Is social media a blessing for teens, a curse for parents or perhaps a bit of both? We explore how social media affects teenage mental health and other key aspects of this ongoing dilemma.

It’s no secret social media has become an essential part of the average teenager’s everyday life. Whether it’s sharing photos on Instagram, messaging friends on Snapchat or choreographing a dance on TikTok, teens are enveloped by the online world of social media.

But is social media good for teenagers? Can the potential benefits balance out the well-documented problems? We sought out Associate Professor Alina Morawska, Centre Director at the Parenting and Family Support Centre in the UQ School of Psychology, to learn how social media affects teenagers and what parents can do to help.

How does social media affect teenagers’ mental health?

Alina says teenagers on social media have “increased exposure to harm, social isolation, depression, anxiety and cyber-bullying.”

The impact of social media on teenagers can be significant. It’s not just a case of losing sleep and getting distracted during the day – social media can have far-reaching negative effects on a teen’s mental health .

As the adolescent brain is still developing, it’s more vulnerable to time online. And since teens can sometimes struggle to self-regulate their screen time, their exposure – and the risk of harm – increases. As a result, teen social media use often correlates with:

  • low self-esteem
  • loneliness.

“Adolescence is a time when peer relationships are particularly important, so there may very well be pressure from the peer circle to be online,” says Alina.

“If you’re not online, you’re missing out – you’re not part of the group.”

Depression and anxiety

While researchers have only just started to uncover the link between depression and social media, what they’ve discovered suggests increased social media use can intensify the symptoms of depression . Teens suffering from this will usually display an increase in loneliness and a decrease in social activities.

Another component is anxiety. Many teens are deeply devoted to their social media accounts and content, which leads them to feel an immense amount of stress – to respond quickly, to post perfect photos with witty captions and, of course, to receive lots of likes. Add cyber-bullying and other offensive online behaviours to the mix, and it’s easy to see why social media causes a great deal of anxiety for teens .

Low self-esteem

Another way social media affects teenager’s mental health is by exacerbating any existing problems with low self-esteem . Teens are particularly vulnerable to feeling down about themselves and their bodies when they follow certain celebrities and influencers online. They’re getting content, feedback and pressure from many more people than they ever would encounter in the real world. This makes it easy for teens to play a dangerous comparison game when they see people’s curated feed online and think they are happier, better-looking or more well-off than they are. This can be detrimental to their mental health.

How long does the average teenager spend on social media?

How long does the average teenager spend on social media? The average teenager spends about 1.6 hours on social media every day.

According to Australian statistics from Roy Morgan :

  • girls aged 14-24 spend 822 minutes on social media each week (about 2 hours a day )
  • boys aged 14-24 spend 528 minutes a week (just over an hour each day ).

The average teenager spends about 1.6 hours on social media every day.

Research carried out by the Australian government’s eSafety Commissioner revealed that in a 6-month period in 2020, 4 in 10 teens (44% of those surveyed) had a negative experience online. This included being contacted by a stranger, sent inappropriate content or being deliberately excluded from events or social groups.  

Despite this, however, teens still spent an average of 14.4 hours a week online and used an average of 4 social media services regularly. 

Alina shed some light on why social media is such an addictive vice for young minds.

“Social networking is a way of being and interacting with others and the world these days,” she says.

“Humans are inherently social, so our use of social media is consistent with this. However, because of the way social media is structured – always on, always available – it can be difficult to switch off from it.”

Should parents limit their teenager’s use of social media?

There are several cases where it might be suitable for a parent to limit their teenager’s social media use.

  • The first reason is addiction . If social media takes up a large proportion of their day, affects their sleep and schoolwork, and they don’t have the self-regulation to limit their use themselves, it may be time to step in and implement some boundaries.
  • The second reason is if you have reason to believe your teenager is engaging in inappropriate and irresponsible online behaviour or if they are exposed to it. Teens shouldn’t have the privilege of their own social media accounts unless they’re able to conduct themselves responsibly online.
  • And thirdly, if your teen is showing signs of mental illness such as depression, anxiety or disordered eating related to social media, it’s a good idea to restrict their use and seek professional help.

In most cases, though, banning or limiting social media use won’t address the underlying issues and may only lead to resentment. So, we asked Alina how else parents can help their teens with their social media usage.

“It’s important for parents to consider their own relationship with social media and what they are modelling to their child,” says Alina.

“Consider setting some household rules around social media and devices for everyone, such as no devices at the dinner table.”

“Encourage discussions about the pros and cons of media use.”

While there are many downfalls of social media, there are benefits for teenagers as well. Social media platforms allow teens to:

  • create online identities and be part of a community
  • build social networks and communicate with others, which can provide them with support
  • find entertainment, distraction, humour, education and information about social movements and human rights issues.

There are many positives associated with social media, and it’s important for teens to develop social media savviness to prepare them for adulthood where, undeniably, social media remains a major part of daily life. You can work with your teen to help them find the right balance between social media and their mental health. In January, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook’s parent company Meta, appeared at a congressional hearing to answer questions about how social media potentially harms children. Zuckerberg opened by saying: “The existing body of scientific work has not shown a causal link between using social media and young people having worse mental health.”

But many social scientists would disagree with that statement. In recent years, studies have started to show a causal link between teen social media use and reduced well-being or mood disorders, chiefly depression and anxiety.

Ironically, one of the most cited studies into this link focused on Facebook.

Researchers delved into whether the platform’s introduction across college campuses in the mid 2000s increased symptoms associated with depression and anxiety. The answer was a clear yes , says MIT economist Alexey Makarin, a coauthor of the study, which appeared in the November 2022 American Economic Review . “There is still a lot to be explored,” Makarin says, but “[to say] there is no causal evidence that social media causes mental health issues, to that I definitely object.”

The concern, and the studies, come from statistics showing that social media use in teens ages 13 to 17 is now almost ubiquitous. Two-thirds of teens report using TikTok, and some 60 percent of teens report using Instagram or Snapchat, a 2022 survey found. (Only 30 percent said they used Facebook.) Another survey showed that girls, on average, allot roughly 3.4 hours per day to TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, compared with roughly 2.1 hours among boys. At the same time, more teens are showing signs of depression than ever, especially girls ( SN: 6/30/23 ).

As more studies show a strong link between these phenomena, some researchers are starting to shift their attention to possible mechanisms. Why does social media use seem to trigger mental health problems? Why are those effects unevenly distributed among different groups, such as girls or young adults? And can the positives of social media be teased out from the negatives to provide more targeted guidance to teens, their caregivers and policymakers?

“You can’t design good public policy if you don’t know why things are happening,” says Scott Cunningham, an economist at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

Increasing rigor

Concerns over the effects of social media use in children have been circulating for years, resulting in a massive body of scientific literature. But those mostly correlational studies could not show if teen social media use was harming mental health or if teens with mental health problems were using more social media.

Moreover, the findings from such studies were often inconclusive, or the effects on mental health so small as to be inconsequential. In one study that received considerable media attention, psychologists Amy Orben and Andrew Przybylski combined data from three surveys to see if they could find a link between technology use, including social media, and reduced well-being. The duo gauged the well-being of over 355,000 teenagers by focusing on questions around depression, suicidal thinking and self-esteem.

Digital technology use was associated with a slight decrease in adolescent well-being , Orben, now of the University of Cambridge, and Przybylski, of the University of Oxford, reported in 2019 in Nature Human Behaviour . But the duo downplayed that finding, noting that researchers have observed similar drops in adolescent well-being associated with drinking milk, going to the movies or eating potatoes.

Holes have begun to appear in that narrative thanks to newer, more rigorous studies.

In one longitudinal study, researchers — including Orben and Przybylski — used survey data on social media use and well-being from over 17,400 teens and young adults to look at how individuals’ responses to a question gauging life satisfaction changed between 2011 and 2018. And they dug into how the responses varied by gender, age and time spent on social media.

Social media use was associated with a drop in well-being among teens during certain developmental periods, chiefly puberty and young adulthood, the team reported in 2022 in Nature Communications . That translated to lower well-being scores around ages 11 to 13 for girls and ages 14 to 15 for boys. Both groups also reported a drop in well-being around age 19. Moreover, among the older teens, the team found evidence for the Goldilocks Hypothesis: the idea that both too much and too little time spent on social media can harm mental health.

“There’s hardly any effect if you look over everybody. But if you look at specific age groups, at particularly what [Orben] calls ‘windows of sensitivity’ … you see these clear effects,” says L.J. Shrum, a consumer psychologist at HEC Paris who was not involved with this research. His review of studies related to teen social media use and mental health is forthcoming in the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research.

Cause and effect

That longitudinal study hints at causation, researchers say. But one of the clearest ways to pin down cause and effect is through natural or quasi-experiments. For these in-the-wild experiments, researchers must identify situations where the rollout of a societal “treatment” is staggered across space and time. They can then compare outcomes among members of the group who received the treatment to those still in the queue — the control group.

That was the approach Makarin and his team used in their study of Facebook. The researchers homed in on the staggered rollout of Facebook across 775 college campuses from 2004 to 2006. They combined that rollout data with student responses to the National College Health Assessment, a widely used survey of college students’ mental and physical health.

The team then sought to understand if those survey questions captured diagnosable mental health problems. Specifically, they had roughly 500 undergraduate students respond to questions both in the National College Health Assessment and in validated screening tools for depression and anxiety. They found that mental health scores on the assessment predicted scores on the screenings. That suggested that a drop in well-being on the college survey was a good proxy for a corresponding increase in diagnosable mental health disorders. 

Compared with campuses that had not yet gained access to Facebook, college campuses with Facebook experienced a 2 percentage point increase in the number of students who met the diagnostic criteria for anxiety or depression, the team found.

When it comes to showing a causal link between social media use in teens and worse mental health, “that study really is the crown jewel right now,” says Cunningham, who was not involved in that research.

A need for nuance

The social media landscape today is vastly different than the landscape of 20 years ago. Facebook is now optimized for maximum addiction, Shrum says, and other newer platforms, such as Snapchat, Instagram and TikTok, have since copied and built on those features. Paired with the ubiquity of social media in general, the negative effects on mental health may well be larger now.

Moreover, social media research tends to focus on young adults — an easier cohort to study than minors. That needs to change, Cunningham says. “Most of us are worried about our high school kids and younger.” 

And so, researchers must pivot accordingly. Crucially, simple comparisons of social media users and nonusers no longer make sense. As Orben and Przybylski’s 2022 work suggested, a teen not on social media might well feel worse than one who briefly logs on. 

Researchers must also dig into why, and under what circumstances, social media use can harm mental health, Cunningham says. Explanations for this link abound. For instance, social media is thought to crowd out other activities or increase people’s likelihood of comparing themselves unfavorably with others. But big data studies, with their reliance on existing surveys and statistical analyses, cannot address those deeper questions. “These kinds of papers, there’s nothing you can really ask … to find these plausible mechanisms,” Cunningham says.

One ongoing effort to understand social media use from this more nuanced vantage point is the SMART Schools project out of the University of Birmingham in England. Pedagogical expert Victoria Goodyear and her team are comparing mental and physical health outcomes among children who attend schools that have restricted cell phone use to those attending schools without such a policy. The researchers described the protocol of that study of 30 schools and over 1,000 students in the July BMJ Open.

Goodyear and colleagues are also combining that natural experiment with qualitative research. They met with 36 five-person focus groups each consisting of all students, all parents or all educators at six of those schools. The team hopes to learn how students use their phones during the day, how usage practices make students feel, and what the various parties think of restrictions on cell phone use during the school day.

Talking to teens and those in their orbit is the best way to get at the mechanisms by which social media influences well-being — for better or worse, Goodyear says. Moving beyond big data to this more personal approach, however, takes considerable time and effort. “Social media has increased in pace and momentum very, very quickly,” she says. “And research takes a long time to catch up with that process.”

Until that catch-up occurs, though, researchers cannot dole out much advice. “What guidance could we provide to young people, parents and schools to help maintain the positives of social media use?” Goodyear asks. “There’s not concrete evidence yet.”

This scoping review of research explores which disciplines have studied social media as it relates to education and, more broadly, use by students of high school and college age. The sample explores 10 years of research (2009–2018). A search of Web of Science yielded 580 relevant peer-reviewed articles published through the end of 2018, with 260 (44.8%) of these articles focused on education. Research in this area has been on a steady upward trajectory since 2009, the first year when relevant social media articles appeared. About half of this research was conducted in North American settings, and quantitative surveys were the most popular data collection method. Findings show that within education, the dominant themes of research on social media were use as a teaching and learning tool; adoption, use, and beliefs; digital literacy; effects of use; and identity. Outside of education, the dominant themes were negative behaviors, health issues, identity development and expression, digital citizenship, and social relationships. This review shows several areas where education researchers and practitioners would benefit from attending to research conducted outside of our discipline. Although the field of educational research sufficiently addresses issues like teacher professional development and pedagogical uses of social media, the larger issues that affect our students and, in turn, the school context are being explored in other disciplines.

This study is entitled, “Effects of Social Media on Academic Performance of Don Ramon E. Costales Memorial National High School Students.” The study was conducted at Don Ramon E. Costales Memorial National High School in Villasis, Pangasinan.The Philippines This study aimed to determine the extent of students’ utilization of social networking sites, their reasons for using social media, and their social media preference. it also tried to explore how the different variables such as sex, age, religion, grade level, type of social networking sites, and the number of hours spent in studying affect the extent of their social media usage. Cooperation with the institution was done to administer the survey questionnaires. Binary logistic regression analysis and descriptive methods were used. Findings reveal that majority of the students used Facebook to communicate with their friends and relatives followed by Instagram. The students were using social media daily for 1-5 hours. The only variable that affected the extent of utilization of social media was the respondents’ gender. With 0.87, females were two times more exposed to social media rather than males. The study concludes that females are more exposed to social media rather than males. The use of social media by females has to do with their desire to communicate or share more personal information, revealing more about their personal lives. They use social networking sites to make connections and stay in touch with family or friends. Men, by contrast, use social media to gather the information they need to build influence. Facebook is the most preferred social networking site for students to connect with family and friends. They are entertained by Facebook. They use a long time chatting with friends rather than doing school works. Facebook becomes their daily routine. The study recommends for other researchers who wish to do a similar study, employ other variables which are not tested in the study to find other factors that affect the extent of social media usage of the students.

Understanding the Science of Social Media

Schools can play a big role in educating students and their families about the potential pitfalls of social media.

Author and futurist Brian Solis has said that “social media is more about sociology and psychology than technology.” To take that a step further, social media really comes down to neurology—to how it influences our brains. Researchers have found a link between the amount of time adolescents spend on social media and their levels of depression , particularly among girls, and Jean Twenge, a professor of psychology, asserts that social media is the reason for a drastic uptick in mental health issues among children.

Social media has become so much of a concern that the U.S. surgeon general declared that no one under the age of 14 should be on social media , and states are starting to take action to limit usage and hold social media companies accountable.

As educators know, schools are facing unprecedented amounts of student mental health and misconduct issues with strong connections to social media. School leaders are at a loss trying to keep up with these issues. Doing so will take a multifaceted approach to address the social media crisis among students. The first step is awareness of social media’s influence on the brain, followed by educating students and parents on ways to navigate these troubled waters. 

What’s Behind Our Need for Social Media?

Why is it so easy to fall into a TikTok rabbit hole? You know these situations when you spend hours mindlessly scrolling Facebook, Instagram, etc., with no sense of time. One reason could be the influence that social media has on a chemical neurotransmitter in your brain.

Dopamine is a powerful and important neurotransmitter. It’s known as the “get up and go” or “pursuit” neurotransmitter. It motivates us to get things done. We feel our best when our dopamine level is associated with extended periods of effort. Our dopamine level goes out of whack when we receive repeated “dopamine hits” with little to no effort at all. When this occurs, the dopamine is in control of us, leading to compulsive behaviors.

Daniel Z. Lieberman, MD, asserts that there are peripersonal and extrapersonal spaces . Your peripersonal space includes items on your person or within your reach. Items in your extrapersonal space are literally out of reach. A hunter going out in the woods to hunt requires extended periods of effort to do so. Dopamine will be released over that period of time in anticipation of the hunt. The deer is out of the hunter’s reach; therefore, it exists in extrapersonal space. Once the hunter has the deer, it’s in peripersonal space, and dopamine shuts off.

So how is all this related to social media? Social media content falls under extrapersonal space. There is something always there, and dopamine is constantly pursuing it. As more and more dopamine gets released, your threshold increases, making it more and more difficult to feel accomplished. You end up compulsively scrolling and scrolling .

Social media is designed to keep our interest through the use of powerful artificial intelligence algorithms. These algorithms will quickly probe you to determine your interests. Ultimately, they are seeking to get your dopamine levels up, so you go into pursuit mode. The ease of access and endless quantity is what especially complicates the addictive behaviors associated with social media.

How can we expect our students (and their parents) to understand how to navigate those social media waters without this understanding?

Social Media Education

Schools are ideally set up to help educate youth and the community to bring about an awareness of the driving force behind social media and provide practical safeguards. Offering health classes or having the school counselor teach lessons is a good place to start, as early as elementary school. It’s important to note that when these topics are discussed in class, information should also be sent home.

Common Sense Media has lots of free information and resources to help teachers and school administrators educate students and parents on digital citizenship, including social media. In particular, they have self-paced trainings and videos.

Lesson topics should include the following elements.

Usage limits: The U.S. surgeon general recommends that children under the age of 14 should not be on social media; most social media apps set the age requirement at 13+.

If a parent is comfortable with age 14, then a daily usage limit is the next step. Increased social media use has been associated with higher levels of mental health issues , decreased academic performance, lack of exercise, and general decreased well-being. Therefore, children should be limited to 30–60 minutes a day to help avoid those issues. Both Google and Apple have screen time trackers to help parents or guardians monitor usage.

Appropriate conduct and safety: Digital etiquette and conduct while online is an integral piece of the education program. Students should be encouraged to sign a safety contract with their parents or guardians, and they should learn how to be a good digital citizen, how to identify and respond to grooming and predatory behaviors, and the dangers of sexting.

How to report cyberbullying or harassment: Inevitably, students will encounter some form of cyberbullying or harassment while online, as either a victim or a bystander. Steps should include:

  • Do not respond.
  • Save the evidence.
  • Report it directly to the app company .
  • Contact the local police department if it involves a threat or ongoing harassment.
  • Notify the school’s principal if it’s associated with the school. 

Yearly Parent Informational Meeting

A yearly informational meeting should be held with your building’s parent group, covering the following topics:

  • Science behind social media
  • Social media apps and trends
  • How to implement a phone’s parental controls ( Apple and Google Play )
  • Turning off location sharing to social media apps ( Apple and Android )
  • How to report inappropriate social media use
  • External parental control software options
  • Social media tips for parents

All educators and school leaders are urged to recognize their roles and responsibilities in better educating their students and in turn the community. Together, we can best help our youth and counter some of these troubling trends.

Social media has both positive and negative impacts on children and adolescents.

The influence of social media on youth mental health is shaped by many complex factors, including, but not limited to, the amount of time children and adolescents spend on platforms, the type of content they consume or are otherwise exposed to, the activities and interactions social media affords, and the degree to which it disrupts activities that are essential for health like sleep and physical activity. 6 Importantly, different children and adolescents are affected by social media in different ways, based on their individual strengths and vulnerabilities, and based on cultural, historical, and socio-economic factors. 7 , 8 There is broad agreement among the scientific community that social media has the potential to both benefit and harm children and adolescents. 6 , 9

Brain development is a critical factor to consider when assessing the risk for harm. Adolescents, ages 10 to 19, are undergoing a highly sensitive period of brain development. 10 , 11 This is a period when risk-taking behaviors reach their peak, when well-being experiences the greatest fluctuations, and when mental health challenges such as depression typically emerge. 12 , 13 , 14 Furthermore, in early adolescence, when identities and sense of self-worth are forming, brain development is especially susceptible to social pressures, peer opinions, and peer comparison. 11 , 13 Frequent social media use may be associated with distinct changes in the developing brain in the amygdala (important for emotional learning and behavior) and the prefrontal cortex (important for impulse control, emotional regulation, and moderating social behavior), and could increase sensitivity to social rewards and punishments. 15 , 16 As such, adolescents may experience heightened emotional sensitivity to the communicative and interactive nature of social media. 16 Adolescent social media use is predictive of a subsequent decrease in life satisfaction for certain developmental stages including for girls 11–13 years old and boys 14–15 years old. 17 Because adolescence is a vulnerable period of brain development, social media exposure during this period warrants additional scrutiny.

  • The Potential Benefits of Social Media Use Among Children and Adolescents

Social media can provide benefits for some youth by providing positive community and connection with others who share identities, abilities, and interests. It can provide access to important information and create a space for self-expression. 9 The ability to form and maintain friendships online and develop social connections are among the positive effects of social media use for youth. 18 , 19 These relationships can afford opportunities to have positive interactions with more diverse peer groups than are available to them offline and can provide important social support to youth. 18 The buffering effects against stress that online social support from peers may provide can be especially important for youth who are often marginalized, including racial, ethnic, and sexual and gender minorities. 20 , 21 , 22 For example, studies have shown that social media may support the mental health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, transgender, queer, intersex and other youths by enabling peer connection, identity development and management, and social support. 23 Seven out of ten adolescent girls of color report encountering positive or identity-affirming content related to race across social media platforms. 24 A majority of adolescents report that social media helps them feel more accepted (58%), like they have people who can support them through tough times (67%), like they have a place to show their creative side (71%), and more connected to what’s going on in their friends’ lives (80%). 25 In addition, research suggests that social media-based and other digitally-based mental health interventions may also be helpful for some children and adolescents by promoting help-seeking behaviors and serving as a gateway to initiating mental health care. 8 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29

  • The Potential Harms of Social Media Use Among Children and Adolescents

Over the last decade, evidence has emerged identifying reasons for concern about the potential negative impact of social media on children and adolescents.

A longitudinal cohort study of U.S. adolescents aged 12–15 (n=6,595) that adjusted for baseline mental health status found that adolescents who spent more than 3 hours per day on social media faced double the risk of experiencing poor mental health outcomes including symptoms of depression and anxiety. 30

As of 2021, 8th and 10th graders now spend an average of 3.5 hours per day on social media. 31 In a unique natural experiment that leveraged the staggered introduction of a social media platform across U.S. colleges, the roll-out of the platform was associated with an increase in depression (9% over baseline) and anxiety (12% over baseline) among college-aged youth (n = 359,827 observations). 32 The study’s co-author also noted that when applied across the entirety of the U.S. college population, the introduction of the social media platform may have contributed to more than 300,000 new cases of depression. 32 , 33 If such sizable effects occurred in college-aged youth, these findings raise serious concerns about the risk of harm from social media exposure for children and adolescents who are at a more vulnerable stage of brain development.

Limits on the use of social media have resulted in mental health benefits for young adults and adults. A small, randomized controlled trial in college-aged youth found that limiting social media use to 30 minutes daily over three weeks led to significant improvements in depression severity. 34 This effect was particularly large for those with high baseline levels of depression who saw an improvement in depression scores by more than 35%. 35 Another randomized controlled trial among young adults and adults found that deactivation of a social media platform for four weeks improved subjective well-being (i.e., self-reported happiness, life satisfaction, depression, and anxiety) by about 25–40% of the effect of psychological interventions like self-help therapy, group training, and individual therapy. 36

In addition to these recent studies, correlational research on associations between social media use and mental health has indicated reason for concern and further investigation. These studies point to a higher relative concern of harm in adolescent girls and those already experiencing poor mental health, 37 , 38 , 39 as well as for particular health outcomes like cyberbullying-related depression, 40 body image and disordered eating behaviors, 41 and poor sleep quality linked to social media use. 42 For example, a study conducted among 14-year-olds (n = 10,904) found that greater social media use predicted poor sleep, online harassment, poor body image, low self-esteem, and higher depressive symptom scores with a larger association for girls than boys. 43 A majority of parents of adolescents say they are somewhat, very, or extremely worried that their child’s use of social media could lead to problems with anxiety or depression (53%), lower self-esteem (54%), being harassed or bullied by others (54%), feeling pressured to act a certain way (59%), and exposure to explicit content (71%). 44

Seven Insights From Teens About Social Media and Mental Health

For better or for worse, social media has become the go-to for hot takes and heated debate, whether it’s about the election, movies, or pizza. But for parents and others who care about kids, the most important discussion at the moment is about the existence of social media itself, and how it affects the mental health of children, teens, and young adults.

For many, Instagram, TikTok, X/Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube, and so on are at best a time suck, and at worst a virtual-world cesspool bubbling with bullies , braggarts, and bad ideas. It seems logical, then, to think that these platforms—which zoomed to prominence only within the last two decades—are somehow to blame for the concurrent rise in the youth mental health crisis .

And, indeed, lawmakers and public health officials are seeking measures to restrict social media’s hold on a population that still has a lot of growing up to do. Earlier this year, the U.S. surgeon general, in an opinion piece in the New York Times , even recommended warning labels on social media, alerting users to the platforms’ association with mental health problems in teens.

But other experts point out that there haven’t been enough studies to prove causation, only correlation, and they feel that efforts to limit young people’s access to these platforms are misdirected. What’s more, they say, oversimplifying the problem distracts us from finding the true culprits behind the rising anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts among young people.

Now, a new survey , funded by Hopelab with support from Common Sense Media , offers a slightly different perspective. Aiming to deepen our understanding of social media among teens and young adults, the researchers reached out to young people themselves—instead of their parents, teachers, or doctors. Their results illuminate just how complex the relationship between young adults and social media actually is.

The youth POV

The survey’s title describes it best: A Double-Edged Sword: How Diverse Communities of Young People Think About the Multifaceted Relationship Between Social Media and Mental Health . Distinguishing itself from other recent surveys on teens and social media (such as those from Gallup and the Institute for Family Studies , and the ">Pew Research Center ), this one is a collaboration of sorts between the researchers and young people across the country aged 14 to 22.

Teens (age 14 to 17, in this study) and young adults (age 18 to 22) not only helped to design and survey, they also assisted in interpreting the nationally representative data once it was collected. In all, a racially diverse group of 1,274 young people participated. Some of the questions were open-ended, which allowed respondents to share their personal experiences. The outcome? Findings that feel richly nuanced and strikingly authentic. A few highlights:

Young people rely on social media for a range of needs. Almost a quarter said they are on social media almost constantly throughout the day (about the same as in 2020). More than half said social media is important for seeking support or advice, and that they use social media to feel less alone.

The vast majority said that social media is important for fun and entertainment (89%), communicating with friends (85%), and unwinding when stressed (83%). It’s also a creative outlet, as Amy Green, head of research at Hopelab, points out. For instance, some said they create mood boards on Pinterest, which they turn to when they need a mental boost.

In fact, almost 40% of teens and young adults who use social media said that it cheers them up when they’re feeling sad, stressed, or anxious—the same number as those who reported feeling neither good nor bad. Only 8% said social media makes them feel worse, and 13% said they experience both negative and positive feelings.

They are aware of social media’s downsides and try to control their use. Almost three-quarters admitted they reach for it when they’re bored; almost half said they use it more than they intend to or can’t control their use; 46% acknowledge that it has taken time away from activities they care about.

The good news, says Green, is that many young people also took action to limit and shape their social media use so that it felt healthier to them. Across all age groups, more than three-quarters had, in the previous 12 months, taken measures to control what they see—curating their feed to get rid of posts they prefer not to see (67%); or taking a temporary (63%) or permanent (41%) break from a social media account.

Older adolescents (age 18 to 22) were likelier than the younger group (14 to 17) to identify the downsides of social media and then take action. For instance, half of young adults admitted that social media gets in the way of sleep, compared to 34% of teens. And 51% of young adults believe social media has chipped away at their attention span and ability to concentrate, compared to 39% of teens. This suggests that perhaps teens can get better at navigating social media as they get older.

Negative interactions occur, but so do positive ones. More than half of young people who reported using social media said they often or sometimes encountered body shaming, sexist remarks, transphobia, homophobia, and racism, directed at themselves or others. White respondents were more likely to report coming across hurtful comments than their non-white peers, perhaps because they’re also less likely to curate their feeds to avoid potential hurtful comments (more on that below).

At the same time, young people also reported seeing positive comments—including those that celebrated a range of body shapes, sizes, and capabilities (68%); affirmed different racial and ethnic backgrounds (63%); and affirmed lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) identities (63%).

LGBTQ+ youths report experiencing support and identity affirmation with social media, but also exposure to harassment and stress. Almost three-quarters of these social media users say the platforms are important in helping them feel less alone, compared to only about half of self-described cisgender, heterosexual teens and young adults. Yet almost the same number of LGBTQ+ youths say posting to public accounts would open themselves up to harassment. More of these youths, compared to their non-LGBTQ+ peers, also reported bearing the brunt of the negative aspects of social media, including sleeping less and spending less time doing other activities they care about, such as exercising and spending time with friends.

These youths were also more likely than others to proactively minimize the hurtful comments. A whopping 89% said they’ve tried to avoid content they don’t like (compared to 74% of non-LGBTQ+ peers) or tinkered with their feed to tailor it to their needs. Still, a little over half said they prefer connecting over social media than in-person—that’s significantly more than the non-LGBTQ+ respondents who said they felt the same way (38%). When asked why, many LGBTQ+ users explained that they actually felt safer online.

More Black teens and young adults than non-Black youths cite social media as an important tool for specific tasks. For instance: keeping up with the news (80% of Blacks vs. 65% of whites); learning about professional or academic opportunities (80% of Blacks vs. 63% of Latinos vs. 53% of whites); and keeping up with influencers or creators (63% of Blacks vs. 52% for both whites and Latinos). (The sample sizes for Asian and Asian Pacific Islander young people were too small to be able to conduct significant testing, even though those individuals are included in the overall sample.)

Green says that, like other marginalized groups, Black youths saw social media as a way to connect with people who look like them or share their culture. It’s also a way to access resources they don’t necessarily have in their own community, such as information on universities, scholarships, and applications.

“We think of social media as being social,” says Green. “But it’s also a resource, and that’s something that often gets left out of the conversation.”

Black and Latino young people are more likely to quit a social media platform. Black (42%) and Latino (40%) teens and young adults are about twice as likely as white (21%) youth to report taking a permanent break from a social media account because of harassment or other negative experiences online. Black and Latino young people are also about one-and-a-half times more likely to take a temporary break.

In interviews, the youths explained that the racism they’ve had to deal with offline lowers tolerance for online harassment and discrimination. “The online world is sometimes safer and easier than day-to-day for them,” says Green, “because they can just block the negative comments or take a break from the platform.”

More teens and young adults with depressive symptoms experience negative feelings from social media—but they’re also more likely to use it as a source for support. Almost two-thirds of those with moderate to severe depressive symptoms and more than half of those with milder symptoms said that when they use social media, they felt that other people’s lives were better than theirs. Only 38% of non-depressed users said the same. In this report, we see similar discrepancies when it comes to feeling stressed about the bad news seen on social media, as well as feeling bad about their body or appearance.

Nevertheless, those who reported elevated depressive symptoms were also more likely to say that “social media is important for cheering them up” (78%) than those reporting no symptoms of depression at all. Those with elevated depressive symptoms were also more likely to find social media to be a good creative outlet and helpful for feeling less alone.

How adults can think about teens and social media

As Hopelab’s survey makes clear, the effects of social media on young people can’t be described with a blanket statement, and there probably isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution to the problems it has created.

“Social media can be harmful when used in some ways for some people,” says Green. “But used in a different way, it can also be a helpful resource.”

Most experts would agree with her—the impact of social media on an individual level depends on the person and the circumstances. What they don’t agree on is how, exactly, social media affects mental health on a population level and how to address that.

Candice Odgers , associate dean and professor of psychology and informatics at University of California, Irvine, points out that the science to date “does not support the widespread panic around social media and mental health.” She notes that, in addition to findings from multiple large-scale meta-analyses and reviews, an expert committee , convened by the National Academies of Sciences, reported in 2023 that the available research on social media and kids’ health and well-being shows only “small effects and weak associations.”

Efforts to limit social media use, then, seem hasty and, for some kids, even harmful. She fears that calling normal behavior shameful or dangerous can have bad consequences, leading to “conflict within families and may result in young people being shut out of spaces where they find community, support, and often help that they cannot otherwise access in their lives,” she explains in a written statement. Blaming social media also distracts from other possible reasons behind the adolescent mental health crisis, such as family- or school-related stressors.

Zach Rausch—the lead researcher on Jonathan Haidt’s recent bestselling book The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness —has a different perspective. He points out that some of social media’s benefits can simply be found online; for instance, mental health information can already be searched for and discovered on, say, a mental health website. As he puts it: “How much did hyper-viral social media platforms add to those benefits?”

He also adds there is more harm than good when it comes to social media. “You have hundreds (if not thousands) of kids who are harmed by TikTok challenges, pervasive and anonymous cyberbullying, sextortion, online predation, widespread sexual harassment—with all of these things, there is causality of harm there,” says Rausch, who is also an associate research scientist at New York University Stern School of Business.

“It’s happening on these platforms, through these platforms, and would not have happened without them. With any other consumer product designed for kids that is doing this on this scale, we would immediately take it off the shelves and fix it.”

Until that happens, most experts believe that parents should take a balanced approach when helping kids navigate social media. “Social media is more complicated than things like nicotine, which you should abstain from,” says Amy Green. “It’s about helping you recognize and work to minimize some of the more negative and challenging parts that might not be good for you—but still allow you to develop deeper connections with friends and find resources.”

Starting around age 10, children’s brains undergo a fundamental shift that spurs them to seek social rewards, including attention and approval from their peers.

At the same time, we hand them smartphones (Kids & Tech, Influence Central, 2018).

Social media platforms like Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Snapchat have provided crucial opportunities for interaction that are a normal part of development—especially during a time of severe isolation prompted by the pandemic. But they’ve also been increasingly linked to mental health problems , including anxiety, depressive symptoms, and body image concerns.

So, why do kids face a higher risk of harm on social media?

Let’s dig deeper.

Social rewards and the brain

Between the ages of 10 and 12, changes in the brain make social rewards—compliments on a new hairstyle, laughter from a classmate—start to feel a lot more satisfying. Specifically, receptors for the “happy hormones” oxytocin and dopamine multiply in a part of the brain called the ventral striatum, making preteens extra sensitive to attention and admiration from others.

“We know that social media activity is closely tied to the ventral striatum,” said Mitch Prinstein, APA’s chief science officer. “This region gets a dopamine and oxytocin rush whenever we experience social rewards.”

Right next door to the ventral striatum lies the ventral pallidum, a region of the brain key for motivating action. These structures, which lie beneath the more recently evolved cortex, are older parts of the brain that drive instinctual behaviors.

In adulthood, social media use is also linked to activation in the brain’s reward centers, but two key differences may lessen harm, Prinstein said. First, adults tend to have a fixed sense of self that relies less on feedback from peers. Second, adults have a more mature prefrontal cortex, an area that can help regulate emotional responses to social rewards.

Permanent and public

In youth, the drive for approval has historically helped kids and teens develop healthy social skills and connections. But arriving at school in a new pair of designer jeans, hoping your crush will smile at you in the hallway, is worlds away from posting a video on TikTok that may get thousands of views and likes, Prinstein said.

Part of what makes online interactions so different from in-person ones is their permanent—and often public—nature, according to research by Jacqueline Nesi, PhD, an assistant professor of psychology at Brown University ( Psychological Inquiry , Vol. 21, No. 3, 2020).

“After you walk away from a regular conversation, you don’t know if the other person liked it, or if anyone else liked it—and it’s over,” Prinstein said. “That’s not true on social media.”

Instead, kids, their friends, and even people they’ve never met can continue to seek, deliver, or withhold social rewards in the form of likes, comments, views, and follows.

As children and teens increasingly go online for entertainment and connection, parents, scholars, and policymakers are concerned that young people’s biology is making them particularly vulnerable to—and in some cases, even exploited by—social media.

Protecting young users

Further research shows how this biological vulnerability plays out in the lives of children and teens. Younger social media users are more likely than older ones to have body image issues, while kids who use Instagram or Snapchat before age 11 face a higher risk of online harassment (Saiphoo, A. N., & Vahedi, Z., Computers in Human Behavior , Vol. 101, 2019; Charmaraman, L., et al., Computers in Human Behavior , Vol. 127, 2022).

These and other findings have prompted recommendations from the U.S. Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy, MD, that social media and other technology companies help minimize fallout from their products, including by prioritizing the wellbeing of young users and by sharing their data with independent researchers ( Protecting youth mental health (PDF, 1.01MB) , The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory, 2021).

“It’s time we stopped trying to make a profit on kids’ developing brains,” Prinstein said. “For the first time in human history, we have given up autonomous control over our social relationships and interactions, and we now allow machine learning and artificial intelligence to make decisions for us.”

“We have already seen how this has created tremendous vulnerabilities to our way of life. It’s even scarier to consider how this may be changing brain development for an entire generation of youth,” he said.

Social media is a big part of our lives, and as a student, I’m here to share the pros and cons by highlighting my experience on TikTok and how it influences my student life!

Like many of you, I use TikTok not to just scroll or participate in the new trendy dances, but to share my journey with other people around the world who would relate to my content.

I started creating short TikTok videos sharing information that I learned through my studies (I’m a Bachelor of Islamic Studies student) and posting them for other people to gain some knowledge on the same topic.

As I posted overtime, to my surprise, I gained over 50K followers, although for me, it wasn’t about the followers; it was about sharing knowledge.

This experience for me was incredibly rewarding for many reasons, for example, I managed to target other Islamic students on TikTok who were from all over the world such as Medina, Turkey and Pakistan.

The girls I made friends with would share with each other what we had learned and how we hoped to see each other one day and study together.

Through my videos, I connected with other religious communities who wanted to learn about Islam and have also learned quite a lot from them about their religion.

The downside of my story is that social media isn’t all sunshine and rainbows!

While studying, I sometimes get notifications every minute, either from a comment, like, or follow.

When I check my phone, I think, ‘I’m just going to have a quick break’ but in reality, I get sucked into endless scrolling!

How do I find my balance?

It might be the question we’re all thinking about; first, it’s simple.

  • Going private as exams draw near and when assignments need to be done helps me focus on studies without pressure to create content or the temptation to check notifications.
  • Allocating a time for social media at the end of the night, knowing I’ve got everything done, or on a weekend, knowing I’ve caught up on all my studies!

The same brain circuits that are activated by eating chocolate and winning money are activated when teenagers see large numbers of “likes” on their own photos or the photos of peers in a social network, according to findings from a study in which researchers scanned teens’ brains while they used social media.

The study is published in Psychological Science , a journal of the Association for Psychological Science .

The 32 teenagers, ages 13-18, were told they were participating in a small social network similar to the popular photo-sharing app, Instagram. In an experiment at UCLA’s Ahmanson–Lovelace Brain Mapping Center, the researchers showed them 148 photographs on a computer screen for 12 minutes, including 40 photos that each teenager submitted, and analyzed their brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI. Each photo also displayed the number of likes it had supposedly received from other teenage participants — in reality, the number of likes was assigned by the researchers. (At the end of the procedure, the participants were told that the researchers decided on the number of likes a photo received.)

“When the teens saw their own photos with a large number of likes, we saw activity across a wide variety of regions in the brain,” said lead author Lauren Sherman, a researcher in the brain mapping center and the UCLA branch of the Children’s Digital Media Center, Los Angeles.

A region that was especially active is a part of the striatum called the nucleus accumbens, which is part of the brain’s reward circuitry, she said. This reward circuitry is thought to be particularly sensitive during adolescence. When the teenagers saw their photos with a large number of likes, the researchers also observed activation in regions that are known as the social brain and regions linked to visual attention.

In deciding whether to click that they liked a photo, the teenagers were highly influenced by the number of likes the photo had.

“We showed the exact same photo with a lot of likes to half of the teens and to the other half with just a few likes,” Sherman said. “When they saw a photo with more likes, they were significantly more likely to like it themselves. Teens react differently to information when they believe it has been endorsed by many or few of their peers, even if these peers are strangers.”

In the teenagers’ real lives, the influence of their friends is likely to be even more dramatic, said Mirella Dapretto, professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at UCLA’s Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Human Behavior.

“In the study, this was a group of virtual strangers to them, and yet they were still responding to peer influence; their willingness to conform manifested itself both at the brain level and in what they chose to like,” said Dapretto, a senior author of the study. “We should expect the effect would be magnified in real life, when teens are looking at likes by people who are important to them.”

The teenagers in the study viewed “neutral” photos — which included pictures of food and of friends — and “risky” photos — including of cigarettes, alcohol and teenagers wearing provocative clothing.

“For all three types of photographs — neutral, risky and even their own — the teens were more likely to click like if more people had liked them than if fewer people liked them,” said Patricia Greenfield, a UCLA distinguished professor of psychology, director of UCLA’s Children’s Digital Media Center, Los Angeles, and the study’s other senior author. “The conformity effect, which was particularly large for their own pictures, shows the importance of peer-approval.”

When teenagers looked at risky photos compared with neutral photos, they had less activation in areas associated with cognitive control and response inhibition, including the brain’s dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, bilateral prefrontal cortices and lateral parietal cortices.

These brain regions are involved in decision-making and can inhibit us from engaging in certain activities, or give us the green light to go ahead, Dapretto said.

Seeing photos that depict risky behavior seems to decrease activity in the regions that put the brakes on, perhaps weakening teens’ “be careful” filter, she said.

None of this is earth shattering news, in fact most of the behaviour is typical, albeit exacerbated, by using social media in excess. Yes, it is a real issue of concern, not disputing the severity at all. Sure the leting down of inhibitions, due primarily to intuiting there were no real consequences/risks, would be inviting just to see how it feels to be free from age appropirate and unacceptable behavior as learned through consequence of actions.

Using them in a Milgrim type situation may have been traumatic; being as acceptence is key at that age. Telling them the truth will not erase that emotional response they felt. Hopefully, they may realilze such 1 dimensional thoughtless behavior sucha as likes/dislikes is irrelevent in a 3-dimentional reality. So, most of us already knew this,(it started with too much TV wathcing.)therefore, what if anything did this studylead the researches to determine required more aggressive or expansive study of how to limit the impact of social media and re-inforce that it’s just a distraction and life is a co-operative interataction where we learn to counter, respond and understand how to relate and be independent, strong and compassionate for real. Instead of becoming anti social, depressed and vulnerable, which would include violence because they use social meadia in excess reinforcing a lack of the skill set to navigate life in 3-dimensions and learn to be strong, with the help of parent teachers and peers. Social media is useful, but it’s not survival and if it is, then someone is missing the boat or a new paradigm has preented itself and we are straddeling the void. (sorry long question and hardly read in as a psychologist)

I looked into the issue of the effects social media has on us. One article I found was written by Caitlin Hoffman on Sept 11, 2019, and it discusses a study from John Hopkins University on the effects increased social media activity has on teens’ mental health. The study found that the longer people spent on social media, the more likely they were to report or display negative effects. The article says that to fix this problem we don’t have to get rid of social media time entirely but rather balance the time spent on those sites. Social media has its benefits as well as problems; it’s a way for friends to keep in touch but could also expose teens to bullying. This study seeks to truthfully inform people of the ill effects of overusing social media. Other studies I’ve read agree with what they are saying: spending too much time online has negative consequences. These social media studies are very relevant as nowadays many teens, and people in general, are using social media, and many also experience problems that could be related to improper media usage. At the end of that article, it quotes Kira Riehm, lead author, Bloomberg School of Public Health: “‘We need to find a better way to balance the benefits of social media with possible negative health outcomes,’ says Riehm. ‘Setting reasonable boundaries, improving the design of social media platforms, and focusing interventions on media literacy are all ways in which we can potentially find this equilibrium.’” As it suggests, platforms could be skillfully developed to help with this issue. Being aware of the media’s effects on us and how we use it can also help. The study here suggests that we may be inclined to like things more out of a desire to fit in than from truly liking the post. So being aware of this phenomenon may help to reduce its influence over us. Studies like these studies respect the dignity of the human person by seeking to bring to light some issues in our culture and help them to fix them. Politics and sports have intermingled since the inception of the Olympic Games in Greece, but not until the 1980 Olympics did people fear that politics might destroy the Olympic movement and spirit. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the United States of America battled each other ideologically, economically, militarily, culturally, and politically in a very long Cold War that spanned more than forty years (1948–1991). In the midst of the Cold War, the two countries often met in sporting arenas around the world to compete for medals. In 1980, Moscow hosted the Summer Olympics, the first Olympics held in a communist country. Because the United States and the USSR were deep in conflict, especially over the recent movement of Soviet troops into Afghanistan in 1979, the Olympics became an extension of the political arena. The United States did not show up for the games. The 1980 Olympics were not unusual because they were political, but because the extreme degree to which they were politicized had never before been seen. Many Americans and Soviets alike feared that the Olympics would be destroyed if politics infiltrated the games.

In 1980, some Americans believed it their duty to boycott the Olympic Games. Others felt that the Olympics were meant be a de-politicized time when countries could put aside their differences and celebrate something they had in common: sports. These opinions were discussed and debated in the media. Journalists, politicians, athletes, and average citizens expressed their feelings about, and their justifications for or against, the boycott. The 1980 Summer Olympics are significant both in sports history and Cold War history.

In this two-day lesson, students will investigate the various reasons for the boycott and the ways Americans analyzed the 1980 Moscow Olympics at the time. Students will use periodicals as their tools for examining this period in history, and teachers should take the opportunity to discuss media bias. Students will gather information from articles and participate in a debate over whether the US should have boycotted. Additionally, a PowerPoint accompanies this lesson to aid in background information.

  • Students will be able to effectively debate using arguments gathered from American periodicals.

Day One (45–60 minutes)

Use the Think, Pair, Share method or a journal prompt, and ask students the following: Do you think political disagreements between countries should affect their participation in the Olympics? Or: If you were the leader of a country, and the Olympic Games were being held in another country that you believed committed crimes against its people, would you send your athletes to that country? (5 minutes)

Use the 1980 Moscow Olympics Background PowerPoint to introduce the Cold War and the back story to the Moscow Games. (7–10 minutes)

Take some time to discuss media bias with students. Tell students that they will be working with periodicals and that they should take bias into account when reading these sources. (5 minutes)

Divide students into groups of 3–4, and give each group a different article from US periodicals—arguments for and against the boycott found under Materials. Instruct students to read the articles in groups and underline sections that express an opinion about the boycott. (10–15 minutes)

Give each group a large piece of paper and colored markers. Ask each group to discuss their article and write down key ideas. At the top, they should indicate whether are pro-boycott, anti-boycott, or split. (5–10 minutes)

In groups, students should prepare for a debate on whether America should have boycotted the Olympics in Moscow. You can set up the debate in one of two ways.

  • Students can take on the personalities mentioned in the articles, such as athletes, politicians, the President, the International Olympic Committee, or even the US Olympic Committee, and debate each other on a television show that is similar to The McLaughlin Group or Meet the Press .
  • Students can be members of a presidential advisory committee on the Olympics. Their job is to convince the President which position to take on the boycott.

Some articles will have opposing viewpoints, so you should divide groups into two. Students should create a slogan that best represents their opinions. This slogan can be displayed during the debate. (15 minutes)

Students should prepare for the debate. To make the debate more interesting, students can dress appropriately for their roles.

Day Two (45–60 minutes)

Most of this class period will be spent on the debate for which students have prepared the previous day. Lay down the ground rules for the debate. There are a number of different ways to hold a class debate. (5 minutes)

Here is one suggestion for a class debate:

1) Assign a student to be a moderator or the teacher can be the moderator. If you chose option (a) for the debate, the moderator can act as the television host. If you chose option (b) for the debate, the moderator can be the President of the United States. 2) Only one person may speak at a time. 3) While a person is speaking others should take notes to use to further support their position or to attack the other side. 4) Provide a time limit for each person to speak (1–2 minutes). 5) Make sure each side has an equal amount of time to speak. 6) At the end of the debate, one student from each side gets one minute to provide closing arguments. 7) Remind them that they are not students, but either the personalities from the articles or members of a presidential committee, and they can feel free to take on these roles fully.

Allow students to meet with their sides for a few minutes. They should pick who will give the closing argument and perhaps who should speak first, second, third, etc. (5 minutes)

Proceed with the debate. (15–25 minutes)

Debrief the debate. Ask students how they would feel about the boycott using the barometer method. For this method, students line up on an imaginary line in the classroom with one end of the line representing the choice to boycott, and the other the choice to attend the Olympics. Students can stand anywhere along this spectrum and justify their position. (5 minutes)

Choose one or more of the articles from US periodicals — coverage of the Moscow Olympics and the boycott found under Materials. Read the article(s) as a class, and make sure to point out the media bias. This will give students some closure to the issue of the boycott as well as allow them to see more of the language and rhetoric used during the Cold War. (10–20 minutes)

Ask students to write a response to the following prompts. (5 minutes)

  • In this debate, who had the most persuasive argument and why?
  • Evaluate whether the Moscow Olympic Games were an appropriate battleground for the Cold War.

Assessments

In addition to the debate and written responses, students can be assessed in the following manner:

  • Students can write a letter to President Carter either in support of or in opposition to the boycott of the Moscow Olympics. Make sure they identify the reasons for their opinions.
  • Students can research other Olympics that have been politicized and write a comparison paper focusing on whether sports activities should be political.
  • Students can research articles from major American newspapers on whether the United States should have supported the Beijing Games in 2008. Many people felt that China, a communist country, had violated human rights and therefore should not be supported. It is an excellent, modern analogy to the Moscow Olympics.

As an extension to this lesson plan, the students can explore how Soviet periodicals covered the boycott and the Moscow Olympics. A good source with an English translation is The Current Digest of the Post-Soviet Press .

I’m standing in a sea of people coming out of this vast convention. And people are holding signs, smiling. There’s confetti everywhere. There are balloons, white, red, and blue. And there’s a lot of excitement.

From “The New York Times,” I’m Sabrina Tavernise. And this is “The Daily” from inside the Democratic National Convention Hall, where Kamala Harris has just accepted her party’s nomination, becoming the first woman of color in US history to do so.

Today, the story this convention told about Harris and whether that story could be enough to win.

It’s Friday, August 23.

The work and prayers of centuries have brought us to this day. What shall our our legacy be? What will our children say? Let me in my heart, when my days are through, America, America, I gave my best to you.

On night one of the Democratic National Convention, the evening was really defined by this very emotional, quite bittersweet goodbye from President Biden.

And there’s nothing we cannot do when we do it together.

God bless you all. And may God protect our troops.

It was the closing of one chapter so that another could begin. It was Kamala Harris’s moment.

[UPBEAT JAZZ MUSIC]

So right now, it’s 7:40. We are on the floor at the Democratic National Convention. It is a crazy party atmosphere, which is like a massive understatement.

Day two kicked off with delegates gathering on the convention floor, casting their votes in a kind of symbolic way to make Harris the party’s nominee.

This giant festival of lights, people in cowboy hats, people with blinking bracelets, people with Christmas lights wrapped around their hats, heads, shoulders, people wearing donkey hats. I mean, it’s very, very, very celebratory in here.

We need to see that we’re moving on. We are turning a chapter in America.

How do you feel right now?

Awesome, excitement, energized. Ready to win this election.

I love it. I love it. People are just excited, electrified, and they’re just loving it, and they’re happy.

This has been the most electrifying event I’ve ever attended in my life. It’s my first convention. But what a convention to come for, right? To make history right now, as we charge forward to November 5, to elect the first female Black president. I’m excited.

So with Harris now the nominee, a new campaign slogan appeared everywhere. And that was, “A new way forward.” But in a campaign that’s just four weeks old, it was really an open question what “a new way forward” actually meant.

And then over the course of the week, as speaker after speaker took the stage, we started to get an answer. The story of forward would be told through the story of Kamala Harris herself. And the question hanging over the week was really whether that story could appeal to a broad majority of Americans, voters outside of the convention hall who will ultimately decide the election.

Astead, welcome to the show.

Thank you for having me.

Again. The second time in a week. And I’m very excited for it.

So Astead, we had on the show on Monday to answer a question for us, that I think a lot of people have, which is, who is Kamala Harris? And you ended that conversation by saying that the Democratic Party also recognizes this reality, that for a lot of people, she is still this unknown quantity.

And that the party had a big task here at the convention this week, which was to find a way to finally tell her story. It does seem like they’ve tried to do that. Let’s walk through the case that they’re making for her. And what you’ve seen here in your reporting for your show, “The Run-Up.”

Yeah, I mean, I think that the Democrats have definitely laid out a case for her as a candidate, but also a story for her as a person. They have leaned into the different parts of her biography to really follow through on what, I think, is the best version of her campaign, which is a little bit for everybody. There is a story there about more moderate legislation, but pieces of progressive history. There’s different parts of her bio that speak to Black communities, immigrant communities.

Of course, the historic nature of her gender and the roles like that. And I really think it has followed through on what I expected for this week, which is that she seems to function politically as a mirror of some sort, where the party wants to position her as someone who basically, no matter what you’re looking for in terms of a vessel to beat Donald Trump, you can find it in this candidate.

Let’s dig into that more. Where did the convention start, that story?

Hello, Democrats!

Yeah, I think it really starts in her personal biography.

And I’m here tonight to tell you all about the Kamala Harris that I know.

They have told a story that she often tells about her being a first generation American.

Her mother moved here from India at 19.

And being a daughter of an immigrant mother who really raised two daughters in the Bay Area from working class roots. And that’s been a real thing that they’ve tried to own.

Kamala was not born into privilege. She had to work for what she’s got.

When she was young, she worked at McDonald’s.

They talk about her working at McDonald’s in college.

And she greeted every person without thousand watt smile and said, how can I help you?

I think it’s overall about trying to present this as someone who pulled himself up by bootstraps. It represents the American dream. And I think for Democrats, it really returns them back to the place they want to be. Democrats like thinking of themselves as a party who appeals to the diversity of America, both in racial ways, in gender ways, but also in class ways.

In Kamala Harris, we have a chance to elect a president who is for the middle class because she is from the middle class.

And I think they used other parts of her identity, specifically thinking about being the first Black woman to accept a major party’s nomination.

We know folks are going to do everything they can to distort her truth.

And I think Michelle Obama’s speech, specifically, spoke to the power and anxiety that sometimes that identity can bring.

My husband and I sadly know a little something about this.

For years, Donald Trump did everything in his power to try to make people fear us. See, his limited, narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hard-working, highly educated, successful people who happen to be Black.

And I would also say that it was an implicit response to what Republicans and others have been trying to say, talking about Kamala Harris as a DEI hire, someone who was only in their position because of their identity. But the way that Michelle Obama framed it was that those identities have power.

I want to know. I want to know. Who’s going to tell him, who’s going to tell him that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those Black jobs?

Just because someone the first to be in a position, does not mean that is the only reason in the position. But it also doesn’t make those identities meaningless. The fact that she is a Black woman should be seen as a strength, not as a weakness.

Is there a risk to that, though? I mean, by openly talking about race, is there a risk that goes too far and begins to alienate voters outside the convention out in the world who they need to win in November.

I mean, there’s always a risk. But I don’t really think so. Democrats have had increasing trouble with Black voters. There’s been a downturn in Black vote share all the way dating back to 2012.

In Biden’s now suspended candidacy, that was one of the things driving his polling weaknesses was kind of tepid reception from Black voters. A pitch to them is something that is a upside of the Kamala Harris campaign. And the hope that they could consolidate that community is where any Democratic nominee needs to be as a baseline.

We both got our start as young lawyers, helping children who were abused and neglected.

One thing I noticed that came up a lot during the speeches was her background as a prosecutor. How did the party present that part of her biography?

As a prosecutor, Kamala stood up for children who had been victims of sexual abuse.

She put rapists, child molesters, and murderers behind bars.

They talk about it in the way that I think fuels what they want to say is the reason she can take on Trump, that this is someone who has stood up to bullies before, who’s not going to be intimidated easily —

And Kamala is as tough as it comes.

— who’s tough, and who doesn’t shirk away from a challenge.

And she knows the best way to deal with a coward is to take him head on, because we all know cowards are weak. And Kamala Harris can smell weakness.

I think all of that adds up to say, you can trust this person to go up against Donald Trump. You can trust this person to go up against the Republican Party, because she’s not someone who is scared.

She never runs from a fight.

A woman, a fierce woman for the people.

But then, of course, we heard about another side of Kamala Harris, a more personal side.

Yeah, and I think this is the part of Kamala Harris where I think was kind of most missing in the presidential run. Frankly, it’s the part that she keeps most private. She is a warm family member and friend.

Hello to my big, beautiful blended family up there.

And I think what the speech from her husband did was really show and lay that out.

I got married, became a dad to Cole and Ella. Unfortunately, went through a divorce, but eventually started worrying about how I would make it all work. And that’s when something unexpected happened, I ended up with Kamala Harris’s phone number.

He talks about the kind of awkwardness of their first interaction.

I got Kamala’s voicemail, and I just started rambling. “Hey, it’s Doug.”

And I think you have a real kind of sense of their genuine connection to one another.

By the way, Kamala saved that voicemail. And she makes me listen to it on every anniversary.

Like, yes, this is someone who is tough, who is taking on corporations and cartels and all of that stuff by day. But this is someone who also makes a point to cook Sunday dinner for family every week.

And she makes a mean brisket for Passover.

And makes sure to really go close to his kids and is very close with her family.

That’s Kamala. She’s always been there for our children. And I know she’ll always be there for yours, too.

Going back to the last time the Democratic Party nominated a woman, Hillary Clinton, she had presented herself in a very different way. She kind of ran away from that stuff. She was saying, I don’t bake cookies, that’s not what I do. I’m kind of out there with the men, fighting.

And this convention and this candidate, Harris, is very different. She’s a newer generation. And she can do her career and bake cookies. Those things are not in conflict. This is a different type of woman leader.

This week we talked to Senator Elizabeth Warren on “The Run-Up,” and one of the things that she mentioned was she feels that there’s been a big change from 2016, even 2020 to now. Not just the amount of women in public office, but she said they don’t have to choose between sides of themselves. And I think that’s what diversity means.

Of course, Kamala Harris can be a tough politician and also bake cookies. Hillary Clinton did that, too. It was just that she was told that was not the way that she had to present herself. What Kamala Harris is benefiting from is there’s a greater space and ability to choose multiple things at once. And so particularly if others are going to talk more directly about gender or race or other things, that kind of frees her from having the burden of doing that herself.

And in fact, Hillary Clinton, herself, did speak, of course, on day one. She talked about that glass ceiling in the history that has led to now, including her own experience in 2016.

Yeah, I thought the Hillary Clinton speech was really powerful. I think a lot of the speakers put this moment in historical context, both politically and personally.

My mother, Dorothy, was born right here in Chicago before women had the right to vote. That changed 104 years ago yesterday. And since that day, every generation has carried the torch forward. In 1972, a fearless Black congresswoman named Shirley Chisholm —

— she ran for president. In 1984, I brought my daughter to see Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman nominated for vice president. And then there was 2016, when it was the honor of my life to accept our party’s nomination for president.

The last time I was here in my hometown was to memorialize my mother, the woman who showed me the power of my own voice. My mother volunteered at the local school.

I’m the proud granddaughter of a housekeeper, Sarah Daisy, who raised her three children in a one-bedroom apartment. It was her dream to work in government, to help people.

My grandmother, the woman who helped raise me as a child, a little old white lady born in a tiny town called Peru, Kansas.

I want to talk now about somebody who’s not with us tonight. Tessie Prevost Williams was born in New Orleans not long after the Supreme Court ruled that segregated public schools were unconstitutional. That was in 1954, same year I was born. Parents pulled their kids out of the school.

There was a way that I think the candidacy and the person was placed in a long legacy, both about gender identity and racial identity that kind of teed up this Thursday as a culminating moment, both politically and I think, in a broader historical context.

Together, we put a lot of cracks in the highest, hardest glass ceiling. And you know what? On the other side of that glass ceiling is Kamala Harris raising her hand and taking the oath of office as our 47th president of the United States!

I wish my mother and Kamala’s mother could see us. They would say, keep going. Shirley and Jerry would say, keep going!

I think you can do a lot to set up a candidate to be in a good position. All of this stuff adds up to some part of the puzzle, but the biggest piece is the candidate themself. At the end of the day, they have to close the deal. And I think this moment is her chance to tell her own story in a way that sometimes she has not decided to. And that’s still what this whole convention success and failure will ride on.

Are you a delegate?

Sorry, we caught you mid French fry eating. What’s your feeling about Kamala and what her story has been? Are you getting to know her this week? Are there things you’ve learned about her this week?

Yeah, I’m learning more and more as we go along. The more and more I learn about her, the more I’m impressed with her. I mean, she worked at McDonald’s when she was going to college to try to pay her way through.

Her very small beginnings. Not a trust fund baby type of thing. I relate to that. Like, I was on food stamps this year. So it’s like if she can do it with that background, it gives everybody hope.

Hillary was my girl. When Hillary ran, I championed her as well. But I didn’t feel this way as I feel about Harris. I’m like, do I want to run for office? If she can do it, I can. She looks just like me, right? She represents, she works at McDonald’s. She paid for every. It’s relatable. And that’s what everybody needs.

We’re going to break that glass ceiling. I’m getting teary, teary in my eyes. And it just means so much to be inclusive.

[WHIMSICAL MUSIC]

What does it mean to you that Kamala Harris is a woman? What does it mean to you that she’s a Black woman?

To have a Black woman become the president of the United States, and for her to turn the world upside down in 30 days, to know that I’m in the midst of this miraculous history is phenomenal.

One delegate who really stood out to us was Beverly Hatcher, a 76-year-old Black woman from Texas.

I was raised by a wonderful Baptist mama. I just lost her. But I am who I am because of my mother. We were always pushed to do whatever we wanted to do. I’ll never forget. I wanted to be a majorette. I taught myself, because we had no money for, what is it called, lessons

And a majorette is like the baton twirler, right?

Yes. And when I did finally try out in my 11th grade, I won right off. And my classmates, who were predominantly white, as years have gone by, have told me at class reunions and stuff, Beverly, the sleepy town of Wellington woke up.

Oh, my god, we got a Black girl getting ready to be the head majorette. But it happened because I had the drive and the will. My mother and my family stood behind me, and didn’t miss a parade, or a football game, or a basketball game.

And you see that in Harris?

Beverly, what would your mom say if she saw this?

My sisters have been telling me every day how proud my mom is. And I’m just happy. I’m happy to make her happy. Yeah.

We women, who have had mothers like Kamala, like Michelle, I remember Hillary’s mother, we women value their strength and their wisdom. And we’re just glad that they gave us a legacy to pass it on.

OK. Kamala Harris just wrapped up her acceptance speech. Before we talk about what she said and the case she presented, tell us how her campaign was thinking about the stakes of this moment.

Sabrina, this evening was one of two opportunities, along with the debate next month, for her to speak to tens of millions of people at once. And so for that, the stakes were really high.

Her goal was to present herself as a serious person and a serious candidate, who was not the candidate who flamed out in 2019 or the unsteady vice president from the beginning of her term. She had to show that she had the gravitas to be the commander in chief, the political aptitude to reach out to the middle, and also to progressives in her party all at the same time.

A very tall order. Tell us how she went about doing that.

Good evening, everyone. Good evening.

Well, she started talking around 9:30 Chicago time to a packed United Center with 14,000 or 15,000 people, many, many wearing all white, the color of the suffragettes, a color that makes a statement just by wearing it. And when Harris took the stage —

— they erupted in a cheer that forced her for a couple of minutes to wait before she could start talking.

Thank you. OK, let’s get to business. Let’s get to business. All right.

And what did she finally say once she started talking?

She told the story of her life.

The path that led me here in recent weeks was, no doubt, unexpected. But I’m no stranger to unlikely journeys.

My mother, our mother, Shyamala Harris, had one of her own. And I miss her every day, and especially right now.

She talked about the influence of her mother, who raised her and her sister.

And she also taught us, “And never do anything half-assed.” And that is a direct quote. [LAUGHS]

She spoke about her family’s humble beginnings in Oakland.

Before she could finally afford to buy a home, she rented a small apartment in the East Bay.

Then she started talking about her career as a prosecutor.

In the courtroom, I stood proudly before a judge and I said five words.

She brought back one of the lines that she used in her 2020 campaign about how when she stood up in a courtroom, she began with the same words.

Kamala Harris for the people.

And she said she would bring that same philosophy to the White House, that she was not working for specific individuals, but for the people at large.

And so on behalf of the people —

Eventually she did a bigger wind up to formally accepting the nomination.

— on behalf of every American, regardless of party, race, gender, or the language your grandmother speaks —

And listed the people on whose behalf she did so.

— on behalf of everyone whose story could only be written in the greatest nation on Earth —

It was really a kind of a feat of speech writing to build up to this big emotional moment.

— I accept your nomination to be president of the United States of America.

And what did you make of that, how she was doing that?

It was building up this speech to be a serious political document and present her as a serious figure in this moment. And so she still has to prove to people that she is capable of being the commander in chief and running the country.

And how does she try to prove that she’s capable of being a commander in chief?

What she did was try to draw the distinction between herself and Donald Trump.

In many ways, Donald Trump is an unserious man. But the consequences, but the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious.

And she warns that Trump would not have guardrails on him if he were elected to a second term.

Just imagine Donald Trump with no guardrails.

And how he would use the immense powers of the presidency of the United States not to improve your life, not to strengthen our national security, but to serve the only client he has ever had, himself.

The speech was very clear-eyed about the stakes of the election.

They know Trump won’t hold autocrats accountable because he wants to be an autocrat himself.

There was a whole section in the middle of the speech where she ticked through, one by one, a whole series of warnings about things that Trump would do to the country if he were back in the White House.

Get this, he plans to create a national anti-abortion coordinator and force states to report on women’s miscarriages and abortions.

Simply put, they are out of their minds.

What else stuck out to you?

It was remarkable, the section of the speech where she talked about Gaza.

President Biden and I are working around the clock, because now is the time to get a hostage deal and a ceasefire deal done.

She did not veer too far to the left.

I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself.

She managed to say things that would be appealing to both sides.

President Biden and I are working to end this war, such that Israel is secure, the hostages are released, the suffering in Gaza ends, and the Palestinian people can realize their right to dignity, security, freedom, and self-determination.

It was a remarkable moment to hear the arena erupt at the end of that section, to hear her support for both the Israelis and the Palestinians reveal that kind of enthusiasm, after the party has been really ripped apart for months about how to handle the situation.

Fellow Americans, I love our country with all my heart.

She ended this speech with a paean to patriotism.

We are the heirs to the greatest democracy in the history of the world.

She dove headlong into the American exceptionalism argument that is native to Republicans and to older generations of politicians, like Joe Biden.

It is now our turn to do what generations before us have done. Guided by optimism and faith to fight for this country we love. To fight —

But is not something you always hear from younger Democrats, who are a little less comfortable with some of the flag waving.

Let’s vote for it. And together, let us write the next great chapter in the most extraordinary story ever told. Thank you. God bless you and may God bless the United States of America. Thank you all.

She seemed to really be taking aim at this criticism of her, which is that she’s this radical California liberal and she can’t be trusted with the keys to the country.

I mean, that was one of the tasks that she had tonight, was to make the argument, particularly to voters in the middle, the suburban voters that used to vote for Republicans, but have been repelled by Trump and driven to Democrats in the last several years, that they can vote for her without worrying that she’s some kind of Bernie Sanders acolyte.

And some of that is based on the way she ran her last presidential campaign. Some of it, frankly, is because she’s a Black woman from California. And that the voters who will determine this election are voters in less diverse states, for the most part.

So Reid stepping back here, it feels worth remembering just where we were at the end of the Republican National Convention that was just over a month ago. Things couldn’t have felt more different. The GOP was on top of the world, while the Democrats were in disarray over Biden’s refusal to leave the race.

And now here we are. And it feels like things couldn’t be better for the Democrats. At least that’s the feeling I’m having coming out of this convention.

I mean, the whole race has turned upside down from where it was when we left Milwaukee. And Democrats are upbeat. They are confident. It is a party that is remarkably united behind their candidate.

But you have to remember, this election will be very close. It is, indeed, a game of inches in the key battleground states. And what she was trying to do was to present herself as someone who can be trusted as commander in chief to win over the tiny slices of the electorate that will determine the winner in places like Wisconsin, and Michigan, and Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Arizona.

And those are the states that will determine the election. And they have made a calculated decision that those voters needed to see her as a commander in chief, something they had not seen from her before. And we will see in the coming days and weeks whether she’s accomplished that in a way that brings enough of those people on board for her to win a term as president.

Here’s what else you should know today. On Thursday, the Supreme Court allowed Arizona Republicans, for now, to impose tougher voting requirements, including a new rule that people registering to vote there before the coming election must show proof of citizenship.

As a result, Arizonans newly registering to vote for this year’s presidential election must provide copies of one of several documents, such as a birth certificate or a passport, in order to prove that they are US citizens. Democrats have denounced the new rule as an attempt to prevent legal immigrants from voting.

And US Health officials have approved the latest slate of annual COVID vaccines, clearing the way for Americans six months and older to receive updated shots in the coming days. The approvals come amid a prolonged surge of COVID infections, which have risen all summer.
