The Nursing program provides a rich environment for postgraduate students with staff from a range of professional and disciplinary backgrounds including Stroke management, Wound management, Peri-operative care, Oncology, Obstetric & Gynecology, Neurology, Continence, Psychiatry, Cardiac Rehabilitation, and Neonatology & etc. that is relevant to the needs of healthcare professionals and nurses' career progression.

The master's by research degree equips students with a critical application of specialist knowledge and enables the development of advanced skills in carrying out sustainable and independent research.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by research degree offers students an opportunity to undertake a focused and critical consideration and to make informed judgements on complex issues of a particular topic with the aim of contributing to the development of knowledge in that field as well as embracing an innovative approach to undertaking and solving problems.

We aims to prepare scholars who will discover and extend scientific knowledge that advances the science and practice of nursing with the purposes to improve the quality of services and outcomes for patients and their families through studies concerned with individual clinical needs, how knowledge is translated into practice, service delivery, organization and the wider social and policy context of care.

The Doctor of Nursing is a 4 year coursework and dissertation based program offered via the distance and open learning mode. The program is for nurses to pursue their career pathway in clinical, education and research, while honing their critical and analytical thinking and decision making skills.

This terminal degree for nurses will prepare them for their future challenging roles in healthcare delivery. The program admits registered nurses who already have a Master of Nursing and they will be the future nurse leaders, academicians and researchers, contributing to the efforts of the nation’s high income, knowledge based population.

The assessment is both continuous evaluation and a final submission of dissertation including viva.   • What is a Doctor of Nursing (DN)? The DN is a one of two terminal doctoral degrees in the field of nursing. While its counterpart, the PhD, is more research-oriented, those who earn a DN have completed the highest level of nursing academic through course work -oriented designed. The program is for nurses to pursue their career pathway in clinical, education and research. This terminal degree for nurses will prepare them for their future challenging roles in healthcare delivery.
  • How do I qualify to join this DN program ? Requirement for joining this program is Master of Nursing , Master in Health Science or other health related qualification at level 7 Malaysian Qualification Framework. Other qualifications equivalent with Masters which is accepted by Senate.
  • What is the duration of the course? This is a 12-semesters course (4 years). A specific set of doctoral-level coursework required in all DN programs for two years , and two years of dissertation. This is a 4-year coursework and dissertation based program offered via the distance and open learning mode.
  • What are the requirements for International students to join this program? A minimum score of 500 in Test for English as a Foreign language (TOEFL). A minimum score of 5.0 in International English Language Testing System(IELTS)
  • What is total credit to complete the duration of the course? A total of 80 credits as approved by Malaysian Qualification Framework
  • What is the nomenclature of post graduate degree awarded after completion of DN? Doctoral degree according to the field of specialisation e.g DBA, DEd , DN
  • What is the impact of DN program to your career? Nurses with DN degree are in an important position to serve as leaders in the continuing articulation of the discipline, as well as contributors on multiple levels to the development of the knowledge base of nursing.

  • Is the program accredited? The program has been accredited and approved by MQA – The assessment of required accreditation of DN program no is MQA/FA 0839
  • What are the course subjects in DN program? DN curriculum coursework include subjects health care policy and politics , and evidence-based practice. Philosophy of science, nursing informatics , research methods and statistics and health economics , risk management and law and ethics in nursing. All DN students are required to fulfil 40 credits of course work and 40 credits of dissertation.The dissertation is meant to demonstrate students’ mastery of the theories and practices learned throughout the DN
  • What will be the career progression from entry into nursing and the DN? Multiple routes and mechanisms for career progression will be possible and ultimately decided by each educational institution. The proposed model allows for progression from the BS or MS or to the DN.
  • How many institutions currently offer the DN through online ? Currently Open University Malaysia is the only university in Malaysia offering the course via online.
  • How will the DN differ from the PhD in terms of curriculum content, research competencies, outcomes and roles occupied? The DN focuses on providing leadership for evidence-based practice. This requires competence in translating research in practice, evaluating evidence, applying research in decision-making, and implementing viable clinical innovations to change practice. Considerable emphasis is placed on a population perspective, how to obtain assessment data on populations or cohorts, how to use data to make programmatic decisions, and program evaluation.

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing programme introduces the novel niche in nursing research activities that will involve various nursing fields. This programme would facilitate the enrolment of students for Master Degree holders who intend to pursue research at a higher degree level.  

Programme Description

This research-focused doctoral programme will promote the development of a cognitive style that emphasizes abstract thinking and critical analysis of the research findings for building knowledge that advances culturally competent nursing and nursing education. The programme aims to inculcate the Islamic knowledge and value in nursing art and science for the nature and future of humankind. The fundamental concern is to promote human wellbeing at an individual, local and global level within a sustainable environment. As such, this program is different from other interdisciplinary educational initiatives in that its curriculum is purposely designed rather than simply an amalgamation of existing disciplines.  

Duration of the study: 3 years full time or 4 years part-time programme (normal progression)

Entry Requirements

·     A relevant Master’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 or equivalent from IIUM or any other accredited institution of higher learning. 

·  Applications from candidates with other certificates that are recognized as equivalent to a Master’s Degree in Nursing or relevant qualifications that are recognized by the Senate of the University. 

·       Candidates must demonstrate a good command of the English Language. Our English language requirement is: 

     o   TOEFL 500; or 

     o   IELTS 5; or  

     o   English Placement Test 5 (administered by the University)

The Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing  at KPJ Healthcare University is a programme to engage in the systematic generation of evidence (theoretical and empirical associated with researchable issues in nursing. area of interest and with the current need for evidence based practice ( EBP)  for the provision of high quality health care , initiating change and improving nursing practices.   This is a research-based program where students conduct research under the guidance of a supervisor and submit the thesis at the end of the program

  • As Nurse faculty members she /he is responsible for creating, implementing and evaluating program curricula and mentoring nursing students
  • Teaching responsibilities they are expected to conduct research, disseminate this research in scholar journals and research  

Director of nursing research

  • A nurse researcher who serves as administrator of the nursing research department of health care facility .
  • Coordinator of the facility’s nursing research program
  • Supervise other nursing research employees. He or she is responsible for overseeing all nursing research projects conducted within the facility.
  • Responsible for designing and implementation of desired research study.

Director of clinical services

  • As clinical administrator he/she is responsible in overseeing daily operation of patient care department in a health care facility.
  • A liaison between upper management and department managers. Although the director is not involved in direct patient care, he or she is aware of the work flows in each department that promote optimal patient care.

  • Evaluation of research proposal. Candidates/ students are required to present a research proposal for evaluation purposes within the duration specified by the University, failing which students may be given unsatisfactory (US) status.
  • Semester evaluation by the supervisor (Progress report)
  • Thesis examination by the internal and external examiner
  • Oral defense of thesis to a Panel for Viva Examiners

Because this is a research-based, multidisciplinary programme, it will broaden the horizon for students in particular and the nursing profession in general, creating previously-unavailable opportunities in the field of advanced healthcare and interdisciplinary collaboration, and launching successful careers for individuals who will go on to change the landscape of nursing, pioneer the way to avant garde techniques, facilitate change, assume leadership roles in nursing, and create better healthcare for individuals, communities and the world at large. By the time they graduate, MAHSA University’s Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing students will have earned the capacity to create new knowledge in the understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, nursing, and numerous other branches of medicine and healthcare, and to exhibit expertise in various areas of nursing, making advanced healthcare accessible to all within their spheres.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Master degree in Nursing / equivalent from the related field with minimum CGPA of 3.00
  • Master degree in Nursing / equivalent from the related field with CGPA above 2.00 but below 3.00/equivalent and with at least 3 years work experience in a related field
  • Registered with Nursing Board of Malaysia/ country of origin
  • Possess current Annual Practicing Certificate/ Temporary Practicing Certificate for International candidates pursuing a clinical-based programme
  • Able to converse in Bahasa Melayu/Malay Language

Health Requirements

  • All candidates must be certified medically fit by a registered medical practitioner within one month from the commencement of the nursing programme
  • Students must not have any physical disabilities or impaired senses that hinder nursing dexterity
  • Students with medical conditions such as HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, epilepsy, mental health disorders and color blindness cannot be admitted into the programme.
  • Pregnancy is not allowed throughout the course

What are the postgraduate programmes in Health Professions Education offered at IMU?

There are five programmes offered in Postgraduate Programmes in Health Professions Education:

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Health Professions Education (PGCHPE)
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Health Professions Education (ODL) (PGCHPEO)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Health Professions Education (PGDHPE)
  • Master in Health Professions Education (MHPE)

How is this programme conducted?

PhD in Health Professions Education is research-based and the degree will be awarded by the IMU on the successful completion of a dissertation. The examination is by assessment of the dissertation, the research on which it is based and a viva voce.

What is the programme content?

The programme content can be referred to the programme structure.

What is the duration of each programme on full-time basis?

  • Minimum of 3 years (6 semesters)
  • Maximum of 5 years (10 semesters)

What is the duration of each programme on part-time basis?

  • Minimum of 4 years (8 semesters)
  • Maximum of 6 years (12 semesters)

How are supervisors selected?

The selection of supervisor(s) will depend very much on the research area and be based on mutual agreement between both parties. The principal supervisor must be engaged within IMU whereas a co-supervisor can be from any established institution. All supervisors are subject to the credentialling guidelines of IMU.

What are the admission procedures.

  • Applications for admission are accepted continuously throughout the year.
  • An interview with the faculty is required and is part of the evaluation process.
  • The completed application and all supporting materials (transcripts, research proposal) must be on file before the application can be processed and evaluated.
  • Successful applicants are notified of their acceptance by letter.

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) is University of Malaya’s premier research training degree. Career Opportunity

Course structure.

This Ph.D programme is purely based on individual supervised research. At the end of the candidate's study, a thesis must be submitted and upon successful defense of the paper, the candidate will be granted Ph.D status. All research proposals must be approved and supervised by the Faculty.

Ph.D candidates’ theses must not exceed 100,000 words. They are required to complete their studies within 12 semesters.

Language Requirement

A non-Malaysian applicant whose degree is from a university or institution of higher learning where the medium of instruction for that degree is not the English language and where the applicant wishes to follow a programme and/or write his tesis in the English language shall be required:

  • To obtain a score of 600 for a paper-based total (PBT); a score of 250 for a computer-based total (CBT) or a score of 100 for an internet-based total (IBT) for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
  • To obtain a band of 6 for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Entry Requirement

  • Master’s Degree by Research;
  • Clinical Master’s Degree;
  • Master’s Degree by Coursework or Mixed Mode with a CGPA of not less than 3.7;
  • Master’s Degree by Coursework or Mixed Mode with a CGPA of 2.00 to AND qualification of a Bachelor's degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00;
  • Master’s Degree by Coursework or Mixed Mode with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 to 3.69 and APEL (A) qualification or other qualification approved by the Senate; or
  • has relevant work experience;
  • has produced publications in the relevant fields;
  • is a scholarship recipient;
  • is a graduate of the University of Malaya;
  • is a government agency staff;
  • Passed the interview conducted by the Faculty; or
  • Passed the Faculty’s special assessment.
  • possesses related working experience not less than five (5) years;
  • published at least one (1) publication in a refereed journal in the related field;
  • Passed the interview conducted by the Faculty; or (iv) Passed the Faculty’s special assessment.
