she never spent her own money on her classroom. At first, I honestly didn’t think that was possible, but over the last few years I have learned there are many ways to cut back on school spending. We shouldn’t be asked to carry the burden of funding our classrooms, so here are five ways to leverage your community and stop spending personal money on your classroom.

1. Get to know your librarian.

Instead of buying books for a lesson, check your school’s catalog or send your librarian an email. As a school librarian, one of my favorite roles is supporting classroom teachers. If a teacher wants a book that we don’t have, I can usually purchase it for our collection, so it is always a good idea to ask.

Librarians can support beyond books as well. One year, I used Scholastic Dollars our school had raised from the Book Fair to purchase listening stations and headphones for my kindergarten teachers.

If your school doesn’t have a library or the budget is super small, reach out to your public library. Not only do public libraries have a vast collection of books and other media, they sometimes offer surprising amenities like laser engraving, 3D printing, vinyl cutting, and more. My local library also has a seed library where you can check out a variety of seeds every season.

2. Contact local and chain businesses.

Lots of businesses support school fundraising , and many are eager to help through donations of goods as well. You just have to ask. Since I started calling businesses, I have had a bakery donate cookies for students, a restaurant donate pizza for a class party, and a bagel shop supplied our entire staff with bagels for a teammate’s baby shower. We’ve even had a local tire store donate food for a school-wide event.

If you have never reached out to a local business before about a donation, check out this article . My best advice is to ask early, be specific about what you need, and show your gratitude through a thank you note and a social media post after the fact.

3. Join a “Buy Nothing” community.

Buy Nothing was started by two friends in 2013 who wanted to reduce waste and curb spending. Now it is a huge online movement with tons of communities and ways to get involved. You can join a group and post needs you have for your classroom. Members are constantly updating with items they want to give away, so check here before you consider purchasing. This is a great place to get storage bins, art supplies, or books for your classroom.

Search for your local Buy Nothing group on Facebook or you can download the Buy Nothing app .

4. Ask legislators to get involved.

We all know that fully funding education makes a difference to students, teachers, and the community, but how often do we talk with elected officials about the realities of being in the classroom? If we have a need, we should let our local legislators know. While we might not change laws with our simple requests, asking for what we need (instead of covering the costs ourselves) makes our situation visible to lawmakers, who ultimately have the power to address education funding.

You can use the form letter below to send an email to your local legislators, and if you aren’t sure who represents you, check out usa.gov/elected-officials/ to find yours.

Dear Representative [Last Name],

My name is [X], and I am a teacher at [X school] in [X city] and a registered voter in your district.

My class is working on a project to master [X state standard]. We need [X supplies needed, include direct links/exact costs]. Would your office be interested in donating to our classroom? This project will serve [X number of students].

I hope you will consider supporting our classroom today and in the future by approving more education funding for our [X state] students. Thank you for your consideration of our project. I look forward to talking with you soon.

[Your Name]

5. Focus on building community and culture for free.

It can be tempting to purchase items for our classrooms. Matching storage containers and Pinterest-worthy decorations can help us to feel more at ease in our classroom and in control. Treasure boxes, prizes, and treats for students are fun. But they’re not really necessary. All our students really need is a clean, organized classroom where they feel safe to learn. If you’re trying to reduce spending money on your classroom this year, don’t compare your space to another teacher’s. Instead focus on meaningful actions you can take to make your students feel respected and loved. Be at the door everyday when students enter, greet them warmly. Write notes of encouragement. Email parents and caregivers when something positive happens. Teachers shouldn’t have to spend a fortune on their classrooms, and you can be an excellent teacher without spending your paycheck on your students.

New details emerge on how 6-year-old boy who shot Virginia teacher got mom's gun

The 6-year-old boy who seriously wounded his teacher at a Virginia elementary school in January said in the aftermath that "I did it" and "I got my mom's gun last night," according to newly unsealed court documents.

The child made the statements to another teacher who had restrained him after he opened fire on his first-grade teacher , Abigail Zwerner, as she sat reading to her class at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, according to a probable cause statement and search warrant affidavit.

The documents shed light on how the boy likely obtained the weapon, a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, used in the shooting. His mother, Deja Taylor, told Newport News police in an interview that she typically "stores her firearm in her purse with a trigger lock in place, or in a lock box," according to the probable cause statement.

On Jan. 6, the morning of the shooting, Taylor believed the gun was in her purse with the trigger lock installed and left on top of her bedroom dresser, according to the statement. She added that the key for the lock is kept under her bedroom mattress.

Newport News police have previously said the gun was legally purchased, but were investigating whether it was properly secured as the child's family has claimed.

Police respond to a shooting that injured a teacher at Richneck Elementary

James Ellenson, a lawyer for the family, has said Taylor believes the gun was placed on a high closet shelf with a trigger lock. But he acknowledged in May that questions still remain about how the child accessed the weapon.

"People have talked to him about that, but I don't know that any adult knows exactly how he got the gun," Ellenson told ABC News .

As part of the investigation, Taylor, 26, pleaded guilty in federal court in June to the use of marijuana while possessing a firearm. She is expected to be sentenced in October and could receive 18 months to 24 months in prison.

The narcotics were discovered during a court-ordered search of the home in connection with the shooting at Richneck Elementary School, federal prosecutors said . It is illegal to use marijuana while possessing a firearm under U.S. law.

"A search of Taylor's phone revealed numerous text messages illustrating the pervasive scope of Taylor's marijuana use," according to prosecutors. Meanwhile, "a lockbox was not found in either of the residences, nor was a trigger lock or key to a trigger lock ever found."

Taylor faces separate state charges related to the shooting of felony child neglect and a misdemeanor count of recklessly leaving a loaded firearm so as to endanger a child. A plea hearing in the case is scheduled for Aug. 15.

The 6-year-old's ability to retrieve the gun, then use it on a teacher at his elementary school is at the heart of a case that brought national attention to school safety and stunned the community when police announced the child's actions appeared intentional.

The child's family has previously said he suffers from an "acute disability" and that he had received the "treatment he needs" under a court-ordered temporary detention at a medical facility.

As part of a care plan at the school, the boy's parents were supposed to be with him daily, but were absent on the day of the shooting, officials said.

The unsealed court documents say police arrived at the classroom to find the gun and cartridge casings lying on the floor. School staff members were rendering aid to Zwerner , who was shot in her left hand and upper chest.

Virginia elementary school teacher Abigail Zwerner poses for a portrait at an undisclosed location in Virginia on March 20, 2023.

Another teacher told police that the children had returned from recess when she heard a gunshot as she walked by. Children fled from the classroom followed by an injured Zwerner. The teacher went in and saw the 6-year-old standing by his desk, and she held him until police arrived, according to the documents.

At the time, the teacher told police, the boy was making statements, including, "I shot that b---- dead," the documents said.

In response to the release of the documents this week, Ellenson reiterated that the child has "severe emotional issues."

"He is in therapy and improving daily. We wish to thank the dedicated professionals working with him," he said in an email.

A local prosecutor said in March that the 6-year-old would not face charges given that a child that young wouldn't have the competency to understand the legal system or adequately assist an attorney.

Lawyers for Zwerner have said that claims made by the family that the gun was safely secured at home "defied common sense."

In April, Zwerner filed a $40 million lawsuit alleging school administrators shrugged off multiple warnings from staff and students who believed the boy had a gun and posed an imminent threat on the day of the shooting, and did so knowing the child "had a history of random violence."

The Newport News School Board has argued that the suit should be dismissed, and that the case should go before the Virginia Workers' Compensation Commission because Zwerner's injuries occurred on the job.

A judge ruled last month that lawyers for Zwerner can begin conducting interviews and accessing records in the case.

The Newport News Public Schools said in a statement Wednesday that it cannot comment on legal actions, but that it has "worked cooperatively" with authorities and it "remains committed to ensuring the well-being and care of all students and staff."

Zwerner resigned from the school after filing the lawsuit. She told NBC News in March that she must continue to undergo physical therapy and struggles with the emotional trauma of that day.

Diane Toscano, a lawyer for Zwerner, said in a statement Wednesday that she remains "surrounded by the support of people who love and care for her, and we are thankful every day that she survived the shooting."

Kamala Harris Picks Tim Walz As Running Mate: Here’s What To Know About Him

Vice President Kamala Harris has chosen Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to serve as her running mate in the 2024 presidential race—as Harris tries to gain ground on former President Donald Trump with just over three months until the November election.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is reportedly a frontrunner to be Vice President Kamala Harris' running ... [+] mate.

Harris announced she asked Walz to be her running mate in an Instagram post Tuesday, shortly after multiple news outlets reported on the decision, praising Walz’ “convictions on fighting for middle class families” and saying what impressed her most was his “deep commitment to his family.”

Walz accepted the offer Tuesday morning, calling it the “honor of a lifetime,” and adding: “Vice President Harris is showing us the politics of what’s possible. It reminds me a bit of the first day of school.”

Walz, the 60-year-old father of two and Nebraska-born governor of Minnesota had emerged as a vice presidential frontrunner, along with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and several others in the weeks leading up to the decision.

Harris’ campaign reportedly vetted about a dozen contenders, and her rumored list was whittled to Walz and Shapiro in the hours leading up to the announcement, which was widely expected to happen Tuesday after Democratic delegates concluded voting for the party’s nominee Monday, with 99% selecting Harris.

While not at the forefront of national politics, Walz established himself as a moderate Democrat in Congress—where he served as a representative for Minnesota from 2007 to 2019—and as the governor of Minnesota, a role he’s held since 2019, where he also serves as chair of the national Democratic Governors Association.

Walz is seen as an appealing option for independents and moderate Democrats as a working-class politician with a rural background, who exudes the appearance of “someone with a lived experience that is so comparable to so many of the people in rural America,” former Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., told The New York Times last week.

Before running for office, Walz, a graduate of Chadron State College in Nebraska, served in the Army National Guard, and then worked as a teacher, first on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, where he met his wife Gwen, a fellow teacher, and then in China and later as a high school teacher in Mankato, Minnesota, south of Minneapolis.

Walz initially entered politics as a member of former Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign, a spot he took after he said some of his high school students were questioned for having a Kerry sticker when he took them to a campaign rally for then-president George W. Bush, MinnPost reported.

As governor, some of Walz’ political accomplishments include free meals at public schools, enshrining abortion rights into state law, banning conversion therapy and providing protections for gender-affirming healthcare—Walz recently defended those measures against right-wing criticism in a CNN interview earlier this month, joking: “What a monster! Kids are eating and having full bellies so they can go learn and women are making their own healthcare decisions.”

Walz also signed a bill last May expanding voting rights in Minnesota for an estimated 55,000 formerly incarcerated residents, and in 2020, oversaw the state’s response to both the COVID-19 pandemic and police brutality protests in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of police, though he faced criticism from state Republicans over his delayed response to protests following Floyd’s killing.

What To Watch For

Walz and Harris will make their first joint appearance at 5:30 p.m. EDT on Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Chief Critics

Walz has faced backlash from Minnesota Republicans largely over his actions to protect gender-affirming care—a topic that has become central on GOP tickets. John Helmberger, the CEO of Christian conservative group Minnesota Family Council, argued Walz’s executive order to protect gender-affirming care “victimizes vulnerable young people.” In the weeks leading up to the nomination announcement, Walz also sparked Republican outrage after he referred to “weird people on the other side,” and criticized Trump’s laugh and apparent obsession of Hannibal Lecter as “weird.” In response, former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy called the “weird” argument “dumb & juvenile,” while Donald Trump. Jr. responded to claims that Trump running mate JD Vance is “weird” with a video posted of Harris with a drag queen.

What Has Trump Said About Walz?

The Trump campaign attacked Walz in a video after Harris announced him as her running mate, labeling him as a “left-wing extremist.” Trump’s campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt also slammed Walz, saying it’s “no surprise that San Francisco Liberal Kamala Harris wants West Coast wannabe Tim Walz as her running mate,” claiming Walz has tried to “reshape Minnesota in the image of the Golden State.”

Who Has Supported Walz As Harris’ Running Mate?

A group of Democratic lawmakers praised Harris’ choice of Walz on Tuesday, including contenders Shapiro and Sen. Mark Kelly , D-Ariz., as well as President Joe Biden , former President Barack Obama , Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer , D-N.Y., and the Congressional Black Caucus PAC .

Will Walz’ Minnesota Connection Help Harris In November?

Presidential candidates have a long history of strategically choosing running mates in swing states or candidates who appeal to certain voters in hopes of gaining ground in the presidential election. This November, Minnesota will be a critical swing state for Harris, one of seven key states Biden won in 2020 that polls have shown to be close matches in 2024, along with Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. A Fox News poll conducted late last month found Harris leading Trump in Minnesota by six points (52%-46%) in a head-to-head match—Harris leads Trump 47%-41% in the poll when including third-party candidates such as independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (7%). That lead marks a turnaround for the Democratic ticket in Minnesota: An Emerson College poll released one week before Biden’s disastrous debate performance found the incumbent tied 45%-45% with Trump (10% undecided). Harris trails behind Trump in the four other swing states (Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and Wisconsin), according to recent polls , and the two are tied in Michigan and Pennsylvania, according to Fox News’ poll.

Since launching her campaign, Harris has landed major endorsements from Democrats, including former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. One of her biggest endorsements came last week from former President Barack Obama. Sources close to Obama had said the former president wanted to wait until after Biden’s Oval Office address last week to make the announcement, and wanted his public endorsement to stand on its own, NBC News reported. Another source told The New York Times Obama wanted to wait until Harris was officially named the party nominee, a process that could unfold as early as Aug. 1, following a rules change approved by the Democratic National Convention’s rules panel last week (party nominees are typically chosen by delegates at the Democratic National Convention after the conclusion of the primary cycle).

Key Background

Even before his disastrous performance in a June 27 debate against former President Donald Trump, Biden—the oldest president in U.S. history—had faced questions over his age, perhaps most prominently after the release of a Department of Justice special counsel report in February that found multiple cases of Biden’s memory failing. Those concerns ramped up substantially after CNN’s presidential debate, a 90-minute affair that resparked mounting concerns over Biden’s advanced age and potential cognitive decline. Facing calls from donors, lawmakers and pundits to step down, Biden ultimately announced on Sunday he would end his reelection bid, and quickly endorsed Harris for president. Harris became the presumptive nominee the next day after swiftly amassing the support of enough delegates to clinch the nomination.

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated Walz signed a bill as governor to provide tuition-free meals at participating state universities.

19 Facts About Tim Walz, Harris’s Pick for Vice President

Mr. Walz, the governor of Minnesota, worked as a high school social studies teacher and football coach, served in the Army National Guard and chooses Diet Mountain Dew over alcohol.

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, in a gray T-shirt and baseball cap, speaks at a Kamala Harris event in St. Paul, Minn., last month.

  • Published Aug. 6, 2024 Updated Aug. 9, 2024

Until recently, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota was a virtual unknown outside of the Midwest, even among Democrats. But his stock rose fast in the days after President Biden withdrew from the race, clearing a path for Ms. Harris to replace him and pick Mr. Walz as her No. 2.

Here’s a closer look at the Democrats’ new choice for vice president.

1. He is a (very recent) social media darling . Mr. Walz has enjoyed a groundswell of support online from users commenting on his Midwestern “dad vibes” and appealing ordinariness.

2. He started the whole “weird” thing. It was Mr. Walz who labeled former President Donald J. Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, “weird” on cable television just a couple of weeks ago. The description soon became a Democratic talking point.

3. He named a highway after Prince and signed the bill in purple ink. “I think we can lay to rest that this is the coolest bill signing we’ll ever do,” he said as he put his name on legislation declaring a stretch of Highway 5 the “Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway” after the musician who had lived in Minnesota.

4. He reminds you of your high school history teacher for a reason. Mr. Walz taught high school social studies and geography — first in Alliance, Neb., and then in Mankato, Minn. — before entering politics.

5. He taught in China in 1989 and speaks some Mandarin. He went to China for a year after graduating from college and taught English there through a program affiliated with Harvard University.
