Environmental pollution is the unwarranted discharge of mass or energy into the planet’s natural resource pools, such as land, air, or water, which detriments the environment’s ecological stability and the health of the living things that inhabit it. There is an intensified health risk and pollution in middle and low-income countries due to the increased use of pesticides, industrialization, the introduction of nitrogen-based fertilizers, forest fires, urbanization, and inadequate waste management (Appannagari, 2017). Air pollution, lead and chemicals exposure, hazardous waste exposure, and inappropriate e-waste disposal all result in unfavorable living conditions, fatal illnesses, and ecosystem destruction. The essay will provide an overview of pollution and proffer solutions to combating pollution for a sustainable environment and health.

In addition to hindering economic development and considerably accelerating climate change, pollution exacerbates poverty and inequality in urban and rural areas. The most pain is always experienced by the poor, who cannot afford to protect themselves against pollution’s harmful effects. The main environmental factor contributing to sickness and early mortality is pollution due to premature deaths resulting from pollution (Appannagari, 2017). Due to the unacceptably high cost to human capital and health, as well as the resulting GDP losses, pollution must be addressed. Through initiatives like reducing black carbon and methane emissions, which are responsible for air pollution and climate change, pollution management can also significantly contribute to climate change mitigation (Appannagari, 2017). Additionally, pollution control can promote competitiveness through, for instance, job growth, increased energy efficiency, better transportation, and sustainable urban and rural development. Below are the various approaches for solutions to health and pollution problems.

First, governments should evaluate pollution as a national and international priority and integrate it into the city and country planning process. Pollution affects the health and well-being of societies and, as such, cannot be solely viewed as an environmental issue (The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health, 2017). All levels of government should give pollution prevention a high priority, incorporate it into development planning, and tie it to commitments regarding climate change, SDGs, and the prevention of non-communicable diseases. Some options are both affordable and offer good returns on investment.

Secondly, governments should increase funding for pollution control and prioritize it by health impacts. There should be a significant increase in the financing for pollution management in low- and middle-income nations, both from national budgets and international development organizations (The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health, 2017). The most effective international support for pollution reduction is when it mobilizes additional actions and funding from others. Examples include helping towns and nations that are quickly industrializing concerning technical capacity building, regulatory and enforcement support, and support for direct actions to save lives. Monitoring financing initiatives are necessary to determine their cost-effectiveness and to raise accountability.

Thirdly, organizations should work to build multicultural partnerships for pollution control. Public-private partnerships and interagency cooperation can be powerful tools in creating clean technology and energy sources that will ultimately prevent pollution at its source (The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health, 2017). Collaborations between ministries that include the ministries of finance, energy, development, agriculture, and transport, as well as the ministries of health and the environment, are crucial in pollution control. Governments should promote monitoring systems that could identify and apportion pollution sources, measure pollution levels, guide enforcement, and assess progress toward goals. The use of new technology in pollution monitoring, such as data mining and satellite images, can boost effectiveness, broaden the monitoring area, and cut costs.

One of the main issues facing the world in the current period is pollution. Natural resources are depleting daily due to car emissions, new technologies, factories, and chemicals added to food. All of these factors seriously harm the world. However, the problems caused by pollution can be prevented by building multicultural partnerships, increasing funding for pollution control, integrating it into the country’s planning process, and adopting new technology for monitoring pollution. Preventing pollution lowers the cost to the environment and the economy.

Causes, Effects and Solutions to Environmental Pollution

Pollution is the contamination of the environment by introduction of contaminants that can cause damage to environment and harm or discomfort to humans or other living species. It is the addition of another form of any substance or form of energy to the environment at a rate faster than the environment can accommodate it by dispersion, breakdown, recycling, or storage in some harmless form.

Environmental pollution is one the greatest challenges that the world is facing today. It began since industrial revolution, increasing day by day and causing irreparable damage to Mother Earth. Environmental pollution has its own causes, effects and solutions. Looking into these will help you identify the causes and what steps you can take to mitigate those effects. Broadly, environmental pollution consists of six basic types of pollution, i.e. air, water, land, soil, noise, and light.

When people think of environmental pollution, most focus on fossil fuel and carbon emissions, but there are different contributing factors. Chemical pollution in bodies of water contributes to illnesses. Electromagnetic pollution has effects on human health but is uncommonly considered in present times despite the fact we essentially expose ourselves to it on a daily basis. Taking a look at causes and effects of environmental pollution will pull any mind on a rapid downward spiral. Solutions are in the works and, if we work together across the world, there is hope remaining, at least for the time being.

Causes of Environmental Pollution

Pollution from cars, trucks, and other vehicles is and has been our major environmental pollution issue for almost a century now. The problem is we did not realize this until the problem had manifested to monumental proportions.
Fossil fuel emissions from power plants which burn coal as fuel contributed heavily, along with vehicles burning fossil fuels, to the production of smog. Smog is the result of fossil fuel combustion combined with sunlight and heat. The result is a toxic gas which now surrounds our once pristine planet. This is known as “ozone smog” and means we have more problems down here than we do in the sky.
Carbon dioxide is another product from all of the vehicles on the planet as well as unreformed power plants and other industrial facilities. A continually growing population of humans and clear cutting of forests has exacerbated this problem so natural defenses are no longer present and carbon dioxide levels are on the rise.
Water pollution is a major issue . Many industries dump wastes into rivers, lakes, ponds, and streams in an attempt to hide wastes from EPA inspectors. These water sources feed major crops and food becomes contaminated with a variety of chemicals and bacteria, causing rampant health problems.
Radiation comes into play as well. This is an exceedingly nasty pollution issue and requires extensive description. Primarily, there is radiation from the sun. As the natural ozone layer around the Earth has become depleted . The sun is wonderful, but the only reason we are able to survive on this planet so close to the sun is due to the fact of natural shielding against solar radiation. As the protective ozone layer around the planet has become thinner, ultraviolet radiation has risen significantly, causing increases in skin cancers and other types of cancer in all countries, killing millions of people every year.
More radiation is a problem. The sun shining brightly on a naked planet is not the only source of radiation we are exposed to. Electromagnetic radiation is another insidious culprit. Once upon a time, the major concern around this type of radiation was due to high tension wires which carry huge amounts of electricity to cities. Now, we even carry sources of this radiation with us as cell phones, laptops, tablets and other wireless devices.

Effects of Environmental Pollution

The polluting gases mentioned above have an interesting effect on climate . Essentially, these gases form a veil around the planet which holds heat in, increasing the overall temperature of the planet. The rise in planetary temperature, or global warming, is not immediately noticeable. However, even a rise of a few degrees Centigrade causes catastrophic changes in weather. This is happening now.
Pollen has increased . It is ironic, but even with fewer trees in the world; the increase of carbon dioxide emissions induces plants such as ragweed and many trees to produce more pollen than ever before. This has resulted in rampant allergies across the world, affecting the health of billions of people.
One of the solutions to tamp out carbon monoxide emissions from coal burning power plants was and still is to use radioactive power plants. While this does cut down on gas emissions significantly, there is radioactive waste which causes various cancers to bloom in major cities and small towns all around while destroying ecosystems entirely.
Global temperature has risen significantly over the years. The protective atmosphere is further being polluted by methane gas released from melting icecaps. This is causing rampant weather issues around the planet.

This all seems like a fairly bleak outlook for the planet and all the creatures on it. It is, in fact, a load of dark and very real truth. For much of it, there is little turning back. Being realistic, though solutions are in the works to combat global warming, the hope is dim. Radiation does not go away quickly either, especially in a technological age requiring more power, more gas, and intensified depletion of protective gases around the planet. We are on a significant downhill snowball ride to hell. There are things we can do. Let us take a look at some of the solutions which are currently being implemented to reduce pollution.

Solutions to Environmental Pollution

Gas emission pollution is being mitigated in a variety of ways with car emission control, electric and hybrid vehicles and public transportation systems . Not all major cities have successful implementation and decent public transportation in place, but the world is working on this issue constantly and we have managed to reduce emissions profoundly over the last decade. There is much catching up to do.
The cost of radioactive power plants is becoming apparent and the days of coal power plants are nearly dead. The radiation is a serious issue. Radioactive leakage from power plants and nuclear testing have already contaminated oceanic life to such a degree that it will take hundreds of years to return to normal. More radiation solutions are in the works with various ecologically friendly power technologies being built every day.
Solar power is a fantastic solution . Now that solar radiation is at a climactic peak, we can reap power from the sun using solar panel systems. These range from home systems to larger scale systems powering entire communities and cities.
Wind power is coming into play . This may not seem like much at first, but when you get about 100 feet off the ground, there is a great deal of wind up there. By building wind turbines to harvest natural wind energy, electricity is produced. Wind turbine power and solar power are both powerful forces against fossil fuel power and radioactive power. The one problem here is power companies. They want to stay with radioactive power plants because they actually can’t be removed. It has become the crusades of many individuals and small corporations to make the switch and there are plenty of people following this as populations cry out for help.
Electromagnetic radiation (ER) reduction . Once major manufacturers of computers and electronic devices realized the blatant potential for huge ER emissions directly into the eyes and brains of users, they started to implement hardware protocols to minimize risks and reduce ER production significantly. Newer devices are in the lead to knock this problem out and, fortunately, this is working.

Also, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is well aware of all leaks and tricks industries are using to dump wastes. This agency now has extremely strict protocols and testing procedures implemented against such facilities so populations are not affected. Additionally, the EPA is measuring air pollution and implementing regulatory procedures for vehicle emissions. They also monitor pollen issues and, with the help of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), they implement solutions to reduce pollen in the air.

Dropping pollen counts is a major focus for EPA and CDC activities. Asthma and other allergic conditions are flooding medical care facilities and pharmaceutical companies with serious public health problems. The response has been swift and various methods to control emissions and reduce pollen counts are in the works. Children and elderly people are at the highest risk for environmental pollution related health problems. The good news is we are directly on the horizon to cut down the causes and risks while providing practical health solutions for the general public throughout the world.

Environment Pollution is one of the greatest problems today which is increasing with every passing year and causing crucial and severe damage to the earth. It has become a real problem since the beginning of the industrial revolution. It is the contamination of physical and biological components of the Earth / atmosphere system to such an extent that normal environmental processes are harmed. Pollution of the environment consists of five main types of pollution, namely air, water, soil, noise and light. Development activities such as construction, transport and manufacturing not only deplete natural resources, but also produce large quantities of waste which leads to air pollution, water, soil and the oceans; global warming and acid rain. This paper provides the insight view about the affects of environment pollution in the perspective of air pollution, water and land/ soil waste pollution on human and also provide the ways to save the environment with all these pollution.

Earth is the only known planet which supports life. The environment of earth has made the existence, growth and development of all living beings possible. The word "environment" means surroundings. The environment is polluted in various ways. Pollution is the effect of undesirable changes in our surroundings that have harmful effects on plants, animals and human beings. An average human requires about 12 kg of air each day, which is nearly 12 to15 times greater than the amount of food we eat. Thus even a small concentration of pollutants in the air becomes more significant in comparison to the similar levels present in food. Pollutants that enter water have the ability to spread to distant places especially in the marine ecosystem.

Eutrophication

Eutrophication is a process that occurs when an excess of plant nutrients, such as phosphorus and nitrogen, accumulate in waterways. This can lead to algal blooms - dense growths of algae that block sunlight from entering the water and deplete oxygen levels, resulting in fish kills.

While some algal blooms can be beneficial for ecosystems, they can also be toxic and harmful to the environment.

Additionally, events like the Fukushima disaster have led to long-term health consequences, with studies showing a 70 per cent rise in thyroid cancer among infants exposed to radiation.

Decimation of aquatic life

Animals and plants that rely on water for survival are the most impacted by water pollution.

Statistics from the Centre for Biological Diversity on the effects of the Deepwater Horizon spill offer a stark illustration of this impact. The 2010 spill in the Gulf of Mexico harmed over 82,000 birds, 25,900 marine animals, 6,165 sea turtles and an uncounted number of fish and invertebrates.

Food chain disruption

Pollution disrupts the food chain by transferring toxins from one level to higher levels. In some cases, it can wipe out an entire part of the food chain, causing further imbalances.

For instance, if a predator dies, it may lead to excessive growth in prey populations, while the loss of prey can result in the decline of predators.

Economic effects

Managing and restoring polluted water bodies is an expensive endeavour. For instance, Japan declared in 2019 that it is running out of space to store the contaminated water from the Fukushima disaster, with over a million tonnes stored in tanks.

Research indicates that cleaning up the effects of the disaster will cost at least USD 660 billion.

Acid Rain is very damaging to the flora and fauna of the environment.

3) Industrial Exhaust

Industrial Exhaust is one of the main causes of pollution of the environment. Industries emit harmful gases as byproducts into the environment. Some of them even release liquid chemical pollutants and other hazardous solid compounds, into the nearby water bodies. This causes huge damage to the natural water resource and contaminates it, also threatening the life of flora and fauna and aquatic plants and animals.

4) Construction Activities

Incessant construction activities are one of the main causes of air pollution in an urban area. Activities like grinding, foundation digging, sump construction, transportation results in very small particles of dust being mixed with air. These particle are called Particulate Matter (PM) and just remain suspended in the air, for hours, sometimes even for days. Air with more than prescribed quantity of Particulate Matter is hazardous to breathe and may cause serious respiratory ailments.

There are also some natural causes of pollution, which cause huge damage to the environment. Though, they are not consistent in appearance, yet, they cause considerable damage to the environment.

Some of the natural causes of the environmental pollution are volcanoes, forest fires, dust storms. During the volcanic eruption and forest fires large quantities of toxic gases are released causing damage to the environment.

There is a need to immediately limit the effects of pollution as it is destroying the environment with every passing minute. Not only the pollution is contaminating our natural resources it also threatens the very existence of life on earth.

Air pollution may cause Alzheimer’s disease — This new drug could protect your brain

LOS ANGELES — Air pollution is a growing concern for brain health, with mounting evidence linking it to cognitive decline and an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. However, researchers say a new type of drug could help shield our brains from some of pollution’s harmful effects.

Researchers at the University of Southern California (USC) have found that a medication called GSM-15606 can reduce the buildup of a toxic protein in the brains of mice exposed to air pollution. This protein, known as amyloid beta 42, has a strong connection to Alzheimer’s disease in humans.

The study, published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia , focused on two common types of air pollution: nanoparticulate matter (nPM) from urban air and diesel exhaust particles (DEP). Both of these pollutants are small enough to be inhaled deeply into the lungs and potentially enter the bloodstream.

When mice breathed in these pollutants over eight weeks, their brains showed increased levels of amyloid beta 42. However, mice given GSM-15606 during the exposure period had significantly lower levels of this problematic protein.

GSM-15606 belongs to a class of drugs called gamma-secretase modulators . These medications work by tweaking an enzyme involved in producing amyloid beta, shifting its activity to create less of the harmful 42-amino acid form and more of a shorter, less troublesome version.

While GSM-15606 itself is no longer being developed for human use, similar drugs are in the pipeline . If proven safe and effective in humans, they could potentially be used to protect people living in highly polluted areas or those at higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

The study also revealed an intriguing and somewhat concerning finding: mice exposed to diesel exhaust particles showed a 25% increase in the size of fluid-filled spaces in their brains called ventricles. This enlargement could indicate some degree of brain shrinkage , though more research is necessary to understand its significance.

The findings add to a growing body of evidence linking air pollution to brain health issues . Previous studies have found that people living in areas with high levels of air pollution tend to show faster cognitive decline as they age and have a higher risk of developing dementia.

While the best solution would be to reduce air pollution levels globally, that’s a long-term challenge. In the meantime, approaches like the one explored in this study could help protect vulnerable populations from pollution’s harmful effects on the brain.

“Because gamma secretase is needed for normal functions body-wide, this drug was designed to modulate, but not inhibit, production of Aβ42,” says study senior author Caleb Finch, the holder of the ARCO/William F. Kieschnick Chair in the Neurobiology of Aging at the USC Leonard Davis School, in a university release. “This is the first example of a new drug developed to slow Alzheimer’s that may also protect aging individuals from the environmental risk factor of air pollution.”

Paper Summary

Methodology.

The researchers exposed groups of mice to either filtered air, nanoparticulate matter, or diesel exhaust particles for 5 hours a day, 3 days a week, over 8 weeks. Some mice were also given food containing GSM-15606 throughout this period. After the exposure, the researchers examined the mice’s brains, measuring levels of various forms of amyloid beta and assessing the activity of enzymes involved in its production. They also used MRI scans to look at brain structure in some of the mice.

Key Results

Mice exposed to air pollution showed increased levels of amyloid beta 42 in their brains, but this increase was prevented in mice also given GSM-15606. The drug didn’t affect the activity of enzymes that produce amyloid beta, suggesting it works by changing how these enzymes function rather than how many are present. Mice exposed to diesel exhaust particles also showed enlarged ventricles in their brains.

Study Limitations

This study was conducted in mice, so the results may not directly translate to humans. The exposure levels and duration used in the study may not perfectly mimic real-world human exposure to air pollution. Additionally, while the drug reduced amyloid beta 42 levels, the study didn’t assess whether this led to improvements in cognitive function or behavior in the mice.

Discussion & Takeaways

The study suggests that gamma-secretase modulators like GSM-15606 could potentially help protect the brain from some of the harmful effects of air pollution. This is particularly relevant given the widespread exposure to air pollution worldwide and its increasingly recognized impact on brain health. The findings also provide further evidence for the link between air pollution and processes involved in Alzheimer’s disease, such as amyloid beta accumulation. The observation of enlarged ventricles in mice exposed to diesel exhaust particles is concerning and warrants further investigation.

Funding & Disclosures

The study was funded by grants from the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund and the National Institutes of Health. Two of the study authors, K.D. Rynearson and R.E. Tanzi, hold patents related to the GSM-15606 drug used in the study. These patents are assigned to the University of California-San Diego and Massachusetts General Hospital. The other authors declared no conflicts of interest.

The environment and rivers will benefit from the Environment Agency’s response to the company’s breach of Environmental Permitting Regulations

East Mercia Rivers Trust has received a financial boost of £150,000 after the Environment Agency accepted an Enforcement Undertaking (EU) offer from Reckitt Benckiser (UK) Ltd.

The payment is part of an EU offered by the company for a leak of aerosol production trade effluent from its site on Sinfin Lane, Derby. The pollution occurred on 12 August 2021 into the Cuttle Brook as it flowed through Sinfin golf course.

Cause of pollution

Reckitt Benckiser is the producer of household cleaning products, healthcare products and infant/child nutrition products. The EU occurred because of a discharge that led to the death of 371 dead bullheads and 10 sticklebacks. It also caused a prolific growth of sewage fungus and perfumed odour to the brook.

The effluent was found to be seeping out of the bank of the brook within the site. It also resulted in low oxygen levels and was 130 times more polluting than untreated sewage. The company took prompt action to stop the polluting discharge and investigate the cause. It had stopped by the following day.

In addition to the donation, Reckitt Benckiser has spent £300,000 to prevent any recurrence of the pollution incident and paid the Environment Agency’s costs of over £10,000.

Paul Chambers, Environment Officer for the Environment Agency said:

“Enforcement Undertakings allow polluters to positively address and restore the harm caused to the environment and prevent repeat incidents.

“The Environment Agency will consider acceptance of Enforcement Undertakings submitted for suitable cases to restore the environment, improve practices of the offending company and avoid longer criminal court cases. However, we will prosecute in appropriate cases.

“As well as donations totalling £150,000 to East Mercia Rivers Trust that will bring great benefits to the environment, Reckitt Benckiser has made significant improvements to the Sinfin Lane site drainage system, and particularly its trade effluent pipework.

“Please report any environmental issues to the Environment Agency’s 24-hour Incident Hotline on 0800 80 70 60.”

Rachel Butler, Executive Director at East Mercia Rivers Trust said:

“The donation from Reckitt Benckiser has directly contributed towards a major river restoration project as part of East Mercia River Trust’s ambition to restore the Upper Witham landscape at scale.

“An important limestone river, this watercourse forms the headwaters of the Witham catchment and is home to white-clawed crayfish and brown trout amongst other native flora and fauna.

“Nationally, of the estimated original 2 million hectares of functional, wetland, lowland floodplain only 3000 hectares remained by 2015.”

Regulation 38(1) Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 (as amended).

What is an Enforcement Undertaking? 

An Enforcement Undertaking is available to the Environment Agency (EA) as an alternative sanction to prosecution or monetary penalty for dealing with certain environmental offences. It is a legally binding voluntary agreement proposed by a business (or an individual) when the EA has reasonable grounds to suspect that an environmental offence has occurred.

Enforcement Undertakings for environmental offences were introduced under the Environmental Civil Sanctions (England) Order 2010 and the Environmental Civil Sanctions (Miscellaneous Amendments) (England) Regulations 2010. 

Accepting an Enforcement Undertaking is always at the discretion of the EA but if accepted enables firms and individuals who have damaged the environment or operated outside of legislative requirements to offer to complete actions which will address the cause and effect of their offending, including making a payment to an appropriate environmental project. 

EUs can be offered for offences including polluting rivers, breaching permit conditions designed to protect communities, or failing to register and comply with recycling/recovery obligations. The Environment Agency then carefully considers whether the actions offered by the offender are acceptable. 

Why use Enforcement Undertakings? 

Businesses will voluntarily secure compliance now and in the future, without attracting a criminal record.
The environment, local community and those directly impacted by the offending can benefit through actions being offered in an EU.
They allow the EA to deal with the less intentional and polluting offending in a more proportionate way than prosecution through the criminal courts.

The Environment Agency reserves the right to prosecute, where offenders fail to comply with the terms of an Enforcement Undertaking offer.
