Open Research Archive
Based on the popular EPrints software, The Open Research Archive is the University’s institutional repository for all research outputs of researchers working at St Mary’s. The Archive also serves as a repository for other St Mary's academic outputs, including PhD theses and Masters dissertations with Distinction.
Publications and documents that should be added to the Open Research Archive include:
- Journal articles
- Conference proceedings
- Book chapters
- PhD and other higher research theses
- Masters dissertations with Distinction grades
The Open Research Archive is designed to provide full-text access to research outputs on open access wherever permitted by publishers. The Archive also collates a record of all scholarly outputs from within the University where full-text access is not permitted.
Open Access Policies
The Open Research Archive plays an important role in the externally mandated open access process for research publications. For more detailed information on the University’s Research Publications and Open Access Policy and REF2021 open access mandate for REF eligibility, please see here .
All research outputs are required to be deposited by St Mary's University researchers in the Open Research Archive immediately on acceptance of publication to ensure compliance with REF2021 open access policy and to enhance the visibility and accessibility to the research outputs created within the University.
- Go to the Open Research Archive , select 'Deposit now', login in and follow the on-screen prompts. All submissions are checked before being published online.
Ongoing Development
Altmetrics statistics.
We are continually enhancing the functionality of the Open Research Archive . We have embedded Altmetrics statistics , where available, to all of the records. This provides some visualisation of the social dynamics of the deposits’ usage across social and other digital media. A good example of what this allows us to capture can be seen on a paper by Oliver Runswick (SHAS), with a concise breakdown of some impact data, which is further expanded within Altmetrics itself:
We have also integrated ORCID functionality, allowing us to harvest the data on your scholarly outputs from ORCID records in cases where you have provided your ORCID iD to the publisher. This allows us to minimise the volume of data input by utilising a centralised pool of publications data.
IRUS-UK (Institutional Repository Usage Statistics-United Kingdom) provides COUNTER-conformant usage statistics for all content downloaded from participating UK institutional repositories (IRs). IRUS-UK systematically scrutinises the open data from institutional repositories and removes data created by machine harvesting. This helps to give an accurate download figure of items from our repository.
We also have the contents of the repository harvested and indexed by the UK's CORE shared discovery service . This process helps to expose the contents of the Open Research Archive more completely and accurately to interested audiences around the world.
Questions or queries?
If you have any questions about the Open Research Archive, such as open access publishing, article processing charges (APCs), data repositories, Publishers' embargoes, open licences and ORCID iDs, please email [email protected] .
PhD theses
St Mary's research students completing their doctorates are requested to deposit the full-text of their thesis in the St Mary's Open Research Archive . This will enable the thesis to be made discoverable and accessible online to researchers around the globe. For more information and instructions on this process please contact [email protected] .

Current and Former SMCM Students Present Aquatic Research
Two recent marine science graduates and one environmental studies major gave oral presentations at Morgan State’s Patuxent Environmental & Aquatic Research Laboratory (PEARL) annual internship symposium on Aug. 2.
Shelby Dittman ’24, Brittney Douglas ’24 and Sara Dapp ’25 all had internship opportunities — an example of the Honors College Promise to St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM) students through the Learning through Experiential and Applied Discovery (LEAD) Initiative — this summer at PEARL located on the shoreline of the Patuxent River in St. Leonard, Maryland.
Dittman, Douglas and Dapp spent 10 weeks researching their respective topics under the mentorship of PEARL faculty prior to presenting at the symposium.
PEARL research is designed to increase the understanding of coastal and environmental systems so that they can be properly managed and protected.
Under the mentorship of Ming Liu & Brittany Wolfe-Bryant, Dittman studied oysters at the aquaculture facility at PEARL, specifically focused on how oysters, susceptible to low salinity and disease, can be made more tolerant to low salinity levels in parts of the Chesapeake Bay and get less disease-prone for enhancing the oyster fishery in the Bay. For example, Dittman found in her research that growing oysters from egg-larvae-adults with added probiotics decreased oyster mortality and increased oyster size.
Elka Porter, associate professor of marine science at St. Mary’s College, said that what Dittman found in her research is of importance to oyster fisheries in the area. Porter said Dittman had a unique opportunity prior to her internship as she was recommended to work at PEARL’s hatchery during the spring semester. It was this opportunity that led to her internship.
Douglas and Dapp, under the mentorship of Tom Ihde, continued a decades-long blue crab ( Callinectes sapidus ) survey at PEARL to help determine the health of the blue crab fisheries in the Chesapeake Bay. This project began in 1968. The two researchers regularly went in the field via boat, to set traps in the Bay and collect blue crabs, on which they measured abundance, size, sex, as well as the fishing effort and environmental data. In addition to catching crabs, they processed and analyzed raw environmental data that accompanied the existing data from the project that had never been analyzed.
Porter explained that their projects “Analysis of Callinectes sapidus Catch and Environmental Data,” and “PEARL Blue Crab Survey: Analysis on Size and Environmental Factors “ respectively, helped provide an updated status on the Bay’s blue crab fisheries.

- Examine preliminary resources through your course readings and recommendations, your faculty member's suggestions, steps suggested below, and by consulting with librarians.
- Identify concepts and terms that make up the topic statement.
The Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) provides these guidelines on writing a thesis statement :
- Determine what kind of paper you are writing. Is it:
- analytical ?
- expository (explanatory)?
- argumentative ?
If you are writing a text that does not fall under these three categories (e.g., a narrative), a thesis statement somewhere in the first paragraph could still be helpful to your reader.
2. Your thesis statement should be specific—it should cover only what you will discuss in your paper and should be supported with specific evidence.
3. The thesis statement usually appears at the end of the first paragraph of a paper.
4. Your topic may change as you write, so you may need to revise your thesis statement to reflect exactly what you have discussed in the paper.
Examples and more tips are available from the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) .
UNLV University Libraries provide a tutorial on Choosing & Refining Your Topic . Questions to consider include:
- your general topic,
Guidance from the Temple University Writing Center states that an effective thesis statement should be
- substantial
- supportable
