Speech Language Pathology Scholarship Guide

scholarships for speech language pathology graduate students

SLP Scholarship Guide

Scholarship criteria – you’ll need to be deserving and a good investment, common sources for slp scholarships, speech pathology scholarships by state, non-state-based speech-language pathology scholarships.

If there is one thing every speech-language pathologist (SLP) has in common, it’s that they have spent an awful lot of time in school to get where they are. Professional licensing and certification requires a post-bachelor’s degree which means, at a minimum, you’re looking at four years of college as an undergrad followed by another two years or so earning at least a master’s degree. With clinical practicum work thrown in, it can easily take even longer.

That much education isn’t cheap. A master’s degree in SLP or CSD (Communication Sciences and Disorders) can cost anywhere between $23,000 and $75,000 at a public university and as much as $90,000 at a private institution. That’s before you even start looking at textbooks or little things like food and a place to sleep.

Searching for online degree programs can help with some of that, but no matter what, you’re going to be on the hook for tuition and fees to the tune of tens of thousands.

  • Emerson College - Master's in Speech-Language Pathology online - Prepare to become an SLP in as few as 20 months. No GRE required. Scholarships available.
  • Arizona State University - Online - Online Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Science - Designed to prepare graduates to work in behavioral health settings or transition to graduate programs in speech-language pathology and audiology.
  • NYU Steinhardt - NYU Steinhardt's Master of Science in Communicative Sciences and Disorders online - ASHA-accredited. Bachelor's degree required. Graduate prepared to pursue licensure.
  • Calvin University - Calvin University's Online Speech and Hearing Foundations Certificate - Helps You Gain a Strong Foundation for Your Speech-Language Pathology Career.

Fortunately, you have a lot of excellent choices when it comes to scholarship opportunities in SLP. The field is underpinned by the strength of the professional organizations supporting it at both national and state levels, and the many different universities that offer SLP programs.

Ethnicity and Socioeconomic Status…

Something you’re going to run into almost immediately is the stringent eligibility criteria for each scholarship. Not all scholarships are open to all applicants. Many, and perhaps even most, are fairly narrowly focused on a specific demographic or require other qualifications that you will have to meet before you can even apply. Everything from ethnicity or racial status to family background or economic status to state residency can come into play for these kinds of scholarships.

Academic Performance is Key…

You should also expect that any organization granting a scholarship is going to hold you to a pretty high standard. Since you’ll be wearing their logo emblazoned across a t-shirt for the rest of your college career, you’ll be expected to be a good representative. This means meeting certain standards for your grade-point average, either historically or as part of the current program you are enrolled in.

Presentation isn’t Everything, but it’s Important…

You will often have to provide written references from teachers or other people who know you. You might have to provide a resume or CV. Many scholarships require an essay as part of the application process, allowing you to discuss your reasons for getting into the field and explaining why you are a good investment.

A good old fashion Google search is a great resource for scholarship information but you’ll quickly find yourself overwhelmed with options, and as smart as Google may be, it still struggles to filter results so you’re just presented with scholarships specific to SLP that you’re actually eligible for.

You may be better off narrowing down your search initially by focusing on specific organizations or institutions that are likely to offer SLP scholarships… Sound tedious? Skip that and just take a look at the comprehensive list we put together below.

Don’t hesitate to bundle together multiple scholarships. Although the grants for SLP degrees are often higher than they are in many other fields, it’s not likely you’ll find a full-ride from a single source. You’re likely going to have to cobble together a number of scholarships each year if you want to cover a substantial portion of your tuition and books.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation Scholarships

ASHFoundation should be your first stop on the SLP scholarship hunt. Founded in 1946 to support the advancement of knowledge in the field of communication studies, one of the primary ways the foundation has chosen to fulfill that mission is by funding research grants and scholarships. Since its inception, ASHFoundation has supported more than 2,000 doctoral and post-doctoral students with more than $8 million in awards. You could be one of them!

The Foundation has two separate general scholarship programs:

  • New Century Scholars Doctoral Scholarship for doctoral candidates – For students enrolled in, or accepted to, a PhD or equivalent program in CSD. Up to 15 awards of $10,000 each are available.
  • Graduate Student Scholarship – For students who are undergraduate seniors accepted to master’s programs, or currently pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees. Up to 15 awards of $5,000 each are available.

Applications for each of these are available on the Foundation grants page.

There are also four specially endowed scholarships that you may qualify for. Each have the same terms as the Graduate Student Scholarship, but are awarded to candidates in specific categories:

  • Students with a Disability Scholarship – For students with a disability.
  • Minority Student Scholarship – For students who are U.S. citizens and members of a racial or ethnic minority group.
  • International Student Scholarship – For international students (non-U.S. citizens) studying SLP in the United States.
  • NSSLHA Scholarship – For undergraduate senior students with active National Student Speech Language Hearing Association Memberships.

Healthcare Organization Scholarships

Because SLP is a subset of the healthcare field, you will find a lot of scholarship opportunities from organizations that encourage education in medical and therapy professions.

You do have to be careful to ensure that SLP is considered an appropriate field of study on a case-by-case basis for these scholarships. Some are narrowly drawn to only include certain types of medical degrees.

But in some cases, these could very well be scholarships specific to SLP degrees while excludig other areas of healthcare. One such scholarship is offered through McLaren Healthcare, a healthcare system based in Michigan that offers a very generous SLP scholarship award of up to $6,000 per year.

It pays to look at the fine print, however. Many of these organizations have specific motives in offering these scholarships, and McLaren is a good example. In exchange for their scholarship, you are expected to commit to at least one year of employment at a McLaren facility post licensure. You may not have much control over which facility or even which department you will be assigned to in order to fulfill that commitment. Depending on your situation, this might feel like a limiting factor, or it could be exactly the kind of opportunity for travel and sure-shot job placement you’re looking for.

Support and Research Organization Scholarships

Although speech-language pathology is a field with broad application across many different diseases and disorders as well as injury rehabilitation, there are some disorders where it is more commonly used as a treatment than others. In some cases, such as with autism, there are strong community support groups and non-profit organizations dedicated to supporting research and treatment.

These organizations often offer scholarship funds to students who are going into fields that are in-demand among those communities. The Autism Science Foundation, for instance, offers pre- and post-doctoral training awards each year totaling up to $35,000 for students studying fields scientifically related to autism. This includes motor function and other types of research that SLP fits into directly.

There are also groups with slightly broader missions that might include funding SLP education. The Charles A. Frueauff Foundation, for example, provides scholarships of up to $10,000 to graduate students studying a number of physical and occupational therapy fields, including speech-language pathology.

Don’t be afraid to get off the beaten path looking for these scholarships. Colorado students, for instance, might be surprised to find that the Scottish Rite Foundation, a somewhat secretive society of freemasons there, offers the Dwight A. Hamilton Scholarship in Speech Language Pathology to Colorado residents each year.

University Graduate Program Scholarships

Almost all SLP graduate programs have scholarship and grant opportunities available through the college or university that offer them. These may be specific to SLP studies or available to any graduate student.

Although the competition will be greater for scholarships that are more widely available, you might find that there are more awards offered through them, so it’s still worth your time to apply.

But there are often scholarships specific to CSD or SLP masters programs too, like the array of scholarships available at the University of Utah College of Health.

The best resource for all of these types of scholarships, as well as many others, will be through your school’s financial aid office. They keep comprehensive lists of available scholarships that can quickly be sorted to find those that you may qualify for, and they offer expert assistance to help stack the odds in your favor when it’s time to apply for those grants.

25 Speech Pathology Scholarships for Graduate Students

Speech-language pathologists, also known as speech therapists, diagnose and treat patients’ communication disorders. These disorders include but are not limited to the effects of physical injury or Autism Spectrum Disorder. As so many medical conditions can impede people’s communication skills, speech therapists must complete a rigorous master’s program and earn a license in their home state. From starting a program to receiving a license, the process can take four or more years (i.e., two years to earn a degree and two or more years to meet a state’s experience requirement).

Earning a graduate degree can be a heavy financial burden, and as a result, many speech therapists-in-training turn to scholarships to reduce their debt burden. This article highlights 25 scholarship opportunities that might help you pay for your degree should you qualify and be selected. Each scholarship includes a brief description, the award amount, and a link to the scholarship website. As you read, please keep in mind that some information may have changed since this article’s publication (November 2019)

scholarships for speech language pathology graduate students

When to submit:

Each year, National AMBUCS, Inc. accepts applications for its scholarship program from February 1st until May 1st.

Students must submit all portions of their application before the May 1st deadline. The online application will allow students to save their work and return at a later time.

In addition to filling out general information, the student will be required to upload:

  • Their  FAFSA  (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) SAR (Student Aid Report)
  • Proof of enrollment into an accredited program as outlined above and
  • One-page personal statement.

For Applicants

February 1 – Application Opens for students

May 1 – Application Closes for students

May 15 – Chapter Sponsorship forms due ( if you have been nominated by a local AMBUCS chapter)

June – August – Scholarship Committee meets to award scholarships. Awarded Students, chapters and donors will be notified by email. Recipients will be published on the AMBUCS website.  Once notified of your award, please update any school or program changes to AMBUCS.  Award monies will be sent to the financial aid office of the educational institution.

Please be aware that the taxes of whoever is financially supporting the student must be filed before the FAFSA can be filled out. It also can take several weeks for the SAR to be delivered, so please   plan ahead   so you can meet the deadline.

In order to apply for this scholarship you must fill out the FAFSA and supply us with your SAR; even if you do not want to apply for Federal aid. You can accept or decline any aid offer made by the government.

Past the eligibility requirements,   financial need   is the first hurdle every applicant must pass (including those that are chapter sponsored). On the application, you will find an area to provide details about new financial information not reflected on your SAR (additional loans, etc.).

Proof of Enrollment

Please upload a document from your registrar’s office confirming your enrollment (you might also find this on your student portal somewhere). If this is your first year, the registrar’s office may not be willing to give you proof of enrollment at this early stage. In that case, please email [email protected].

Writing your personal statement

Your personal statement should be just that….personal. You don’t need to tell us school is expensive and long and all the other things that are true for every single applicant. We would like to hear what sort of therapist you want to be and why as well as any volunteerism (especially serving people with challenges to mobility or independence – through AMBUCS or other organizations). We will be looking for all three of those elements in your statement…and, yes, we actually read them!

Juggling moving out of state, paying for school, paying for life, and anything else life throws at me has been difficult, but scholarships like these are a rainbow in a cloudy sky.

The University of New Mexico

I was able to repay the gift through excelling in my academic pursuits. I was able to have extra clinical hours in my school’s pro bono pediatric clinic. I would not have been able to do this without a scholarship.

Southwest Baptist University

My scholarship allows me to focus on my education. This scholarship has lessened the financial stress and allows me to focus solely on becoming the best clinician that I can be.

The George Washington University

I am excited for my future career in occupational therapy, and it is the AMBUCS scholarship donors that are helping make it possible for me to be an occupational therapist one day.

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center

This contribution was extremely appreciated and I am truly grateful!…I’ll be looking to volunteer with AMBUCS in the future.

Grand Valley State University DPT '26

I just wanted to thank you for your generosity and for choosing to help out OT students. This scholarship means a lot to me, and it will help ease some of the financial burdens that come with graduate school!

Student Ethics Essay Award (SEEA)

The SEEA program is conducted as part of ASHA's efforts to enhance ethics education activities. The goal of the program is to encourage students to think about ethical decision making and create greater awareness of situations that could pose ethical dilemmas as they prepare to start careers in audiology, speech-language pathology, or speech, language, and hearing sciences. The essay competition is open to students who are enrolled in any undergraduate, post baccalaureate, or entry-level graduate program in communication sciences and disorders (CSD). Participating students write an essay on the selected ethics topic and submit it to their CSD program director or his/her designee for initial review; each program director/designee may select up to five student essays for submission to ASHA for the final review and selection process. Members of ASHA's Board of Ethics review the essays and select three winning authors. Visit the ASHA website at: https://asha.org/practice/ethics/essay_award for more information about the essay topic, deadlines, and instructions for applying.

Scholarships for Speech Pathology Majors

Speech Pathology Majors embark on the noble pursuit of helping children and adults with speech disorder or delays learn how to communicate more clearly and effectively. But, before they can begin their work as a pathologist or pathology assistant, Speech Pathology Majors must first pay for their college education. Luckily, a number of scholarships are available. Some scholarships are offered by nonprofit organizations and funds such as National AMBUCS, Inc. and the Dennis Klatt Memorial Fund. Others are offered by the individual colleges and universities with Speech Pathology programs such as Ball State University, Emerson College, Idaho State University and Northern Arizona University. In general, applying students will need to meet a minimum grade point average, demonstrate a certain level of financial need, obtain letters of recommendation or write Speech Pathology-related essays. Why a voice aerobics® scholarship.

When I attended graduate school to obtain my Masters Degree in Speech-Language Pathology, I was already working full-time as an emergency room nurse. In order to accommodate my course schedule, I worked 10 hour shifts before it was fashionable. Although I didn’t get off work until 1:30 am, I was often in class that same morning at 8am.

Juggling work, bills, and school were the life of a working student. Looking back now, I wonder how I did it! But, it serves as testimony that when we are committed to a goal, anything is possible. Now I want to help a student achieve hers or his goals!

Why Support a Student?

Being invited to be a guest lecture for graduate students is one of my favorite experiences. I think there is nothing better for students than to meet a practicing clinician, who can educate by sharing stories about “real” patients that are punctuated with enthusiasm and commitment to our profession.

When I interact with students, whether in a classroom, in a clinic, or across a booth at ASHA, I can tell quickly who has the passion, and who believes, as I do, that there is nothing more important than helping another person retain or restore their ability to communicate.

What is My Commitment?

In 2008, when I formed my company, Voice Aerobics, LLC, I committed to giving 10% of profits from product sales to Parkinson’s research. Over the last three years, I have honored that commitment and expanded it to include various other organizations and causes I support.

Annually, beginning May 20th, 2012, a check for $500 is awarded to a graduate student in speech-language pathology. This annual commitment represents the faith I have in my own business to continue to prosper and in the students, who represent the future of a profession I love so much.

Instructions for Applying:

Any student enrolled in an ASHA accredited graduate speech-language program is eligible to apply. Applications for 2023 will be accepted from March 15, 2023 through  April 30, 2023. Click on the link below to complete the application form. Return your completed form by email as an attachment by the deadline of midnight April 30, 2023. The scholarship recipient is announced in May.

Important Note to Applicants:

Please observe the word count and type your responses! As a student, it is often very hard when writing reports or patient evaluations to write succinctly.  As a practicing clinician, I am faced with the same challenge when submitting a 50 word abstract as a part of a conference proposal.  Good luck – don’t over think your responses – and write from the heart! Mary Spremulli, MA, CCC-SLP
