Wales , constituent unit of the United Kingdom that forms a westward extension of the island of Great Britain. The capital and main commercial and financial centre is Cardiff .
Famed for its strikingly rugged landscape, the small nation of Wales—which comprises six distinctive regions—was one of Celtic Europe’s most prominent political and cultural centres, and it retains aspects of culture that are markedly different from those of its English neighbours.
Recent News
The medieval chronicler Giraldus Cambrensis (Gerald of Wales) had topography , history, and current events alike in mind when he observed that Wales is a “country very strongly defended by high mountains, deep valleys, extensive woods, rivers, and marshes; insomuch that from the time the Saxons took possession of the island the remnants of the Britons, retiring into these regions, could never be entirely subdued either by the English or by the Normans.” In time, however, Wales was in fact subdued and, by the Act of Union of 1536, formally joined to the kingdom of England. Welsh engineers, linguists, musicians, writers, and soldiers went on to make significant contributions to the development of the larger British Empire even as many of their compatriots laboured at home to preserve cultural traditions and even the Welsh language itself, which enjoyed a revival in the late 20th century. In 1997 the British government, with the support of the Welsh electorate, provided Wales with a measure of autonomy through the creation of the Welsh Assembly, which assumed decision-making authority for most local matters.
Although Wales was shaken by the decline of its industrial mainstay, coal mining , by the end of the 20th century the country had developed a diversified economy, particularly in the cities of Cardiff and Swansea , while the countryside, once reliant on small farming, drew many retirees from England. Tourism became an economic staple, with visitors—including many descendants of Welsh expatriates—drawn to Wales’s stately parks and castles as well as to cultural events highlighting the country’s celebrated musical and literary traditions. In the face of constant change, Wales continues to seek both greater independence and a distinct place in an integrated Europe.
Wales is bounded by the Dee estuary and Liverpool Bay to the north, the Irish Sea to the west, the Severn estuary and the Bristol Channel to the south, and England to the east. Anglesey (Môn), the largest island in England and Wales, lies off the northwestern coast and is linked to the mainland by road and rail bridges. The varied coastline of Wales measures about 600 miles (970 km). The country stretches some 130 miles (210 km) from north to south, and its east-west width varies, reaching 90 miles (145 km) across in the north, narrowing to about 40 miles (65 km) in the centre, and widening again to more than 100 miles (160 km) across the southern portion.
Glaciers during the Pleistocene Epoch (about 2,600,000 to 11,700 years ago) carved much of the Welsh landscape into deeply dissected mountains, plateaus , and hills, including the north-south–trending Cambrian Mountains, a region of plateaus and hills that are themselves fragmented by rivers. Protruding from that backbone are two main mountain areas—the Brecon Beacons in the south, rising to 2,906 feet (886 metres) at Pen y Fan, and Snowdonia in the northwest, reaching 3,560 feet (1,085 metres) at Snowdon , the highest mountain in Wales. Snowdonia’s magnificent scenery is accentuated by stark and rugged rock formations, many of volcanic origin, whereas the Beacons generally have softer outlines. The uplands are girdled on the seaward side by a series of steep-sided coastal plateaus ranging in elevation from about 100 to 700 feet (30 to 210 metres). Many of them have been pounded by the sea into spectacular steplike cliffs. Other plateaus give way to coastal flats that are estuarine in origin.
Wales consists of six traditional regions—the rugged central heartland, the North Wales lowlands and Isle of Anglesey county, the Cardigan coast (Ceredigion county), the southwestern lowlands, industrial South Wales, and the Welsh borderland. The heartland, which coincides partly with the counties Powys , Denbighshire , and Gwynedd , extends from the Brecon Beacons in the south to Snowdonia in the north and includes the two national parks based on those mountain areas. To the north and northwest lie the coastal lowlands, together with the Lleyn Peninsula (Penrhyn Llŷn) in Gwynedd and the island of Anglesey. To the west of the heartland, and coinciding with the county of Ceredigion , lies the coastline of Cardigan Bay, with numerous cliffs and coves and pebble- and sand-filled beaches. Southwest of the heartland are the counties of Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire . There the land rises eastward from St. David’s Head, through moorlands and uplands, to 1,760 feet (536 metres) in the Preseli Hills. South Wales stretches south of the heartland on an immense but largely exhausted coalfield . To the east of the heartland, the Welsh border region with England is largely agricultural and is characterized by rolling countryside and occasional wooded hills and mountainous moorland.
The main watershed of Wales runs approximately north-south along the central highlands. The larger river valleys all originate there and broaden westward near the sea or eastward as they merge into lowland plains along the English border. The Severn and Wye , two of Britain’s longest rivers, lie partly within central and eastern Wales and drain into the Bristol Channel via the Severn estuary. The main river in northern Wales is the Dee , which empties into Liverpool Bay. Among the lesser rivers and estuaries are the Clwyd and Conwy in the northeast, the Tywi in the south, and the Rheidol in the west, draining into Cardigan Bay (Bae Ceredigion). The country’s natural lakes are limited in area and almost entirely glacial in origin. Several reservoirs in the central uplands supply water to South Wales and to Merseyside and the Midlands in England.
The parent rock of Wales is dominated by strata ranging from Precambrian time (more than 540 million years ago) to representatives of the Jurassic Period (about 200 million to 145 million years ago). However, glaciers during the Pleistocene blanketed most of the landscape with till (boulder clay), scraped up and carried along by the underside of the great ice sheets, so that few soils can now be directly related to their parent rock. Acidic, leached podzol soils and brown earths predominate throughout Wales.

WATCH: Harris and Walz speak at campaign event in Las Vegas, Nevada
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris promised Saturday to work to eliminate taxes on tips paid to restaurant and other service industry employees, echoing a pledge that her opponent, Republican Donald Trump, has made, and marking a rare instance of political overlap from both sides.
Watch the event in our player above.
Harris made the announcement at a rally on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where the economy relies heavily on the hotel, restaurant and entertainment industries. Trump vowed essentially the same thing at his own rally in the city in June — though neither he nor Harris are likely to be able to fully do that without actions from Congress.
“It is my promise to everyone here that, when I am president, we will continue our fight for working families of America,” Harris said. “Including to raise the minimum wage and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers.”
Trump responded on his social media site a short time later, posting that Harris “just copied my NO TAXES ON TIPS Policy.”
“The difference is, she won’t do it, she just wants it for Political Purposes!,” the former president wrote. “This was a TRUMP idea – She has no ideas, she can only steal from me.”
Harris’ campaign said afterward that as president she would work with Congress to draft a proposal that includes an income limit and other provisions to keep hedge fund managers and lawyers from structuring their compensation to try to take advantage of the policy. She also would push for the proposal alongside one to increase the federal minimum wage.
Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, came to Nevada as the final stop of a five battleground-state blitz in which their party has shown new energy after President Joe Biden exited the race and endorsed Harris. On Sunday, the vice president is holding a San Francisco fundraiser that has already raised more than $12 million, her campaign said, with House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi among those set to speak.
WATCH: Harris campaign continues battleground state blitz as Trump agrees to debate
There were 12,000-plus people inside the campus basketball arena on Saturday and, before the event started, local law enforcement halted entry to the event because people were becoming ill while waiting outside in 109-degree heat to go through security. About 4,000 people were in line when the entrances were closed.
Walz referenced that during his speech, but turned it into an applause line by telling Nevada, “don’t worry, we’re going to be back a lot.”
As part of the trip, Harris is hoping to build greater support among Latino voters. In 2020, Biden narrowly defeated Trump by 2.4 percentage points in Nevada.
The 60,000-strong Culinary Workers Union announced its endorsement of Harris. About 54 percent of the union’s members are Latino, 55 percent women and 60 percent immigrants. The union also issued a statement supporting Harris’ call for a higher minimum wage and to “ensure that there are no taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers.”
Harris made her promise on eliminating tip taxation as part of a broader appeal to strengthen the nation’s middle class, seizing on a theme that was a centerpiece of Biden’s now-defunct reelection bid.
“We believe in a future where we lower the cost of living for America’s families so they have a chance, not just to get by, but to get ahead,” she said.
AP VoteCast found in 2020 that 14 percent of Nevada voters were Hispanic, with Biden winning 54 percent of their votes. His margin with Hispanic voters was slightly better nationwide, a sign that Democrats cannot take this bloc of voters for granted.
“There’s an incredible energy here among the college students and community members who are coming together to support and listen to our next president, Kamala Harris,” said Imer Cespedes-Alvarado, 21. Studying political science at UNLV, Cespedes-Alvarado is a first generation American citizen who spent his childhood in Costa Rica before making the difficult decision at 16 to return alone to the U.S. for better opportunities.
The vice president also promised to tackle immigration, leaning heavily into the issue as she did the previous night during a rally in Arizona.
“We know that our immigration system is broken, and we know what it takes to fix it,” Harris said in Las Vegas. She also endorsed an “earned pathway to citizenship” for some people in the country illegally and slammed Trump, who she said “talks a big game about border security but he does not walk the walk.”
The vice president has in recent weeks tried to seize the political offensive on an issue that Trump and top Republicans have frequently used to slam her and the Biden administration. In doing so, Harris is hoping to drive a wedge with Republicans.
Because the vice president’s portfolio in the Biden administration included the root causes of migration, and due to some of her comments before the 2020 election, many leading GOP voices have sought to portray her as weak on the southern border and enabling illegal immigration.
Trump himself has said of Harris, “As a border czar, she’s been the worst border czar in history, in the world history.”
WATCH: Republican mayor from border state explains why he just endorsed Harris for president
The former president proposed mass deportations if he returns to the White House, but AP VoteCast found in 2020 that nearly 7 in 10 Nevada voters said that immigrants living in the United States illegally should be offered the chance to apply for legal status.
Still, policy aside, many of the rallygoers in Las Vegas said they were thrilled to see the new energy Harris and Walz have brought to the race.
Krista Hall, 60, and her husband Thaddeus Hager, 58, said they haven’t been more excited about an election since Barack Obama’s campaign in 2008.
“This is as electric, if not more than,” Hall said, noting that they attended several Obama rallies at the time. Hager said he’s confident that Harris and Walz will “win in a landslide.”
The Democratic ticket over the past week also visited the crucial midwestern “blue wall” states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan. Along with Nevada and Arizona those states represent 61 electoral votes that could be essential for reaching the 270 threshold required to win on Election Day.
Brian Shaw, a Republican from northern Nevada, said Harris’ arrival on the top of the ticket could make it harder for Trump to win because Biden was a “pitiful candidate” and there’s little time to expose the vice president’s “incompetence.” He said he attended Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance’s rally in Reno on July 30 and found him to be “likable, capable, polished as a politician, but not veneered.”
Weissert and Boak reported from Washington. Associated Press writer Scott Sonner in Reno, Nevada, contributed to this report.

Princess Kate's rare appearances this year so far amid difficult year
The princess of wales has stepped back from royal duties as she undergoes cancer treatment.
It has been a difficult year for the Prince and Princess of Wales amid Kate's abdominal surgery and cancer diagnosis .
Kate has stepped back from her royal duties as she continues preventative chemotherapy, sharing in her last update that she is "making good progress" but "there are good days and bad days".
She also said that she hoped to "join a few public engagements over the summer," and while there has been speculation about an appearance at the Paris 2024 Olympics , Kate has made two major public appearances this year.
The Princess has also personally made announcements about her cancer diagnosis and her progress.
Take a look back at the timeline of when we have heard and seen Kate this year…
Sighting with Carole Middleton in Windsor
After undergoing major abdominal surgery in January, Kate was supported by her family as she recovered at home in Windsor. TMZ published an image of the Princess being driven through Windsor by her mother, Carole Middleton, in what was the first sighting of Kate since her surgery and her last public appearance on Christmas Day 2023.
Image shows Kate and Carole at Royal Ascot 2017.
Mother's Day
Kensington Palace released an image of the Princess with her three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis taken by Prince William at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor. The caption read: " Thank you for your kind wishes and continued support over the last two months. Wishing everyone a Happy Mother’s Day. C."
The photograph was later pulled by agencies as it was found to have been digitally altered.
Kate then released a short statement on social media, saying: "Thank you for your kind wishes and continued support over the last two months. Wishing everyone a Happy Mother’s Day. C."
Sighting at Windsor Farm Shop with Prince William
A video was published by The Sun and TMZ of William and Kate leaving the Windsor Farm Shop with shopping bags on 19 March.
Image shows William and Kate at a farm in Wales in 2022.
Kate shares cancer diagnosis in video message
Kate announced her shocking cancer diagnosis in a moving video message released on 22 March. The Princess was filmed in the grounds of Windsor Park as she made her announcement, in which she spoke about delivering the news of her diagnosis.
"This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family," Kate said. "As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment.
"But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok."
Kate has since been undergoing a course of preventative chemotherapy.

Health update
A new image of the Princess taken under a tree in Windsor by photographer Matt Porteous was released on 14 June, as she shared an update on her progress and confirmed her attendance at Trooping the Colour the following day.
Kate shared that she is "making good progress" but "there are good days and bad days".
She said that she hopes to "join a few public engagements over the summer", while "equally knowing I am not out of the woods yet".
She added: "My treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months.
"On the days I feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home."
Trooping the Colour – Carriage procession
Kate made her first public appearance of 2024 at the King's official birthday parade – known as Trooping the Colour – on 15 June. The Princess smiled and waved at the crowds as she joined George, Charlotte and Louis in the carriage procession, before watching the military ceremony on Horse Guards Parade.
Trooping the Colour – Balcony moment
The Princess then appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony with her family, the King and Queen and senior working royals to watch the flypast. Kate, who looked elegant in a white and navy Jenny Packham dress, exchanged loving glances with her husband William, as they chatted with their children.
Wimbledon arrival
After weeks of speculation, Kate attended the Men's Singles Final between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon on 14 July. The Princess stood out among the crowds in a purple Safiyaa London dress, as she arrived at the tournament with daughter Charlotte and sister, Pippa Matthews.
Wimbledon – Centre Court
The Princess looked incredibly moved as she received a standing ovation from the crowd on Centre Court as she took her seat in the royal box.
Wimbledon – Trophy presentation
Tennis fan Kate, who is patron of the AELTC, stepped out on the court to present the winning trophy to Carlos Alcaraz at the end of a nail-biting match.

COMMENTS
