Essay on Healthy Lifestyle

The top secret of being physically fit is adopting a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, taking good care of self, healthy sleep habits, and having a physically active daily routine. Lifestyle is the most prevailing factor that affects one’s fitness level. A person leading a sedentary lifestyle has a low fitness level whereas living a healthier life not only makes a person fit but also extends life. Good health has a direct impact on our personality. A person with a good and healthy lifestyle is generally more confident, self-assured, sociable, and energetic.

A good and healthy lifestyle allows one to relish and savor all the pleasures in life without any complications. Even all the wealth is less valuable when compared to sound health. Having all the luxuries in the world does not fulfill its purpose when one is continuously ill, depressed, or suffering from a significant health complication. A healthy person has a clear and calm perception of everything without prejudice. His actions and decisions are more practical and logical and are hence more successful in life.

A good habit is a key factor for a healthy lifestyle. To maintain a stable body and mind, one needs to inculcate good habits. Waking up early in the morning, regularly exercising or a good morning walk helps to keep our body energetic and refresh our mind. Maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet throughout the day is vital for maintaining a good lifestyle. Too much indulgence in alcohol or smoking excessively is not at all appropriate for a healthy lifestyle.

Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is important for maintaining a good lifestyle. When we are self-disciplined then we are more organized and regular in maintaining good health. A disciplined life is a regulated life. A man without discipline is a ship without a rudder. Discipline needs self-control. One who cannot control himself can seldom control others. The level of discipline and perseverance largely determines a person’s success. Self-discipline is the act of disciplining one’s own feelings, desires, etc. especially with the intention of improving oneself. It strengthens our willpower. The stronger our will power the positive will be our decision. It enables us to conquer our own self.

Punctuality

Punctuality is the habit of doing things on time. It is the characteristic of every successful person and everyone must observe punctuality in order to win success in life. Punctuality is necessary for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It should become a habit with us. A punctual person is able to fulfill all his responsibilities and hence is treated with respect in society. It is needed in every walk of life.

Diet is an important component for overall fitness and works best in combination with exercise. A balanced diet and exercise regularly help to maintain good health. It is necessary to reduce weight if one is overweight or obese, failing which one cannot be physically fit for long. For people with obesity, more exercise and a strict regime are necessary, preferably under guidance. There are many ways of making the diet healthier.

Use less sugar and salt while cooking food.

Use less oil while cooking. Avoid deep-frying as much as possible.

Eat more fruits daily. They provide more vitamins and minerals to our bodies.

Add sprouts of gram and moong dal to at least one meal in a day. Add fiber to your diet. Use whole grains instead of polished cereals. Eat lots of salad and yogurt.

Eat fermented food regularly. Fermented food contains many useful bacteria that help in the process of digestion.

Prevention of Lifestyle Diseases

By adopting a healthy lifestyle one can avoid lifestyle diseases. The following are some ways in which we can prevent lifestyle diseases.

Eat a balanced diet that contains important nutrients. One must include more fresh fruits and green vegetables in the diet. Refrain from eating junk food. Stay away from foods that contain large amounts of salt or sugar.

Exercise regularly. Spend more time outdoors and do activities such as walking, running, swimming, and cycling.

One must avoid overindulgence in alcohol, junk food, smoking, and addiction to drugs and medicines.

Avoid spending too much on modern gadgets like mobile phones, laptops, televisions, etc. Spend time on these gadgets for short intervals of time only.

Set a healthy sleeping routine for every day. Waking early in the morning and going to bed early at night should be a daily habit. Lead an active life.

Unhealthy Lifestyle

Bad food habits and an unhealthy lifestyle such as less or no physical activity may lead to several diseases like obesity, high blood pressure or hypertension, diabetes, anemia, and various heart diseases. An unhealthy lifestyle reduces productivity and creativity in a person. It also adversely affects moods and relationships. It leads to depression and anxiety in human beings.

Creating Healthy Habits

Make Better Choices Easier

Illustration of a parent and child preparing a healthy meal together

We know that making healthy choices can help us feel better and live longer. Maybe you’ve already tried to eat better, get more exercise or sleep, quit smoking, or reduce stress. It’s not easy. But research shows how you can boost your ability to create and sustain a healthy lifestyle.

“It’s frustrating to experience setbacks when you’re trying to make healthy changes and reach a goal,” says NIH behavior change expert Dr. Susan Czajkowski. “The good news is that decades of research show that change is possible, and there are proven strategies you can use to set yourself up for success.”

Lots of things you do impact your health and quality of life, now and in the future. You can reduce your risk for the most common, costly, and preventable health problems—such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and obesity—by making healthy choices.

Know Your Habits

Regular things you do—from brushing your teeth to having a few drinks every night—can become habits. Repetitive behaviors that make you feel good can affect your brain in ways that create habits that may be hard to change. Habits often become automatic—they happen without much thought.

“The first step to changing your behavior is to create an awareness around what you do regularly,” explains Dr. Lisa Marsch, an expert in behavior change at Dartmouth College. “Look for patterns in your behavior and what triggers the unhealthy habits you want to change.”

Maybe you eat too much while watching TV or join a friend on smoke breaks even when you don’t want a cigarette. “You can develop ways to disrupt those patterns and create new ones,” Marsch says. For instance, eat meals with the TV off or join friends for healthy activities, like walk breaks.

Make a Plan

Make a plan that includes small, reasonable goals and specific actions you’ll take to move toward them.

“If you walk by the vending machine at work and buy junk food every afternoon, try walking a different way to eliminate that decision and bring healthy snacks from home,” Czajkowski says. “Whenever possible, make the healthy choice the easy choice.”

Consider what you think you’ll need to be successful. How can you change things around you to support your goals? You might need to stock up on healthy foods, remove temptations, or find a special spot to relax.

Get friends and loved ones involved. Research shows that people’s health behaviors tend to mirror those of their family and friends. Invite them to join you, support you, and help you stay on track.

It’s also important to plan for obstacles. Think about what might derail your best efforts to live healthier. How can you still make healthy choices during unexpected situations, in stressful times, or when tempted by old habits?

Stay on Track

Doing positive things for yourself can feel exciting and rewarding. But there will also be times when you wonder if you can stick with it.

“Identify negative thoughts and turn them into realistic, productive ones,” Marsch advises.

Keeping a record can help. You can use a paper journal, computer program, or mobile app to note things like your diet, exercise, stress levels, or sleep patterns. A study of people who lost at least 30 pounds and kept the weight off for at least a year found that they often tracked their progress closely.

“Even when you think you’re about to ‘fall off the wagon,’ hold on,” Czajkowski says. “Continue to track your behavior. Sometimes when you feel like you’re failing, you can learn the most.”

Marsch and others are working on digital technologies, like mobile apps, that could support you in a moment of weakness. Her team is also using technology to learn more about how to measure and increase the ability to monitor and control our behavior.

“The more you practice self-control, the better you become at it,” says Dr. Leonard Epstein, who studies behavior change and decision-making at the University at Buffalo. “You develop the capacity to act and react another way.”

Think About the Future

Epstein has found that some people have a harder time than others resisting their impulses. He calls this “delay discounting,” where you discount, or undervalue, the larger benefits of waiting in favor of smaller immediate rewards. This can lead to things like overeating, substance abuse, drinking or shopping too much, or risky sexual behavior.

“You can learn to postpone immediate gratification through episodic future thinking, or vividly imagining future positive experiences or rewards,” he explains. “It’s a great way to strengthen your ability to make decisions that are better for you in the long run.”

Epstein is now studying how to use this technique to help people who are at risk for type 2 diabetes prevent the disease.

Focusing on how a change might heal your body and enhance your life can help. When you stop smoking, your risk of a heart attack drops within 24 hours. Reducing stress can lead to better relationships. Even small improvements in your nutrition and physical activity can reduce your health risks and lengthen your life.

Sometimes when you’re trying to adopt healthier habits, other health issues can get in the way.

“When you’re really struggling with these behaviors, ask yourself if more is going on,” Czajkowski says. “For example, mental health conditions like depression and anxiety can be tied to unhealthy behaviors.”

A health professional can work with you to address any underlying issues to make change feel easier and to help you be more successful.

You’re never too out of shape, too overweight, or too old to make healthy changes. Try different strategies until you find what works best for you.

“Things may not go as planned, and that’s okay,” Czajkowski says. “Change is a process. What’s most important is to keep moving forward.”

How to Build Healthy Habits

It’s not about willpower. Good habits happen when we set ourselves up for success. Our new challenge will show you how.

what are healthy habits essay

By Tara Parker-Pope

We’re all creatures of habit. We tend to wake up at the same time each day, brush our teeth, have morning coffee and commute to work, following the same patterns every day.

So why is it so hard to form new healthy habits?

Behavioral scientists who study habit formation say that many of us try to create healthy habits the wrong way. We make bold resolutions to start exercising or lose weight, for example, without taking the steps needed to set ourselves up for success.

Here are some tips, backed by research, for forming new healthy habits.

Stack your habits. The best way to form a new habit is to tie it to an existing habit, experts say. Look for patterns in your day and think about how you can use existing habits to create new, positive ones.

For many of us, our morning routine is our strongest routine, so that’s a great place to stack on a new habit. A morning cup of coffee, for example, can create a great opportunity to start a new one-minute meditation practice. Or, while you are brushing your teeth, you might choose to do squats or stand on one foot to practice balance.

Many of us fall into end-of-the-day patterns as well. Do you tend to flop on the couch after work and turn on the TV? That might be a good time to do a single daily yoga pose.

Start small. B.J. Fogg, a Stanford University researcher and author of the book “Tiny Habits,” notes that big behavior changes require a high level of motivation that often can’t be sustained. He suggests starting with tiny habits to make the new habit as easy as possible in the beginning. Taking a daily short walk, for example, could be the beginning of an exercise habit. Or, putting an apple in your bag every day could lead to better eating habits.

In his own life, Dr. Fogg wanted to start a daily push-up habit. He started with just two push-ups a day and, to make the habit stick, tied his push-ups to a daily habit: going to the bathroom. He began by, after a bathroom trip, dropping and doing two push-ups. Now he has a habit of 40 to 80 push-ups a day.

Do it every day. British researchers studied how people form habits in the real world, asking participants to choose a simple habit they wanted to form, like drinking water at lunch or taking a walk before dinner. The study, published in the European Journal of Social Psychology , showed that the amount of time it took for the task to become automatic — a habit — ranged from 18 to 254 days. The median time was 66 days!

The lesson is that habits take a long time to create, but they form faster when we do them more often, so start with something reasonable that is really easy to do. You are more likely to stick with an exercise habit if you do some small exercise — jumping jacks, a yoga pose, a brisk walk — every day, rather than trying to get to the gym three days a week. Once the daily exercise becomes a habit, you can explore new, more intense forms of exercise.

Make it easy. Habit researchers know we are more likely to form new habits when we clear away the obstacles that stand in our way. Packing your gym bag and leaving it by the door is one example of this. Wendy Wood, a research psychologist at the University of Southern California, says she began sleeping in her running clothes to make it easier to roll out of bed in the morning, slip on her running shoes and run. Choosing an exercise that doesn’t require you to leave the house — like situps or jumping jacks — is another way to form an easy exercise habit.

Dr. Wood, author of the book, “Good Habits, Bad Habits: The Science of Making Positive Changes That Stick,” calls the forces that get in the way of good habits “friction.” In one study, researchers changed the timing of elevator doors so that workers had to wait nearly half a minute for the doors to close. (Normally the doors closed after 10 seconds.) It was just enough of a delay that it convinced many people that taking the stairs was easier than waiting for the elevator. “It shows how sensitive we are to small friction in our environment,” said Dr. Wood. “Just slowing down the elevator got people to take the stairs, and they stuck with it even after the elevator went back to normal timing.”

Dr. Wood notes that marketers are already experts in reducing friction, inducing us to spend more, for example, or order more food. That’s why Amazon has a “one-click” button and fast-food companies make it easy to supersize. “We’re just very influenced by how things are organized around us in ways that marketers understand and are exploiting, but people don’t exploit and understand in their own lives,” she said.

Reward yourself. Rewards are an important part of habit formation. When we brush our teeth, the reward is immediate — a minty fresh mouth. But some rewards — like weight loss or the physical changes from exercise — take longer to show up. That’s why it helps to build in some immediate rewards to help you form the habit. Listening to audiobooks while running, for example, or watching a favorite cooking show on the treadmill can help reinforce an exercise habit. Or plan an exercise date so the reward is time with a friend.

As we transition from 2020 into 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect nearly every aspect of our lives. For many, this health crisis has created a range of unique and individual impacts—including food access issues, income disruptions, and emotional distress.

Although we do not have concrete evidence regarding specific dietary factors that can reduce risk of COVID-19, we do know that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is critical to keeping our immune system strong. Beyond immunity, research has shown that individuals following five key habits—eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, keeping a healthy body weight, not drinking too much alcohol, and not smoking— live more than a decade longer than those who don’t. Plus, maintaining these practices may not only help us live longer, but also better. Adults following these five key habits at middle-age were found to live more years free of chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

While sticking to healthy habits is often easier said than done, we created this guide with the goal of providing some tips and strategies that may help. During these particularly uncertain times, we invite you to do what you can to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and hopefully (if you’re able to try out a new recipe or exercise, or pick up a fulfilling hobby) find some enjoyment along the way.

Changes such as taking the stairs instead of the lift, adding a fruit to a meal, having a glass of water at every opportune instance, and eating snacks in moderation are just some of the few steps to having a healthy life. In order to live healthy, a person should focus on keeping fit, eating healthy, checking on their weight, getting enough sleep, and avoiding risky behaviors such as smoking and taking alcohol in moderation.

One of the greatest impediments to living healthy is the lack of physical activity. Although many people recognize the benefits of keeping fit, they avoid it either because they think it is a waste of time, or they are used to a sedentary lifestyle. The truth is, the more a person engages in physical activity, the healthier they become.

Physical activity does not have to be vigorous, in fact, even simple activities such as gardening, walking, and partaking in domestic chores can greatly improve one’s health. Even recreational activities such as cycling, dancing and swimming can help in keeping fit.

The benefits of physical activity include a reduction of the risks of heart diseases and diabetes, improvement of mental health, strengthening of bones and muscles, and helping with a number of health niggles such as digestion and poor posture, among other benefits.

Eating well entails striving to have a balanced diet at all instances. A good diet not only helps in weight management, but it can also improve a person’s health and the overall quality of life. Every meal should include plenty of fruits and vegetables, grain products and legumes, but less of foods that contain more calories and fats. Although proteins rich foods such as meats are important to the body, they should be taken in moderation, and the focus should be on leaner meats (mainly white meat) and foods with little or no fat.

Consuming dairy products with little or no fats, such as skimmed milk, is another simple plan for reducing the quantity of calories entering the body. Eating habits such as eating while one is not hungry, skipping breakfast, and eating fast should be avoided. A person should also strive to drink as much water as possible since the body requires at least 8 cups of water each day.

One major step to being healthy is to maintain a healthy weight, and this may entail shedding off excess weight, gaining weight for underage persons, or maintaining that ideal weight. Eating right and participating in physical activities can go a long way in having a healthy weight and avoiding the health problems arising from being overweight.

To avoid being overweight or to shed off the extra pounds, a person should avoid high-calorie foods, or consume them in moderation and partake in regular physical activity. Trying to gain weight can be more difficult than losing weight. In gaining weight, one must not focus on consuming junk foods or snacks as this can clog the arteries and lead to heart diseases. Calories and fats must be obtained from healthy foods.

Failure to have enough sleep can have a negative impact on a person’s life, for instance, people who sleep less than seven hours a day are more exposed to catarrhal diseases than those who sleep for at least eight hours. The need for sleep varies among different persons, therefore, one should determine his/her own sleep requirements, and strive to have adequate sleep every day. As a caution, alcohol, or any other drug, should not be used to induce sleep as this would only lead to a pass out, not sleep.

Lifestyle choices such as avoiding cigarettes, avoiding excess calories from alcohol, sugar and fats, reducing the intake of high-fat foods, and partaking in physical activities should be emphasized on a day-to-day basis. Although alcohol has been found to be important to the body, it should be taken in moderation as it exposes the body to harmful compounds (cigarettes have the same effect).

All of us aspire to be healthy and engage in different activities to achieve this objective, however, there is no single way of ensuring that we are healthy for the rest our life. A healthy life is a cumulative product of various activities as outlined above, and discarding certain choices. The activities outlined must be observed on a day-to-day basis, and this does not have to mean making drastic changes, it is the simple, small changes that lead to a healthy life. In fact, drastic changes can lead to failure, or other side effects.

Healthy Exercise Habits in College

what are healthy habits essay

By Owen, a Writing Coach

Before coming to UNC, a high school teacher told me that time in college is divided between three main responsibilities: schoolwork, sleeping, and socializing. She said that you can only fully commit to two at a time, that any attempt at balancing all three will inevitably lead to either bad grades, no friends, or sleep-deprivation. Naturally, this terrified me. I was deeply afraid that whatever time management skills I had developed in high school would be powerless against the beast of higher education.

I was also afraid that I wouldn’t have time to run. Since starting cross country and track in high school, distance running had become an important part of my life. I loved the feeling of getting stronger and watching my times improve as I worked hard in training. I also valued running as a productive way to take a break from the stresses of life to focus on something simple and repetitive. The summer before I started at UNC, I set an ambitious goal for myself that, I hoped, would challenge me to continue improving my running as a college student: I wanted to run my first marathon and qualify for the Boston Marathon during my first year at UNC.This goal was certainly a stretch for me. I had never run anything close to the 26.2-mile distance and didn’t really know if my body could handle it. I also had no idea whether I’d have time for long training runs as a full-time student. Despite these doubts, I committed to my goal and was fortunate enough to achieve it. In the spring semester of my first year, I finished the Tobacco Road Marathon in a time of 2:53:11 to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Since then, I have finished both the Boston and Chicago marathons, with a personal best of 2:48:39.

Although balancing running with the many other commitments of a full-time student has been a challenge, I’ve managed to do so consistently for three years now. In the process, I have learned a lot about productivity, organization, and how I respond to stress and fatigue. I wanted to share a few key takeaways that may be helpful for anyone looking to prioritize exercise while also maintaining the rigorous schedule of a UNC student. Whether you’re training for your first marathon, hitting the gym, or going for walks around campus, I hope these five points will help you achieve your goals as an active student!

1. Find your people

The first organization I joined at UNC was the marathon club. This decision was probably the single greatest contributor to my exercise habits as a student. Through the team, I met many of my closest friends and had the benefit of a community that supported me as I pursued my goals. We regularly met for group runs and social events, which made running part of my extra-curricular calendar rather than a departure from it. As I prepared for my first marathon, I could easily consult more experienced runners to get advice on nutrition, workouts, and race strategy. Marathon team was an invaluable resource for me as I figured out how to run as a college student.

A group of people wearing athletic clothing posing for a photo outside of a brick building.

Joining a sport club, intramural team, or other student organization dedicated to a physical activity is a great step towards being active in college. Being part of a team with regularly scheduled practices meant that I could run with awesome people every afternoon instead of dragging myself away from homework to trudge through the streets of Chapel Hill by myself. The accountability that comes with exercising in a group can also be hugely important. I don’t know about you, but I am much more likely to wake up early to go to the gym if a friend is meeting me there than if I’m going alone. Joining student organizations or just finding a group of friends who exercise together can have tremendous impacts on your motivation to work towards your goals.

2. Set specific, ambitious, and achievable goals

We humans are naturally resistant to change. Through the process of building consistent running habits, I came to understand how my mind plays tricks on me to resist sustainable change. Setting new goals means preparing myself for an internal struggle against the urge to give up. For me, it’s important to set goals that are resistant to these mental attacks. For this reason, I try to make sure my goals are specific, ambitious, and achievable.

Specificity is a crucial step towards developing a strong goal. Goals that are too general are easily deconstructed by the mind as it tries to resist change. For example, “I want to start running this year” is very general. The amount of running one would have to do to achieve this goal is ambiguous. If this were my goal, and I had planned to wake up early one morning for a run, I would be likely to roll back over and go to sleep because my idea of what achieving this goal means can easily change over time. Maybe I want to run three times a week at first, but this soon diminishes to once, and pretty soon I’ve forgotten about the goal altogether. A specific goal, like “I want to run at least five days a week this year,” is much stronger against this natural temptation. With a goal like this in mind, I would be more likely to get out of bed to run because I know going back to sleep means giving up on a specific ambition.

Goals should also be both ambitious and achievable. This can be a difficult balance to strike, and the pitfalls of leaning too far in either direction can quickly lead to failure. Most goals I’ve given up on in running or elsewhere have been overly ambitious. When I set a goal too far outside the realm of my ability, it’s easy to say, “I would never have done that anyway,” and give up. Likewise, setting goals that are too easily achievable can be counter-productive in the development of an exercise habit. If I know my goal is probably going to be achieved without much difficulty, I will be less motivated to work towards it. This can mean that no real change occurs. As college students, the commitments we juggle daily can make real change difficult to come by. For me, setting goals that are just outside my comfort zone, ambitious yet achievable, has allowed me to continue working towards them when the going gets tough.

3. Plan for and prioritize exercise

Including exercise in my daily plans has been hugely important to maintaining my running habit. Especially when first adjusting to college life, I made sure to schedule my daily runs in a paper planner, just like I would any class assignment or social obligation. This tip is pretty quick and straightforward, but it goes a long way. When college becomes stressful and commitments start piling up, physical activity is often the first thing we let go. By scheduling my running in the same way I would anything else, I was able to continue recognizing it as a priority even when my attention was being pulled elsewhere.

4. Time your exercise strategically

When planning for and prioritizing exercise, as discussed above, I like to select strategic times that fit well within my schedule and interfere with other commitments as little as possible. For this reason, I typically run either first thing in the morning or at around 5 pm in the evening. I find that morning runs are a great way to start my day, as I have already accomplished my first task before getting to my first class. The roads are typically less busy, and, in the warmer months, the weather is much more comfortable. Running in the morning also allows me to be active in a time I wouldn’t otherwise be doing something very productive. I am not someone who typically rolls out of bed ready to work on an assignment, spending most of my mornings enjoying some quiet time before class. For this reason, morning runs allow me to replace this less productive time with exercise, accomplishing one of my daily tasks while waking me up! I schedule some of my runs at around 5 pm for similar reasons. In the late afternoon, I’m usually exhausted from a long day of classes, meetings, and work shifts. For me, this is a great time to run! Going for a jog, either with friends or by myself, rejuvenates my mind as I prepare for a productive evening. As with morning runs, this replaces a time I would usually be struggling to stay focused on work with a short break that improves my motivation and mood late in the day.

5. Listen to your body

In this last point, I’d like to acknowledge that staying active, especially in college, is HARD. While there are many strategies that can help make it easier, I don’t mean to gloss over this important fact. Being a college student can be a grueling, physical endeavor. Trying to add on another layer to this fatigue has left me feeling frustrated and defeated more times than I can count. For this reason, it’s important to recognize that listening to your body and staying safe is always the number one priority. If you’re exhausted and need a break, take it. If you’re worried waking up early to exercise will leave you sleep deprived for a big test, sleep in. As with anything, learning to balance exercising in college is just that, a balance. It’s impossible to always choose fitness over the million other things going on in the crazy life of a college student. So, listen to your body, know your limits, take breaks, eat well and often, and don’t be ashamed of taking care of yourself!

I hope these tips were helpful in providing some guidance on how to approach exercising as a college student. Though there are certainly many more strategies out there, these have served me well in my running and I hope they can do the same for you as you work towards your own goals. Thank you for taking the time to read this blog post! Happy running, walking, cycling, swimming, lifting, and everything in between!
