Independence Day 2024 Speech in 500 WordsRespected guests, principal, teachers and my dear friends, we are gathered here today to celebrate the 78th Independence Day of our nation. India achieved independence on August 15, 1947. It was an extremely proud moment when the national flag was unfurled at the Red Fort by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. This momentous occasion marked the end of the British rule in India. The British came to our nation, which was then known as, ‘Sone ki Chidiya’, for the purpose of trade. But they soon began taking advantage of the discords between people. The East India Company (EIC) took permission to carry out trade. The EIC gradually began expanding its operations and established factories in various parts of India. The British were successful in driving out French, Dutch and Portuguese traders out of the country. It was the Battle of Plassey (1757) which marked the successful establishment of the British rule in India. The British made Mir Jafar the puppet Nawab of Bengal in exchange for the territory of 24 parganas. The discriminatory policies of the British led to the Revolt of 1857. This event marked the first occasion of organised resistance against the EIC. The revolt was started by the sepoys of the EIC’s army and later spread to various cities. The revolt failed due to limited participation and lack of leadership. After the revolt, power was transferred from the EIC to the crown. The path to independence from the British saw various movements such as the Non-cooperation movement, Khilafat movement, Civil Disobedience movement and the Quit India movement. Behind India’s independence lies the rebellions and movements carried out by many freedom fighters. These people fought with unwavering determination to achieve freedom for all. Some of these brave freedom fighters were Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Bhagat Singh, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Lala Lajpat Rai, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Rani Laxmi Bai, Mangal Pandey and countless others. On the eve of India’s independence, Pandit Nehru gave the famous ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech. I would like to take this opportunity to quote some historic lines from the speech. Pandit Nehru said, ‘’Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.’’ Also Check: Independence Day 2024: Easy and Creative Rangoli Designs For Students As we celebrate Independence Day, let us remember our unsung heroes and their sacrifices. FACT FOCUS: A look at claims made by Trump at news conferenceTrump lashes out at Harris, recommits to a Sept. 10 debate at hourlong news conference Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump speaks to reporters during a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate Thursday, Aug. 8, 2024, in Palm Beach, Fla. (AP Photo, File) Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump talks about his ear as he speaks to reporters during a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate Thursday, Aug. 8, 2024, in Palm Beach, Fla. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon) In his first news conference since Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee for president, former President Donald Trump said he would debate her on Sept. 10 and pushed for two more debates. The Republican presidential nominee spoke for more than an hour, discussing a number of issues facing the country and then taking questions from reporters. He made a number of false and misleading claims. Many of them have been made before. Here’s a look at some of those claims. CROWD SIZESCLAIM: “The biggest crowd I’ve ever spoken — I’ve spoken to the biggest crowds. Nobody’s spoken to crowds bigger than me. If you look at Martin Luther King when he did his speech, his great speech, and you look at ours, same real estate, same everything, same number of people, if not we had more. And they said he had a million people, but I had 25,000 people.” THE FACTS: Trump was comparing the crowd at his speech in front of the White House on Jan. 6, 2021, to the crowd that attended Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech on Aug. 28, 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial. But far more people are estimated to have been at the latter than the former. Approximately 250,000 people attended the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, at which King gave his speech, according to the National Park Service . The Associated Press reported in 2021 that there were at least 10,000 people at Trump’s address. Moreover, Trump and King did not speak in the same location. King spoke from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial , which looks east toward the Washington Monument. Trump spoke at the Ellipse , a grassy area just south of the White House. CLAIM: “Nobody was killed on Jan. 6.” THE FACTS: That’s false. Five people died in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot and its immediate aftermath. Pro-Trump rioters breached the U.S. Capitol that day amid Congress’ effort to certify Democrat Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory. Among the deceased are Ashli Babbitt, a Trump supporter shot and killed by police, and Brian Sicknick, a police officer who died the day after battling the mob. Four additional officers who responded to the riot killed themselves in the following weeks and months. Babbitt, a 35-year-old Air Force veteran from San Diego, was shot and killed by a police officer as she climbed through a broken part of a Capitol door during the violent riot. Trump has often cited Babbitt’s death while lamenting the treatment of those who attended a rally outside the White House that day and then marched to the Capitol, many of whom fought with police. DEMOCRATIC NOMINATIONCLAIM: “The presidency was taken away from Joe Biden, and I’m no Biden fan, but I tell you what, from a constitutional standpoint, from any standpoint you look at, they took the presidency away.” THE FACTS: There is nothing in the Constitution that prevents the Democratic Party from making Vice President Kamala Harris its nominee. That process is determined by the Democratic National Committee. Harris officially claimed the nomination Monday following a five-day online voting process, receiving 4,563 delegate votes out of 4,615 cast, or about 99% of participating delegates. A total of 52 delegates in 18 states cast their votes for “present,” the only other option on the ballot. The vice president was the only candidate eligible to receive votes after no other candidate qualified by the party’s deadline following President Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the race on July 21. What to know about the 2024 Election
THE ECONOMYCLAIM: Suggesting things would be different if he had been in office rather than Biden: “You wouldn’t have had inflation. You wouldn’t have had any inflation because inflation was caused by their bad energy problems. Now they’ve gone back to the Trump thing because they need the votes. They’re drilling now because they had to go back because gasoline was going up to 7, 8, 9 dollars a barrel.” THE FACTS: There would have been at least some inflation if Trump had been reelected in 2020 because many of the factors causing inflation were outside a president’s control. Prices spiked in 2021 after cooped-up Americans ramped up their spending on goods such as exercise bikes and home office furniture, overwhelming disrupted supply chains. U.S. auto companies, for example, couldn’t get enough semiconductors and had to sharply reduce production, causing new and used car prices to shoot higher. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in March 2022 also sent gas and food prices soaring around the world, as Ukraine’s wheat exports were disrupted and many nations boycotted Russian oil and gas. Still, under Biden, U.S. oil production reached a worldwide record level earlier this year . Many economists, including some Democrats, say Biden’s $1.9 trillion financial support package, approved in March 2021, which provided a $1,400 stimulus check to most Americans, helped fuel inflation by ramping up demand. But it didn’t cause inflation all by itself. And Trump supported $2,000 stimulus checks in December 2020, rather than the $600 checks included in a package he signed into law in December 2020. Prices still spiked in countries with different policies than Biden’s, such as France , Germany and the U.K. , though mostly because of the sharp increase in energy costs stemming from Russia’s invasion. IMMIGRATIONCLAIM: “Twenty million people came over the border during the Biden-Harris administration — 20 million people — and it could be very much higher than that. Nobody really knows.” THE FACTS: Trump’s 20 million figure is unsubstantiated at best, and he didn’t provide sources. U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports 7.1 million arrests for illegal crossings from Mexico from January 2021 through June 2024. That’s arrests, not people. Under pandemic-era asylum restrictions, many people crossed more than once until they succeeded because there were no legal consequences for getting turned back to Mexico. So the number of people is lower than the number of arrests. In addition, CBP says it stopped migrants 1.1 million times at official land crossings with Mexico from January 2021 through June 2024, largely under an online appointment system to claim asylum called CBP One. U.S. authorities also admitted nearly 500,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela under presidential authority if they had financial sponsors and arrived at an airport. All told, that’s nearly 8.7 million encounters. Again, the number of people is lower due to multiple encounters for some. There are an unknown number of people who eluded capture, known as “got-aways” in Border Patrol parlance. The Border Patrol estimates how many but doesn’t publish that number. CLAIM: Vice President Kamala Harris “was the border czar 100% and all of a sudden for the last few weeks she’s not the border czar anymore.” THE FACTS: Harris was appointed to address “root causes” of migration in Central America. That migration manifests itself in illegal crossings to the U.S., but she was not assigned to the border. NEW YORK CASESCLAIM: “The New York cases are totally controlled out of the Department of Justice.” THE FACTS: Trump was referring to two cases brought against him in New York — one civil and the other criminal. Neither has anything to do with the U.S. Department of Justice. The civil case was initiated by a lawsuit from New York Attorney General Letitia James. In that case, Trump was ordered in February to pay a $454 million penalty for lying about his wealth for years as he built the real estate empire that vaulted him to stardom and the White House. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a state-level prosecutor, brought the criminal case . In May, a jury found Trump guilty on 34 felony counts in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through a hush money payment to a porn actor who said the two had sex. ___ Associated Press writers Melissa Goldin and Elliot Spagat and economics writer Christopher Rugaber contributed to this article. ___ Find AP Fact Checks here: https://apnews.com/APFactCheck . An earlier version of this story mixed up “latter” and “former” in the third paragraph. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech on Aug. 28, 1963, drew a far larger crowd than Donald Trump’s speech near the White House on Jan. 6, 2021. 1 Minute Speech on Save Electricity In EnglishA very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of ‘Save Electricity’. One must look beyond the fact that because our electronic gadgets and devices switch on at a moment’s notice, electricity is not available in abundance. Again, power backups (UPS) and generators are not a solution and would not provide endless electricity! Even if you do not care for this, save electricity for fiscal benefits! Electricity is costly! Ukraine's Olympic fencing champion has sold her sabre at auction to raise money for her country's war effort. Olga Kharlan's sabre sold for 10 million hryvnias (£188,075) during the auction for the Serhiy Prytula Charity Foundation. In a post on Facebook, the charity said: "Thanks to Olga for such a valuable artifact. "This sabre has already brought one victory, and its price will soon bring victories on the battlefield." Kharlan won Ukraine's first medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics after beating South Korea's Choi Sebin 15-14 for the women's sabre fencing bronze. At least two people have been killed and several have been injured after shelling hit a shopping centre in the Russian-controlled part of Donetsk, Russian state news agencies have reported. "Preliminarily there is information about at least two dead", the TASS news agency cited local operational services as saying, adding that the number of dead could rise. Local authorities were quoted as blaming Ukraine for the attack. In our 14.40 post, we told you the Kremlin-installed governor of the city, Denis Pushilin, had said the strikes sparked a fire of more than 10,000 square metres at the "Galaktika" shopping centre. He also said seven people had been injured. The Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine was illegally annexed by Russia in 2022, despite its forces only partially controlling it. In recent days, Russia has been pushing forward to the northwest of Donetsk, with Ukraine ordering the evacuation of the nearby city of Pokrovsk in response. Pokrovsk, which has been in Moscow's sights for several months, is one of Ukraine's main defensive strongholds and a key logistics hub in the region. Its capture would compromise Ukraine's defensive abilities and supply routes. The Russian defence ministry has released a video purporting to show new recruits training for an "assault detachment". In the clip, which has not been verified by Sky News, a group of people in army uniforms run from the back of a vehicle and fire weapons across a piece of dry land. In a post on Telegram, the ministry said the recruits were practising capturing enemy strongholds at a training ground. It added that servicemen who helped capture a village in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region were preparing the fighters for their units. Donetsk, which was illegally annexed by Russia in the early days of the war, is partially controlled by Moscow's forces. Once the troops are trained, they will join forces fighting in the south Donetsk area, the ministry said. A shopping centre in Russian-controlled Donetsk city has been destroyed in what Russia has branded as a Ukrainian attack. Earlier, Denis Pushilin, the Kremlin-installed governor of the city, said the apparent strikes sparked a fire of more than 10,000 square metres at the "Galaktika" shopping centre and injured seven people. Black smoke has been pouring from the building in the aftermath of the blaze. The eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk is in "real trouble" as Russian forces quickly close in, says our defence and security analyst Michael Clarke . While Russia is pulling forces from elsewhere, including Kaliningrad and the Crimea peninsula, in response to Ukraine's invasion of Kursk, troops are staying put in Donbas, where Russia has been making steady advances for months. Moscow is focusing its efforts on the Donetsk region and a major push towards the key Ukrainian logistics hub of Pokrovsk is ramping up. "That's where the Ukrainians are suffering. The Russians are still moving towards Pokrovsk," says Clarke. "Pokrovsk is in real danger now, and I think the Russians are determined to try to take it even before they take back territory [in Kursk] to prove that they're not going to be distracted from it." Clarke adds that the "risks are rising on both sides" with Russia and Ukraine both "putting more chips onto the table". Volunteers in Moscow are packing trucks with humanitarian aid intended for residents of Russia's Kursk region. Authorities say more than 120,000 residents in the border region have already had to leave their homes as a result of the Ukrainian invasion. Evacuations have also been taking place this week in the adjacent Belgorod region. At least seven people have been injured and a fire has erupted at a shopping centre after a series of Ukrainian strikes in the Russian-controlled city of Donetsk, a Russian official in the region has claimed. Denis Pushilin, the Kremlin-installed governor of the city, claimed the strikes sparked a fire of more than 10,000 square metres at the "Galaktika" shopping centre. Seven civilians, including a teenager, were wounded, he said, with no deaths reported. Sky News cannot independently verify the governor's claims. A video posted online shows smoke and flames rising from a shopping centre, purportedly in Donetsk. Alleged strikes come as Russia captures Donetsk territory Mr Pushilin's claim of Ukrainian attacks comes as Russian forces advance and capture more territory in Ukrainian-controlled areas of the Donetsk region. Earlier, the Russian defence ministry claimed its forces had taken control of the village of Serhiivka, while authorities ordered the rapid evacuation of the nearby city of Pokrovsk (see 11.16am post). Pokrovsk, which has been in Moscow's sights for several months, is one of Ukraine's main defensive strongholds and a key logistics hub in the Donetsk region. Its capture would compromise Ukraine's defensive abilities and supply routes. Our security and defence analyst Michael Clarke has provided some insight into what happened when 100 Russian soldiers in Kursk were captured in one go by the Ukrainians this week. The soldiers of Russia's 488th rifle regiment, who were mostly conscripts, "ran away" when they came up against a large unit of Ukrainian troops, Clarke says. As they fled, they were fired on by Chechen forces on the Russia side, who were "there to stop them running away," he explains. "They went the other way, went back towards the enemy and surrendered. So a whole company of young conscripts, all 18, 19-year-old boys, surrendered," adds Clarke. But he says that while "several hundred" prisoners have been taken by Ukraine during its invasion of Kursk, "it hasn't all gone the Ukrainians' way". "There's evidence that the some of the big Ukrainian units have been ambushed as well. So the fighting is very fragmentary - it's not coherent." You can watch Clarke's full analysis of today's developments here: Russian forces are being deployed in "greater force" to Kursk after initial "disarray and disorganisation", the UK Ministry of Defence has said. In its latest intelligence update, the MoD said Ukrainian troops had penetrated the Russian border region "to a depth ranging between 10-25km over a frontage of approximately 40km". It said Russia's established defensive lines and border forces were "not prepared" for last week's attacks. "After initial disarray and disorganisation, Russian forces have deployed in greater force to the region, including likely from elsewhere along the contact line," the MoD said. "They have also begun to construct additional defensive positions in an effort to prevent Ukrainian advances." The thinking behind Ukraine's shock invasion of Russian border regions over the last two weeks has been the subject of intense speculation since it began on 6 August. An aide to Volodymyr Zelenskyy has now offered a possible insight into Kyiv's plan, saying the incursion in Kursk was needed to convince Russia to start "fair" talks on a peace settlement. Presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said Kyiv needed to "inflict significant tactical defeats on Russia". "In the Kursk region, we can clearly see how the military tool is being used objectively to persuade [Russia] to enter a fair negotiation process," he wrote in a post to X. Mr Podolyak said Ukraine was "not interested" in occupying Russian territory and was waging an "exclusively defensive war". And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic. Let’s take a look… 100 Words Essay on Save EnergyImportance of saving energy. Saving energy is crucial for our planet. It helps in reducing pollution and conserving natural resources. Ways to Save EnergySwitching off lights when not in use, using energy-efficient appliances, and limiting the use of air conditioners can save energy. Benefits of Saving EnergyEnergy saving reduces electricity bills, decreases carbon emissions, and helps in preserving the environment for future generations. Everyone should make efforts to save energy. It’s not only beneficial for us but also for our planet. 250 Words Essay on Save EnergyIntroduction. Energy conservation is a pressing global issue, demanding immediate attention. As the world’s natural resources are rapidly depleting, the need to save energy becomes paramount. It is our responsibility to ensure the sustainability of our planet for future generations. The Importance of Saving EnergyEnergy is the lifeblood of modern civilization. It powers our homes, fuels our transportation, and drives our industries. However, the excessive and inefficient use of energy contributes to environmental degradation, climate change, and resource depletion. By saving energy, we can reduce our carbon footprint, slow down global warming, and preserve the earth’s natural resources. There are numerous ways to save energy, ranging from simple everyday habits to significant technological advancements. At an individual level, we can conserve energy by switching off lights and appliances when not in use, using energy-efficient devices, and choosing public transportation or carpooling. On a larger scale, industries can adopt energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy sources, and waste-to-energy conversion methods. Governments can promote energy conservation through policies, regulations, and public awareness campaigns. In conclusion, saving energy is not just a choice, but a necessity for our survival. It requires collective efforts from individuals, industries, and governments. By saving energy, we can ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for our planet and its inhabitants. 500 Words Essay on Save EnergyEnergy conservation is critical for several reasons. Firstly, a significant proportion of the world’s energy comes from non-renewable resources like coal, oil, and natural gas. These resources are finite and are depleting at an alarming rate due to overconsumption. Saving energy means reducing the rate of depletion of these resources, thus prolonging their availability. Secondly, the extraction and use of these non-renewable resources have severe environmental implications. They contribute to air and water pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change. By saving energy, we can mitigate these environmental impacts and contribute to the sustainability of our planet. One of the simplest ways is by improving energy efficiency. This involves using appliances that consume less energy for the same output, such as LED lights instead of incandescent bulbs, or energy-efficient refrigerators and air conditioners. Another method is by adopting renewable sources of energy, like solar and wind power. These sources are sustainable and have minimal environmental impact. By installing solar panels or wind turbines, we can generate our own electricity and reduce our dependence on non-renewable resources. Role of Technology and InnovationInnovations in renewable energy technology have made it more efficient and cost-effective, making it a viable alternative to traditional energy sources. Smart technologies like IoT and AI can help in monitoring and managing energy consumption in real-time, leading to significant energy savings. In conclusion, saving energy is a collective responsibility that requires the participation of all stakeholders, including individuals, communities, governments, and corporations. By adopting energy-efficient practices and technologies, and by shifting towards renewable sources of energy, we can ensure the sustainability of our energy resources and contribute to the well-being of our planet. The ‘Save Energy’ concept is not just about preserving resources for the future, but also about creating a sustainable and healthy environment for all. That’s it! I hope the essay helped you. Required fields are marked * Labour-run council to fine people £100 for swearing in streetFree speech campaigners say Thanet District Council is ‘restricting fundamental rights and liberties’ A Labour-run council has imposed a controversial new order which threatens on-the-spot fines of £100 for swearing in the street. Thanet District Council is facing a legal challenge after adopting a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) that bans behaviour that might “distress” people. It means any of its 130,000 residents, or visitors to the Kent coastal region , could be fined for “using language or behaviour causing or likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to any other person”. People could also face punishment if using a public space “otherwise in accordance with its intended use, or when directed not to do so by an authorised officer”. There is also a prohibition on congregating while being “abusive, alarming, threatening, insulting, intimidating, harassing, distressing or otherwise causing a disturbance to other members of the public”. Campaigners against the misuse of PSPOs say the Thanet order, which runs for one year, is one of the “worst” they have seen. They say it effectively criminalises free speech by creating a strict liability offence which depends on the judgment of local officials, with no legal safeguards. The Free Speech Union, which campaigns against restrictions to individual liberty , has written to the council ahead of launching a potential lawsuit unless it changes course. The campaign group argues that the Thanet PSPO could criminalise, for example, a legitimate political protest outside the council offices, or a religious preacher standing in the town centre giving a sermon on “Christian beliefs about sexuality”. They argue that an atheist activist giving a public speech in which they denied the existence of God and mocked Christianity could also fall foul of the order. ‘Loss of dignity’The provision in the Thanet PSPO which prohibits the use of language or behaviour gives the example: “This includes comments and behaviour, being cruel, pejorative, or of a demeaning nature that results in a loss of dignity or respect for women and girls.” The Telegraph has previously exposed how local authorities have issued a PSPO to include walking a dog in the wrong place and forcing street performers to be “courteous ”. PSPOs were first introduced by Parliament in 2014, but their original aim was to help councils manage issues such as prostitution, begging, loitering or drinking alcohol in specific areas. Officials are empowered to impose a fixed-penalty fine of up to £100 , or a court can impose a £1,000 fine where a breach is identified. ‘The worst we have seen’In a statement on the Thanet PSPO, the Free Speech Union said: “This is the worst one we have seen. “This order would apply to the entire built-up area around the Thanet coastline, and is a draconian measure, which would restrict the freedom of expression of 130,000 residents plus the roughly four million tourists who visit Thanet each year. “People within the area covered can now be fined or even face a criminal conviction for ‘causing a disturbance to others’ or being ‘pejorative’ in public, among other things. “It effectively imposes a strict liability speech offence, with none of the safeguards which Parliament and the courts have deemed necessary when restricting people’s fundamental rights and liberties.” A Thanet District Council spokesman said: “We know that making Thanet a safer and cleaner place to live in, work in or visit is a top priority for the residents of Thanet, and this new PSPO is a positive step towards this ambition. “The combined PSPO can tackle an expanded range of negative behaviours. The first step will be an education and behaviour-change approach, but if this is not successful, enforcement can follow. “The PSPO as currently drafted is still going through the council’s governance processes and will be subject to further review.”
Whole-brain dynamics of articulatory, acoustic and semantic speech representations
Speech production is a complex process that traverses several representations, from the meaning of spoken words (semantic), through the movement of articulatory muscles (articulatory) and, finally, to the produced audio waveform (acoustic). In our study, we aimed to identify how these different representations of speech are spatially and temporally distributed throughout the depth of the brain. By considering multiple representations from the same exact data, we can limit potential con-founders to better understand the different aspects of speech production and acquire crucial complementary information for speech brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). Intracranial speech production data was collected of 15 participants, recorded from 1647 electrode contacts, while they overtly spoke 100 unique words. The electrodes were distributed across the entire brain, including sulci and subcortical areas. We found a bilateral spatial distribution for all three representations, although there was a stronger tuning in the left hemisphere with a more widespread and temporally dynamic distribution than in the right hemisphere. The articulatory and acoustic representations share a similar spatial distribution surrounding the Sylvian fissure, while the semantic representation appears to be widely distributed across the brain in a mostly distinct network. These results highlight the distributed nature of the speech production process and the potential of non-motor representations for speech BCIs.
