Spelling Homework Ideas

Use these spelling homework ideas to add variety to your kids' spelling routine. Regardless of their age, most students need to practice, practice, practice their new spelling words, and that can quickly become boring, boring, boring!

To keep your kids engaged in the process, try some of these ideas this week. Don't miss the first half of our list.

21. Write a brand-new tall tale that uses 10 of your spelling words.

24. Type 5 of your words into a word processing program. Use its dictionary to find and copy definitions.

26. Write the words on a piece of graph paper so that every word intersects with another word, if possible.

27. Try to form new words by changing just one letter in each spelling word. Example: load - loaf

29. Write a story about your favorite holiday that uses at least 6 spelling words.

31. Use building blocks, toys or other items to form your spelling words.

32. Rewrite all your spelling words using a code. Include the code on the page. Ask a family member to solve.

35. Write 5 sentences so that each one contains a spelling word and a synonym or antonym for the spelling word.

37. Think of a shape that relates to each spelling word. Then try to write the word in that shape.

38. Write a new song to an old tune ( Jingle Bells, Mary Had a Little Lamb, etc.) that uses several of your spelling words.

39.  Write each word 6 times, using a different style of letters each time. (Use cursive letters, block letters, curvy letters, etc.)

40. Write the title of a fictional book for each spelling word.

One of my students’ favorite spelling activities. They write each spelling word with a white crayon and then color over the words with a marker. The spelling words MAGICALLY appear on the paper.

Spelling Activity 3. Alphabetical Order?

This activity is pretty self-explanatory. Students will organize their spelling words into alphabetical order and write them in that sequence.

4 . Rainbow Spelling?

Write the spelling words along the rainbow in different colors to practice.

5 . Write a Sentence✏️

Use each of your spelling words in a sentence. This is a great way to practice spelling words, writing, and additional vocabulary.

Roll a die to see if you will be writing your spelling words in crayon, with squiggles, in multiple colors, or bubble letters. Which number did you roll the most?

8. Word Illustrations?

Choose four of your spelling words and draw an illustration for them. To add an extension to this activity, ask your students to write a sentence to go with their illustration.

Spelling Activity 9 . Word Boxes?

Is the letter tall or short? Does it stretch above the middle line or fall below? Students use the boxes to determine which word will fit as they practice spelling and writing them.

10. Trace Words?

Students can choose to trace their spelling words in pencil, crayon, or marker. Sometimes they just enjoy using a different tool to write with.

11. Emoji Spelling?

Your students love using emojis, why not put those to educational use?! LOL Students will spell the words by using the emoji code.

spelling of home assignment

Spelling Activity 12. Pattern Block Spelling?

Give your students some fun hands-on spelling work with this pattern block activity. This page is great for an individual or small group center, or if you need some quiet time to catch up on assessments or small group RTI.

13. Vowels and Consonants

We all have those blue and red colored alphabet letters in our closets somewhere. Well, it is time to pull them out to spell words with. After they build the letter, students will color the consonants in blue and the vowels in red.

14. Scrabble Spelling

Combine math and word work in this activity. Students will spell each word, writing the numbers on the tiles down. Then add the numbers together to come up with each word “sum”.

Spelling Activity 15. Spin It, Spell It?

Each student will create a spinner with a paperclip and pencil. Spin the spinner and see which number it lands on. Write the word that matches the corresponding number. Was there a word that you wrote more often than all of the rest?

spelling of home assignment

16. Spelling Maze

Can you find your way out of the maze? As they come to a word, have them read it, spell it, and then check it off the word list at the bottom. You can have them complete this activity with a partner as they both try to navigate through the maze. Can they guess the other student’s word after it has been spelled?

17. Spelling Spiral?

Round and round the spiral goes, how many spelling words you can fit, nobody knows…

Spelling Activity 18. Word Syllables??

Students practice separating their spelling words into syllables. Count on fingers, clap hands, or stomp feet to see how many syllables are in each word. Then circle the corresponding number.

19. Silly Writing?

Your students will have so much fun practicing their spelling words while writing upside down, or with their eyes closed.

20. Pyramid Spelling

Build your spelling words pyramid style. Start with one letter at the top and add another letter with each line as you move your way down the pyramid.

Spelling Activity 21. Spelling Rhymes

Can your students think of a word that rhymes with each of their spelling words? How many rhyming words can they come up with?

spelling of home assignment

Students match the color word to the spelling word in order to write the correct word on the line under the crayon. Added bonus: students learn to identify color words!

spelling of home assignment

23. Word Search

For your higher-level kiddos, this word search is GREAT! They write their words either across, down, or as a challenge, diagonal on the grid. Then place random letters among the grid. Share with a partner to see if they can find all of your “hidden” words.

Spelling Activity 24. Word Art

For your more creative students, color in the fancy letters and decorate around each of the spelling words. Plus, who doesn’t love to color?! ❤️

spelling of home assignment

spelling of home assignment

28. Synonyms and Antonyms

For a more challenging activity, connect spelling practice with vocabulary skills by finding a synonym and antonym for each spelling word.

29. Sign Language Spelling

This will definitely be a class favorite! Your students get to learn sign language while practicing their spelling words. And it is a socially distant partner activity, as they can sign a word to a partner and see if the partner can write down the word signed.

spelling of home assignment

Spelling Activity 30. How Many Sounds

Students practice sound segmentation with this activity. Sound out your spelling words and circle how many sounds those words have.

31.  Shape Spelling ??

Your students can combine math and spelling skills by writing their spelling words along the inside of each shape on the page.

spelling of home assignment

32. Parts of Speech Spelling

Give your spelling practice some grammar skills as well. Students will sort each of their spelling words into the different parts of speech. As an extension, can they create a Madlib with their spelling words?

Spelling Activity 33.  Spelling with Both Hands ?

Are you right or left-handed? Well, with this activity, you get to practice your spelling words writing with each hand. In the end, I bet that your non-dominant handwriting will start to look pretty nice. ?

34.  Silly Sentences ?

Students try to write as many of their spelling words in a sentence as they can. Once the sentence is written, they go back and underline their spelling words and count how many they used. Who can use the most in one sentence?

35. Spelling Cake ?

Oh, how I wish it was real cake… LOL. Students will write their spelling words on each layer of the cake, changing the size of the words as they move up the tiers.

spelling of home assignment

Spelling Activity 36. Tablet Spelling ?

spelling of home assignment

How many letters are in each spelling word? Students can graph their words based on the number of letters in each one. Which number has the most, the least, or are there any ties?

Spelling Activity 39. Fancy Spelling

This activity will allow your students to use their creativity. They can spell their words using fancy lettering. Will they write in cursive, dotted lines, or some invented script?

40. Garden Spelling ?

Find the open spaces in the image and write your spelling words. How many can you fit within the picture? Once done, they can color the rest of the picture.

41. Flower Spelling

Students write their spelling words along the “petals” of each flower, making sure that they match in color and are spelled correctly.

Spelling Activity 42. Scribble Spelling

Write the spelling words in each of the spaces in the picture in different colors. Can you write the words without the same color being used in spaces that touch?

43. Bubble Spelling

Did you ever write words in bubble letters?! It used to be a big thing when I was in school (now I’m really dating myself… LOL). Your students can practice writing all of their spelling words in bubble letters.

spelling of home assignment

44. Bubble Spelling Alternative

Just like the activity above, students will write their spelling words in bubble letters.

spelling of home assignment

Spelling Activity 50. Spelling Tic-Tac-Toe

Students will play tic-tac-toe by trying to write three of their spelling words in a row before their partner can do it. Make a bunch of copies of this worksheet and place them in a center. It is a “fun” way for students to practice their spelling words without really knowing it.

spelling of home assignment

52. Spelling Riddles

This is another activity for your higher students. They will create a riddle about one of their spelling words and write it down. Once they have written all of their riddles, they will trade their paper with a partner and see if their buddy can figure out what words they were describing.

53. Spelling Battleship

Just like the famous board game, students will each have two papers. There grid to write their words on and the other to record their hits on their partner’s grid. Instead of laying down ships, they will write their words vertically or horizontally on the grid. Once all of the words have been written, it is time to play. Guess the letter/number combination to see if you get a ‘hit’ or a ‘miss’.

Activity 54. Spelling Squares

Who has played this game in the fun children’s menu magazine or placement that you sometimes get?! Students will write play against a partner, trying to build squares. Once they have boxed in a square, they will need to write a spelling word inside. Such fun!!!

spelling of home assignment

55. Doughy Spelling

Playdough meets spelling words in this fine motor building activity. Students will spell their words by rolling out and shaping playdough for each word. This is one activity your students will quietly sit and do for a LONG time!

56. Build Your Words

LEGO your way to completing your spelling words. Using the famous bricks, build each of your spelling words.

Spelling Activity 57.  Hopscotch Spelling

Use this miniature mat to practice spelling words. Students will write their spelling words in the spaces. Then, using a small game piece, such as a button, they carefully toss it onto the paper. Wherever it lands, you will ‘hop’ to and read the word under the button. You can also recreate this activity outside by drawing the words and hopscotch in chalk.

58. Spy Spelling

Use the spy code at the top of the paper to spell each word. Students will write the numbers that correspond to the letters under each word. Make sure to add dashes between the numbers.

59. Words Inside Spelling

Using the letters inside each flower, how many “new” words can you make? Write each new word onto a petal.

Spelling Activity 60. Write the Room Spelling

Get your students up and moving with this spelling center activity. Each word will be printed on the card that corresponds to a picture. Students will carefully walk around the room, locating the different cards you have placed around the room. When they find a card, they need to write down that word next to the corresponding image.

35 Fun, Hands-On Spelling Activities to Use With Any Word List

Inside: 35 fun, hands-on spelling activities that get kids actively engaged with their spelling words – thinking, making, creating! Includes a printable version for at home learning.

There’s no doubting that some children (if not all!) learn best when they are actively engaged with thinking, making, creating – DOING. Which is why it can be advantageous to add an active, hands-on element to subjects that more typically rely on rote learning style activities – like spelling.

The 35 hands-on spelling activities included on this list are much more fun and engaging than simply writing out spelling words over and over again (my kids both strongly disliked the ‘Look, Cover, Write, Check’ approach to spelling – and I honestly didn’t see much learning happening with it).

These ideas can be useful as activities for literacy rotations or as homework activities, working particularly well with children in the early elementary/primary grades. Plus, at the bottom of this post you’ll find a handy printable version that can be sent home with families to use for at home learning.

Although extremely valuable, word work can get redundant if students are repeating the same activity week after week. Ideally, a mix of activities will increase engagement and students will start to look forward to working with new words. In terms of implementation, the weekly vocabulary and spelling practice ideas listed below can take many forms. The objective remains the same whether students are completing their work on paper or with a computer.

Give students an opportunity to play with and manipulate letters to form new words using the wordsmith activity.  Students try to spell as many words as they can using the letters in a specific word. For example, if your vocabulary words are related to a chapter on the Civil War, students would try to spell as many words as possible using the letters in “Civil War”.  Adding a time limit isn’t necessary, but it adds a fun twist!

Ultimately, manipulating the letters to form new words will strengthen decoding skills, improving reading fluency and comprehension.

spelling of home assignment

The storytime activity requires students to correctly use their vocabulary or spelling words in a fictional narrative.  Integrating the news words into a cohesive story is effective because it provides students with a strong frame of reference for understanding and integration.   Basically, it forces students to apply their knowledge of the word’s meaning rather than simply recall or memorize a definition.  The average student learns 3,000 words per year, but only 10% are acquired through direct instruction. The rest are learned contextually.  Learning to utilize context clues when determining word meaning is an essential aspect of the vocabulary development process.

Word Scramble

Word scramble activities reinforce phonemic awareness, pattern recognition, and spelling skills.  Word scrambles and word searches provide similar benefits and can be used interchangeably. As students develop the ability to look for consonant clusters and vowel combinations, they will become more adept at unscrambling words.

The A to Z activity forces students to make connections between words.  First, a focus word is introduced. It can be one of the new spelling/vocabulary words students are learning, or it can be an overarching thematic word.  Next, students think of words (one for each letter of the alphabet) related to the focus word, earning points for each word added. When students have completed as many letters as possible, points are totaled to get a final score.  Time constraints can be added to make the A to Z activity more challenging.

Definition and Sentences

Requiring students to record definitions and sentences for each of their vocabulary or spelling words will help them build a strong foundation for future learning.  I like to think of it as a jumping off point. The initial exposure will be extremely helpful when it comes time to access and apply the new words.

Developing a word grid will provide students with a point of reference when working with the new words in future assignments.  To set up your grid, add each new word in the far left column and individual word activities in the other columns. The number of columns will depend on the number activities (definition, part of speech, synonym(s), antonym(s), sentence, and/or a picture).

The pictionary activity requires students to create a visual dictionary. Connecting a picture to each word will reinforce learning and support recognition.  When students create their own visual representations, they are developing an association with the word that they will be able to draw from when needed.

Word of the Week

Dive deep with a weekly word study.  Focusing on a different part of the word each day will give students an in-depth glimpse into the meaning and use of each word. Ideas for daily activities are similar to the word grid ideas described above including definition, part of speech, synonym(s), antonym(s), sentence, and/or a picture.

Dunbar Elementary, Atlanta GA

Spelling Shed Curriculum Overview

Spelling Shed provides a series of word lists for grades K-5 that have been developed by applying the Science of Reading research and follow a systematic progression. The progression covers a range of phonics skills, high-frequency words, and morphological awareness, typically addressed in each grade level. Our curriculum aligns with current ELA standards for grade K-5.

Every grade has core foundational skills incorporated into the list progression, at varying degrees of difficulty, depending on the grade level.

  • K-2 word lists are based mostly on phoneme-grapheme correspondences (PGCs), beginning with the most common patterns to more advanced ones. The majority of the words selected for each list contain only the PGCs that have been previously reviewed, to avoid cognitive overload, help ensure focus, and attain mastery of the skill at hand.
  • In grades 3-5 as the shift from phonics to morphology becomes increasingly important, the word lists begin to focus more on providing opportunities to spell through meaning, with less emphasis on PGCs.
  • Grades K-3 word lists integrate grade-level appropriate, decodable and partially decodable Dolch HFWs and Fry’s Instant 300 HFWs.

For districts that already have word lists or follow a word study curriculum, teachers can easily import those spelling word lists to use with Spelling Shed. We also feature ready made lists of popular reading series including HMH Journeys® and McGraw-Hill Reading Wonders®. We also provide traditional high-frequency word lists like Dolch and Fry.

Spelling Games

In order for words to move into long term memory students need an opportunity to play with their words. Spelling Shed has designed several engaging games that will help students do just that. Our main spelling game has four different levels to provide students with the right amount of support. Missing Word, another popular game asks students to identify the correct spelling of the specific word.

Fun Educational Spelling Games

Your students are going to love playing spelling games online! We make it easy for all of your students to learn. Once you create a list and check out the practice section and spelling games for your students, they can play up to ten games, depending on your chosen plan. Each game has a purpose.

Word Search is a fun way for students to focus on recognizing their spelling words. Our Fill-in-the-Blank requires your student to fill in the missing letters. Spelling Soup gives your student time to recognize the correctly spelled word. Word Scramble lets your student focus on putting the letters in the correct order. King Cactus is a hangman spelling game that allows your student to save the cactus when your student selects the correct letters. Our Spelling Memory Game is always a favorite because students have fun finding the right word matches. Herman's Mouse Maze requires your student to spell each word correctly to eat the cheese to continue to the end of the maze. Word Chopper is perfect for students who want to work on whittling away at their spelling lists. If students spell a word wrong, the word goes back into the queue to spell again. Lastly, Bink Bonk lets your student play their way through the spelling game by having to spell each word right to win.

Online Spelling Practice

Students can practice spelling online easily by logging in from home, school, or anywhere with an internet connection. The program works on mobile devices such as phones and tablets like iPads. Students log in with their user id and password and click on the practice in the menu. They will see the lists that their teacher has checked out for them. Students can show or hide the spelling word during the practice session. If the student does not type in the correct spelling after three attempts, the program will show the correct spelling to copy. Seeing the word helps the student become more familiar with each spelling word more quickly. Assign spelling practice as homework and track the number of times each student practices in teacher reports. Our practice section is a fantastic way to improve students' spelling skills.

Online Spelling Tests

Spelling Stars online spelling tests are built for easy use by teachers and students. A teacher creates a test by logging into their account. Once the test is ready, the teacher will check that test out for students to see. If the test is not "assigned," students will not be able to see the test. Assigning tests at a particular time helps ensure that students take tests at the approved time. In addition to that, teachers can schedule tests for a future time and day. Once students complete the test, it is automatically graded, and reports are stored in the system by list and student name for teachers. Students also have access to their reports anytime. Teachers are also able to create differentiated spelling tests for their students. Teachers can go into Student List Levels under the Students menu and decide if a student will get basic, challenge, or super challenge words or a combination of those three types. Please watch our video on How to Make Spelling Lists for detailed information.

Tori Spelling Details Living in 56,000 Square Foot Childhood Home She Dubs ‘The Manor’

Tori Spelling Details Living in 56 000 Square Foot House The Manor 290

Tori Spelling dished on what it was like to live in the iconic Spelling family home dubbed “The Manor.”

“When I was 12, my parents purchased property that became ‘The Manor,’ and it was Bing Crosby ’s house,” Spelling, 51, said on the Monday, August 19, episode of her “MisSpelling” podcast. “Which little known fact my mom loved Bing Crosby, [she was] a huge fan, so that was a fun connection — and then she tore all that s–t down.”

Tori shared that her parents, Aaron and Candy Spelling , brought her and her siblings to tour the estate before they purchased it. For Tori, the home reminded her of a Nancy Drew novel, and she wanted to live in the house.

“There were hidden passageways and an underground library that you pushed on something and it went into these secret rooms,” she recalled. “It was full on to the point where I was like, ‘Oh my god this is my life. Mom, you have to keep it.’”

Tori’s parents ultimately bought the property, which was located on the same street as their original Los Angeles home. However, they decided to bulldoze down everything to create their own home, which took them “six years” to build, according to the actress. Tori shared she officially moved into the home when she was 17.

Once the house was completed, it ended up being a 56,000 square foot home, which included two driveways, two entrances and around “125” rooms, Tori estimated. There was also a “massive” kitchen with a breakfast room attached, dining room, pool, jacuzzi and pool house with a full kitchen and bathroom. The Spelling family had around-the-clock security and staff living with them in their own wing on the second floor.

While the home had a winding and sprawling driveway, Tori shared that her family never used the main entrance and opted for the side door with a side driveway.

Tori Spelling Details Living in 56 000 Square Foot House The Manor 289

One major point of the Spelling’s home was the projection room, which served as the family’s living room. The room had leveled seating with couches for the family to invite their friends over to watch movies on a screen that was set behind a collection of Monet and Renoir paintings that would move down to show the screen.

The home also had an underground level of the estate, which featured all of the extra special rooms.

“When you enter the house, on the ground level there’s everything that you would think of on a ground level,” Tori explained. “And there was an elevator … you would take the elevator [or] stairs [up] for the bedrooms and you would take the elevator downstairs almost like going to the basement level [and] that’s where all these unique rooms you hear about.”

The lower level had a two-lane bowling alley, a “tiny” gym, an arcade, a bar, a pool table room, a doll museum and more. The doll museum featured Candy’s collection of figurines and toys, which also included custom-made dolls of the mother-daughter duo. However, Tori and her brother used the room to play pranks on their friends.

“They would walk into the doll museum and I would be like adjusting the lights to dim them perfectly and they’d be like, ‘This is creepy.’ Everyone was scared [and] terrified,” she said. “My brother and I would mess with them, one of us would take you on a tour and someone [would] pop through the door around the back and [pop out].”

Candy ultimately sold the home after Aaron died in 2006 at age 83. However, Tori didn’t have a strong sentimental attachment to the property since she only lived there for a “year or two” before her career took off with Beverly Hills, 90210 .

“I can honestly say I have no emotional attachment to the house and I never did,” she said. “I have good memories there but my best memories with my parents were created at the other house. The house wasn’t my dad’s jam. He liked small and cozy, and my mom loves to decorate.”
