Electricity is one of the biggest gifts that science has given to us. It is mostly produced by burning fossil fuels and fossil fuels are non-renewable. This means that once we use up all the fossil fuels present on this planet, we will have to solely depend on solar, wind and hydropower to generate electricity.

Although these resources do help, the use of renewable energy is not widespread and thus, a large part of the world may end up having to live without electricity. That’s why we must save electricity. We must be mindful of our usage of electricity. We must turn off light bulbs and fans when they aren’t in use. Saving electricity is the need of the day.

Today, it is very difficult to imagine a life without electricity. Be it light bulbs or fans, heaters or air-conditioners, mixer-grinders or ovens, everything runs on electricity. Even our mobile phones and computers wouldn’t be able to function without electricity. And that is why it is very important for us to save electricity.

Electricity is generated around the world mostly using fossil fuels like coal. Fossil fuels are non-renewable resources. This means that once we use up all the fossil fuels present on this planet, we will have to solely depend on solar, wind and hydropower to generate electricity. These days, many parts of the world use these renewable resources to generate a portion of the total electricity needed. But since producing electricity using such methods is neither very well-developed nor widespread, it is possible that if we empty the reserves of fossil fuels, a large part of this world will be left without electricity.

We must conserve electricity to ensure that our future is bright. We must be mindful of our usage of electricity. We must always remember to turn off light bulbs, fans and other electrical appliances when they are not in use. Instead of watching television all day long, we should encourage each other to go out and play in nature. Only by reducing our usage of electricity will we be able to save it.

Over the last 200 years, science has bestowed countless gifts upon humanity. Out of all these gifts, the one that has proved to be the most important is electricity. Today, it is very difficult to imagine a life without electricity. Be it light bulbs or fans, heaters or air-conditioners, mixer-grinders or ovens, everything runs on electricity.

Even our mobile phones and computers wouldn’t be able to function without electricity. We have now become dependent on electrical appliances for the smallest of things like hair drying, heating food and washing our socks. That is why it is very important for us to save electricity.

In most nations across the world, electricity is produced using fossil fuels such as coal. Fossil fuels are non-renewable resources. This means that we can not go on and on and expect that we will always have electricity. Once we use up all the fossil fuels present on this planet, we will have to solely depend on renewable resources such as solar, wind and water to generate electricity. These days, some parts of the world use these renewable resources to generate a portion of the total electricity needed. But producing electricity using such methods is neither very well-developed nor widespread.

It is not only possible but also probable that if we empty the reserves of fossil fuels, a large part of this world will be left without electricity. Therefore, we must conserve electricity to ensure that our future is bright. We must be mindful of our usage of electricity. We must always remember to turn off light bulbs, fans and other electrical appliances when they are not in use. It is actually quite easy to save electricity. We can wash clothes by hand instead of turning the washing machine on for every single piece of garment.

We can also use natural light instead of depending on electric lamps during the day. Instead of watching television all day long, we should encourage each other to go out and enjoy nature. We should encourage kids to play with each other rather than watching TV all day long or playing video games on their computers. This would not only save electricity but also help kids live an active and healthy life.

We should launch campaigns to spread awareness amongst people about the importance of saving electricity. We should also push the government to adopt renewable ways of electricity generation and encourage people to install solar panels on the top of their houses. This would make us less dependent on fossil fuels for electricity. Electricity is a precious resource for us that’s why we must focus on saving electricity.

Hopefully, all your doubts have been resolved regarding this context after going through this lesson. If you still have any confusion, kindly let me know through some quick comments.

Essay on Electricity

Introduction.

Imagine if we had to endure the unbearable heat during the summers or live in darkness during the night. We can’t think of a life without a fan or light, can we? But have you wondered what makes them work? Electricity is the beautiful phenomenon that is behind the running of various appliances today. We cannot underestimate the power of electricity in our lives, and this long essay on electricity will help your kids to be familiar with its uses and benefits.

Essay on Electricity

Importance of Electricity

There is hardly anything that does not work on electricity. Whether we need to watch TV or run a grinder, electricity is an important component that makes them function. This long essay on electricity shows how electricity makes our lives easier and more comfortable. Earlier, if we relied on handmade fans to keep ourselves cool, we now have to simply tap on the switch to run our electric fans, pedestal fans or ceiling fans. Similarly, the old kerosene lamps are now replaced by modern lights and tubes that fill the whole place with light. In this manner, electricity has given us many comforts, and it is hard for us to imagine going back to living without it.

Nearly every aspect of human life has benefited from using electricity. Apart from simplifying our lives at home by inventing electrical appliances, electricity has enabled easy communication through the introduction of telephones and fax machines. Besides, its use is found in many industries and factories to run large machines. If electric trains took the place of steam engines in the transportation industry, new devices and instruments, like X-ray machines, scanning devices, ECG and such, have changed the way the medical industry operates. Thus, we can say that the unseen presence of electricity has filled our lives with hope and joy.

Ways to Save Electricity

We all know that we get electricity from coal and water. Coal and petroleum are non-renewable resources, and there is a limit to using them, as it would take enormous time to replenish these resources. Thus, it is important to use electricity productively. Give your children this free printable essay on electricity from BYJU’S so that they understand its significance.

In this save electricity essay, there are some effective tips to conserve energy. We often tend to switch on the lights even in broad daylight or use a fan when it is extremely cold. Such unnecessary use of electricity must be avoided as you can open your windows to let in light and wind. Limit the charging of your phones and laptops, and remember to unplug them after it is fully charged. Also, try to spend maximum time outdoors so that you can restrict the time of watching TV. Thus, by taking such simple measures, we can save electricity.

  • Energy Conservation is necessary for coping with the expenses spent on energy services.
  • Energy Conservation is necessary for reducing air pollution.
  • For preserving the natural resources for future generations energy conservation is necessary.
  • For availing the natural scarce resources to rural to urban areas its conservation is necessary.

Paragraph 3 – 150 Words

Energy conservation is a common phenomenon for the world of the growing population. In real sense, energy is the service that the world is using on a daily basis. The growing population demands more and more energy to be consumed. This can create a misbalance between the energy available for society and the energy which is continuously spending.

For financial security and nation wise social security conserving the energy services are necessary. Worldwide securing the energy is a common phenomenon. There are various methodologies and simple steps that we can include in our day-to-day life for saving energy. What are we using today; we have to secure it for the future.

By keeping this thing in mind, energy saving can be done on a mass level. Refrigerators and Air Conditioners are said to the appliances that consume electricity on a large basis. The gases produced by these coolers are harmful to the environment. Thus, simple habits like the installation of stabilizers for maintaining the voltage can consume less electricity.

Paragraph 4 – 200 Words

Energy Conservation is the preventive measures for conserving the naturally available energy. It involves the maximum utilization of energy in an efficient way. There are various ways that can be counted as energy conservation methods. These are as follows:

  • Using LED and CFL Light Bulbs instead of traditional light bulbs.
  • Using appliances that are energy efficient.
  • Installation of Power strips as they will provide an option of using various appliances’ switches at the same time.
  • Turning off the T.V., Radio, Microwave, PC, etc appliances after using it.
  • Switching to Thermostat based devices form the traditional appliances of maintaining the temperature.
  • Using water heaters of lower voltage.
  • Changing our day-to-day behavior of using Energy services.
  • Using the Upgraded method of the HVAC system in households.
  • Keeping a check on water uses.
  • While using Washing Machines, the laundry part should be done carefully.
  • Fossil fuels or Fuels should be used in an efficient way.
  • On the Red signals of road, turning off the vehicle engines can be a smart move for saving the fuels.
  • Energy audits at home can be a move for saving energy.
  • Installation of Solar Panels, Rain Water harvesting system can contribute to conserving energy.

Paragraph 5 – 250 Words

Energy Conservation is the method of conserving the naturally available energy sources and energy services for the world. There are various methods of conserving the energy but question is that why there is a need for conserving it? The main motto of energy conservation is to fulfill the demands of the future generations.

The government has implemented a tax policy for energy services. This taxation policy involves a tax on electricity, water, gas available for households. This policy is implemented by the motive of less-consumption of energy services by households. This is also a contribution towards the poor and rural people for availing of the energy services.

The wastage of energy sources can be lower down due to the fear of heavy tax implemented on its use. Energy Conservation can also be termed as energy–efficiency. Electricity, Fossil Fuels, Water, Heat, and Natural Gases are naturally found and processed form of energy which we are using in our daily life.

In the United States, energy-efficiency methods are announced by the government itself. The use of HVAC constructed buildings is also one of the architectural plans. Various campaigns and NGOs are working for the Energy Conservation. In India, Power-Cut is a nationwide issue. This is because of the scarcity of Energy sources. One of the reasons behind less consumption of energy is forgery and fraud of electricity while distributing it. Rural India is still not much boon by electricity. For resolving all these social issues Conservation of Energy is necessary.

Save Energy Essay

‘When the sun is bright, say no to tube light’. I know this sounds more like a nursery rhyme but trust me, it is the cheat code to save energy for a sustainable future. Today, the annual global energy conservation is 580 million terajoules, and do you know where we get the most of this energy? The sun and Earth’s natural resources. Governments and NGOs across the world are organising climate and energy conservation summits to raise awareness and implement sustainable energy guidelines. Today, our Save Energy essay will guide you towards this modern approach to energy conservation and how do we achieve it.

Why Should We Save Energy?

In the words of Jimmy Carter, one of the most admired former U.S. presidents, ¨Because we are now running out of gas and oil, we must prepare quickly for a third change, to strict conservation and to the use of… Permanent renewable energy sources, like solar power

The world of today needs more important resources. Among those, energy is one of the most important ones therefore it is crucial to save energy for many reasons, impacting our environment and daily lives.

As of 2024, global energy consumption is rising continuously and is putting strain on natural resources and the issues related to the environment. As per IEA (International Energy Agency), energy demand has increased by an average of 3.4 percent annually through 2026. It should be noted there was a rise in consumption from 18 percent in 2015 to 20 percent in 2023.

One of the primary reasons to save energy is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Efficient consumption of energy via solar PV and wind generation for the years 2021 to 2022 helped around 465 Mt of Carbon Dioxide emissions in the power sector.

Without cleaning energy technologies which further included eclectic vehicles, and other heat pumps saving 85 Mt Carbon Dioxide would not be possible.

Additionally, saving energy helps in leading economic benefits too. Practising energy-efficiency practices and technologies helps at ground level to save energy. Moreover, conservation of energy ensures the longer life of non-renewable resources such as fossil fuels, coal, oil, and natural gas.

In conclusion, saving energy helps not only protect our environment but also reduce the costs of consumption which further leads to a sustainable future. Small changes in our daily activities can contribute to a greener and more energy-efficient world.

How Can We Save Energy?

We all know that energy conservation helps not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also promote sustainable development. Now the question is, how can we save energy at ground level? So here are some simple but effective ways to save energy:

1. At Home:

  • Practice turning off lights and appliances when they are not in use.
  • Replace the more energy-consuming bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs.
  • It is advisable to adjust the temperature of the air-conditioner accordingly.
  • Do not forget to unplug the electronics and charge them when not in use. Practice using energy-efficient appliances and equipment, which also make efficient use of energy.

2. At School:

  • Peers should be made aware of ” The Car Pooling” practice. Also, the use of public transportation should be boosted.
  • Children should be encouraged to use energy carefully. The practice of energy-saving habits such as turning off computers and other electronic devices when not in use should be taught.
  • Regularly setting up energy-saving campaigns and competitions can also help raise awareness about saving energy.
  • Special classes should be given to promote and install solar panels or other renewable energy sources.

Government initiatives and policies such as the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC), the Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) flagship programme of the Bureau of Energy under the National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE), Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) and many more are notable examples that are led by the government for the sustainability of energy.

Saving energy is not a sole activity; instead, it is a collective responsibility that needs the active participation of individuals, communities, businesses and governments. By adopting the correct practices of saving energy in our daily lives, we can contribute to a greener way of life and a brighter future for ourselves as well as for future generations.

Speech On Energy Conservation [1,2,3 Minutes]

Energy is indispensable for life on Earth. It is needed for the growth of agriculture, industry, transport and communication etc. We use to perform various tasks such as running machines, cooking food etc. Unfortunately, we are currently dependent on conventional energy sources which are exhaustible.

1 to 2 Minute Speech On Energy Conservation

Before I deliver my speech I would like to wish you all the best wishes & I also want to thank you a lot for having me a chance to share my views on this important topic i.e. Energy Conservation.

Today, we are surrounded by a lot of tools, gadgets, and technologies which make our daily lives much easier. For example; vehicles help us cover distances in less time, washing machine helps us to wash our clothes, and microwave oven helps us quickly prepare food.

All of these tools, gadgets and technologies do not work for free. They need the required power supply to work. This power is generated through various methods which involve the burning of conventional energy sources such as coal, petroleum, natural gas, electricity etc.

These sources of energy are called non-renewable sources of energy because they are present in limited quantities. For this reason, there is a need to use energy in an efficient way or conserve energy by using these services as less as possible. It will help us in sustainable development.

Another reason for energy conservation is environmental protection. The burning of many fossil fuels such as petroleum and coal produces a lot of pollution which is neither good for the environment nor for human health. So, everyone should contribute his effort to conserve energy.

In short, energy conservation is the need of the hour. Every individual can help conserve energy by adopting simple habits such as using a bicycle for short distances, switching off home appliances when not in use, and making others aware of the same. Thank you!

Short Speech On Energy Conservation

3-Minute Speech On Energy Conservation

I cordially welcome all of you gathered here. I am here to speak a few words on Energy Conservation. Before I start my speech, I would like to wish you a good day. Also, I want to thank you for having me this valuable opportunity.

Newton’s first law states that  every object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless compelled to change its state by the action of an external force . It means we need to put effort to perform any task in the universe and this effort will require energy.

Without using energy no task can be accomplished. From cooking food to running heavy machinery. every important thing is executed with the help of energy. Hence, energy is the most required thing for running the world smoothly.

Today, we have two types of energy sources i.e. conventional and non-conventional. Conventional energy sources are generally non-renewable sources of energy. For a long time, these sources of energy are extensively being used in a manner that their known reserves have been depleted to a great extent.

If it continues we will soon face a scarcity of energy and hence we will not witness sustainable development on the planet. Apart from this, the excessive use of fossil fuels contaminates the environment, which is not good for our health too.

This is why energy conservation is the need of the hour. It can be done in two ways. One, we reduce the use of services that involve the use of energy. Number two, we learn to use energy efficiently.

On the one hand, scientists and researchers are finding ways to reduce energy consumption. On the other hand, individuals are busy with greater energy consumption so that they can feed their comfort. Energy conservation is not possible until the general public understands their responsibility.

Every individual can help conserve energy by adopting simple habits such as using a bicycle for short distances, switching off home appliances when not in use, and making others aware of the same. Most importantly, we must search for energy-efficient products in the market.

Energy-efficient products are quite expensive but they are worth it because not only will they save energy but they also help you save money on bills. At last, I want to ask you all a question. Do you want a comfortable life for yourself or for future generations? Most of you will want to do both.

So, save energy at least for your future generation. This is all that I wanted to say. I hope you like my words. Thank you!

This freedom was achieved after countless movements such as the Civil Disobedience movement. The nation would not have attained independence, had it not been for notable freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Lala Lajpat Rai, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bipin Chandra Pal and many others.

Independence Day 2024 Speech in 500 Words

Respected guests, principal, teachers and my dear friends, we are gathered here today to celebrate the 78th Independence Day of our nation. India achieved independence on August 15, 1947. It was an extremely proud moment when the national flag was unfurled at the Red Fort by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. This momentous occasion marked the end of the British rule in India.

The British came to our nation, which was then known as, ‘Sone ki Chidiya’, for the purpose of trade. But they soon began taking advantage of the discords between people. The East India Company (EIC) took permission to carry out trade. The EIC gradually began expanding its operations and established factories in various parts of India.

The British were successful in driving out French, Dutch and Portuguese traders out of the country. It was the Battle of Plassey (1757) which marked the successful establishment of the British rule in India. The British made Mir Jafar the puppet Nawab of Bengal in exchange for the territory of 24 parganas.

The discriminatory policies of the British led to the Revolt of 1857. This event marked the first occasion of organised resistance against the EIC. The revolt was started by the sepoys of the EIC’s army and later spread to various cities. The revolt failed due to limited participation and lack of leadership.

After the revolt, power was transferred from the EIC to the crown. The path to independence from the British saw various movements such as the Non-cooperation movement, Khilafat movement, Civil Disobedience movement and the Quit India movement. Behind India’s independence lies the rebellions and movements carried out by many freedom fighters. These people fought with unwavering determination to achieve freedom for all.

Some of these brave freedom fighters were Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Bhagat Singh, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Lala Lajpat Rai, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Rani Laxmi Bai, Mangal Pandey and countless others.

On the eve of India’s independence, Pandit Nehru gave the famous ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech. I would like to take this opportunity to quote some historic lines from the speech. Pandit Nehru said, ‘’Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.’’

4 .India was supposed to get independence on June 30, 1948. But the date was preponed in order to avoid the bloodbath.

5 .The first Indian flag was hoisted on August 7, 1906 at Parsee Bagaan Square in then Calcutta.

6 .The date of independence for both India and Pakistan was August 15, 1947 but Lord Mountbatten selected August 14 for the ceremony of transfer of power to Pakistan as he wanted to attend the ceremonies of both nations.

FACT FOCUS: A look at claims made by Trump at news conference

Trump lashes out at Harris, recommits to a Sept. 10 debate at hourlong news conference

Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump talks about his ear as he speaks to reporters during a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate Thursday, Aug. 8, 2024, in Palm Beach, Fla. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)

In his first news conference since Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee for president, former President Donald Trump said he would debate her on Sept. 10 and pushed for two more debates. The Republican presidential nominee spoke for more than an hour, discussing a number of issues facing the country and then taking questions from reporters. He made a number of false and misleading claims. Many of them have been made before.

Here’s a look at some of those claims.

CROWD SIZES

Image

CLAIM: “The biggest crowd I’ve ever spoken — I’ve spoken to the biggest crowds. Nobody’s spoken to crowds bigger than me. If you look at Martin Luther King when he did his speech, his great speech, and you look at ours, same real estate, same everything, same number of people, if not we had more. And they said he had a million people, but I had 25,000 people.”

THE FACTS: Trump was comparing the crowd at his speech in front of the White House on Jan. 6, 2021, to the crowd that attended Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech on Aug. 28, 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial.

But far more people are estimated to have been at the latter than the former.

Image

Approximately 250,000 people attended the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, at which King gave his speech, according to the National Park Service . The Associated Press reported in 2021 that there were at least 10,000 people at Trump’s address.

Moreover, Trump and King did not speak in the same location. King spoke from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial , which looks east toward the Washington Monument. Trump spoke at the Ellipse , a grassy area just south of the White House.

CLAIM: “Nobody was killed on Jan. 6.”

THE FACTS: That’s false. Five people died in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot and its immediate aftermath. Pro-Trump rioters breached the U.S. Capitol that day amid Congress’ effort to certify Democrat Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.

Among the deceased are Ashli Babbitt, a Trump supporter shot and killed by police, and Brian Sicknick, a police officer who died the day after battling the mob. Four additional officers who responded to the riot killed themselves in the following weeks and months.

Babbitt, a 35-year-old Air Force veteran from San Diego, was shot and killed by a police officer as she climbed through a broken part of a Capitol door during the violent riot. Trump has often cited Babbitt’s death while lamenting the treatment of those who attended a rally outside the White House that day and then marched to the Capitol, many of whom fought with police.

DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION

Image

CLAIM: “The presidency was taken away from Joe Biden, and I’m no Biden fan, but I tell you what, from a constitutional standpoint, from any standpoint you look at, they took the presidency away.”

THE FACTS: There is nothing in the Constitution that prevents the Democratic Party from making Vice President Kamala Harris its nominee. That process is determined by the Democratic National Committee.

Harris officially claimed the nomination Monday following a five-day online voting process, receiving 4,563 delegate votes out of 4,615 cast, or about 99% of participating delegates. A total of 52 delegates in 18 states cast their votes for “present,” the only other option on the ballot.

The vice president was the only candidate eligible to receive votes after no other candidate qualified by the party’s deadline following President Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the race on July 21.

THE ECONOMY

CLAIM: Suggesting things would be different if he had been in office rather than Biden: “You wouldn’t have had inflation. You wouldn’t have had any inflation because inflation was caused by their bad energy problems. Now they’ve gone back to the Trump thing because they need the votes. They’re drilling now because they had to go back because gasoline was going up to 7, 8, 9 dollars a barrel.”

THE FACTS: There would have been at least some inflation if Trump had been reelected in 2020 because many of the factors causing inflation were outside a president’s control. Prices spiked in 2021 after cooped-up Americans ramped up their spending on goods such as exercise bikes and home office furniture, overwhelming disrupted supply chains. U.S. auto companies, for example, couldn’t get enough semiconductors and had to sharply reduce production, causing new and used car prices to shoot higher. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in March 2022 also sent gas and food prices soaring around the world, as Ukraine’s wheat exports were disrupted and many nations boycotted Russian oil and gas.

Still, under Biden, U.S. oil production reached a worldwide record level earlier this year .

Many economists, including some Democrats, say Biden’s $1.9 trillion financial support package, approved in March 2021, which provided a $1,400 stimulus check to most Americans, helped fuel inflation by ramping up demand. But it didn’t cause inflation all by itself. And Trump supported $2,000 stimulus checks in December 2020, rather than the $600 checks included in a package he signed into law in December 2020.

Prices still spiked in countries with different policies than Biden’s, such as France , Germany and the U.K. , though mostly because of the sharp increase in energy costs stemming from Russia’s invasion.

IMMIGRATION

CLAIM: “Twenty million people came over the border during the Biden-Harris administration — 20 million people — and it could be very much higher than that. Nobody really knows.”

THE FACTS: Trump’s 20 million figure is unsubstantiated at best, and he didn’t provide sources.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports 7.1 million arrests for illegal crossings from Mexico from January 2021 through June 2024. That’s arrests, not people. Under pandemic-era asylum restrictions, many people crossed more than once until they succeeded because there were no legal consequences for getting turned back to Mexico. So the number of people is lower than the number of arrests.

In addition, CBP says it stopped migrants 1.1 million times at official land crossings with Mexico from January 2021 through June 2024, largely under an online appointment system to claim asylum called CBP One.

U.S. authorities also admitted nearly 500,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela under presidential authority if they had financial sponsors and arrived at an airport.

All told, that’s nearly 8.7 million encounters. Again, the number of people is lower due to multiple encounters for some.

There are an unknown number of people who eluded capture, known as “got-aways” in Border Patrol parlance. The Border Patrol estimates how many but doesn’t publish that number.

CLAIM: Vice President Kamala Harris “was the border czar 100% and all of a sudden for the last few weeks she’s not the border czar anymore.”

THE FACTS: Harris was appointed to address “root causes” of migration in Central America. That migration manifests itself in illegal crossings to the U.S., but she was not assigned to the border.

NEW YORK CASES

CLAIM: “The New York cases are totally controlled out of the Department of Justice.”

THE FACTS: Trump was referring to two cases brought against him in New York — one civil and the other criminal.

Neither has anything to do with the U.S. Department of Justice.

The civil case was initiated by a lawsuit from New York Attorney General Letitia James. In that case, Trump was ordered in February to pay a $454 million penalty for lying about his wealth for years as he built the real estate empire that vaulted him to stardom and the White House.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a state-level prosecutor, brought the criminal case . In May, a jury found Trump guilty on 34 felony counts in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through a hush money payment to a porn actor who said the two had sex.

___ Associated Press writers Melissa Goldin and Elliot Spagat and economics writer Christopher Rugaber contributed to this article. ___

An earlier version of this story mixed up “latter” and “former” in the third paragraph. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech on Aug. 28, 1963, drew a far larger crowd than Donald Trump’s speech near the White House on Jan. 6, 2021.

1 Minute Speech on Save Electricity In English

A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of ‘Save Electricity’.

One must look beyond the fact that because our electronic gadgets and devices switch on at a moment’s notice, electricity is not available in abundance. Again, power backups (UPS) and generators are not a solution and would not provide endless electricity!

Even if you do not care for this, save electricity for fiscal benefits! Electricity is costly!

Ukraine's Olympic fencing champion has sold her sabre at auction to raise money for her country's war effort.

Olga Kharlan's sabre sold for 10 million hryvnias (£188,075) during the auction for the Serhiy Prytula Charity Foundation.

In a post on Facebook, the charity said: "Thanks to Olga for such a valuable artifact.

"This sabre has already brought one victory, and its price will soon bring victories on the battlefield."

Kharlan won Ukraine's first medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics after beating South Korea's Choi Sebin 15-14 for the women's sabre fencing bronze.

At least two people have been killed and several have been injured after shelling hit a shopping centre in the Russian-controlled part of Donetsk, Russian state news agencies have reported.

"Preliminarily there is information about at least two dead", the TASS news agency cited local operational services as saying, adding that the number of dead could rise.

Local authorities were quoted as blaming Ukraine for the attack.

In our 14.40 post, we told you the Kremlin-installed governor of the city, Denis Pushilin, had said the strikes sparked a fire of more than 10,000 square metres at the "Galaktika" shopping centre.

He also said seven people had been injured.

The Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine was illegally annexed by Russia in 2022, despite its forces only partially controlling it.

In recent days, Russia has been pushing forward to the northwest of Donetsk, with Ukraine ordering the evacuation of the nearby city of Pokrovsk in response.

Pokrovsk, which has been in Moscow's sights for several months, is one of Ukraine's main defensive strongholds and a key logistics hub in the region.

Its capture would compromise Ukraine's defensive abilities and supply routes.

The Russian defence ministry has released a video purporting to show new recruits training for an "assault detachment".

In the clip, which has not been verified by Sky News, a group of people in army uniforms run from the back of a vehicle and fire weapons across a piece of dry land.

In a post on Telegram, the ministry said the recruits were practising capturing enemy strongholds at a training ground.

It added that servicemen who helped capture a village in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region were preparing the fighters for their units.

Donetsk, which was illegally annexed by Russia in the early days of the war, is partially controlled by Moscow's forces.

Once the troops are trained, they will join forces fighting in the south Donetsk area, the ministry said.

A shopping centre in Russian-controlled Donetsk city has been destroyed in what Russia has branded as a Ukrainian attack.

Earlier, Denis Pushilin, the Kremlin-installed governor of the city, said the apparent strikes sparked a fire of more than 10,000 square metres at the "Galaktika" shopping centre and injured seven people.

Black smoke has been pouring from the building in the aftermath of the blaze.

The eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk is in "real trouble" as Russian forces quickly close in, says our defence and security analyst Michael Clarke .

While Russia is pulling forces from elsewhere, including Kaliningrad and the Crimea peninsula, in response to Ukraine's invasion of Kursk, troops are staying put in Donbas, where Russia has been making steady advances for months.

Moscow is focusing its efforts on the Donetsk region and a major push towards the key Ukrainian logistics hub of Pokrovsk is ramping up.

"That's where the Ukrainians are suffering. The Russians are still moving towards Pokrovsk," says Clarke.

"Pokrovsk is in real danger now, and I think the Russians are determined to try to take it even before they take back territory [in Kursk] to prove that they're not going to be distracted from it."

Clarke adds that the "risks are rising on both sides" with Russia and Ukraine both "putting more chips onto the table".

Volunteers in Moscow are packing trucks with humanitarian aid intended for residents of Russia's Kursk region.

Authorities say more than 120,000 residents in the border region have already had to leave their homes as a result of the Ukrainian invasion.

Evacuations have also been taking place this week in the adjacent Belgorod region.

At least seven people have been injured and a fire has erupted at a shopping centre after a series of Ukrainian strikes in the Russian-controlled city of Donetsk, a Russian official in the region has claimed.

Denis Pushilin, the Kremlin-installed governor of the city, claimed the strikes sparked a fire of more than 10,000 square metres at the "Galaktika" shopping centre.

Seven civilians, including a teenager, were wounded, he said, with no deaths reported.

Sky News cannot independently verify the governor's claims. A video posted online shows smoke and flames rising from a shopping centre, purportedly in Donetsk.

Alleged strikes come as Russia captures Donetsk territory

Mr Pushilin's claim of Ukrainian attacks comes as Russian forces advance and capture more territory in Ukrainian-controlled areas of the Donetsk region.

Earlier, the Russian defence ministry claimed its forces had taken control of the village of Serhiivka, while authorities ordered the rapid evacuation of the nearby city of Pokrovsk (see 11.16am post).

Pokrovsk, which has been in Moscow's sights for several months, is one of Ukraine's main defensive strongholds and a key logistics hub in the Donetsk region.

Its capture would compromise Ukraine's defensive abilities and supply routes.

Our security and defence analyst Michael Clarke has provided some insight into what happened when 100 Russian soldiers in Kursk were captured in one go by the Ukrainians this week.

The soldiers of Russia's 488th rifle regiment, who were mostly conscripts, "ran away" when they came up against a large unit of Ukrainian troops, Clarke says.

As they fled, they were fired on by Chechen forces on the Russia side, who were "there to stop them running away," he explains.

"They went the other way, went back towards the enemy and surrendered. So a whole company of young conscripts, all 18, 19-year-old boys, surrendered," adds Clarke.

But he says that while "several hundred" prisoners have been taken by Ukraine during its invasion of Kursk, "it hasn't all gone the Ukrainians' way".

"There's evidence that the some of the big Ukrainian units have been ambushed as well. So the fighting is very fragmentary - it's not coherent."

You can watch Clarke's full analysis of today's developments here:

Russian forces are being deployed in "greater force" to Kursk after initial "disarray and disorganisation", the UK Ministry of Defence has said.

In its latest intelligence update, the MoD said Ukrainian troops had penetrated the Russian border region "to a depth ranging between 10-25km over a frontage of approximately 40km".

It said Russia's established defensive lines and border forces were "not prepared" for last week's attacks.

"After initial disarray and disorganisation, Russian forces have deployed in greater force to the region, including likely from elsewhere along the contact line," the MoD said.

"They have also begun to construct additional defensive positions in an effort to prevent Ukrainian advances."

The thinking behind Ukraine's shock invasion of Russian border regions over the last two weeks has been the subject of intense speculation since it began on 6 August.

An aide to Volodymyr Zelenskyy has now offered a possible insight into Kyiv's plan, saying the incursion in Kursk was needed to convince Russia to start "fair" talks on a peace settlement.

Presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said Kyiv needed to "inflict significant tactical defeats on Russia".

"In the Kursk region, we can clearly see how the military tool is being used objectively to persuade [Russia] to enter a fair negotiation process," he wrote in a post to X.

Mr Podolyak said Ukraine was "not interested" in occupying Russian territory and was waging an "exclusively defensive war".

250 Words Essay on Save Energy

Introduction.

Energy conservation is a pressing global issue, demanding immediate attention. As the world’s natural resources are rapidly depleting, the need to save energy becomes paramount. It is our responsibility to ensure the sustainability of our planet for future generations.

The Importance of Saving Energy

Energy is the lifeblood of modern civilization. It powers our homes, fuels our transportation, and drives our industries. However, the excessive and inefficient use of energy contributes to environmental degradation, climate change, and resource depletion. By saving energy, we can reduce our carbon footprint, slow down global warming, and preserve the earth’s natural resources.

There are numerous ways to save energy, ranging from simple everyday habits to significant technological advancements. At an individual level, we can conserve energy by switching off lights and appliances when not in use, using energy-efficient devices, and choosing public transportation or carpooling.

On a larger scale, industries can adopt energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy sources, and waste-to-energy conversion methods. Governments can promote energy conservation through policies, regulations, and public awareness campaigns.

In conclusion, saving energy is not just a choice, but a necessity for our survival. It requires collective efforts from individuals, industries, and governments. By saving energy, we can ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for our planet and its inhabitants.

500 Words Essay on Save Energy

Energy conservation is critical for several reasons. Firstly, a significant proportion of the world’s energy comes from non-renewable resources like coal, oil, and natural gas. These resources are finite and are depleting at an alarming rate due to overconsumption. Saving energy means reducing the rate of depletion of these resources, thus prolonging their availability.

Secondly, the extraction and use of these non-renewable resources have severe environmental implications. They contribute to air and water pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change. By saving energy, we can mitigate these environmental impacts and contribute to the sustainability of our planet.

One of the simplest ways is by improving energy efficiency. This involves using appliances that consume less energy for the same output, such as LED lights instead of incandescent bulbs, or energy-efficient refrigerators and air conditioners.

Another method is by adopting renewable sources of energy, like solar and wind power. These sources are sustainable and have minimal environmental impact. By installing solar panels or wind turbines, we can generate our own electricity and reduce our dependence on non-renewable resources.

Role of Technology and Innovation

Innovations in renewable energy technology have made it more efficient and cost-effective, making it a viable alternative to traditional energy sources. Smart technologies like IoT and AI can help in monitoring and managing energy consumption in real-time, leading to significant energy savings.

In conclusion, saving energy is a collective responsibility that requires the participation of all stakeholders, including individuals, communities, governments, and corporations. By adopting energy-efficient practices and technologies, and by shifting towards renewable sources of energy, we can ensure the sustainability of our energy resources and contribute to the well-being of our planet. The ‘Save Energy’ concept is not just about preserving resources for the future, but also about creating a sustainable and healthy environment for all.

Labour-run council to fine people £100 for swearing in street

Free speech campaigners say Thanet District Council is ‘restricting fundamental rights and liberties’

A view of Broadstairs, with its busy beach in the foreground

A Labour-run council has imposed a controversial new order which threatens on-the-spot fines of £100 for swearing in the street.

Thanet District Council is facing a legal challenge after adopting a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) that bans behaviour that might “distress” people.

It means any of its 130,000 residents, or visitors to the Kent coastal region , could be fined for “using language or behaviour causing or likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to any other person”.

People could also face punishment if using a public space “otherwise in accordance with its intended use, or when directed not to do so by an authorised officer”.

There is also a prohibition on congregating while being “abusive, alarming, threatening, insulting, intimidating, harassing, distressing or otherwise causing a disturbance to other members of the public”.

Street performers pose in Covent Garden

Campaigners against the misuse of PSPOs say the Thanet order, which runs for one year, is one of the “worst” they have seen. They say it effectively criminalises free speech by creating a strict liability offence which depends on the judgment of local officials, with no legal safeguards.

The Free Speech Union, which campaigns against restrictions to individual liberty , has written to the council ahead of launching a potential lawsuit unless it changes course.

The campaign group argues that the Thanet PSPO could criminalise, for example, a legitimate political protest outside the council offices, or a religious preacher standing in the town centre giving a sermon on “Christian beliefs about sexuality”.

They argue that an atheist activist giving a public speech in which they denied the existence of God and mocked Christianity could also fall foul of the order.

‘Loss of dignity’

The provision in the Thanet PSPO which prohibits the use of language or behaviour gives the example: “This includes comments and behaviour, being cruel, pejorative, or of a demeaning nature that results in a loss of dignity or respect for women and girls.”

The Telegraph has previously exposed how local authorities have issued a PSPO to include walking a dog in the wrong place and forcing street performers to be “courteous ”.

PSPOs were first introduced by Parliament in 2014, but their original aim was to help councils manage issues such as prostitution, begging, loitering or drinking alcohol in specific areas.

Officials are empowered to impose a fixed-penalty fine of up to £100 , or a court can impose a £1,000 fine where a breach is identified.

‘The worst we have seen’

In a statement on the Thanet PSPO, the Free Speech Union said: “This is the worst one we have seen.

“This order would apply to the entire built-up area around the Thanet coastline, and is a draconian measure, which would restrict the freedom of expression of 130,000 residents plus the roughly four million tourists who visit Thanet each year.

“People within the area covered can now be fined or even face a criminal conviction for ‘causing a disturbance to others’ or being ‘pejorative’ in public, among other things.

“It effectively imposes a strict liability speech offence, with none of the safeguards which Parliament and the courts have deemed necessary when restricting people’s fundamental rights and liberties.”

A Thanet District Council spokesman said: “We know that making Thanet a safer and cleaner place to live in, work in or visit is a top priority for the residents of Thanet, and this new PSPO is a positive step towards this ambition.

“The combined PSPO can tackle an expanded range of negative behaviours. The first step will be an education and behaviour-change approach, but if this is not successful, enforcement can follow.

“The PSPO as currently drafted is still going through the council’s governance processes and will be subject to further review.”

Speech production is a complex process that traverses several representations, from the meaning of spoken words (semantic), through the movement of articulatory muscles (articulatory) and, finally, to the produced audio waveform (acoustic). In our study, we aimed to identify how these different representations of speech are spatially and temporally distributed throughout the depth of the brain. By considering multiple representations from the same exact data, we can limit potential con-founders to better understand the different aspects of speech production and acquire crucial complementary information for speech brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). Intracranial speech production data was collected of 15 participants, recorded from 1647 electrode contacts, while they overtly spoke 100 unique words. The electrodes were distributed across the entire brain, including sulci and subcortical areas. We found a bilateral spatial distribution for all three representations, although there was a stronger tuning in the left hemisphere with a more widespread and temporally dynamic distribution than in the right hemisphere. The articulatory and acoustic representations share a similar spatial distribution surrounding the Sylvian fissure, while the semantic representation appears to be widely distributed across the brain in a mostly distinct network. These results highlight the distributed nature of the speech production process and the potential of non-motor representations for speech BCIs.
