Why does your ATS resume deliver more interviews than those with fancy styling?

80% of resumes never get viewed by a human. An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is the software that is the judge, jury, and executioner of the online job application you submitted. The ATS algorithm scans, parses (organizes), ranks based on skills keyword matching and rejects 80% of resumes. The algorithm job recruiters use to search for talent on LinkedIn uses similar methods.

ATS software cannot parse (organize) resumes that contain two columns, tables, logos, images, symbols, odd fonts, headers, footers, and other fancy styling. Do you write Academic CVs or federal government resumes?

In May 2010, the government started converting federal hiring to be more like the private sector. Part of the change was to agree to take business-private sector style resumes if they included the requirements of the federal job posting. It also eliminated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities KSAs from the initial application. For the previously described federal USAJOBS situations, our business-style resume writing, with a maximum of two pages, focusing on accomplishments, skills, and bullets for easy scanning by humans and ATS technology is a great fit.

However, a few offices still require the old federal government-style resume, which is usually 4 to 8 pages long, written in paragraph (not bullet) format, and listing comprehensive details of every employment position, focusing on responsibilities and duties and less on outcomes and achievements. We do NOT write those types of federal resumes. We do not write Academic CVs.

Once considered an online resume in and of itself, your LinkedIn profile was designed to provide a comprehensive look at your work history, skill set, education, and even a dash of your personal brand. Now, however, with various advancements to the site, there’s even more you can do to get noticed by recruiters and boost your job seeking possibilities.

Take the LinkedIn resume feature as an example. While it’s no replacement for the standard, tailored resume you send out to employers, it’s a surprisingly valuable way to learn more about your own skills and expertise . Which, if you’re stuck in a rut or not sure where to start, can be incredibly helpful. As Muse writer Rich Moy says, he learned his journey from recruiter to full-time writer wasn't quite as haphazard as it felt. That knowledge made it easier for him to sell his story to hiring managers.

Another overlooked feature? LinkedIn Premium.

Of course, before we go any further and you consider spending any money, you’ll want to make sure that you have a basic understanding of how to use LinkedIn . I know, I know, you already think you do. But because the site can be so powerful, it’s worth running through the basics before we get anymore advanced. For example, do you have key words in your profile ? A clear photo ? A good headline ? Are you engaging with other users? I hope yes, yes, yes, and more yes.

What Is LinkedIn Premium, Exactly?

Good question! The premium membership goes beyond the basic free version; it’s called premium for a reason, after all. There are four levels of the service: There’s the base version called Job Seeker ($30/month); the Business Plan (~$48/month); Sales Navigator (~$65/month); and Recruiter Lite (~$100/month).

Unless you’re in an active recruiting role, you can probably ignore Recruiter Lite. Same goes for the Sales Navigator option. Since the Job Seeker option is the most relevant one to professionals seeking, well, jobs, it gets high marks from users who credit it with assisting them in landing interviews (and then, hopefully, offers). With this access, users get to send InMail messages to three people a month, regardless of whether or not they’re connected. You also get to see who’s viewed your profile and look at analytics on what other candidates they’re also viewing, intel that, if you’re trying to land a job in a competitive market, can be helpful to see.

For example, if you see that a hiring manager at a company you’re interested in looked at you, you can then reach out. While it definitely takes some courage on your part, sending an InMail message along the following lines really can’t hurt:

Hi [Name of Hiring Manager],

I was hoping to touch base with you about the [name of position]. After learning [recent news or fun fact about the company], I’m more excited than ever about the opportunity. I see that you’re overseeing the department, and if, in fact, you’re the person hiring for this role, I’d love to ask you a few questions about the position and see if it would be a good fit for my skill set. Please let me know if that would be possible or if there's someone else I might connect with regarding this position.

Or, let’s say you actually already applied for a position within the organization; you can assume that the person received your materials and is now checking out your social media presence post-application to get a sense of who you are and what you’ve accomplished. While you can’t do much with that information, it is slightly reassuring to know that you’re moving along in the process.

This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Lucia Polverino, a 24-year-old analyst at a venture capital firm based in London. Business Insider has verified her employment. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

I was always passionate about getting into the workplace as quickly as possible after university. After graduating, I dabbled in a career in public relations and product management before landing my role as a venture capital analyst — but my varied experiences helped me get to this point.

My first office job was a placement in my first year at university, where I studied for a degree in business administration. I worked at Piper Sandler, an American investment bank. I spent six months in their healthcare M&A division. It was a really good first formative experience, but it was challenging.

My next placement was in my third year of university. I worked at KKR in their private credit team. But because this happened during the COVID-19 pandemic, I had to be proactive as we weren't in the office , and try to get my colleagues to give me more work to do. It was a really valuable experience.

After graduating, I was adamant I wanted to try something less corporate. My first job out of university was at a tech PR firm. I've always been interested in entrepreneurship, media, and communications. It was a 15-person team when I joined, which made for a startup-like environment — very entrepreneurial and dynamic. I worked with eight clients across AI, cyber security, e-commerce, and business-to-business sectors. That was an inflection point because it diverted my career toward the tech world.

I loved working with tech companies and startups, so after nine months, I decided to go in-house and work at a tech company. As a recent graduate, I was still eligible for roles targeted toward recent university graduates which provide a structured career path into a particular sector. I loved the sound of product management. You can work with a bunch of different teams, such as engineering, marketing, and UX; this was similar to the way I worked in PR with different clients. I was lucky enough to secure a grad job in the product team at ICIS, which is a data team within LexisNexis, a software company.

I was so surprised at how relevant my PR experience was because so much of VC is investor relations. It's really important to form friendships with investors, not just transactional relationships. Equally, because I was working with tech companies in my PR role, it was easy to verbalize and justify why I loved tech companies and working with startups in my interview. It's really important for young people in interviews to bring in their past experiences and talk about how it will help them be good candidates.

For young people who want to apply to VC , it's really important to figure out the kind of fund you want to apply for. If your background is generalist and diverse, that kind of VC fund would likely suit you. But if you started your career with a technical background, you'd perhaps be suited to a deep tech fund. You should understand where you will add the most value.

Being a pandemic graduate also made me less worried about finding a linear career path and sticking to it for five years. During the pandemic, I thought, who knows what will happen in six months? Nothing was certain — it seemed like the pandemic would never end. This impacted my mindset, and I was more willing to take risks and figure out what I actually liked. I think it's also more of a Gen Z trend because we are more likely to job-hop than previous generations.

You don't need a background in investment banking to get into VC anymore

It may have been true in the past that you need an investment banking background to get into VC, but that's not the case anymore. I've met more people that don't come from banking than do. In my case, at a pre-seed fund, making a financial model from scratch would be less useful a skill to have.

VC is such a broad industry — and your experience will be shaped by what stage your fund invests in. The hiring managers usually like young people who have had startup experience, such as being an operator. I've also met so many people who come from software engineering and technical backgrounds and work at deep tech funds. I've also met a lot of people coming from NGO and charity backgrounds. This ultimately speaks to the sector you may want to specialize in once you get into VC.

You could also show you have an entrepreneurial mindset to some degree. My hiring managers loved that I had a fashion blog when I was at university and that I would reach out to brands to partner with for my videos. It's really important to show that you love entrepreneurship and working with founders.

Try to leverage recruiters if you can. At Playfair, we have a very transparent hiring process, and the fund markets the position as much as possible — but that's not the same for all VC funds. I found my job through a recruiter called JumpStart, and it's a very helpful avenue for younger grads.

TOKYO (AP) — A powerful typhoon that slammed the Tokyo area with heavy rains and brought mudslide warnings in northern Japan is heading eastward in the Pacific Ocean away from the coast. There were no reports Saturday of major damage. Tokyo and nearby areas were back to normal under sunny skies. Bullet trains that cancelled services between Tokyo and Nagoya, stranding thousands of passengers, resumed operations with the first morning train. Some local trains were still delayed, however. Dozens of flights remained cancelled. Typhoon Ampil was moving away from Japan’s eastern coast at 12 mph, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
