ADMISSIONS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AT IIT MADRAS ARE REQUESTED TO CAREFULLY READ THE CONTENTS OF THE WEBSITE (HTTPS://RESEARCH.IITM.AC.IN/) AND THE ADMISSION BROCHURE (https://research.iitm.ac.in/brochure/2023/AdmissionBrochure.pdf) THOROUGHLY.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE PROCESS THAT IS LIKELY TO BE FOLLOWED FOR THE JANUARY-2023 ADMISSIONS TO THE ME DEPARTMENT.

Admission process.

• Shortlisting (Based on UG/PG and GATE scores)
• Online interviews of shortlisted candidates
• Recommendation for admission will be based on

• UG/PG/GATE Marks as may be applicable
• Candidates with more than 10 years after their qualifying degree will have to take an online test (in lieu of a written test)
• Final admissions is incumbent upon producing satisfactory certificates and other documents as the case may be, to the administration.

PROCESS DETAILS: FROM SHORTLISTING TO RECEIVING INTERVIEW CALL LETTERS

• Shortlisting will be done based on UG/PG/GATE scores
• An EMAIL will be sent to shortlisted candidates asking them to appear for an online interview. The email address in the application will be used for this purpose. We are not responsible if you have provided improper email addresses or other information in the application form.
• If you feel you should have been shortlisted but did not receive an email with the interview call letter, you should
• Immediately inform the department office. This should be done within 24hrs of the date specified (Interview call letter receiving date) and not later.
• You should inform the department office only by email [email protected]. Do not CALL the office or EMAIL the Head of the Department or anyone else for that matter.
• Make the subject of your email as JANUARY or JULY YEAR Admissions. In this way we can respond to you quickly and make any corrections as needed.
• In the interview call letter, a link to a google form will be provided requesting you to fill it up within a certain deadline. If you want to be considered for the interview, it is mandatory to fill this form (within the deadline). The reason for this step and what is generally asked in the form is listed below:

The form will request the following information from you

• Some details like your application number, names, etc. Please fill in the details pertaining to your application to the Department of Mechanical Engineering. If you filled in numbers pertaining to your application to other departments (even within IIT Madras), you will not be considered. We cannot reach out to you to correct your application numbers at this point.
• Whether you will appear for the online interview? The interviews will be conducted online only. We follow a very specific/strict schedule for the interviews. We would hence need to know a priori, how many candidates are willing to attend the interviews. We cannot accommodate candidates who did not fill the google form and later request to be interviewed. This process is followed so as not to upset the schedule/procedures we have planned/put forth.
• Some information concerning the infrastructure you have at your end for attending the online interviews: Since the interviews will be held online, we would like to know your cell phone numbers, WhatsApp numbers, and other infrastructure you possess, so that we can make the committee members aware as to how you will be attending the online interviews. We will also be able to communicate with you easily during the interviews in case there is some minor change.

ONLY CANDIDATES WHO FILLED THE GOOGLE FORM PROVIDED IN THE INTERVIEW CALL LETTER AND INDICATED THAT THEY WILL APPEAR FOR THE ONLINE INTERVIEW, WILL BE CONSIDERED AND PROVIDED A DATE FOR THE INTERVIEW.

THE LIST OF CANDIDATES WHO WILL BE INTERVIEWED ALONG WITH THE DATE WILL BE POSTED ON THE WEBSITE.

IMPORTANT: You are requested to periodically check the website of the department of mechanical engineering (https://mech.iitm.ac.in/meiitm/) for the following information.

• Shortlisting criteria: As we have been doing so far, the website will indicate the shortlisting criteria used.
• The list of candidates shortlisted for interview*: The list of candidates who have been shortlisted (based on UG/PG/GATE scores).
• Interview call letter receiving date*: When you can expect to receive (via email), the Interview Call Letter (if you have been shortlisted)
• Tentative dates for the interviews (Online): Exact dates will be sent via email at a later date.
• Final interview dates: Candidates who have been shortlisted and also filled the google form specifying that they will appear for the interview only will be listed along with the interview dates (See Point 4 above)
• Any changes to the procedure and dates

* IF YOU FEEL YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN SHORTLISTED AND YOUR APPLICATION NUMBER DOES NOT APPEAR IN THE LIST OR YOU DID NOT RECEIVE THE INTERVIEW CALL LETTER BY THE MENTIONED DATE, PLEASE EMAIL ([email protected]) WITHIN 24 HRS OF THE INTERVIEW CALL LETTER RECEIVING DATE. PLEASE MAKE THE SUBJECT OF YOUR EMAIL AS (Application Number)-JANUARY2022-Admissions. PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL ANYONE ELSE OR CALL US.

INTERVIEW PROCESS:

• The interviews are an examination. The dates sent to you are final and cannot be changed for any reason. If there is a change in the schedule due to unforeseen circumstances, you will receive an email confirming the same from the department.
• The interviews will be conducted online. If you want to attend the interviews,
• Please ensure that you will have very good network connection, a good laptop/smartphone with microphone and camera facilities on the interview day. All these are essential for the interview. If you do not have connection to internet and power, and laptop/desktop with audio/video or smartphone with audio/video (camera) facilities, then the interview cannot be conducted due to lack of facilities at your end.
• It is your responsibility to ensure that the committee members can see/hear you during the interview. If during the interview, the committee members were unable to interview you successfully due to poor infrastructure at your end, you will have to re-apply for the next round. You cannot be reconsidered again without another application.
• You are requested to be available to take the interview anytime during that day. Providing a specific time is impossible due to various uncertainties associated with internet connections, power outages, availability of committee members, etc. Therefore, make yourself available to attend the interview on the stipulated date.
• Do not request for rescheduling the interview for an alternative time on the scheduled day. Such requests will not be entertained and may amount to disqualification from this round of interviews and you may have to re-apply.
• No mock interviews will be conducted this time. A volunteer will email you soon with some instructions on attending online interviews.
• On the interview day, a volunteer will call you and share the google meet link with you, and ask you to join. A faculty member of the committee will admit you and begin the interview.
• The interview may be recorded (Either in full or a part of it) for archival and as proof of attendance.
• You will have to show (on camera) the following items to the Chairperson of the committee when she/he asks for it
• An identification (Preferably Aadhaar)
• Your application form which has your photograph
• You should have your camera ON at all times during the interviews (mock and actual interview). If there are bandwidth problems, the Chairperson may take a call and request you to switch OFF your camera during the interview and ask you to switch it back ON again if needed.
• The committee may ask you to write and show the answer to some questions. You should be ready with a WHITE PAPER and BLACK FELT pen. You should hold the paper up to show it on your camera for the committee members to see. So, you must be clear in your writing. Please have these ready for the interview.

IITM PhD Admission 2024 Eligibility Criteria

Here we have explained the minimum eligibility criteria to apply for Indian Institute of Technology PhD Admission 2024 in the below points with degree and marks requirements.

• Required Minimum Degree: Master Degree in concerned Subject
• Required Minimum Marks: For the general category, a minimum score of 60% or an equivalent grade in the Senior Secondary Certificate (10+2) and Bachelor’s degree. Along with a minimum score of 55% or an equivalent grade in the Master’s degree, are required. The relaxation for other categories will be provided is 5 % in all degree scores.
• Required NET Qualified: Candidates must have a valid GATE score or UGC-JRF/NET/CSIR-JRF or equivalent qualification in the relevant area
• Seat Reservation: 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, 27% for OBC (NCL), and 5% for persons with disability (PwD)
• Reservation for EWS: Those EWS members who are not included in the SC, ST, and OBC reservation programmes will receive a 10% reservation.

Candidates who obtained their UG/PG degrees a decade prior to the application deadline will undergo a IITM departmental test.

IIT Phd JRF Stipend

Successful candidates who pass the IITM PhD. Entrance Exam 2024 will be granted a Junior Research Fellowship, entailing a monthly stipend of Rs. 37,000. Those who have received fellowships from organizations such as CSIR, UGC, ICMR, DBT, and/or DST may utilize them as per the regulations of the respective funding agencies. Students admitted to IIT Madras PhD programs through the Regular scheme qualify for the Half-Time Research Assistantship (HTRA), which entails:

• Engaging in departmental work for 8 hours weekly to receive this assistantship.
•  IIT Madras PhD HTRA scholars are entitled to an Institute Fellowship of Rs. 37,000/- per month for the initial two years and Rs. 42,000/- per month for the subsequent three years. Additionally, they are eligible for House Rent Allowance (HRA) in accordance with Government of India norms.

• Students who get more than 8.0 CGPA in M.Sc. in Science Departments of IIT Madras are admitted directly to their Ph.D. program in Sciences with interviews at the departmental level.

Ph.D. in Humanities and Social Sciences

•  Master’s degree / dual degree or equivalent in relevant discipline AND Qualifying UGC – NET or JRF / CSIR-JRF / GATE Score or equivalent qualification tenable for the current year in the relevant area or international level postgraduate admission examination such as GRE (Non-HTRA)
• Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology or 5 Year BS+MS Dual degree/ 5 Year Integrated degree from Centrally Funded Technical Institute with a good academic record. 

Ph.D. in Management

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any professional discipline of minimum four years duration or Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, with a good academic record.
• Qualifying in national level examinations such as GATE/CAT/UGC-JRF/NET/CSIR-JRF or equivalent or international level postgraduate admission examination such as GMAT/GRE (Non-HTRA). 
• At least 5 years of managerial experience in lieu of the above examination. (This clause is applicable for Non-HTRA candidates only)
• Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology with a good academic record or a Master’s degree by Research in Engineering / Technology in a relevant discipline are exempted from qualifying in National level examinations.

Candidates should show an aptitude for basic sciences like mathematics, physics and chemistry. Candidates may choose to attend interviews in one of the three panels given below. They are advised to prepare for the interview on few of the topics listed under the chosen panel. Please note that this is only an indicative list.

Strength of Materials : Stresses, Strains, Stress-strain relations, Trusses, Beams ( SFD,BMD, Deflection of beams - Statically determinate ), Theories of failure, Thin walled cylindrical shells subjected internal pressure, Torsional problems.

Composites : Classifications, Stress-strain relations, Material constants, Micro mechanics, Macro mechanics

Linear Algebra: Vector algebra; Matrix – Matrix operations, Determinant, Rank of a matrix, Eigen values and Eigen vectors; System of linear equations.

Calculus: Functions of a single variable and plots; Limit, continuity and differentiability; Mean value theorem; Local / Global maxima and minima; Sequences and Series; Taylor and Maclaurin series; Indefinite and definite integrals; Application of definite integral to find area and volume; Partial and total derivatives.

Functions of complex variables – Roots, Analytic functions (Cauchy-Riemann equation).

Differential Equations: First order linear and nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODE); Higher order linear ODEs with constant coefficients; Cauchy-Euler equation. (It is presumed that the candidate is knowledgeable with high-school mathematics such as basic geometry, trigonometry, coordinate geometry and algebra, which are fundamental to the given syllabus for the mathematics test)

Basics of Fluid Mechanics: Basic equations of motion, Classification of Flows, Flow past bodies, Vortex motion, Lift, Drag, moments.

Basic Numerical Methods: Convergence, Stability, Finite difference Methods, Complex analysis, Differential Equations, Special functions, Programming Skills.

Basic Gas dynamics: Wave Propagation, Mach Waves, Compressible Flows, Nozzle flows, Shocks, Expansion, Fanno flows, Rayleigh flows.

Experimental Techniques: Measurement of Flow parameters - pressure, temperature, velocity, mass flow, flow visualization.

Flight Dynamics & Control. Laplace transform, response of LTI, transfer functions, feedback systems, open loop and closed loop gains, types of systems, poles and zeros, state space form, stability, controllability, observability. Free body diagram, point mass model, Airplane performance, rigid body dynamics, trim and stability, static margin, longitudinal and lateral-directional dynamics, longitudinal and lateral modes.

Propulsion Panel:

Classification of Air Breathing and Rocket Propulsion, Working of turbojet, ramjet, Solid and Liquid Propulsion, Calculation of thrust, Equilibrium Combustion thermodynamics, Elements of Heat Transfer, Gas Turbine Engine Components.

MS/PhD Admission [JUL-NOV 2024]

Important Dates

UG% means the percentage marks scored in your 4 year UG programme , as reported by you, rounded to one decimal place.

PG% means the percentage marks scored in your 2 year PG programme , as reported by you, rounded to one decimal place.

GS means the Gate Score (out of 1000) obtained in your Gate exam. Gate score should have been taken in 2022 / 2023 / 2024.

Note: If any of these marks are incorrectly reported in your application form, IIT Madras reserves the right to cancel your application on that basis.

Norms for Full-Time Ph.D. Programme

Shortlisting for interviews for Ph.D. are based on UG and PG marks

Norms for Direct Ph.D. Programme

Shortlisting for interviews for Direct Ph.D. are based on UG marks and GATE score. Candidates from centrally funded technical institutes(CFTI) need to satisfy the norm for the UG marks OR the GATE score . Candidates from other institutes need to satisfy both UG marks and GATE score norms.

In addition the following types of application are handled as follows:

• M.Sc. is considered to be a UG degree , and BSc is not considered as a qualifying degree. MSc students should have cleared NET or GATE to be called for interview. Such students may also be called for PhD test and interview on a case by case basis.
• 4 Year BS will be considered equivalent to a UG degree . BS students should have cleared NET or GATE to be called for interview. Such students may also be called for PhD test and interview on a case by case basis.
• Applicants from CFTI's with high Percentage (above 75 for general category students, and above 70 for reserved category students) are eligible to apply for MS without clearing GATE.
• Applicants who have been (and continue to be) in an IIT Madras project for six months are eligible to apply for MS even if they do not have a gate score. All such project students must have a strong recommendation from their project supervisors. Shortlisting will be done based on a case-by-case basis.
• PhD applicants with good GATE score who are not otherwise eligible may be shortlisted on a case by case basis.
• PhD applicants with high GRE scores who are not otherwise eligible may be shortlisted on a case by case basis.
• MS or PhD applicants with relevant (non-teaching) work-experience who are not otherwise eligible may be shortlisted on a case by case basis.
• MS or PhD applicants with publications in reputed journals or conferences who are not otherwise eligible may be shortlisted on a case by case basis.
• MS applications with GRE scores not accepted as of now.
• PhD applications from candidates with 1 year masters cannot be accepted. The application may be considered for the MS programme instead, provided the UG and GATE scores meet MS norms.

Shortlist For Test/Interview

The interviews will be held online/in-person. The MS/PhD interviews will be held from 01-05-2024 to 03-05-2024 . The interview schedule for each candidate will be communicated by the respective stream coordinators. For online interviews, the candidate will be asked to connect on an online platform such as Google meet. Shortlisted candidates should test the software on their laptop or mobile devices and ensure that it works satisfactorily before the interview. Further instructions on the interview and the schedule will be communicated by the individual streams. All shortlisted candidates have been asked to fill out an acknowledgment form with some application data and their ability to attend online interviews. Please fill out the form by the date specified in the call letter. All candidates who filled out the acknowledgment form will be contacted by the stream coordinators about further details and the interview schedule. If you have been shortlisted(list below), but have not received such an email, you can contact the EE dept. office. In case you have filled in multiple times to the same programme, the last received application has been considered. Please use only the application number given on the call letter for the acknowledgment and all further correspondence. Please keep track of your email regularly from now till the end of interviews as all communication will be through email. Ensure that you use the same email address as the one in the application form for all correspondence. That is the email on record with the department.

The Ph.D. is typically a 5-year full-time residential/non-residential program. Students must go to the official website and look for the admission announcement. Students will be chosen based on merit, entrance exam assessments such as GATE and NET, and interviews conducted by the different departments.

• Candidates can apply to pursue Direct Ph.D. programs in Engineering/Sciences/Management/Humanities & Social Sciences stream after their Bachelor’s Degree.

Ph.D. in Engineering

• Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology with a good academic record.

• Students with a 2 Year M.Sc. from IITs (entry through JAM) with 8.0 and above do not need to qualify for any National Level Examination.
• Students who get more than 8.0 CGPA in M.Sc. in Science Departments of IIT Madras are admitted directly to their Ph.D. program in Sciences with interviews at the departmental level.

Ph.D. in Humanities and Social Sciences

•  Master’s degree / dual degree or equivalent in relevant discipline AND Qualifying UGC – NET or JRF / CSIR-JRF / GATE Score or equivalent qualification tenable for the current year in the relevant area or international level postgraduate admission examination such as GRE (Non-HTRA)
• Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology or 5 Year BS+MS Dual degree/ 5 Year Integrated degree from Centrally Funded Technical Institute with a good academic record. 

Ph.D. in Management

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in any professional discipline of minimum four years duration or Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, with a good academic record.
• Qualifying in national level examinations such as GATE/CAT/UGC-JRF/NET/CSIR-JRF or equivalent or international level postgraduate admission examinations such as GMAT/GRE (Non-HTRA). 
• At least 5 years of managerial experience instead of the above examination. (This clause is applicable for Non-HTRA candidates only)
• Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology with a good academic record or a Master’s degree in Research in Engineering / Technology in a relevant discipline are exempted from qualifying in National level examinations.
• Candidates with an MBA or 2-year PG diploma from Centrally Funded Technical Institute (CFTI) with a CGPA of 8 and above are exempted from qualifying in National level examinations.
• The application form for Ph.D. at IIT Madras is available on the official website. Students who are willing to apply for the Ph.D. will have to check the official website and fill up the application form.
• Applicants who qualify for the minimum eligibility in the various courses of Ph.D. would be called for an interview by the Selection Committees of the respective departments.
• For students who have obtained a PG degree 10 years earlier as on the last date prescribed for receipt of the completed application, a departmental test will be conducted.

International Students 

Students from outside India can also apply for the Ph.D. program. There are many categories such as - 

• Master's degree in Engineering/Technology or a Master's degree by Research in Engineering/Technology or a Master's degree in Sciences / Humanities and Social Sciences / Management Studies with a good academic record.
• Valid GRE/GMAT score, and they must clear either IELTS or TOEFL with a minimum score of 6.5 (overall) and 80(overall) respectively. 
• Candidates must submit their application through the Indian High Commission/Embassy.
• Scholarship: There is a range of scholarships through which interested students (international) can apply for the Ph.D. program. They are as follows - 
• Through Embassies /Foreign Government Scholarships
• ASEAN Scholarship : The funding covers the entire cost of study and living expenses for up to 5 years of their Ph.D. program. 
• Under MoU and FIP (Faculty Improvement Programme). 

Steps to Apply for Ph.D. at IIT Madras

The Ph.D. application form is available on the official website of IIT Madras. Students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. can visit the official website and complete the application form. To complete the application form, students must first check in to the official website. It should be noted that the application form will not be sent unless the application fee is paid. Students must bring a printout of the application form to their interviews. The following are the procedures you should take to complete the Ph.D. admission form:

• Sign-up / Register at https://research.iitm.ac.in/user.
• use the “Apply to Department” menu to fill in the application ( Maximum 3 applications allowed per user).
• Upon registering, an email will be sent to the email ID which will contain a link to activate the account.
• Update profile information under the “My Profile” menu.
• An application number is generated after finishing the payment process.
• A mail containing an application will be sent to the mail ID.

Note - The OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) certificate and Income & Assets certificate [for EWS category] issued after 01.04.2020 (for the financial year 2020- 2021) in the prescribed format must be uploaded in the ONLINE application and submitted at the time of interview/admission

IIT Madras Ph.D. Required Documents 

Documents required during the time of the interview are as follows - 

• A printed copy of the application was mailed to the candidates after online registration.
• Copies of all Mark sheets/grade cards/provisional/degree certificates beginning from a first degree towards proof of qualification.
• Copy of Community Certificate in the case of SC/ST/OBC-NCL candidates issued by the respective State Government. The candidates claiming for EWS (Economically Weaker sections) reservation should submit a valid certificate issued by the concerned authority.
• Authorized Doctor’s Certificate of disability descriptions in the case of Person with Disabled (PwD) candidates.
• Copy of GATE score or NET (UGC-JRF/NEt/CSIR-JRF/ DAE-JEST) or other fellowship awards.
• Project Coordinator's certificate in the prescribed format and a copy of the project appointment letter from Dean IC & SR of IITM in the case of Project Associate if already appointed.

IIT Madras Ph.D. Financial Assistance 

Students who are admitted to Ph.D. programs at IIT Madras under Regular Scheme are eligible for a Half-Time Research Assistantship (HTRA). The conditions which students need to fulfill to get selected for the assistantship are:

• They should work for 8 hours per week in the Departments to earn this assistantship.
• The assistantship is renewed every semester. Students should show good performance in the research and the preceding semester to continue with the assistantship.

IIT Bombay and IIT Madras were established in 1958 and 1959 respectively. Both these institutions have emerged as highly renowned centers of Engineering studies in India. Both IIT Bombay and IIT Madras are more than an institution, they are in fact a brand with a high relevance and strong network in the industry.

What does IIT Madras quantum computing course cover?

IIT Madras offers a quantum science and technology course. This dual degree program was started in 2020 seeing the widespread requirement for skilled professionals who know quantum computing. 

The course aims to provide students with a strong foundation in the QuST domain. Students will learn about the physical and technical aspects of building quantum devices and how quantum algorithms and protocols are implemented. During the conference’s inaugural session, Ajai Chowdhury, Chairman of the Mission Governing Board for the National Quantum Mission, discussed India’s increasing involvement in quantum technology. Dr Chowdhury highlighted the significant progress in quantum research at IIT Madras and noted the active participation of around 600 Indian scientists and 40 to 50 startups in the quantum field.

IIT Madras Admission: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is currently accepting applications for admission to the BS degree program in Data Science for the September 2024 batch. The last date to apply for this program is September 15, 2024. The candidates who meet the eligibility criteria can register themselves. The form has been made available at study.iitm.ac.in.

Who can apply for admission?

1. Candidates may apply regardless of age or educational background as long as they have completed Class 12 or its equivalent. Those who are eligible can start the program right away. View the approved class 12 equivalents list.

2. Students from any group, stream, or board who took part in the Class 11 final exams are eligible to apply. After passing Class 12, those who meet the requirements can enroll in the program.

The applicants are anticipated to have completed English and math in Class 10.

The following is the application process fee schedule: OBC and General Category applicants must pay ₹3,000. Applicants in the SC and ST categories and those with a disability of at least 40% (PwD) pay a discounted fee of ₹1500. The application fee is additionally waived for SC and ST Category applicants who are PwD (having at least 40% disability) and is only ₹750.
