Zong Fuli, daughter of the late Chinese billionaire Zong Qinghou —once the country’s richest man—has officially taken over Hangzhou-based beverage giant Wahaha Group, according to a local business registration system.

The younger Zong, also known by her English name Kelly, is now Wahaha Group’s chairman and CEO, according to the Qichacha business registration system. She also became owner of a large stake in the privately held company, which once formed the basis of father’s $5.9 billion wealth, according to Forbes estimates. Wahaha was started by Zong Qinghou almost four decades ago.

A graduate of Pepperdine University in the U.S., Zong joined Wahaha Group in 2004 and led the company’s marketing and public relations arm before becoming vice chairman in 2021. Although groomed to succeed her father, Kelly Zong’s path to the top hasn’t been entirely smooth.

Months after father’s death in February, a resignation letter reportedly from her began to widely circulate on Chinese social media. At some point, the younger Zong had decided to step down as vice chairman and CEO after certain shareholders questioned her right to manage the sprawling beverage giant, according to the letter. In late July, the company put a statement on its website stressing that Kelly Zong would continue to fulfill her management responsibilities following “friendly negotiation with various shareholders.”

Now it is her task to revive Wahaha Group’s sales, which peaked at 78 billion yuan ($11 billion) in 2013. Her father clinched the crown of China’s richest man in 2010 with a net worth of $8 billion. In 2012, he returned to the top spot with a fortune of $10 billion, according to Forbes estimates.

But as competition rose and consumer preferences shifted from its bottled water and milk-based drinks, revenues declined to 51.2 billion yuan in 2022, according to the government-affiliated All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, the latest data available.

Analysts say Wahaha Group is overhauling its distribution network, which is focused on lower-tier towns and cities. This doesn’t help the company’s strategy of attracting younger and health-conscious consumers with newer offerings such as energy drinks and tea-based beverages.

Harry Han, research analyst at London-based market research provider Euromonitor International, says the company is making progress, and sales saw “healthy growth” in 2023.

“Wahaha is on the way to approaching new markets, consumers, and building trust,” he writes in an e-mailed note. “Stable expansion and evolution of offline shelf space, together with aligned new products and marketing strategies, is expected to help Wahaha to stand firmer in the future.”
